UPDATE: I hear speculation that NBC’s FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER is unlikely to go forward, which would open up a slot for another comedy pilot. The chances of the network’s freshman Whitney to return also appear slim.
PREVIOUS: Brace yourself: a wave of new series pickups and existing show renewals are coming our way this week. NBC, which is first off presenting its fall lineup next Monday morning, is expected to lead the way, followed closely by Fox, which is holding its upfront Monday afternoon.
NBC is expected to order about 6-8 new comedy series and 4-5 dramas. The network, which has been very secretive about its testings and screenings this year, gave an indication of some of its favorites when it allowed several pilots to start making staffing offers last week. The list includes five comedy pilots: the single-camera 1600 PENN, THE NEW NORMAL, SAVE ME and FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER (the latter is backed by by Greg Daniels’ veteran NBC series The Office, meaning that the writer-producers signed for FND would segue to The Office if the pilot doesn’t go) and the multi-camera GUYS WITH KIDS. With the Matthew Perry starrer GO ON already picked up, NBC has pretty much filled up its comedy quota. But in case one of two of those five don’t go or NBC opts to pick up more than 6 new comedy series, multi-camera comedy pilot DADDY’S GIRLS has been gaining momentum and has a real shot, with the single-camera ANIMAL KINGDOM also percolating. On the drama side, CHICAGO FIRE, medical dramas COUNTY and DO NO HARM, action drama REVOLUTION (which has been given permission to start making staffing offers), and mystery soap NOTORIOUS are picking up steam. A pickup of the Dick Wolf-produced Chicago Fire is expected to seal the renewal of Wolf’s veteran procedural Law & Order: SVU. Early forntrunner MIDNIGHT SUN, a thriller based on an Israeli format, prison drama BAD GIRLS and Western FRONTIER have gone quiet, but it is still possible for NBC to take a swing with an unusual concept.

Fox is considering picking up about 3-4 new comedies and 2-3 dramas. The UNTITLED MINDY KALING comedy pilot is all but assured a spot, with NED FOX IS MY MANNY peaking at the right moment and the Steve Levitan-produced REBOUNDING relying on great testing and big auspices. That squeezes the rest of the comedy pilots out, though LITTLE BROTHER, GOODWIN GAMES, EL JEFE and PRODIGY/BULLY are still holding out hope as each has something going for it, mostly on the casting side. Drama-wise, the Kevin Bacon-starring UNTITLED KEVIN WILLIAMSON is a go, with the UNTITLED BERMAN/WRIGHT mob doctor drama also looking more and more like a lock, especially in light of House‘s departure. That leaves the Cuba Gooding Jr-starring legal drama GUILTY and the UNTITLED KARYN USHER teen spy drama fighting it out for the third spot if there is one, with Guilty having the upper hand. Fox will likely renew Touch, but there is speculation that the network could also bring back The Finder, which would eliminate one of the slots earmarked for new dramas.
ABC is looking to pick up six dramas, including MISTRESSES, which has a straight-to-series order. That number will be impacted by how many of the bubble dramas – Scandal, Body Of Proof and GCB – the network renews. NASHVILLE is the one pilot so far guaranteed a spot on the schedule for next season. AMERICANA also looks strong. Marc Cherry’s DEVIOUS MAIDS has been given permission to make staffing offers but didn’t hit it out of the park in its screening. Of the magic pilots ordered as potential companions to ONCE UPON A TIME, GOTHAM had a solid screening while 666 PARK AVE and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are yet to be seen, with the latter undergoing massive re-editing. PENOZA is a possibility, UNTITLED ROLAND EMMERICH and GILDED LILYS also are a maybe. ABC’s comedy field has no standouts like Suburgatory and Don’t Trust The B last year. MALIBU COUNTRY is solid, with UNTITLED MANDY MOORE and UNTITLED DAN FOGELMAN gaining momentum, AMERICAN JUDY, HOW TO LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS, ONLY FOOLS & HORSES, RED VAN MAN and PRAIRIE DOGS all still in contention and UNTITLED KARI LIZER soon to be seen. (UPDATE: The Kari Lizer pilot received a lukewarm reception at its screening, while THE SMART ONE fared a little better.)
CBS is eying three new drama series for fall and one more for midseason. ELEMENTARY and RALPH LAMB still look like the ones to beat. Of the female-lead dramas, APPLEBAUM appears to have the upper hand at the moment, but TROOPER comes from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the last time a pilot produced by him didn’t go to series was seven years ago. Plus, if CBS decides to kill one of the CSI spinoffs, it may fill the void in the Bruckheimer quota on the network with the Mira Sorvino-starring procedural. GOLDEN BOY was well received though there is concern about the lead Theo James being completely unknown. Things are reversed for WIDOW DETECTIVE, whose chances are elevated by the star power of its lead, John Corbett. On the comedy side, CBS could pick up about 3-4 new comedies depending whether it would pull the trigger on expanding to two two-hour comedy blocks. Things look murky, but PARTNERS and the single-camera NICK STOLLER continue to be strong, with UNTITLED MARTIN LAWRENCE, which was ordered late, gaining momentum, along with MALINS/BERLANTI and Rebel Wilson’s SUPER FUN NIGHT, though there have been some issues on the last one, which needs showrunners if picked up to pilot as Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen only agreed to work on the pilot.
The CW is looking at picking up as many as 5-6 new drama series, probably to spread them out throughout the season. The list of frontrunners continues to be topped by ARROW and THE CARRIE DIARIES, with BEAUTY & THE BEAST, FIRST CUT and CULT strong and the Hunger Games-esque THE SELECTION also in contention.

What about Last Resort?
Maybe there’s no news since the last report that it was solid. However I have seen some quibbling about it – that it skews too male for ABC’s strategy. I wouldn’t fall off my chair to see that ABC has passed on it, and is going for a pure female-centric strategy of mystery soaps, history soaps, supernatural soaps and soapy soaps.
Why not go for the laser-beam focus? It works for CBS.
What about The CW’s SHELTER, Nellie?
Haven’t heard anything about it anywhere. Good, or bad.
Good. Shelter has been reported to not move forward in the nbc article.
Why are not all pilots always included? Makes me wonder if those flying under the radar have no chance, or an even better chance than those we hear about.
So “The Manzanis” is done? Sad about that because I was waiting for Kirstie Alley comeback to TV.
I heard it had a really strong screening actually
any news on manzanis?? come on abc…
Seriously, what’s the deal on “Smart One”?
Do not understand NBC. They are so low that they can’t even get people to check out their shows, so what do they do? Dump all the interesting ideas and program shows that are exactly the same as every other network. Exactly what reason does that give anybody to check them out?
The CW is also low, but at least it seems they are willing to try something different, in this case scheduling “cable seasons”.
If NBC wants to take a swing with a concept that will get people’s attention when they see ads during the Olympics, they should opt for The Frontier, which is reportedly gorgeous. Westerns are unusual on TV and that should garner attention. Then throw in a tease that there might be some possibly supernatural twist, and that could be a show that people remember to check out. Above all, NBC just needs attention. They can’t advertise new shows if nobody is watching NBC to begin with.
Revolution (are they really going to keep that name?) could also be seen as a “different concept,” since post-apocalyptic dramas aren’t all over the place on broadcast, but I’ve gotten leery of JJ Abrams and his superduper secret surprises that turn out to be lame in the end – Lost and Alcatraz being two prime examples. Envisioning the ad for that one, I’m seeing The Walking Dead, without the zombies, in other words, without the part that makes the show exciting and un-missible.
Gotta say, I agree NBC need something like Frontier in their lineup. They need to take a risk!
What about “The Last Resort”!? I want to see more Daisy Betts!
Still nothing on The Smart One? I was expecting a pick-up for that one based on the stars and producers alone.
Still nothing on SMART ONE?! Even if it’s just dead…these write-ups make it sound like the project doesn’t exist.
A previous pilot panic said 666 park ave was screened to so so results, and this one says it is yet to be seen.. was it seen or was it not seen? What are its current odds?
Where did Last Resort go?
Cult was reported to be staffing already by other sites and the CW’s BEAUTY & THE BEAST was reported as might being picked up for midseason. Did you hear anything about which CW shows are going to be picked for the fall and which could be only for midseason?
What about LAST RESORT for ABC?
I’d much rather see Cuba Gooding Jr grace the TV screen than a teen spy drama. The announcements and pickups should be interesting!
Do the 4-5 NBC dramas include Hannibal?
Do you think they’ll do rolling premieres for the comedies starting in August or add another hour to the regular schedule? I just don’t see where a lot of these shows will fit.
I think it depends largely on what they do with their returning comedies. At this point, would it surprise anyone to see the fall schedule dominated by new comedies, with the rest either cancelled or more likely shipped to midseason? There are all sorts of reasons why that wouldn’t happen, but at this point, nothing would shock me. I’ve been suggesting a quasi-house cleaning for weeks now. I love “Parks & Recreation,” but it stands a much better chance of growing an audience if just one new comedy works so that it can be part of a growing night.
No update on LAST RESORT?
The more and more we talk about these series, the less and less I’m interested in many of them. NBC’s Revolution has three-episodes-and-out stamped all over it.
The CW has by far the most interesting of the bunch but calling Arrow the cream of the crop is a joke.
Applebaum isn’t going to find a pulse at CBS and Trooper’s a pooper.
And ABC trying to shove another crappy magical series down our throats…
Fox should lose Touch, pick up Kevin Williamson, and use the rest of the available time slots to just run sports. None of the others series are gonna last 9 episodes.
Regarding “Applebaum”:
I adore Rachelle Lefevre, and thought she was amazing in “The Caller”, which she was carrying mostly by herself.
But I’m questioning her appeal as the lead of a series. She’s gorgeous, but somehow, I don’t see her leading a TV show by herself. Don’t know why…
Why isnt Arrow cream of the crop? You mean its not better than carrie diaries or greys anatomy copycat or beauty and the best?
NBC:
Sad about “The Frontier” from “Invasion” creator’s Shaun Cassidy but i’m looking for the Eric Kripke’s “Revolution” show.
Fox:
Viva Kevin Williamson’s serial killer drama (again!)
.. I’m looking for the Karyn Usher’s teen spy drama too
CBS:
Ralph Lamb for sure !!
and we need MARTIN LAWRENCE comedy too !
CW:
just “Cult”.. the others can go on the hell especially “The Carrie Diaries” one.
According to the composer who did the score for Revolution, Favreau has said the pilot/show will be an “aisle walker” (meaning award winner)!! Very excited!!!
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah !
Who’s the composer ??
Wow, that composer REALLY knows his stuff…
C’mon, Martin!
I noticed you didn’t mention Last Resort on ABC. What’s going on with that?
pick up the karyn usher pilot!!guilty sounds boring…
Considering NBC’s track record for failing shows, 5 to 6 comedies and 4 to 5 dramas seems like suicide. They should add at least 2 more comedies and 2 more dramas to their order for the inevitable cancellations that are sure to come when their shows start tanking.
No offense to the writers of these posts, but has anyone tracked what is described leading up to the schedule and then compared it to the actual schedule? It seems like there’s been a constant up-and-down for pretty much every show over the last few weeks, which to me says nobody really knows much of anything. The fact that we haven’t heard much of anything for “Bad Girls” might be indicative, but it could also just mean nobody is talking.
Whatever the case, I guess we’ll know in a week.
You’re right Brian J. I actually had a knee-jerk reaction when I said NBC should add 2 extra comedies and 2 extra dramas to their pick-ups. Fact is, until Monday, I have no idea just how many they plan to greenlight to series, or how many are actually any good.
And even when the dust settles and we all get some UP FRONT answers, there’s still MOCKINGBIRD LANE in contention as an off-cycle possibility.
Still not even a MENTION of The Smart One?? Something seems fishy here…
I really hope Penoza makes it, especially since it seems Scruples is dead. Not read any scripts but going off what I’ve read elsewhere I think NBC probably have the strongest slate. They should pick up Frontier for the supposed wow factor of the visuals.
ABC, the network that brings you soap. AND LOTS OF IT!
Except if it’s on daytime…
question: Is GOTHAM out of consideration @ ABC? I heard over the weekedn that the UNTITLED ROLAND EMMERICH was going to get the go ahead for staffing Monday or Tuesday. Any truth to that?
Nellie, do you know anything about the chances of Body of Proof (ABC) returning??
It won’t return.
It might happen its looking like abc is going to renew 2 bubble shows. Its eithr going to be Body of Proof, Scandal, and GCB. Currently its looking like its going to be Scandal and Body of Proof.
