UPDATE FRIDAY AM: I’ve started hearing that drama pilot ZERO HOUR is heating up again and looks promising for a series order.
PREVIOUS THURSDAY 8PM: With NBC and Fox pretty much done with their new series pickups, ABC, which presents its fall schedule right after them on Tuesday, is at bat next. Here is my last take on the ABC pilot field heading into tomorrow, when the network is expected to make its picks. On the drama side, NASHVILLE is on the schedule. Fellow soaps AMERICANA and RED WIDOW (formerly Penoza) also look strong, along with the male-skewing LAST RESORT, which I hear may be launched as a limited/midseason series. In the magical series face-off between 666 PARK AVE and GOTHAM, (Beauty & The Beast has dropped out of contention), 666 seems to have the upper hand but that could change. I hear Marc Cherry’s DEVIOUS MAIDS is fading fast though one should never count Cherry out. MISTRESSES has a series order. On the half-hour side, the Reba McEntire starrer MALIBU COUNTRY, the MANDY MOORE comedy and the DAN FOGELMAN alien sitcom, now called Neighbors, look good. COMEBACK JACK (form. Red Van Man) and Claudia Lonow’s HOW TO LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS are also in contention, while there is speculation that early favorite AMERICAN JUDY may be redeveloped in lieu of a straight pickup as ABC loves star Judy Greer.

What about Rebounding? Any chance they pick that up?
So, Smart One is out?
The Smart One? How have you never mentioned The Smart One once in your reporting??? it’s being produced by Ellen Degeneres and not only does it star Portia deRossi but it has Malin Akerman in it. AND David Arquette AND Jean Smart. I find it hard to believe this pilot isn’t on ABC’s radar.
STILL no news about Scruples? Come on! It’s the only one I’m bothered about. Maybe no news is good news, but can’t you give any kind of indication about it’s chances at all?
The fact that it’s not on here means it’s pretty much dead. I was hoping it might find a place midseason or even in the summer, imo the show was a self-starter due to the source material.
Agreed – I think Scruples is gone. Too bad, it had an interesting cast [Claire Forlani, Karine Vanasse [Pan Am], but the show was similar to Americana – key difference being Americana is produced out of ABC studios, while Scruples was produced out of a smaller non-ABC shop. When in doubt, the networks often try to green-light “in-house” productions. It’s a shame, but that’s how things go most often.
I’m really sorry if Scruples is gone. Great source material.
The Last Resort and Gotham!
I don’t give a sh*t about the others
Malibu Country is as dumb as they come. It makes Beverly Hillbillies look like Frasier.
It doesn’t have to be smart, people just have to watch, Malibu Country will be a great pair with Last Man Standing, two family sitcoms, just what ABC needs. Now if they would only pick up The Manzinis.
Your crazy!!! Reba McEntire is a hoot!!! she is fabulous!!
Reba is delightful, but this project is awful. There’s not a new thought, take or moment in it. If it gets on, it is truly a testament to her appeal.
No mention of the Manzinis-guess that’s out. So happy about Reba’s show looking good. Absolutely love her & she can be very funny. I still have fond memories of her former self-titled show.
I want to see 666 PARK AVE for Vanessa Williams and DEVIOUS MAIDS for Ana Ortiz (Hilda from Ugly Betty)!
COMEBACK JACK most definitely sounds less creepy than RED VAN MAN. Also, just give Judy Greer a damn show so we can stop hearing about how Judy Greer deserves her own show. (Not that I’m knocking the lovely and talented Ms. Greer.)
I hope 666 and How I Live With Your Parents make it. I miss seeing Elizabeth Perkins (aka Ms Celia Hodes on Weeds) on TV.
Saw The Smart One and it was contrived and unfunny. How Ellen thought “sisters in politics” would make a relatable premise for a sitcom is beyond me.
But what if Seabiscuit pours it on in the homestretch?
What about Prairie Dogs? Heard it’s great. Love Kal Penn!
I saw a few of the ABC pilots and prairie dogs was the best by far. hope it gets a shot.
It was pretty good, but how can it sustain?
Would love to see Devious Maids and Susan Lucci.
These sound good but does anyone know anything about Prairie Dogs, Awesometown and Smart One?
Agree! What about Prairie Dogs? Heard it turned out great.
I knew Beauty & the Beast wouldn’t make it. And it seems like Marc Cherry’s Devious Maids is a repeat of last season’s Hallelujah(?). The guy is mega rich and has been doing what he loves for years and years but honestly, it must suck to get so far in the development of a show two years in a row only to have the network pass on it.
Really? No Roland Emmerich? ABC just got a lot sexier. Good on you!
The Dan Fogelman pilot is so off brand for abc. It’s dark and strange, definitely not female skewing. And the pilot didn’t turn out that good. I’m surprised it is being considered a favorite.
If ABC doesn’t pick up LAST RESORT, they’re out of their minds. Speedman and Braugher and Shawn Ryan? Come on.
666 PARK was great too. But seriously. Just pick up LAST RESORT already, ABC.
Dump them all and renew Scandal, Body Of Proof and GCB.
Man o’ man… Scheuring doesn’t even get a mention. The bastard stepchild he is.
Dying to see 666 Park Avenue & Beauty & The Beast
Roland Emmerich script was horrible & why do we want to see housewives turn into maids – Boring!
So am I. I really hope they’re wrong about Beauty and the Beast dropping out of contention. I really want to see it.
Same! I was really looking forward to Beauty and the Beast, it would make a perfect companion series for Once Upon a Time.
Ah well, if it doesn’t get ordered, at least OUAT has been renewed.
No Gilded Lilys? I love Borrowman!
“No this?” “No that?” This update cleared up nothing, folks. Relax.
Gilded Lilys??? Was this not the big favourite a couple of months ago, the home grown Downton Abbey. Surely this is happening……
