EXCLUSIVE: Ridley Scott’s scifi thriller won’t debut in the U.S. or Canada until June 8th but it’s already started selling movie tickets in France. Fox’s Prometheus opened with $1.5M (Euros 1.12m) for #1 in the market and 40% market share. It was the 2nd highest opening day of 2012, behind The Avengers but 20% ahead of Men In Black 3 and 87% ahead of The Hunger Games. In fact pre-sales for Prometheus in a number of countries are many times the MIB3 levels and should increase now that reviews are coming out and the public is getting a taste of the long-secret story and visuals that is/isn’t a prequel to the Alien franchise. (Oh for crissakes, Fox, just brand it already…) The 9-day jump on foreign box office is due to the Euro Cup beginning June 8th and running through July 1st, so Twentieth Century Fox wants to open box office early for its big summer blockbuster.
It is debuting 15 international markets (20 countries) this weekend — including the UK, France, Russia, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, and Scandinavia – on 4,700 screens, of which 3,300 are 3D. Right now UK presales are around $1.6M (£1m) already. And the IMAX Southbank alone has sold $810K (£500k) making it the largest ever presales at this screen. After that, Prometheus will open day and date in 35 international markets (49 countries) next weekend, including South Korea, Australia, and Taiwan. That will ensure Ridley Scott’s scifi thriller will play on a total 8,000 screens, of which 5,000 are 3D. Most of Latin America is releasing June 14-15, including Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. Releasing later, to avoid the Euro Cup, is host countries Poland and Ukraine, as well as Germany, Spain and Italy. Japan is releasing in August because it was the best circuit booking available in the Nichigeki 1.

I heard the script was bad
yeah, better blow it off, then…
hello…?
you heard wrong so wrong
THIS WAS A GREAT MOVIE,,,CAN’T WAIT FOR PART-2…..
Really looking forward to Prometheus when it opens. Haven’t seen a true sci-fi set in space movie in a long time.
Is the Django Unchained trailer playing before the film?
I believe it’s not going to be shown on international releases of Prometheus that premier this week.
Thank god it’s releasing. I never want to be subjected
to that godawful annoying wailing siezure-inducing
trailer again. That trailer was the most played out
this year to the point where people were actually
walking out. On that note Can’t wait to see how it
performs/opens here in the US
I think you’ll find if people are “walking out” during a trailer they’re just going for a leak, yer know, before the movie starts. They’re not making some kind of noble artistic stand. Just saying.
Gimme a break, Jason. Nobody anywhere has ever walked out on a trailer. Maybe they had to run to the bathroom or grab some popcorn before the movie starts, but that’s the most absurd thought I’ve heard in a while.
Don’t go hating a movie just b/c you’re jealous you had nothing to do with it.
Prometheus is going to open HUGE, and a big reason is how awesome the ads have been.
I think they were getting popcorn. Nobody walks out on a trailer.
It’s true. Paid my $15 to see Avengers and then this trailer started playing. I was like F this and bounced. Spent the day knitting a new sweater.
Me too! I had just paid for my ticket, popcorn & soda pop when that God-awful trailer started. I threw everything at the screen and stormed out.
I showed them!
+4 Internet points!
I am still laughing
IMDB doesn’t recognise Africa like most websites. Any info on Africa or a West African, Nigeria, Ghana.
Open in South Africa next weekend June 8th like the U.S.
Since the teaser trailer was released, the build up to the release has been great. Can’t wait to see it!
can’t wait
the only problem i foresee is being let down due to entering the movie with so much anticipation
I’m French and i saw it yesterday morning. I liked it very much. I haven’t seen any of the Alien movies or any of the trailers for Prometheus so i went in completely unspoiled. As a science fiction fan, this is the movie i’ve been waiting for years. Finally a big budget sci fi movie that doesn’t excuse itself for being what it is and doesn’t try desperately to appeal to non sci fi fans.
Great acting (Fassbender kinda stole the show but Rapace was great and the others were great too), awesome action and special effects (it’s basically non stop action as soon as the ship lands), very good plot.
I don’t think it will be a huge box office hit like Avengers mostly because Prometheus is not very children and family friendly (there are some pretty gruesome scenes) and the movie doesn’t have a lot of funny moments.
Prometheus screams of sequel. Idk where the Alien movies start off but i would be very suprised if they have anything to do with the ending of Prometheus. I feel like this movie opened a whole universe to explore a la Star Trek 2009.
Seeing how some older fans hate irrationaly any new addition to their favorite franchise (Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who,…), I’m sure Prometheus will get its share of unfair hate from older Alien fans.
Has Fassbender ever been in a movie and not stolen the show? The guy is a star and a talent like none other. I’m watching this only for Fassbender.
Nothing this year will be a hit at the level of “The Avengers”, but i can guarantee you that “Prometheus” will be a smash hit(possibly top 5 or 6 of 2012), and a film i’m really looking forward to seeing. Elba, Fassbender, Theron, Pace & Pearce definantly makes for a fine cast. Glad you enjoyed the film friend. Do yourself a favor, when you get the chance watch Alien & Aliens, you won’t be dissapointed, trust me.
I’m French too and as a huge Alien fan I saw it the morning of its release here. I don’t want to sound like a douche, but I don’t get how you can call yourself a sci fan without having seen any Alien film. I’m not saying one has to see every sci fi film to call himself a fan, but anticipating Prometheus “for years” and not going to the trouble to at least watch Alien? I don’t understand..
Regardless, Prometheus was entertaining, beautifully filmed and acted, but the plot isn’t so good. The science in the movie seems pretty bad, but hopefully, if there’s a sequel, some of it will be explained better. Anyway, if you go into the cinema expecting it to match the first two Alien films you will be sorely disapointed. Just go see it with an open mind and enjoy an impressive show.
Hi
I have seen it Brussels two days ago and I was a little bit dissapointed.
It raised more questions than answers and it’s not as good as thought it could be
you mean like bladerunner? i’m in.
Does that monument (pictured) look like Brando in APOCALYPSE NOW or is it just me?
Yeahhh, Prometheus. Can’t wait to see it.
avatar is to aliens as prometheus is to alien.
good point.
Fox should have delayed Prometheus due to the Eurocup and Olympic Games. They could have 2 extra months to polish FX, music and edition.
