The Parents Television Council has been quick to pounce on any number of series or personalities it considers unsafe for the public airwaves, but today’s letter to advertisers of NBC’s America’s Got Talent takes the step of condemning a show that hasn’t had a chance to offend anyone yet. In its missive, the PTC for a second time rips the network for bringing on Howard Stern as a judge on the show in the family-friendly 8 PM time slot. Of course, Talent doesn’t premiere until May 14, but no sense in waiting — let’s just assume Stern is going to provide “a sharp increase in explicit content”. From the letter: “There can be, and there must be, a presumption that Mr. Stern will only continue to conduct himself in precisely the same manner as he has done for decades. Unless and until his conduct consistently reflects and respects the time, place and manner of an 8:00 p.m. broadcast television program, we would urge you and your advertising agency to consider alternate network television programming for your media dollars.” The tactic is similar to the one used last year to attack NBC’s The Playboy Club — though it turned out that series didn’t need much help in being shown the door.

Talent launches with two-hour episodes on May 14 (8-10 PM) and May 15 before settling into its regular time periods of Monday 8-9 PM and Tuesday 9-10 PM. So the PTC will be on call two nights a week to see if its predictions come true.

Crap don’t let the bunnies out
HA!
And again the PTC proves its irrelevancy. They should realize that Howard isn’t stupid. He’s not going to turn this into an additional 2 hours a week of his radio show, and that’s not what he signed up for. He signed up to be a judge on a show.
America’s Got Talent always has been a family-skewing show. It’s not like just because there’s someone with a racy background as a host all of the sudden they’re going to have strippers and prostitutes showing their “talent,” it will remain pretty much the same show.
I say all this as someone who has only listened to a handful of clips from his show. But I did support him in his battles with the FCC and definitely support anyone that goes against the PTC
Not a Stern fan by any means, but PTC needs to learn how to change the channel. The airways are public and we don’t need PTC to protect us from the evils of tv
That’s exactly why the PTC is correct, because the airways of public. If you want to watch filth or a disgusting human being like Howard Stern, there is always cable and other forms of pay TV.
This is such a despicable, pre-reactionary move by a group of irrelevant leaches. Did they lambast Full House when Bob Sagat was cast as a lead? His standup is some of the raunchiest on record.
These backward-thinking morons need to understand public figures have different personas tailored to different forums. Idiocy like this will be herald network television’s death knell.
Not to mention the fact that their criticism is predicated on the PRESUMPTION that he’s going to do something that they won’t like. Stern’s a smart show business guy and knows the difference between his show and “America’s Got Talent.” They should set their sets on real social evils : like I hear Conrad Birdie is going on tour.
Unless they are looking to promote and increase commercial awareness/curiosity regarding the product they intend to boycott (which would make them shrewd inside traders), PTC once again proves they are a woefully out of touch organization, wasting a lot of time and money.
Remember last year when they stated they would be “carefully monitoring every minute of every episode” of the “Playboy Club” tv show on NBC? I’m sure they did. Hilarious.
NBC paid them to do this, right?
America will see a side of Howard they’ve never seen. As others mentioned, he’s not a moron, prepare to be amazed how quickly fans of the show who’ve only heard rumors or for that matter, never heard of him, warm up to him.
Bababooey!
Snore.
Doesn’t this annoying group have anything better to do? I agree that Howard is a smart person. While AGT may be more fun & entertaining with Howard as a judge-it won’t become an x-rated raunchfest. This group should stop telling people what we can & cannot watch. If you don’t like it -change the channel. Also,if you parent your kids well they will hopefully turn out well-adjusted.But,don’t try to parent my kids or tell me what I can/cannot watch. I’ll decide for myself.
PTC= Petty Tyrannical Christians. I just set my DVR to record America’s Got Talent, I suggest everyone pissed at the PTC witch hunts do the same. Hey PTC the Dark Ages is calling oh wait phones are probably magic devil talking sticks.
Uhh, the only strike that should be launched here: on the Photoshop noobs responsible for the outdoor and print ads for this show…Howard’s hair bears an unfortunate resemblance to the pile of donated, synthetic pubic hair also known as Gene Simmons’.
For such a vain, control freak…I cannot believe Stern approved this.
Not to mention how badly proportioned Sharon and Howie are as they try to ‘hush’ Howard…they make Stern look even more like a circus talent on loan. Poor bastard.
With that attitude, it’s no wonder so many of you are out of work, you have one-track minds. There are millions of people who enjoy clean, family entertainment, but instead of satisfying their needs with strong programming, you continually lambaste them for speaking their choices and try to force feed them the same, ever-increasingly dirty bullshit that put you out of work. But you’d rather make bullshit TV, tell parents to “change the channel” and “be responsible for what your kids watch” as TV ratings continue to sink like a stone and more and more of you are unemployed. Seems to me that YOU are the ones thinking like its the dark ages and fail to get with the times.
It’s no wonder that America is in decline when broadcasters have to deal with the Parents Television Council again and again and again.
These knuckle-draggers are deathly afraid of anything that would harm their warped view of America. As if that 1950′s image ever existed.
But, hey, thanks for reminding me to tune in Monday, May 14th at 8 PM on NBC (bing-bong-bing). Gotta love the free publicity the PTC is giving the show. I’ll be sure to tell me friends and perhaps even put a reminder in our church bulletin.
Again, that’s 8 PM. Monday, May 14th. A new season of America’s Got Talent. Now, with Howard Stern. Only on NBC!
The PTC is nothing but a sad excuse for trying to help parents parent. This body of people should be dissolve into the underworld and never to be heard from again. “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” – did you EVER hear this saying before??? just because Howard is who he is on the radio doesn’t mean that the same personality will be shown on tv. He’s aware that he’s going to be on prime time with kids watching, and he’s not going to be vulgar just to make a point. Instead of ALWAYS finding an excuse of why? who? what? or where? things are done the way they do, how about we let parents parent their own kids? this is what’s wrong with this country, everyone and everything has to be PC. Look at other countries, learn from other countries. You can’t raise and shelter your kids from EVERYTHING. Especially with the internet age. How about instead of worrying about Howard Stern on AGT, leave work early, go home and raise your child!
Oh, c’mon. Now you’re being too realistic.
We need the Parents Television Council and faithful Christians to tell us precisely what to do and how to run our lives. The Parents Television Council protects us from all unwanted harm, as does pretty much anything traditional and conservative.
In these trying times with a socialist communist foreign-born atheist Muslim president, we need all the help we can get. Remember back to the gentler days of George W. Bush . . . that was when family and American values and character really mattered.
Hilarious
This is amusing. I went to one of the LA tapings and was surprised to see that Sharon and Howie were the raunchy ones, not Stern.
Ditto. My wife and I attended one of the Manhattan tapings several weeks ago. We are life-long Stern fans and Howard was cordial, fun (in a very clean way) and a great judge of the talent (or lack thereof). Howard will bring new energy and many new fans to the show.
How the hell is anyone a fan of Stern anymore? That corny radio show was played out over 15 years ago. He’s a sad, sad man. It shows you pathetic he is that he’s joined a talent show reality TV program. What’s next? Biggest Loser? Oh wait he already is.
and what are ou doing today that is so sensational compared to 15 years ago?
Oh, yeah, that’s what i thought. Please crawl back in your hole.
What’s more irrelevant? The PTC, or Howard Stern?
Well now I’m for sure going to watch!
Don’t forget, parents television council is nothing but about 14 people who write many letters in different handwriting and have the letters mailed from different regions of the country. That’s it.
Two weeks from now, when the show (and Stern) is doing great, PTC will take credit for everything!
And if the show is not doing great, they will take credit for that too.
not judging Howard Stern who he is or was but really wishing that he strips off his old personality and put on the new on American Got Talent because this is definitely a FAMILY SHOW.
