The season finales of Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy brought ABC good numbers last night. The Season 8 finale of Grey’s Anatomy (3.9/11) at 9 PM saw the show up 11% from last week, drawing 11.9 million total viewers. Wrapping up its first season, political drama Scandal (2.4/7) was up 26% from last week’s season low in its 10 PM slot. The 8 PM finale of the now-cancelled Missing (1.3/4) saw an 18% jump from last week’s series low.
On American Idol (4.2/14), the contestants were down to a final two and the show was up 8% over last week, making it the night’s top show in the adults 18-49 demo and among total viewers (15.8 million) — its highest viewer total since March 29. After Idol, Touch (1.8/5) was down 5% from last week. Fox won the night in the demo. CBS edged Fox 11.27 million-11.09 million in total viewers.
CBS’ The Big Bang Theory (2.4/8) at 8 PM was a repeat followed at 8:30 by the season finale of Rules Of Engagement (2.1/7), which was down 22% from last week. NBC went all out with Community, scheduling three separate episodes: The 8 PM Community (1.3/5) was down 7%, as was the 9 PM Community (1.3/4) and the season-finale 9:30 PM Community (1.3/4) with 2.5 million viewers overall for the last of the trio. Weaved in there, at 8:30, the season finale of 30 Rock (1.3/4) was down 13%. Coming up the end of NBC’s comedy night at 10 PM, Awake (0.7/2) ended 22% down from last week and tied for a series low. On the CW, Perez Hilton All Access: Katy Perry (0.3/1) at 8 PM was followed by a Vampire Diaries (0.2/1) repeat. At 9 PM, CBS’s Person of Interest (2.5/7) finale was down 4% from last week. With 13 million viewers, The Mentalist (2.5/7) however, saw it’s fourth-season finale up 4% … but Patrick Jane probably already knew that.

Grey’s traumatized me last night with the death of Lexi (played by the uber talented Chyler Leigh). I rarely cry at films or tv shows but last night had me in ugly cry tears. The scene was gut-wrenching and brilliant, and featured a surprisingly great performance by Eric Dane. That being said, the overall episode felt a tad off. They focused too much on the hospital staff going through their normal routines, too much on trying to insert humor, etc. And the pacing was off. Also, the ending was a tad bland, when it could have instead ended with one of the other injured cast members suddenly killing over and they struggle in the cold darkness to save them and then BAM we cut to black. Instead it was like ok…we have to wait to see if they get rescued. We know they will, so it was a slightly anti-climactic cliffhanger.
Obviously, Scandal shot its ending hoping to return in some fashion. Instead it was the series finale.
Is there anyone out there that has the slightest notio/clue as to whom the girl (original client that in first scene of first episode appeared to be getting “hired” on the team) at the end really is and what her real name being revealed had to do with it all?
If no truth is out there, I suppose we could just make something up.
Um, it’s been renewed.
Except that it is coming back with 13 episodes next season….
Scandal was picked up for a second season, so we just have to wait until September to learn who she is.
Scandal’s ingenue turns mystery woman in the finale and her past is the cliffhanger wtf?
Yeah, it was a weak finale ending. We don’t even care that much about Quinn to care who she really is. Some of the other stuff in the episode was good though. The editors, as usual, make the writing seem much more exciting than it actually is. I saw that Roxann Dawson directed this episode and I thought she did a really good job.
Shonda fan. Lots of TV watch however. People whose creative opinions I trust have specifically told me to stay away from Scandal. For ever.
Clearly, they also told you to stay away from an English teacher, a classroom, and the best new show on TV.
Your loss….
I LOVE THAT SHOW!! So glad it was picked up! I hope it’s as raw, juicy, sexy and intriguing as the whole first season. Bravo to everyone involved. I can’t wait to find out who Quinn really is!! Make it good people!!!(…and by “people,” I mean Shondra).
Grey’s 12 million viewers and a 3.9 demo? Scandal up BIG- 26%. Yes, it was a good night for Shondaland.
Scandal truly is one of the best shows of the year. Fantastic, congrats to everyone involved!! The writing is truly getting as good as the West Wing. The last bunch of eps have been amazing.
I’m hooked as well…but will we really only get 13 episodes next year? Why not a full season of 22 or 24 episodes?
ABC has the option for the ‘back nine’ or nine more episodes. Unless the show bombs, they’ll take it.
Shondaland had an impressve but bizarre week with a stellar Private Practice both creatively and in ratings, stellar Scandal, up in numbers and also a great episode, and huge numbers for Grey’s with what had to be one of the strangest installments of that show ever. She gets credit for lots of hard work. But boy was GA offkilter.
Initially could not imagine that she was really writing that finale legitimately not knowing which actors were coming back. But seeing what a mess it was in places, the bizarre pacing and chopped up feel, guess she was telling the truth about not knowing, and also about having torn it up and rewritten it “at least 20 times.”
ABC or whomever was responsible for not getting the actors in place with enough time for them to do right by the story, should be embarrassed. And man there were almost as many commercials as show. On dvr it felt like a half-hour. And the nothing ending with them all just plopped in the dirt in the woods? Lazy and unfulfilling.
And the Lexie death was just odd. Acting was very well done, surprisingly so for Eric Dane. But the scene was too short, too early in the hour and offered no closure as no one even checked to see if she was breathing. Wtf? And it made so little sense after a two- season investment in a deepened brother-sister vibe with Derek and ramping up of the intensified longing for Sloan.
The character’s exit seemed almost ambiguous, like could this whole nightmare in the woods be a dream? Awful TV if they go that way, and they have made it clear that Chyler Leigh is done. But a forthcoming alternative time episode or dream couldn’t make things much worse than the mess already created. Fans appear intensely passionate with thousands and thousands of comments online. But they are feeling so majorleague betrayed, not just by the death but by the strange quality of this non-finale, difficult to tell if it’s just temporary or if they’re so let down many really won’t be back in the Fall.
well of course awake will will have low ratings when it competes against greys anatomy especially the finale. greys anatomy was gut wrenching! they left it off like that cause some people still haven’t resigned for season 9 like Callie Arizona mark baily. then you got Meredith Derek and Cristina signed 2 more seasons so we will see. the actress who plays Arizona (in whom i wish was the one who died Lexie
or will still die) i hear she is pregnant in real life so she may not re sign. back to awake to bad for the low ratings it is a good show but i admit it I tivo it but watch it and its good!!! scsndle is alright.
I am so hooked on Scandal! I can’t wait to see what the new season will bring. The show had me glued in every Thursday.
