UPDATE: American Idol was adjusted up to a 6.4 adults 18-49 rating in the finals, making the drop from last year 30%. It is still the lowest-rated Idol finale by a wide margin. Also adjusted up by a tenth in the final ratings are ABC’s Modern Family (4.1/11) and Law & Order: SVU (2.0/5), while Don’t Trust The B— was adjusted down to a 2.4/6.
PREVIOUS: Given that American Idol had been tracking 30% lower than last season, this is not a surprise, but last night’s finale from 8-10:07 PM delivered a preliminary 6.1/18 among adults 18-49. It is projected to go up to a 6.3 rating in the finals, which would still be down 32% from last season’s finale to post the veteran reality series’ lowest-rated closer ever — including the first cycle, which aired in the summer. In total viewers, Idol drew 21.5 million, according to Fox projections, also an all-time low for an Idol finale. The steep year-to-year declines follow a rise for last season’s finale, the first with Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler as judges, vs. 2010. Compared with last week, Idol was up 43%. Compared with The Voice‘s Season 2 finale, Idol was higher by 43% in 18-49. Fox won Wednesday night in adults 18-49, total viewers and all other key demos. (Below is a tracker of the American Idol finales’ total viewer and 18-49 results).

Modern Family (4.0/11) was up a tenth from last week and down a tenth from the fast national for last year’s finale, which also aired against the final Idol show. The season finale of Don’t Trust The B—- (2.5/7) was up 32% from last week, the Revenge closer (2.4/6) was up 20%. NBC’s Off Their Rockers finale (1.5/5) was up 7% from last week, Law & Order: SVU‘s (1.9/5) was up 12% but down 34% from last season’s finale.

Wow, that decline year over year is unacceptable–Fox needs to fix this franchise ASAP.
Who are they fooling, we love Idol.
132 Million Votes from 400k people. LMAO! make it 10 votes per person and eliminate the poor talent with good looks making it to the finals.
Getting ready to watch “Duets”. Looks like a better format with the judges taking part. I guess Jlo could never do this show as all she can do is Lip Sync…
How you do fix it without fixing the results? American Idol needs female winners like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. White men and black men do not experience a lasting recording career. Black women seem to do a little better. In the last 5 years, the results are blah.
Totally agree. It’s a fargone conclusion that the winner is going to be a (wh) male…so people turn off.
It’s the way they handle voting. If they would turn it around and simply vote for who you want voted off the show then they would get more accurate results. Not perfect but better.
However I do agree with the winner last night. Jessica was the better vocalist but Phil Philips was the better entertainer.
It’s not a fair setting. If both of them were given good winner song material and still I can say Phillip Phillips is still so much better than Jessica’s then we can say he really is the winner. But Jessica has a song with awful lyrics and awful production. IMO its like they set Jessica to fail.
So easy and so P/C to bash white males at every instance possible- -is the Hollywood way. Girls/women who vote en mass for the ‘cute’ boys. Did not occur to you for some reason. I’m gay [how about you?] and I like ‘bears’ D you know what that means? The big unshaved, blue collar for real or not, guys never last very long in the competition. Or my respone to you could be that female voters make sure only twink and pretty boy males go through. Also, how dare they have a white male announcer..Ryan Seacrest should be booted for a transgnder biracial amputee.
I have to disagree. I think it’s less to do with the sex and skin color of the winners (Fantasia and Jordin Sparks haven’t exactly reached the heights of Clarkson or Underwood) and more to do with the mediocrity of their talent. It’s easy to win over a bunch of tweens and screaming girls, but that doesn’t translate to sales.
American Idol is about pop music. The format and audience that it attracts should be most beneficial to the white female singer. That is why Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson have the most successful careers from the AI wins.
Lets be clear, Fantasia and Jordin Sparks are talented singers. Its just that they appeal is limited and they don’t do much for pop music.
Well, first off the only one of these you mentioned that is pop is Kelly Clarkston. Carrie Underwood is country. As far as Fantasia she is very talented but Jordan Sparks is a train wrech.
What they need to do is make the rules that allow only truly unknown talent in the competition and not someone in an existing group or one that did not make it in the business. No back up singers for some other singer either. That only skews the judging. They should also consider raising the age of the performers to maybe 50 and they just may be able to grab a larger demographic age group.
As far as the male female thing, sorry gals, the guys just had better talent.
Absolutely. Phil Phillips? I mean, really? As long as judges continue to advance these “Indy” “Coffee House” type performers no one is going to want to watch.
I watched a few episodes of IM this season (never have before) and thought the format “sucked” when females with some talent were voted off while PP, with his Dave Mathews (unable to hit the notes)wannabee voice, was not kicked off… probably to the lttle female tweens that kept this non-talent on. The show, and the judges, suck!! I will never watch this crap again!!!
Are you kidding me. I picked Phillip from the beginning. I love the guy. And the judges didnot promote him. They promoted Jessica, who in my opinion was not that good. But to each his own, don’t you think. So don’t watch, but I will.
I agree with you completely… Jessica got robbed! But I believe that her talent will not be lost….
In my opinion, Elise Testone was the best singer/entertainer/performer and should have won……but she was destroyed by the inept judges and Jimmy.
I don’t think this guy could sing the melody if he tried and they say what he does to the song is creative? It all sounded like the same song to me. The results were not based on talent but the hormones of teenie boppers. I’m giving up on idol.
Yes. Agreed.
When the voting is left to teeny boopers what do you expect! They should come up with a format that gives the judges a percentage of the vote for the final contestant because the judges have more knowledge about talent than pre-teens who vote with their hormones.
Its a talent show. Worry about the sales later, and clearly the lady with the talent lost to a mediocre WGWG.
This argument that Idol only wants White Guys to win is stupid since the two most successful Idol winners are Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Talent Show NO. Teenage Girl Popularity Contest YES. Jessica Sanchez BLEW Philip Phillips away. If this was really a Talent Show, she would have WON. This WGWG (White Guy With Guitar” for 5 consecutive years is living Proof. I think XFactor and The Voice are at this time, a Better example of Singing Competitions. I’m personally threw with IDOL.
And where did the term WGWG come from? You people are like sheep. AI started that term and you all just jumped right in there like fish to water. If you really want to look at it the girl was voted off by the voting public a few weeks ago and only saved by the judges, again an AI thing. It should have been the guy that finished as third if you wanna get down to it. He actually had more talent than either of these two.
Yeah. Its also easier to sing someone else’s work. THE KEY is getting with the right songwriter to come up with your OWN songs.
Really? Now Idol is racist too? That’s why we had a Asian 16-year old in the finals? I agree the wrong person won, but when you have a bunch of hormone-crazed teenage girls as the bulk of your audience, what do you expect? Let’s not make it about race.
No, Idol is not racist. I make no charge.
I merely said there needs to be more female winners.
Change it from American Idol to Judges Choice is what you’re saying, right?
White men? Yeah, I guess Paul McCartney, George Strait and about a hundred others are inconvenient little factoids to ruin your garbage assertion huh?
Paul McCartney and George Strait don’t need American Idol.
Hey they almost did fix it by the judges saving her after she had been voted off a few weeks earlier or did we just forget that part?
They have to get rid of judges that fall in love with certain competitors. They were totally in love with Jessica, and when she got voted out she should have gone home. In my opinion she made it hard to watch the show, the songs were old and weren’t anything I would ever buy. I ended up fast forwarding most of the time through her songs. They were just brutal. She is a great singer, but music has changed from what she sings.
Your comments are spot on.
Totally agree! The show/judges are constantly trying to shape the results. The girl (Jessica) is really great but Compared to Skylar and a couple of the others let go earlier on, I wouldn’t be interested in buying her music!
Of all the girls on the show I think Skylar is going to be a buig country star. She’s got the whole package.
Agree — that’s what Jimmy criticized too, but she kept on singing those big power ballads. Maybe she was just happy to make it to #2?
Considering how well #2 contestants do compared to winners I’m sure she was very happy.
Loubrownguy, very well said!
I’m not saying that the judges all have to be as hardnosed as Simon was, but when you see that constant fawning over a competitor… it looks so bogus, and makes the whole thing meaningless.
If they go back to the original format, make the competitors REALLY work and sweat.. Idol may regain some of it’s success.
But, Americans are fickle, and have extremely short attention spans (that’s why we’re almost toast from a political perspective). Most have moved on to other reality shows, like cleaning outhouses, or analyzing celebrity toenail clippings…
They need to get rid of the three judges, they need to do more judging, less praising of poor performances.
And, no more judges performing on stage! Get your own show.
I don’t watch much any more, too over the top everything.
Ditto on the “get your own show”. I am not an IDOL fan, but did watch it last year and, I have to agree that having the judges perform is so lame.
+1
C’mon…Jessica could flat sing and PP just made noise with gravel in his voice. A disappointing finale.
I loved Jessica and her songs, but I’m a 66 year old white guy.
100% agree. Jessica and her boring songs, and the judges shoving her down her our throat night after night as the second coming. And yet they ripped Hollie apart, when she was essentially a toss-up with Jessica. Ripping Hollie because she didn’t “feel” what she was singing. I never once thought Jessica felt anything. (Except, possibly, entitled to win.) We gave up on the show. The judges have ruined the show.
The judges picked these singers, so they have not ruined the show, it has been widely said that this has been the top 10 best singers the show has ever seen. And if there is anyone who is being pushed down your throat it would be joshua — who just had to walk out and get standing ovations. Jessica Sanchez is a true star and a great singer and should have won and obviously you are in the minority because she made it to the finals.
The only reason she made it to the finals was the idiotic “save” that the judges get to use. Don’t forget she was voted out and saved.
american idol wants to have a lounge singer only like Philip Philips,my gosh he cannot even sustain a high note in every songs ,especially stand by me ,he murdered the song, its very clear that Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell are quite better to be in AI
YES! The judges were all about Joshua this year and I was sick to death of him by the end of the season. Him and his over the top runs and screaming, that wasn’t singing, got on my last nerve. FF was my best friend when it came to AI this year. I’m also sick to death of Ryan Seacrest’s dramatic pauses and attempts to inspire enthusiasm for a show that needs an Extreme Makeover. The whole format is too long with too much BS filler. Quit trying to stretch it out for more of those advertising dollars. Give us something better, like The Voice, did with judges putting their reps where their mouths are and mentoring these kids but let America judge ALL of them, including the mentors. That way if a mentor does bad, they get kicked off, too! Higher stakes for the mentors that way and a better show for us. Just a thought…
I agree. The kiss ass judges gotta go
100% agree, I hate the self promoting of the Judges and their careers and their constant crticism of certain contestants. I hate the format of the Judges getting a save why should they? America is the one who votes? A1 should revamp the way the do the voting procedure. They should only allow a certain number. I like the way Dancing with the Stars does their voting. Nobody has time to sit up all night and vote except the teenages. I have been watching this show for years. They finally got it right with the producer but the judges shouls stop criticizing them. Their comments are unwarranted how can you tell Hollie she picked a bad song and can’t “feel” but not stoic and that girl with no personality Jessica? Jessica was 16 years old singing songs that she had no idea what they meant. Ridiculous to me to have a 16 year old singing the songs. I wouldn’t buy it. Phillip was different entertaining and never in the bottom 3. Go Phillip.
I’ll probly pick Jessica’s CD at any day than that awkward guitar strumming dude.
In the final competition Jessica’s songs were boring, Idol=show person as well. She has an outstanding voice but so did others that were voted off. She did not have the “it” factor that made you want to listen to her and watch her perform. Skyler was entertaining. Jessica has a good shot at making a career if she makes the right choices. Fantasia was a train wreck to begin with, she needed to get her life under control.
Problem is look at the ratings when Hollie, and Ledet were booted.
I place the blame solely on the backs of the ONE’s who are used to HELP them pick the best song for their genre.
Epic fail for Jessica, and Hollie.
Final three IF the right songs were chosen for the girls would have been Ledet,Hollie, and Jessica.
Buy the Songs off iTunes,(I did,the one’s I liked) and the quality of some of the songs, are the same w/Jessica, and Hollie, Ledet not quite so godd, on 2-3 of his,but great on others.
IOW, remove all the background visuals, and you find out WHO is the talent.
DosZap, you nailed it. Get rid of the distracting, over-produced background visuals and we’d be able to see who the better talent really is. There were precious few production values In the first few seasons of AI so it was clear from the get-go who had real talent and who didn’t. Now, everything is like a J-Lo extravaganza.
“American Idol” relies heavily on formula. You only get a snapshot of the contestants, so the viewer never really develops a sufficient connection with any of them. Sure, Hollie Cavanaugh is cute and adorable and has little girl feelings, and she has a dog at her family house where we think she lives; Joshua Ledet is sexual in a curious Little Richard sort of way, yet off-putting at the same time, and needs to be prodded to hug his father; the rest are forgettable, except for Phillip Phillips, whose charisma is such that he includes us in that it’s all a big joke and that’s why we ended up voting for him. Well, that and his talent.
You don’t need to tear the throat out of the show and add story gimmicks. The show has had a good run–its just not appealing to a wider audience as cable, social media, and internet take more of people’s time.
Also, I’m pretty sure people are pirating episodes more than ever, which aren’t included in the numbers.
Wow! PP has talent? Not saying I know everything… but I have been a musician for many years and his music and voice very uninteresting. Hard to understand your position on this guy.
well said
I don’t know how they’re going to “fix it” unless they cut those 2 hours down to one. It’s too doggone long. But it’s still the highest rated show….everybody’s show is down this season, so I don’t see why the headlines are so sensational.
I agree that the final needs to be one hour. We didn’t watch until the last 10 minutes because that is all we care about. Never mind all the fluff and bringing people back. Just get to the final choice.
Fox needs to figure out how to fix the problem of Idol being a popularity contest controlled by women voters. It has become almost impossible for women to win this (and not that I was rooting for any particular female, I stopped watching around the final 16 — ALL contestants this time were BORING and had zero personality)
Last year was better, but I admit I stopped watching after James Durbin got booted.
There is too much cheesy pop and the group singalongs at the beginning of shows are embarassing.
And what exactly is the purpose of the judges, except to mold the contestants into a direction of their choosing (which is obviously failing, see ratings) and to tell viewers what to think, since they assume viewers are not smart enough to know if they like something they hear.
My formula for rejuvenation:
1. Replace the judges with three hard ass, grumpy judges who are hands on.. Have the contenstants work hard to win the judges.
2. Introduce some rock and energy into the show, get rid of the cheese, especially the singalongs. Unless you are aiming to have an audience of tweens, of course.
3. Introduce some side stories.. there should be self contained mini competitions each week, to create variety and interest. have contenstants challeng each other in singing competitions, rotate contestants into a judge seat, etc.
Just some thoughts.
Need to fix it with a judge who is not a preverted old man like Steven Tyler. He’s why our family stopped watching. Simon may have been obnoxious, but at least you didn’t have to worry about him swearing, and making inappropriate comments about women.
I don’t know why everyone is making a big deal out this. ALL TV ratings are way down. Idol is still #1.
Hollie was the class act yet the judges never gave her a chance!
We loved American Idol before Steven Tyler leered at young contestants. I refused to watch again. I am sorry for the contestants that have to put up with Hollywood elite that live their lives in a bubble. I teach my kids about integrity and character. Where is that in Hollywood?
Why the low ratings? I sincerely believe that the judges turned off the audience. The best two singers were Joshua and Jessica. These two both gave excellent performances throughout the contest and were always given excellent reviews by the judges.
The problem started when it got down to the final three contestants. Joshua was given the worse song of the night to sing. It sounded like a drug song about cocaine and whatever while the same person gave Phil Phillips a song right in his comfort level. The judges overly praised Philipps while underscoring Joshua and Jessica. No surprise, Joshua gone.
We now have Jessica and Phil left. Jessica is given a song by the executive producer and sings it magnificently while Phil Phillips struggled. This was overlooked by the judges and they just toned down the criticism. After song number three, the judges tore down Jessica badly about her night while over praising Phil. Steven Tyler stated that Phillips was a winner.
These people worked hard all year to get where they did and the judges ruined it for the viewers. The are artists who have a very outstanding fan base and their remarks are heard by their base and votes may swing on their assessments of the performers. IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS WAY.
Next year let the final four fight it out without the judges assessments of praise nor criticism. Let these young adults pick their own songs to sing and let the responsibility fall on their nights performances. Let the voters vote for their favorite and not the judges.
Why watch the final show when the winner was selected the night before by the judges.
I ask Fox to get the final three tapes and look at them and make their judgement. My own preference was Joshua or Jessica with Phil Phillips coming in third.
I can tell you exactly why I’m bored with the show. The new judges along with Randy try to push through their favorites. The bash the ones they don’t want in the finals, and find no wrong in the ones they like.
Watching them give Josh a standing ovation for each performance was sickening, I knew they’d do it before he sang a word. They also said he’s the best voice they’d heard in 50 years. What???
While he’s a good singer, he will get lost in the industry, they should have pushed hard to keep colton, elise, and Skylar in as they were at least entertaining. Both Jessica and Phillip were flat out boring. I’m not saying they’re not good singers, but neither really stepped out of their comfort zone very much.
Again the judges killed it for me. All this “You’re beautiful no matter how you sing” is garbage. The show severly needs Simon Cowell like honesty, and while he was an arrogant fool sometimes, people really appreciate him giving it to the singers straight. The current crop of judges find very little fault in the contestants. First night after hollywood, they had nothing bad to say. Really? Nothing bad the performances were sub par, but they’re so afraid to say things that might hurt someone’s feelings, they just pretend it’s the best performance they heard.
BTW Fantasia looked horrible, that outfit made her look like an avocado with legs, and she screeched through the whole song. what a disappointment. And the chick who sang alongside Jessica was a freak. I would expect that kind of performance at a circus or low rent comedy club. But it was a trainwreck and I couldn’t stop watching even though my finger kept twitching on the fast forward.
The one thing that made this show bad this year was, Jimmie, it might as well been the Jimmie Idol show. I couldn’t stand to hear his comments week after week, they were irrelevant since you had 3 judges, why did he get more air time than the artist or judges ??? For Idol to continue they need to shut Jimmie up!!!
Good, we can only wish that reality shows ratings continue to plummet so this chapter in ‘Japanese game show mentality programming by Network Executives “accountants” will be a laughable historical foot note in University classes on the history of television right along side of Big Hair Video Bands and Disco Balls.
The suspense is gone. AI voters have been very consistent in the last few seasons. You pretty much know that if it’s a guy versus a girl, the guy will win. And if it’s a Southerner versus a Northerner, the Southerner will win.
This finale had a Southern guy, so you knew — without ever hearing either sing — what would happen.
It’s the same thing over and over, every year. I personally don’t like the critic guy that is supposedly the expert.
Agree here too. Jimmy’s comments are often contradictory (from what he says in the “rehearsal” to what he states post a performance.
Love Tyler but he adds no value. Jennifer is too “nice”. Randy is wishy-washy.
I miss Simon because he was the only one that gave it “straight up”.
I’m a big fan of the “Sing Off”. Those judges are always right on with their reviews and offer substance.
This show can be canceled for all I care. I no longer watch… burn out and judge changes did it in for me. The entire competition show idea ran its course for me a long time ago, right along with reality shows.
Yet, you still read articles/blog entries about the show. Interesting.
Then don’t watch. I love to watch so why should you care if it is on or not. Why do you want to ruin it for those of us who like. Selfish, don’t you think?
Frankly, does anyone care. It fits right in with the rest of the crap on TV!
no, dont fix it. let it die.
What is amazing is that this contrived “singing” contest has been wasting bandwidth for all these years.
Idol is tiring, and old, and boring. The show has been airing with the same tired format since I graduated college. And without Simon it’s just not the same. It gets boring watching the same lousy singers for the first few episodes, and then they get whittled down. It’s always these young kids over and over again, so boring.
With Twitter and Facebook, west coasters don’t need to watch the finale.
This! All I had to do was log into Twitter at 7:30 p.m. to see who won. Saves me the trouble.
Someone needs to inform Neil Diamond he can no longer sing, ok? I felt sorry for him.
He did look ‘tucker’out? He was here on Maui back in Feb and just ripped it!Bucket list night!
You got that right. When the contestants started singing his songs, I’m, oh, no, not Neil Diamond songs again. I hate his singing and when he came out, it made me wish for Barry Manlow, whom I don’t care for either.
As the past five years results show, this competition is decided by the throbbing hearts of 13-year-old girls. Those of us who used to watch and cheer for the best singers/performers realized this and stopped watching long ago. It looks like more and more watchers are figuring this out.
Totally agree. They need to limit your number of votes or better yet charge a small fee. That would end this teeny bopper dull southern guy winning every year. Cannot believe Nigel doesn’t get it
That’s not going to happen. They make too much money off all those calls and if people had to pay to vote, there would be no votes.
So, you don’t like it. Well I do and I’m 71 years old. My entire extended family likes it and they are all different ages, and we all vote. Remember people have different tastes so you may like one person and I might like someone else, so we vote and the most votes wins. I’m not always happy with the outcome either, but I always tune in the next season. This season had the most talent every. I loved Phillip thought Jessica stunk, but I know a lot of other people liked her. So why do you want to cancel the show because it doesnt’ suit your taste. Just turn it off.
I’m 67 and a white guy, but I voted for Phillip because he is original. Jessica tried to hard to sound like all the other old divas of the past 40 years. She dressed like a hooker. Who advises these young girls? Lady Gaga?
I’m disappointed at the racism here, though. Since when is being white something to disparage? I really liked Joshua because he reminded me of the great black singers of the 60s, Sam Coooke, particularly. But he was just boring after a while. Samo ole same ole.
Past IDOL Watcher,
You are absolutely correct! It’s the 13-year-old tweeny girls who are deciding Idol’s winner, and everything is geared toward them. Older (24-years-old and up) singers are removed pretty early, even if they have incredible voices. The judges fall all over 16 and 17-year-old candidates. “You’re only sixteen!” As a 56-year-old adult, I think their voices are not yet mature enough to please, and they don’t have enough life experience to be able to emote. This year’s winner should have been Joshua Ledet, but he was singing our music (older-style music) perfectly. Sounded like James Brown reincarnated. The tweeny girls don’t know what good music should sound like, and were simply placing an emotion-based vote.
I’m definitely turning to The Voice and to X Factor in the future, and will not watch Idol any more. Idol is no longer about a singing competition. It’s simply a popularity contest, dominated by the tween girls.
“Revenge” finale was awesome! Cannot wait for 2nd season to come. HUGE SPOILER: They should totally cast Heather Locklear as Amanda’s mother. She’s soap opera royalty and it would be fabulous to see her sharing the screen with Madeleine Stowe. The bitchness in full mode! END OF SPOLER
What an AWESOME suggestion!Heather Locklear would be an great additoni to the cast.
I stopped watching this season because the show has grown pretty stale and the judges have turned into whiney b*tches. Steven Tyler is a joke, Jennifer Lopez never met a butt she didn’t want to kiss, and Randy Jackson needs to go away. Yo dog! You were a little pitchy this time. And who ever told Ryan Seacrest he was talented. This show needs a total revamp or needs to be cancelled.
You nailed it. Jennifer and Steven need to go, they are only there to promote themselves, and Randy, oh please…
All 3 judges need to go!
Thankfully, Lopez is going!
Steven needs his mouth taped with his filthy language.
HONEST judges are needed in order for Idol to survive. Also, stop the ‘Save’!!
Stop the extra 3…if 10 make it to the finals, that should be final!(with honest judging!)
Limit the number of votes!
I thought this was the best season ever. If you don’t like the show, turn it off.
Hey, the show is making gobs of cash and still has the largest audience. Every year some people stop watching and others start watching. If you want out, fine, but don’t expect Fox to fix something that isn’t really that broken.
I wish Jennifer Lopez would ditch the bro music and dancing. Jennifer is a nice looking lady but her music and dancing makes her look as nasty as a street hooker. I sure wouldn’t pay a penny to go see her in any show.
clearly this is rigged – he was the poorest singer of the final 50.
votes rigged and judges didnt want to appear to contradict american public opinion or the show simply chose who they wanted to win making the “voting” results up.
Tyler actually said “You don;t hafta hit the notes” to this guy!
i’m out.
Well, good ridance. I love the show, I love Steven Tyler, and I loved Phillip. Why can’t I have a show I like, just because you don’t like it. Your TV does have a channel changer.
What do you expect from a nation of useless, shallow, ADD riddled sheep? Baaahhhh go the sheep. One day it’s cool to watch idol, the next it’s lame. Baaahhh go the sheep. Facebook will go the same way. Changing the judges won’t matter. It’s nothing more than an overhyped, high school talent show with talentless morons judging the talent. The ONLY reason I would watch an episode or two a few years ago was to see the trainwreck that was Paula. Sad sacks…all of them. America…if you want to idolize someone, try doing so with people of substance, not the here today and gone tomorrow losers that comprise this pathetic show.
Amen to that, totally agree.
They need to get rid of the judges who constantly try to steer the outcome and prevent elimination of their favorites. Secondly, they need to stop forcing country singers to sing rock, etc, and stop forcing “beatles night, elvis night, motown night, michael jackson night, etc” on everyone. Let them sing their own style.
The problem with American Idol is that the three judges had very little of interest to say following each performance. They generally said all the singers were fantastic once they had narrowed them down to the final 12. That made the shows quite boring. In addition, the values American Idol is promoting are increasingly out of step with its viewers: the show had 42-year old Lopez parading her 25-year old lover on stage; Steven Tyler was showcased in the finale with a bevy of playmates and his sister making out with a stranger; and one of the finalists, Jessica Sanchez kept wearing outfits that were inappropriate for her age. If Fox wants to save Idol, they should dump Lopez and Tyler and get folks who better embody the values of Fox viewers. American Idol is supposed to be family fun. We don’t want more liberalism shoved down our throats.
The good news is that Phillip Phillips was a deserving winner! And before him, Scotty McCreery was a fabulous choice too. The viewers respond to contestants with apparently sound values. Why don’t the producers wake up and smell the coffee? Ditch the libertines and give us smart and respectable judges! The franchise is worth saving; it is so beautiful to watch people pursuing the American Dream.
Consider this: All the WGWG except Scotty have failed miserably in the recording and touring department. One more WGWG won’t make it right. The show needs “stars”, the judges need to choose “stars”…it’s telling that Carrie Underwood is the BIGGEST IDOL star and that was 6 seasons ago!
Regardless of how well the idol contestants have done in their careers. I’ll bet every one of them is grateful for the opportunity. I love this show and seeing these young artists get a chance.
What you said is very true, however, Fox won’t change a thing and I hear that Ellen Degeneres is going to make a comeback to Idol, that would be a mistake.
Now that might cause me to not watch.
Oh cmon. Do you honestly think that this guy will sell records? Given his mediocre talent (a copy cat of Dave Matthews if I may add) this guy is headed straight to oblivion. It would have been a turning point for the show if Jessica won, breaking the WGWG stigma. And clearly the girl is a better singer. The finale should have been Jessica and Joshua. This show’s going down. No one to blame other than those crazy little 13 year old girls desperately voting for a clearly talentless act.
I agree as well. And thhere should be a way to limit the voting to one vote per phone number. I think it would be much more accurate. It resembles the Chicago way. Vote early and often.
AMEN!!!!!
Could not agree more.
Considering the whole season they have aired Wed/Thur format – I wonder how many ‘casual’ viewers (like me) had no idea the finals would air Tues/Wed.????
I know!! I had no clue it was a Tues/Wed finale. I was too busy on Tuesday watching the repeat of Monday’s America’s Got Talent..lol.
It seems more obvious that the producers of American Idle engineer the winner every year, especially this year. We won’t be watching next year.
Suit yourself. And BTW – the rest of us won’t miss you at all.
So, because someone you don’t like won, the fix was in? How arrogant is that.
I’m curious who the 2007 winner was. I would not be surprised to find it was Fantasia. She was the worst “winner” ever and I think most people felt the “fix” was in to place her on top. This made many people doubt the credibility of the show.
I highly disagree. Fantasia was the best singer of all the winners.
She looked (and sounded) a mess last night, but Fantasia was great when she was a contestant. Very unique, very talented, and lots of personality. Voices like Jessica’s are good but a dime a dozen and offer nothing new, at least for this middle-aged white man.
I loved Fantasia back then. She was my choice, but she was awful last night and every time I have seen her lately. I love the way people decide the fix is in when there choice doesn’t win. It is comical.
oops! I meant “their”
The show has been rigged from day one. My favorite didn’t win this season. I’m not saying it’s rigged now… I’m saying it’s rigged from day 1. They choose the winner from the start (but after auditions obviously). American Idol is rigged, always has been.
I’m not ashamed to admit I was a huge Idol fan. The last few years my interest started to wane. Barely watched it this year. The show became so very drawn out. Love the judges and format overall. The show needs to be more condensed in my humble opinion. Simon should return with Paula.
LOL…….people who can’t sing judging people who can.. Paula and jennifer wish they had some of these people’s voices… I wonder how they ever made it with the voices they have..
I’m quite disappointed with Fox this year as once again as they have in past seasons they’ve gone and canceled some of the most interesting and entertaining shows on TV, nearly the only ones my wife and I watch, and unveiled plans to put even more reality shows on in their place. Can’t stand these things to begin with but the saturation level is ridiculous. We’re getting close to the point where we’re just going to shut off the cable and watch repeats of Firefly, Dollhouse, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Alcatraz, House and The Finder again and again.
thats because all the finalists SUCKED. they cant polish Underwood’s boots!
