Robert Pattinson has been cast as one of the leads in David Michod’s The Rover. The film chronicles a man who relentless pursues a gang who stole his car through the wild and rough Australian outback of the near future. Pattinson, best known for playing Edward in the Twilight franchise, will play Reynolds, the brother of one of the thieves who is left behind when an encounter with the police goes very wrong. Guy Pearce co-stars in the film as the man in search of his car. David Linde’s Lava Bear and Liz Watts’ Porchlight are producing the film. Pattinson was just attached to star in Jean-Stephane Sauvaire’s Mission Blacklist, and he also toplines the David Cronenberg-directed Cosmopolis that is in competition at this month’s Cannes Film Festival. David Michod is repped by UTA, Australian Agent Jane Cameron at Cameron Cresswell and attorney Alan Wertheimer. UTA Independent Film Group is representing The Rover for sale. Pattinson is repped by WME, 3 Arts, and Curtis Brown.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

Good for Pattinson, though. I’ve been very impressed with his film choices post-Twilight (besides Remember Me).
Interesting choice. Nice to see him branching out from the brooding romantic characters.
He’s making some interesting choices, I’ll give him that. I’ll be curious to see this. I loved Animal Kingdom.
Straight to VOD
how many times are you going to post hate on every website just because you are a fan of Stewart’s?
Some people just don’t like Pattinson’s acting. It has nothing to do with him as a person, Stewart, or disliking Twilight. Stop being so paranoid. That said, The Rover sounds very interesting and has some excellent people involved so good for Pattinson. Blacklist may have Jendersen, but it will be one of three war films coming out (Bigelow’s Bin Laden film and there is another film that will deal with Iraq circa 2004). Plus, a lot of pieces of the puzzle are still missing for Blacklist. The Rover appears like a more solid choice.
Busy casting week for Rob! Looking forward to Cosomopolis reactions from Cannes.
He seems to keep making interesting moves…
Your headline scared me half to death. For a moment I thought it said joins The River. Had such terrifying thoughts thinking that awful show was coming back.
Out of all the Twilight kids, he seems to be the only one taking his career seriously and doing anything worth reporting.
Your screen name is Iseeyourrobpatt? Hard to take you seriously. I don’t understand how some of you Twilight fans feel the need to trash the other stars of the films. While Lautner has the talent of a block of wood and will be in an Adam Sandler film, he also had a meeting with Gus Van Sant. Stewart’s SWATH will make bank this summer and she will be at Cannes for On the Road. Stewart and Pattinson will be just fine, Lautner may not but who knows.
The only reason why Gus Van Sant could make a movie with Taylor, is because Taylor owns rights of that movie, with his father.
So if Gus loves so much that project , he is forced to take even Taylor.
Who thinks something else … blissful innocence
No kidding, as Taylor Lautner has basically been written off. I get what the poster was saying though. It’s ridiculous to say that Pattinson is the only one of the Twilight actors who is taking his career seriously. Taylor was at least trying to do something interesting by meeting with Van Sant. Anna Kendrick and Kristen Stewart have both made some interesting, good choices. Kendrick worked with Redford in that Underground Weather film and Stewart with Salles.
Really now? Kristen has a movie premiering at Cannes in addition to SWATH being released June 1.. Box office predictions indicate SWATH is going to be huge. If you want to know why so many people end up not liking Rob it’s because of the people who act like he is god and does no wrong. You shove him down everyone’s throat and insult other actors in doing it.
Well I don’t think that is a reason not to like Rob. I am a fan of both and support both but I see Kristen’s fans who constantly diss Rob and Robs fans who diss Kristen. Fans are jealous that the one is going get ahead of the other or get more publicity. It’s all so petty and childish. I hope all the Twilight cast find success. I also think that Kristen and Rob support each other. They are both taking their careers seriously and are making some really good choices.
He’s been doing really well ever since twilight, I guess his acting skills have paid off..or should I say his looks?
Or could it be name recognition and a desire by producers to cash in on his Twilight association that is getting him parts? Because he has no acting skills that I can see, and his looks are the definition of ordinary.
Uhm no. It can’t be his Twilight fame because he’s not taking blockbusters and he’s not a given for the big money. See Remember Me and I doubt that Bel Ami will do amazing at the box office. He’s a risk because everyone seems to make their opinion based on Twilight. I think that he’s not at his best but he has talent. He was good in Water for Elephants. It’s his newest film and his best performance so far. In my opinion. I’m excited for Cosmopolis. It seems like same people stop seeing him just as Edward Cullen. Finally.
this script is so rad–yes, rad.
He has a lot of potential to have a great post Twilight career.
I like him. I hope he does well.
GREAT NEWS! Shows he put much thought in his choices, he is making his own mark in the industry.
If people took a little time in watching some of the interviews of this guy you would realize who he is. He is a smart and educated guy who actually knows a lot about film and other stuff. He is intelligent and well-mannered, overall just a really nice down to earth person.
But people only care to judge him from the exterior, from his “Twilight” image. It’s unfortunate because I think he is an actor who has a brilliant career ahead of him, except people keep putting him down for his appearance in these movies.
In contrast to most people, I am not surprised (along with the rest of Rob fans who know how he is) at all of the movies he is being cast in. This is who he really is, and not Edward Cullen. That was just a platform for success I think.
I don’t understand why people think Rob is a bad actor. I watched all the Twilight movies and he played Edward a certain way because he is a vampire after all. You can say you didn’t like the character but it had nothing to do with his acting. I just watched Remember Me and thought he did a great job. Totally different than Edward. I like him and I can’t wait to watch his movies as he gets older.
