Samuel Goldwyn Films acquired U.S. rights to the Stephen Gyllenhaal-directed Grassroots, a character-driven comedy about the power of the people and the virtues of standing up for what you believe in. Jason Biggs, Joel David Moore, Lauren Ambrose, Cobie Smulders, Tom Arnold, Christopher McDonald and Cedric The Entertainer star.
Gyllenhaal and Justin Rhodes wrote the script and Peggy Rajski, Michael Huffington, Matthew R. Brady, Brent Stiefel and Peggy Case produced with MRB Productions. Goldwyn has slated a June 22nd release.
Pic is set in pre-Twitter 2001, as a political unknown named Grant Cogswell (Moore) decides he must take down Seattle City Councilman Richard McIver (Cedric the Entertainer). Grant has only one dream, but it’s a big one: an elegant monorail gliding silently above the city’s wet streets, with only a tiny footprint — “like a kids’ lemonade stand!” – on the ground. He is apoplectic with rage over McIver’s mass transit proposal: a ground rail train he thinks will destroy lower-class neighborhoods, wreak environmental harm on the local salmon population, and destroy the city. Grant has no chance until he lures recently fired alternative-weekly reporter Phil Campbell (Biggs) to run his campaign, who recruits an army of young people to spread the word.

saw this when they were touring it around at different colleges. powerful charming movie that treads the political line very carefully (i.e. all my liberal friends loved it and me as the lone conservative also enjoyed).
This news came out about a month ago, actually. Through the film’s facebook page and Stephen Gyllenhall’s online presence. This film is firmly underwhelming in all it attempts to do. Though, I did see it during it’s early edits, but they can’t shoot THAT much supplemental footage in post, so I’ve got a feeling it will still be largely bland in the final cut.
Saw this movie on a college tour. I hope people go see it because it’s got a great message and theme. I was surprised at how well Biggs and Moore carried the movie. One of those movies that has great comedic moments amidst a compelling narrative.
I saw the film at an AFI showing – thought it was great. Entertaining but also very interesting – seeing what it takes to run a political campaign with no $$. The film also made me wonder why we don’t have monorails everywhere – it seems like a really great mode of transportation. Food for thought during an election year!
I saw this film at industry screening and people actually stood up afterwards and talked about how they wanted to run for local office and how the film inspired them to do so. It was really cool to see a movie where you leave the theater wanting to make a difference in your local community. I haven’t really felt this way after seeing a movie since Inconvenient Truth. This will be a great film for people that care.
Grassroots screened at Yale and there was an incredible discussion after the film. This was an inspiring film with a solid story and great acting all around. Major congratulations to Kathleen and Stephen for their success in finding distribution; this film is a gem!
Saw a pre-screening of this and really loved it. Unexpected and surprising in many moments. Great to see Jason Biggs in something deeper and more heartfelt than the American series
Great cast! Can’t wait to see Jason Biggs and Joel David Moore running a political campaign.
