Last night’s season finale of NBC’s Saturday Night Live featured an emotional send-off to key cast member Kristen Wiig, making her departure after seven season official (video below). There was no mention of the two other SNL cast members whose contracts are up and may be leaving, Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg. Last night’s SNL with host/musical guest Mick Jagger posted a 5.2/13 in the metered-market households. That was in line with the previous two weeks (5.2 for the show hosted by Eli Manning, 5.1 for the one hosted by Will Ferrell). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, SNL averaged a 2.7/12 in adults 18-49, down from the 3.1 rating for the last two telecasts with Ferrell and Manning. That means that the March 3rd show hosted by Lindsay Lohan (5.5/14, 3.3/15) remains SNL‘s highest-rated regular telecast this season.

Kristen’s send off was cool, and I thought Jagger was terrific with the material SNL has to offer.
And, that is the problem with SNL…more and more the material is far from satisfying.
I disagree. The cast is the problem. They do not have a star and people like Bobby Moynahan and certainly Keenan Thompson do not offer much. Sudekis is supposed to be the leading man but he’s more of a Scottie Pippen. I don’t think he was ever meant to carry the show as the leading male. I like Vanessa Bayer and Abby Elliot I think could be very good. Samberg is only funny in digital shorts, doesn’t always do well live. Seth Meyers time is up as lead writer I think as well.
They need a reboot.
Could not disagree more. First, Armisen is supposedly the lead I believe but that is likely irrelevant as for the most part those who have the most parts vary by week. I think Hader, Armisen, and Sudekis combine to offer a solid trio of wide ranging, hilarious, and committed male leads. Sandberg, Thompson, and Moynahan all chime in to provide solid depth and Killam is interesting in his roles. The female side I think is going to struggle significantly without Kristen. They have barely had anything substantial for years and there is no way Elliot and Padrad are going to carry the show. They MUST get lucky and hit gold in the coming year to overcome this obstacle or face serious cast issues. I LOVE the cast and in no way reminisce about the older day at this stage. The writing has been solid for a couple years, if not longer. They have a VERY solid show right now. When you look at the ratings, guests, and amount of media attention the past few years have garnered I think it is pretty hard to argue the opposite. Hopefully, they will manage another brilliant segue as they somehow pulled of when Fay left.
Honestly the only time people I know watched SNL for the first time in years was when Lohan hosted. The show just isn’t as good as it used to be
they’ve been saying that for like 40 years… lol… the show was always “used to be funny”…. makes me laugh when people write that…
This was a great episode. Jagger was great and the Wiig send-off was perfect.
His performances ROCKED. What is he, 80 now? Yet he showed he’s still got it. (after 50 years though, it’s not like he’s got anything to prove) Arcade Fire and the Foo Fighters helped of course, but he proved that he’s a matchless performer.
His sketches…meh. “The Californians” for instance was dreadful.
It was cool to see him riff on the past a little; take the sketch with him playing a banker. (When he was still Michael Jagger he attended college studying finance.) and the So You Think You Can Dance At An Outdoor Festival was hilarious. But as funny as it was to see him dressed like “the American Mick Jagger” aka Steven Tyler, he didn’t pull it off, sounding nothing like Tyler.
(You’d think after all those years living with Jerry Hall, he could more ably mimic the kind of Southern/N’awlins accent that Tyler has. And yes I know Tyler is from New England and no I don’t know how he learned to talk like Dr John.)
Actually, Tyler’s from Yonkers, NY.
I can’t explain why, but The Californians made me laugh. “Lazy Sunday 2″ was also a highlight.
Glad to see her go. I never found her funny. I always fast forward whenever a sketch featuring her came on. And Bridesmaids was awful.
What a hater.
Dill, to be fair , Kristin Wiig was over-used on SNL , and her characters were mostly annoying. But , I did respect Wiig’s performance in ” Bridesmaids”, even though Rose Byrne gave my favorite performance in that flick.
I’d tell you where to put your comment, but I’m guessing it’s way too tight to fit.
It would be great if people like Jonathan, who offer nothing to the world, were forced to take a picture of their surroundings when posting their meaningless negativity.
She brightened up that show week after week. She’s insanely talented.
you obviously have no sense of humor…
To get higher ratings they should’ve advertised it was Kristen’s last show. I think will see her pop up during SNL election shows. I don’t think she’ll eclipse her Bridesmaids numbers as a lead. Sudeikis is a second banana, he won’t get 3,000 screens as a lead. Andy Samberg should stay, other than a skit he’s high risk. His future is a Friday night show on the CW called The Andy Samberg experiment.
Wiig will crash and burn faster than Julia Sweeney in the movie biz
Uhh, wow. That was a crazy comment.
Give or take that Oscar nomination she already has.
Ybox, you are a moron. Wiig is already getting multi-million dollar feature offers, and is going to kill it opposite Ben Stiller in Walter Mitty.
Wiig is my all time favorite female snl cast member. She held her own against the boys and most of the time even upstaged them
I so agree with you! Wiig was and is amazing. Not sure why all of the negative comments. Maybe some of these guys with negative comments hate to see a woman be dominant in a man’s game?
Wiig isn’t “dominant.” I’d put Louis-Dreyfus, Fey and Poehler ahead of Wiig in terms of funny ladies. In that order.
& Gilda Radner ahead of all of them.
SO HAPPY WIGG IS GONE. She had a few moments in her 7 year run, but in my opinion is WAY over-rated. Someone needs to tell Wigg that Bridesmaids was a smash “in spite” of her awful character. If it was not for that awesome cast, the movie would have gone unnoticed.
She wrote it… I think she will be ok.
It’s ironic that Bridesmaids catapulted Melissa McCarthy to stardom and an Oscar nomination while nobody seems to care about Wiig, even though she wrote Bridesmaids and it was supposed to make her “the next big thing” in terms of female comedy. McCarthy is far more appealing (and funny IMO) anyway, but I don’t know what kind of career Wiig is going to have.
@Doc – Remember the SNL sketch where MM was harassing a male co-worker? That’s the most hilarious thing I have seen in YEARS. But her body size made it more comical because we love to laugh at “fat people” – if Wiig had done it, it would have been funny, but maybe not AS funny to some. Just my opinion, but that’s why I think MM is so easily embraced and Wiig hasn’t caught on to the same degree. I thought Wiig was the standout in Bridesmaids, not McCarthy, despite what the academy thought.
Most of the time I find Melissa McCarthy to be very obnoxious. She is like Chris Farley multiplied by three. Comedy that forced and over-the-top is not always funny. Plus, McCarthy didn’t deserve her Oscar nomination nor her Emmy win. To be fair , I did like Melissa in ” Gilmore Girls ” ( even though she was a nuance at times ) and the movie, ” Go .”
ohhh you liked her in gilmore girls…that explains why you didn’t think she was funny in bridesmaids…you have a skewed perception of what funny is!
Andy Samburg mentioned it was hinted towards it being his last episode in the lyrics to the Lazy Sunday 2 short.
Watch Lazy Sunday II – Andy Samberg also says goodbye if you pay attention to the end.
SNL is bigger than any one star, but Wiig will be missed. Strong female personality (not counting Tina Fey on the news) has been missing since Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon left.
Wiig had irritating annoying characters on SNL, but she’s likable and a good actress (although I wasn’t fond of Bridesmaids). Honestly, her departure was overdue and I suspect she’ll land on her feet.
Jason Sudeikis is gone too. You can see it in his face here.
Hey Wiig haters – what exactly is left that is so funny. It’s ironic that the pictures shown are of the other female cast bidding her adieu – like they think that now that Wiig is gone they can shine. Abby Elliott has been there four years and I couldn’t pick her out of a lineup. If Michaels is smart, he’ll clean house on most of the remaining cast (especially the women) and start over.
Nothing’s left that’s really funny, you’re right. Doesn’t make Wiig funny either though. She played the same shrill, one-note “characters” for years and I also found her more appealing in films than on SNL.
Frankly I think SNL has been at or near the bottom for a long while. Does anyone, anywhere think Keanan Thompson is funny?
I love Keenan, he is so funny in “whats up with that” and the “scared straight” bits.
Lorne, and that’s about it.
Keenan Thompson is hysterical.
The line-up line was great! And true…
“Abby Elliott has been there four years and I couldn’t pick her out of a lineup.”
Maybe that’s because Wiig was on EVERY damn segment! I would personally love to see what the rest of the female cast can do now that giant annoying wet rag that is Wiig won’t be dragging each skit down with variations of the same annoying unfunny character.
I am deeply disturbed by the fact that SNL is still on TV.
Love her. Kristen is making the right move. She’ll do just fine.
I personally think Kristen Wiig IS the only talented sketch player on SNL…except for maybe the girl that plays Miley Cyrus AND I dont even know her name…I agree Lorne needs to clean house and get some new talent…male and female…but for sure SNL isnt what it used to be in the Belusi, Murphy days!
Bev Hahs , what ! I don’t agree. Bill Hader is brilliant , and Taran Killam is coming strong.
I know that Deadline is the go to website for industry heavyweights and the comments on this thread prove the larger problem with Hollywood – a bunch of old, out of touch people who have no grasp of what is funny. People love to complain that SNL hasn’t been good since “insert whatever era you grew up in”. Give me a break. The cast is stronger now than it has been in ages. Bill Hader is an absolute genius, Bobby Moynihan is great, Tallen is a great new addition, Abby Elliot, Kenan has his moments, and Kristin will be terribly missed, she’s a once in a blue moon talent. John Mulaney and some of the other staff writers are at the top of their game, it’s just that most of you are too old to get it. Kudos to Lorne for staying current and relevant way after his expiration date.
They read DHD, but I don’t think “industry heavyweights” take time to comment as much as other people working in the industry who have a lot more time on their hands to hate and bitch on whoever the post happens to be about. Also, the day drudge started linking up here, the quality of the comments has suffered.
Catrina’s comment is one of the smartest I’ve seen on DLH. Cool chick…
@Doc Kristen Wiig received an Oscar Nomination for her script. She has an amazing future ahead of her!
And how is this show still on the air? This show has been unfunny for almost 10 years now and yet NBC and Lorne Michaels keeps dragging it along. Best wishes to Miss Wiig in her future endeavors.
Why do I read the comments on this site? Why am I writing one right now?
What is life?
the answer to all three is “suffering”
What a heartfelt sendoff – I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it before on SNL. Regardless of what you think of Kristen as a performer, she must be a hell of a person to warrant a display of affection like that.
God, enough of you whiners crying about why SNL is still on the air. Here’s your answer: THERE’S NOTHING TO REPLACE IT.
Same as Letterman on CBS. Their late-night was nothing but reruns before Dave, and there is nothing/no one to replace him. Ferguson at 11:35 EST? Keep dreaming.
PS: People have been saying SNL isn’t funny since ’80 (Eddie Murphy notwithstanding) so your complaining is nothing new.
Shut up.
I’m going to miss Kristen Wiig, my favorite SNL cast member. Her impersonations were hilarious. She’s fearless and extremely talented.
