I don’t want to go overboard on American Idol predictions. But after reporting yesterday that online betting sites overwhelmingly see Phillip Phillips coming in first, I feel duty-bound to note that a firm that analyzes social media and Twitter traffic says today that Jessica Sanchez “is the safest pick to win.” From May 18-20, the 16-year-old averaged 61,489 daily mentions vs 38,372 for Phillips, according to General Sentiment. What’s more, it says, “Fans lauded Sanchez’s singing voice, while recent reports of Phillips’ kidney problems caused some concern.” Last year the firm correctly picked Scotty McCreery to win, but in 2010 it wrongly forecast that Crystal Bowersox would beat Lee DeWyze. The firm looked at the brands followed by 577,833 people who also follow Idol’s official Twitter handle. Disney, Starbucks, ESPN, Pixar, and Fox News led the list. Although Coca-Cola is one of Idol’s most ubiquitous sponsors, Pepsi had more overlaps with the show’s Twitter followers.

Social media has no bearing on american idol — otherwise Colton Dixon would still be in the running who at the time of his elimination had the most twitter followers and Facebook fans. Also, Joshua would not have made it number 3 — as he had one of the lowest of both, same with skylar and Hollie.
If this honestly was a competition about singing, there would be no question that it should be Jessica Sanchez as the next american idol.
American Idol is not just about singing; it is about finding an ENTERTAINER who can sing. Unfortunately, although Jessica can sort of sing, she is far from entertaining. She’s irrelevant to most people on a musical basis and has no idea who she is as a performer. She proved that in spades last night when she sang her “Idol Song.” She bombed. Whitney or Celine (who Jessica would like to think she is) would have KILLED that song. Jessica didn’t know what to do with it because she had nobody to copy.
If she wins, she’s going to fade into the same c-lister oblivion that most of the other Idol winners (Reuben WHO? Jordin WHO?) have enjoyed.
Jessica is in the TOP 2 because of her amazing talent and personality even at a very young age. A legion of faithful fans saw in her enough who are willing to vote hard in order that she could continue inspiring and touching peoples’ hearts thru her beautiful songs.
So at the of the day, its how hard the fans would vote hard numbers and Jessica fans have proven that.
Jessica Wins!!!!
never say never. all she needs is the right song. as long as AI doesn’t feed her crap like last nights performance, she will be here a long time. she may fade, but all it takes is a spark. plus she is more marketable globally like leona lewis.
“Entertainment” is in the eye of the beholder. The only entertainment relayed through a CD is the singer’s voice. How much will anyone really enjoy listening to Phillip on a CD? If he wins he’ll join the club of other AI ‘entertainers’ who went on to bomb in the real world, i.e., Taylor Hicks, Lee DeWyze and Chris Allen. Jessica will have a very successful career even if she doesn’t win.
not so…phillip phillips happens to sing music that i enjoy…i put him in the category of jack johnson or jason mraz…his albums will sell. period.
Are you a freaking idiot. She can sort of sing. Do you need a hearing aid. I also like Phillips but lets don’t be rediculous.
It’s not just about singing or social media, it’s also about being palatable to the largest number of people and peaking at the right time. Look at Adam and Kris. Adam is a great singer, but he was a polarizing contestant — not just because of his sexuality but because of his voice and performances. He had the most passionate fans, but not the broadest fanbase. Kris also peaked at exactly the right time.
I see similarities with Jessica and Phillip. Phillip’s performances the past three weeks have reached a new level whereas most of Jessica’s best moments have been evenly interspersed and the last two weeks Phillip sort of bested her, even though I’m not a fan of Phillip, siiiigh.
All the young girls will vote for Philip. That will give him the edge.
IDK how many young girls you know, but they aren’t into the Dave Matthews Band or Phillip’s sound. If it was really young girls propelling these guys to the final win, then Colton Dixon would be in the final. My sister is 14 and she hates American Idol and none of her school friends watch it. It’s my mom who votes for Phillip.
Do not disregard Proven “GIRL POWER” of Jessica’s Legion of Fans!
I don’t think that social media is a good indicator of voting. One reason is she has alot of support from the phillipines and they can not vote. But I still would’nt be suprised if she wins. It is a toss up. I think the fact that Phillip was put up against the losing contestant for the las two elimination gives the perception that he was next to last but this is not the case. They do alot of this for drama I think. I would like to see the votes ratios being shared at elimination time. This would be a good indicator of what is really happening.
even if joshua was in the finale, he will likely lose to P2.
Sure the people in the Philippines can vote. They can vote through Facebook or on line. And god knows they probably are doing so.
Yes, anybody from every corner of this world can vote as long as there is an Internet access. I do not see anything wrong with this…Are you guys not happy that America will be generating bucks from other countries out of this show?..Just to remind you , Ai producers aren’t American. They are from the UK.
Wow, predicting that the cute white guy will win. That takes guts!!!
yes, just like the year Ruben won!!
Well if the cute GUY does not win that will be the 3rd time the state of GEORGIA comes in 2nd.
I agree totally about Jessica should win,she has an amazing voice & im waiting to buy her music hopefully soon xo : )
Voters otside U.S. can vote online but have limit-5O. From what I hear they can skype Limit on votes, technical difficulties, lower pop. of voters w/ internet access would indicate, to me, not in Jessica’s favor. Since they can’t vote like we do they use social media to aggressively “campaign” for their fave. If Jessica wins it will be from guess work not based on credible theory.
The young lady stole my heart with the prayer. I would love to see her hook up with a song writer like Kandi Burris who understands her style and knows the ins and outs of urban music and style. This would be a wonderful collaboration. She could go to the top of the charts with this grammy winning song writer.
I love “The Prayer.” Too bad Jessica ruined it with her exaggerated vibrato and lack of audience connection. Usually when I hear that song, it brings tears to my eyes. This time it just made me cry. Jessica would like to think she’s Celine Dion, but she’s got a long, long way to go. She needs to concentrate on being Jessica, whoever that is.
I find it kind of strange, that the one America voted off, is now predicted to win. She’s still the same as she was when she was voted off. Using FB and Twitter has a prediction tool makes no sense, as not everyone talking about her is eligible to vote.
What is so strange about Jessica winning (if the predictions are correct). it only mean one thing, she got a lot of fans and P2 has no monopoly on all the votes. That is why from the day she was first eliminated the judges has been harping on “vote for your favorite”, it may not be your brand of music (that is your choice). now respect the decision of the majority.
Anyway, Jessica, P2 and even Joshua are already champions. I do believe even if Joshua was in the final 2, P2 will probably be on top. between J and J, Jessica will be based on the SMI.
I’ve watched American Idol every year since it started. Don’t be fooled by the judges saying it’s a “singing” competition. If it was Jessica would win hands down. It’s a popularity contest and the girls think P2 is cute so, unfortunately, cuteness will probably win.
Someone wake up please!! Jessica should come in 2nd, why? because she is 16 yrs old and must have ADULT SUPERVISION. Come on, the American Idol is so much more than just a singer, they have to entertain as well. PHILLIP PHILLIPS is a songwriter, musician, singer and he knows who he is!!!! Jessica has no style of her own, she copies other artists, she doesn’t write music, she doesn’t entertain us, she’s not a musician. Come on, somebody wake up please before its to late. Its not just the fans votes that count. Jessica is 16 yrs old. I think Idol should set a min. age of 18 for many legalities. Think about it.
Unfortunately Phillip Phillips thinks he’s a tone deaf Dave Matthews.
I guess working in a pawn shop you get used to selling other peoples stuff.
Jessica, for me is the most talented of all. I felt it unfair when Philip sang the last song with all the harmony (which carried him) and music. The song “home” was good. They stuck Jessica with a bad song with nothing but her beautiful voice to make it the best she could…I don’t think she will win, but I’d LOVE her to!!! She will do well no matter…
I seriously haven’t got a clue who will win this year.
Jessica Sanchez is truly the better singer but I must admit that I find her completely boring and lackluster. She is a sixteen year old girl singing Whitney and Celine… shouldn’t she be doing something more her age? Something that would get her on the charts with the young crowd? I can honestly say that I would NEVER buy her album and sadly, when she has attempted to perform songs that are a bit more ‘lively’, she has not done well at all.
So Phillip is not the best singer, but he is entertaining and unique. He knows who he is and I can absolutely hear him on the radio… right now.
If America is looking for a true entertainer and not just a voice then I believe that Phillip should win. As far as I’m concerned he is the one who would go further and would certainly have my vote if I were a U.S. citizen.
The last 4 years the winner has been basically the same type of person singing the same kind of music. However, the previous winners are much more talented and better looking.
Um yeah they were all white, have a guitar and male, WGWG…but Scotty sings country, David Cook sings pop rock. The most comparable are Lee Dewyze and Kris Allen, who sing singer-songwriter type music. Out of all those I only liked Cook’s music. Philip is okay, and he has his own style in comparison to all those…but yeah they all played guitar and are male and white..That is about it.
Yes…they both are talented and both will have recording careers if they want one. But I’m sorry, I could listen to Jessica for hours…much better voice and appleal. I couldn’t listen to Phillip for hours with his voice and no melody. So is Idol to find an undiscovered voice or its it a competition for entertainers?
That being said, I think Idol is to find the Jessica’s of the world and I hope she wins!
I couldn’t agree with you more! Philip bores me to sleep! I would never be able to sit through a concert of his and every song he sings sounds the same! He never ever gave me “goosies” once throughout the competition whereas, Jessica never failed to awe me with her renditions of songs performed by the world’s greatest artists. Jessica, all of 16 years old, performed with grace and elegance and what a powerhouse of a voice coming from that wee body of hers. I am willing to bet that Jessica will have way more success than Philip will have. Once again, just like the last 5 years, American Idol, fails to produce a commercially successful star. Mediocrity is what comes out of these winning American Idols. If they are soooooo great and soooo loved by the voters, then why are their albums not selling??? Stars like, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks, all past American Idol winners have gone on to achieve commercial success. Ratings are down for AI because the public realizes that it no longer is a singing competition but a fiasco for “who is the cutest guy”! AND, the judges were totally unfair to Jessica on the last evening of her performance. No standing ovation for her first performance was a true insult!!! AND yet they did not hesitate to give Philip his when he sang his last song! Anyway, Jessica will not let us down! She will rise to the top of the heap. Philip is total mediocrity. There are plenty of Philips around.
I absolutely agree. The trend is clear. Every winner for the last five years has been the guy who is white, sings/write songs and plays a guitar – WHETHER HE IS BORING OR NOT – e.g. Lee DeWyze, Kris Allen. Scotty found a way to to turn every single song into a country song (yawn). They should find a way to do somrthing about this trend because oftentimes the winner bombs.
Last night’s show was one of the most boring AI finales i have seen. It would have been a completely different show had Joshua been there (sigh).

American Idol should be called American Cutie! No longer is it about singing! I truly believe that when it comes down to the final two contestants, both artists should be singing the exact same song! Then, the public will truly see who really is the better singer! Philip was given the best song and I believe that if Jessica sang that same song and with all that bravado that went along with it, she would have “killed” it with her falsetos, etc… Jessica Sanchez, you are the Idol of the world at this moment!
I would hang on Jessica’s every note, whereas Phillip was not only totally boring but strange.I really hope I never have to see nor hear him again..Jessica should have won,it is unfair she had lost.
