George Lucas wants to make “experimental” movies, not blockbusters anymore. The Star Wars and Indiana Jones creator told UK publication Empire Magazine that “I’m moving away from all my businesses, I’m finishing all my obligations and I’m going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theatres.”
This retreat from Lucasfilm and possible blockbuster sequels like a fifth Indiana Jones flick follows on statements the filmmaker made earlier this year: In January, Lucas told the New York Times Magazine that “I’m retiring. I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff.” At the time, the 68-year-old filmmaker, who started out with more experimental films like 1971’s THX 1138, was awaiting the release of Red Tails, his self-financed biopic of the WWII-era Tuskegee Airman. The movie, estimated to have cost about $58 million, has brought in around $50 million domestically since its January 20 opening. Starting with the release of Episode IV: A New Hope in 1977, Lucas’ Star Wars franchise is estimated to have made about $4.5 billion in box office, making it the third most successful movie series ever behind Harry Potter and the James Bond movies.

Just go away George… Sorry I mean release the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy on Blu-ray then go away
Why even do that? Polishing a turd.
He should turn Star Wars over to the crew making The Clone Wars TV series, which is pretty good despite the necessity of being pitched to children. They could go a great job on a series for grownups.
Lucas doesn’t seem like the type who’s going to make any interesting experimental movies. He can’t even do mass-market schlock very well. But maybe he’ll surprise us.
“Lucas doesn’t seem like the type who’s going to make any interesting experimental movies. ”
He started off doing experimental film. THX-1138 is pretty cool (if dated).
It was a collaboraton he did with others, and when you remove all the talented people from the equation and add in nothing but “yes” men you get crap like the prequels.
This!
A couple months ago he was pissed his neighbors wouldn’t let him build a movie studio. He didn’t need that for hobby films. But THX1138 was better than anything he’s done since Return of the Jedi
He’s been saying the same thing since 1977 — that he just wants to go away and make experimental films. The guy is the most successful independent filmmaker of all time. I don’t even think he knows how to make experimental films.
If he really wants to retire, then allow some other directors to make Star Wars films. Let Michael Bay, Robert Rodriguez, Frank Miller, Peter Jackson, etc., at the Star Wars universe. I’m sure Fox will provide the money. Lucas can still maintain control and get a big cut of the profits. Fans want some kick-ass SW films! Spielberg always talked of directing one! Why not have an annual dose of Star Wars?
Michael Bay? Robert Rodriguez? Frank Miller? What are you talking about? No, no, and no. Maybe Peter Jackson. I really like Spielberg, but I wouldn’t want him to direct it either.
I’d say Christopher Nolan is my top choice. But also Gore Verbinski or David Yates or perhaps even Jon Favreau. I’d also say J.J., but some people would be upset by that.
Why? He did well with Star Trek and Super 8. He’s no stranger to Sci-Fi and has proven himself.
Oh…do you mean Star >WARSTREK<? Oh…I get it now.
Nolan? Seriously? The guy SUCKS as a director. Did you SEE Inception? Dark Knight? Please.
So you live on an island in the middle of nowhere by yourself, right?
I think joe’s the same guy who said the Nolan films aren’t really Batman. Riiight.
How dare you say Michael Bay who would ruin anything Star Wars related and make every scene have a slow motion effect and really hot dumb girls for the female roles.
And Frank Miller?? He is everything that the Star Wars universe would find evil and part of the Dark Side. Do you not here his political beliefs?
I agree with the poster a few posts above let the Clone Wars team take it over, it would make a wonderful new series of films.
Agree totally with Miss Manager, anyone that would equate Michael Bay with good films is a clone of a misguided person themselves.
George Lucas is a lot like Orson Wells. Starts his career by making one of the most influential movies of all time. Ends it with being “that guy in the wine commercials.”
Except Lucas is a billionaire and Welles slept on Peter Bogdanovich’s couch.
Welles was a brilliant man, but incredibly self-destructive; despite his early success, he could not handle money to save his life. Lucas is at the very least a shrewd businessman.
Too late for sorrys George.
I almost feel sorry for him.
I look forward to his amazing Youtube channel.
Good. THX 1138 was a great film and was experimental. Lucas is a great film-maker, without whom, the face of cinema would be completely different than it is today. I’m glad to hear that he’s going out on a limb.
Best news I’ve heard all day.
Yeah, release the original versions, then go away. You lost us.
I respect him for not pandering to a bunch of fanboys with a overblown sense of entitlement ^
Yes! How dare we ask for the cut of the films we saw in theaters and enjoyed. BLASPHEMY!
If Ridley Scott can release all the different cuts of BLADE RUNNER, if Spielberg can learn from his mistake from tampering a classic and release E.T. on blu-ray this year with the original cut, no added CGI and shotguns, then Lucas can surely do the same, especially with the fortune he’s made.
He wants it a certain way, that’s fine he made it. When you think up your own Star Wars and put all the blood sweat and tears into making it you can have it the way you like it.
Someone buys a BMW. They love it. It has wheels. Then someone removes those wheels. The BMW owner complains. Then someone like you tells him to build his own car.
Sounds absurd, doesn’t it?
It is.
No offense, but that is probably the worst analogy I have ever seen.
No problem Greg, tell him to give me back all the money I spent on the original triology and I will never say another word to him again. But he is using OUR money to do this.
He’s been saying this for… ten years now? I’ll believe it when I see his name on something other than a 3D re-release of WILLOW.
Of course with the amount of money he has, his garage is probably bigger then lots of small film studios and better equipped.
Have you all forgotten American Graffiti? A masterpiece!
Let Joss Whedon direct a Star Wars trilogy.
ughhh no thanks.
Go ahead, folks. Kill your God.
And then they pulled back the curtain, and to thier disgust the great and powerful OZ was nothing but a side show barker, and not a god at all…..
Personally, I think that Lucas should get together with Robert Duvall and make a sequel/follow-up to THX-1138. Maybe as a short film. Maybe even shoot it on 16mm, and do digital post if the story needs it.
Done on the cheap or done expensive, I’m sure that a really interesting story might be in there waiting there to be told.
George Lucas is a visionary NOT a filmmaker. He needs to create the idea then step back and let a real filmmaker take over.
This guy is a genius but he can not direct or write to save his life.
These comments, in general, are just pathetic. George Lucas created some of the greatest movies of all time. For indie to helping invent the modern blockbuster.
Were there misfires? Yeah? Big ones? Yeah.
But this man gave us Star Wars. Indiana Jones. American Graffiti… and a whole slew of brilliance that anyone would be lucky to create one of in 100 lifetimes.
How about all those years Michael Jordan DIDN’T win the title? Wow, he must suck. We should tar and feather him.
How about the photos Ansel Adams took that were slightly out of focus? We should just burn all his photos, as that makes him just a hack.
Honestly… is it the internet that just brings out the worst in people? The anonymity? Jealousy? Entitlement? I don’t even feel angry at these posters. Just sad.
If only we could live in a world with perfect artists who never pushed themselves and never made mistakes. Then we’d all be happy.
Amen.
Awesome post!
Except your delusion of reality is getting in the way of FACT.
George Lucas didnt give us these great films ALONE. His wife, Leigh Bracket, Lawerence Kasden, Ralph MCQuarrie, Irvin Kirshner, John Williams, Phil Tippett, and the list goes on. These people MADE the movies, Lucas ran around getting the money and posturing on TV.
When Lucas drove away and alienated all the outspoken talented people who started with him we ended up with the Prequels and the current Indiana Jones films.
Sadly his “experimental” films will be something like “What’s Eating Jar-Jar Binks”
Star Wars is George’s toy to break and rebuild as many times as he likes.
I will always be grateful for the original star wars trilogy and Mr Lucas as it got me into darwing and painting and now I;m a concept artist wprking n the industry. I think he deserves respect for goving us the original trilogy.
With that said though I would love to see someone Like Joss Whedon handle a new Star wars film based on the exploits of Luke, Leia and Han played by new actors obviously. A bit what JJ did with star Trek accept that its sequel or picks off where return of the Jedi left off.
Whedon is red hot after avengers! but now that I think about it he woul probably decline and do Firefly..which would be fine too.
The George Lucas who made STAR WARS, GRAFFITI and the first 3 INDY movies died in the ’80s. This corporate shill, this sack of hack who made those last three “Star Wars” toy commercials, is all that’s left. And can we stop ca;lling him a “Visionary” and shrewd Businessman? Lest we forget, he gave away Pixar!
All he wants is sales thats why they push that mans product by not retiring…he isnt a commodity by saying he is what he has for mass audiences becomes most notable again and again…its a wage earner trick..
Good for him. It must be hard to relate to the mob when your not trying to make money or get laid. He should make movies for himself and let people enjoy them decades from now.
