The CW had been open to launching as many as six new drama series next season and it may still do it. The network picked up five pilots to series and the one that just missed the cut, The Selection, remains in serious contention. I hear CW brass are planning to sit down with the producers of the project next week to discuss its redeveloping. Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, who wrote the adaptation of Kiera Cass’ novels, are expected to remain on board but instead of staying close to the source material as they did this season, they will likely use the books more of a jumping-off point the second time around. The cast is expected to change, but the CW and The Selection studio Warner Bros TV are looking to keep the lead – Friday Night Lights‘ Aimee Teegarden — who got high marks. The project is being put on a fast track and, if it comes together, could join the CW’s schedule in midseason. “I truly believe that there is a series in The Selection,” CW president Mark Pedowitz said after the network’s upfront presentation today.

As part of Pedowitz’s efforts to re-introduce comedy series on the network, the CW developed several half-hour scripts. None of them was picked up to pilot — Pedowitz explained the decision with the need to stabilize the schedule, which is done easier with hourlong series. Now that he feels the lineup is in good shape, Pedowitz said he will focus attention on comedies. Of the half-hour scripts that the CW developed this past cycle, two remain in contention: an adaptation of the 2009 British comedy FM starring pre-Bridesmaids Chris O’Dowd, about two radio DJs and their producers; and the Ben McMillan- and Josh Greenbaum-written and Craig Zadan- and Neil Meron-produced Swordfighting, about two young couples. While one of the scripts is written as a single-camera and one as multi-, both may be done as single-camera as the CW will likely re-introduce scripted comedy to its drama-heavy lineup with single-camera shows. Like The Selection, the two comedy projects could be piloted off cycle and launch later in the season.
After the CW upfront presentation, Pedowitz also addressed the network’s plan for an October fall launch. He said that the network’s fall lineup will roll out from October 1-10. He said that with the network’s previous strategy of starting early, their shows would open well and then when the broadcast premiere week hits with several dozen series/season premieres, they would “lose traction.” By launching after the new shows on the other broadcast networks had already been sampled for two weeks, he hopes the CW shows won’t lose momentum and will also be able to air originals uninterrupted through December. The CW’s first-ever summer schedule will run through September for a seamless transition.

While I hear 11 episodes is the target for the final season of Gossip Girl, Pedowitz said that talks with studio Warner Bros. TV are ongoing and the final number would likely be between 10-12 episodes. He stressed that the upcoming eighth season of Supernatural is absolutely not envisioned to be the show’s final. He said that the move of Nikita from 8 PM to 9 PM on Friday, where it is facing NBC’s Grimm and Fox’s Fringe, was made to give its affiliates a better news lead-in as Nikita is a broader, older-skewing show. He also noted that its series adaptation of Deadman is not dead and he is proud of having Ringer on the air. It was a “complicated serial show” that was also hurt by a long midseason hiatus, leading to its cancellation but its star Sarah Michelle Gellar “is coming back to this network as a producer or as an actress,” Pedowitz said.
Pedowitz was the latest network topper to express frustration over Dish’s proposed Auto Hop feature, which automatically erases commercials from shows, saying it will “bite the hand that supplies the content” and indicating that the satcaster should “pay suppliers for all ad revenue they are losing.”

Would they keep Ethan Peck in The Selection? I really like him!
They should try to get “The Manzanis” from ABC. It’s a perfect sitcom for them. Btw, I still do not forgive them canceling “Ringer”. They should have given it at least 13 episodes!
The CW is a business, and sometimes it has to make business decisions. It was a good show and Pedowitz loved it, but a heavy serial drama like that needs to air without breaks, really.
I think they are okay without your forgiveness for canceling the lowest rated network show on TV.
Ringer was horrible. On most networks something of such awful quality would have aired two episodes, not 22.
PLEASE don’t recast Ethan Peck or William Moseley. They are NOT the problem.
If they’re recasting, I’m hoping they keep Ethan Peck.
I second this! William Moseley and Ethan Peck would not be the problem! And this is one viewer the CW will lose if they drop either of them. I wasn’t even going to watch it until I heard those names involved with the project. I’ve mostly had my fill of teeny-bopper TV, but I would never pass up William or the grandson of dreamy (in his day) Gregory Peck.
Besides, William’s projects keep getting dropped. He deserves to go on from Chronicles on Narnia. He’s a great actor, and loves to do his own stunts. Give the guy a shot, CW, and you won’t be disappointed!
Ditto! I think Teegarden should be recasted here. Her performances were somehow underwhelming and she seems to be miscast.
I don’t mind William Moseley on TV but I think he should be on British shows on BBC/Channel 4/ITV (perhaps a guest star in Downton?).
From what I heard from TV writers/critics was that “The Selection” was absolutely terrible. Everything went wrong.
The CW moving into comedies is overdue, glad to see it happening.
I wish people would stop suggesting they pick up non-Warner/CBS shows, though. Not going to happen.
what about picking up that cbs single cam comedy? it had a young skewwing vibe
I agree they should pick up oh fuck its you and super fun night.
Recast whoever the heck you want, just bring The Selection to life! Although… the lead prince guy should be someone who has chemistry with Aimee Teegarden, of course.
Just give the midseason slot to The secret circle and call it a day.
Totally! I’m so upset they ended The Secret Circle. If they won’t renew it, I really hope another network like ABC Family or MTV would consider picking it up for Season 2. It ended with some amazing possibilities that would have created a fantastic second season.
MTV would be an awesome choice to pick up “The Secret Circle”! Good call.
Agree!! This was their highest rated show last season! Why they cancelled it is beyond me! I hope someone else picks it up as well- I thought of ABC family also, but MTV would be good too.
Can’t wait for FM to hit the States! Chris O’Dowd is crazy funny in the UK version and loved the bands as guest stars each week. Very cool, CW.
I hope that this happens. I was intrigued by The Selection, and I’ve been wanting The CW to move towards comedy for a long time. First Cut seems to have a comedic sensibility to it, so hopefully all goes well.
The problem with The Selection was that the show demanded a higher production value than what it got. The pilot could have used better scope and production design. To introduce this futuristic setting and fresh concept to an audience requires some visual effects – not just some stock footage. William Moseley, Ethan Peck, Leonor Varela and Sean Patrick Thomas all deliver solid performances… Best bet is for them to re-write, reshoot, (maybe minimal recasting), then believe in this potential reboot enough to get it on-air.
So who were the actors who are likely to get recast?
I would love to see The Selection, I love the book, its a good story line.
They’re finally starting to make strides and sense here versus the tumultuous years under Ostroff’s reign of terror there but Mark has to remain focused on less repeats, more credible shows, very less reality shows and attracting broader audiences if he and the CW ever expect to be taken seriously after years of disappointment.
I kind of like their drama flow during the week. Why don’t they just reopen Sunday and have a four comedy block there? Besides animation, the nets have no Sunday comedy (unless you count Donald Trump… I’ll be here all night).
They should just move Top Model to summer with their reality wheel.
I’d love to see Ethan Peck get more work, but maybe something different than playing The Prince in this show…Even if he doesn’t get recasted, the show will probably get cancelled after a season.
Hopefully not the charactor of Mylan played by Steve Bacic
The reason I even knew about this show was because I heard that William Mosely was going to be in it and I’d love to see him something apart from Narnia his movie he was supposed to make with Emma Roberts in 2010 never got made
I’d like to see The Selection make it on the air. I was intrigued by the first book and would like to see it further developed into a television show!
Recasting William and Ethan would be SUCH a mistake, as would using the books as a “jumping off point”. They need to at least TRY to stick with some source material, or it’s not the same story anymore.
The Selection would be the best thing they could possibly add to the lineup.
really? i think i may be the only one who wants ethan peck out.I think a better actor could play maxon for sure and ethan doesn’t have any special quality to make me love him you know? like how everyone loves damon on vampire diaries? i don;t see that with ethan but if they recast him with someone like max irons i thinnk alot of people would take more interest
