The CW is adding five new drama series for 50 extra original hours to its 2012-13 primetime schedule. The network has always tried to avoid the mayhem of broadcast premiere week in late September, but that has mostly included premiering shows earlier, something that contributed to the network’s woes of having to air long stretches of repeats during the season. This time, in what network president Mark Pedowitz calls a “transformative season” for the CW, the network will “strategically” roll out its fall lineup in early October. It hopes to keep the lights on until then with the CW’s first-ever summer schedule featuring a slew of originals.

The CW is introducing three of its five new dramas – Arrow, Beauty And The Beast and Emily Owens, MD (formerly First Cut) — in the fall. The other two – Cult, which always was envisioned to have cable-type shorter seasons, and The Carrie Diaries — are joining in midseason.
The CW is making a lot of scheduling moves. After two seasons on Friday, most recently pitted against similarly male-skewing sci-fi-tinged Fringe and Grimm, Supernatural is moving to Wednesday paired with new drama Arrow. Supernatural has performed best when airing behind the Smallville, so putting it behind another series based on a DC character seems promising for the sci-fi veteran, which has not had a suitable, male-appeal companion since the departure of Smallville.
After eight seasons on Wednesday going back to its days on UPN, veteran reality series America’s Next Top Model is moving to Friday. That also appears logical given the franchise’s ratings erosion this season. Top Model is paired with Nikita, which is getting the lead-in support it was lacking this season.
Reuniting on Mondays are 90210 and Gossip Girl in its final 11-season season. It will be succeed in midseason by The Carrie Diaries. Hart Of Dixie, which launched behind Gossip Girl this season, is taking over 90210‘s Tuesday 8 PM anchor position, paired with another medical drama with a female lead, newbie Emily Owens, MD.

Descriptions of CW’s new series:
“EMILY OWENS, M.D.”
At long last, Emily Owens feels like she is an actual grown-up. She can finally put her high school days as the geeky-girl-with-flop-sweats behind her; she’s graduated from medical school and is now a first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, where she’ll have the chance to work with world-famous cardiologist Dr. Gina Beckett – and where, not-so-coincidentally, her med-school crush Will Rider is also an intern. So why does everyone keep warning her that the hospital is just like high school? Emily soon finds out the hard way – her high school nemesis, the gorgeous, popular Cassandra Kopelson, is also just starting out at Denver Memorial, and it seems like they’re rivals all over again – not only as surgical interns, but for Will’s attention. Fellow intern Tyra Granger warns Emily that the cliques at Denver Memorial are all too familiar: the jocks have become orthopedic surgeons; the mean girls are in plastics; the rebels are in the ER, and Tyra has her own awkward place as the principal’s kid – her father is the chief resident. Emily’s the new kid all over again, and it’s just as awkward as high school. Only this time around, Emily will have to balance the personal and emotional turmoil of social politics with the high-stakes world of life-and-death medical decisions. At least she has fellow intern Tyra and nerdy-but-cute resident Micah, to count on as friends. Emily is growing to realize that although she may be a geek, she may also grow to be a great doctor, flop sweats and all. The series stars Mamie Gummer as Emily, Justin Hartley as Will, Michael Rady as Micah, Aja Naomi King as Cassandra, Kelly McCreary as Tyra and Necar Zadegan as Gina. EMILY OWENS, M.D. is from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television with executive producers Jennie Snyder Urman (“90210,” “Lipstick Jungle”), Dan Jinks (“Pushing Daisies,” “Milk”) and Bharat Nalluri (“Tsunami”). The pilot was directed by Bharat Nalluri.
“ARROW”
After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine. The series stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance. Based on characters appearing in comic books and graphic novels published by DC Comics, ARROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Green Lantern,” “Brothers & Sisters”), Marc Guggenheim (“FlashForward,” “Eli Stone”), Andrew Kreisberg (“Warehouse 13,” “The Vampire Diaries”) and David Nutter (“Smallville,” “Supernatural,” “Game of Thrones”). Melissa Kellner Berman (“Eli Stone,” “Dirty Sexy Money”) is co-executive producer. The pilot was directed by David Nutter from a teleplay by Andrew Kreisberg & Marc Guggenheim, story by Greg Berlanti & Marc Guggenheim.
“BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”
Detective Catherine Chandler is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective. Several years earlier, Catherine witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen. Catherine would have been killed too, but someone – or something – saved her. No one has ever believed her, but she knows it wasn’t an animal that attacked the assassins…it was human. Years have passed, and Catherine is a strong, confident, capable police officer, working alongside her equally talented partner, Tess. While investigating a murder, Catherine discovers a clue that leads her to a handsome doctor named Vincent Keller, who was reportedly killed by enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Catherine learns that Vincent is actually still alive and that it was he who saved her many years before. For mysterious reasons that have forced him to live outside of traditional society, Vincent has been in hiding for the past 10 years to guard his secret – when he is enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super-strength and heightened senses. Catherine agrees to protect his identity in return for any insight he may have into her mother’s murder. Thus begins a complex relationship between Catherine and Vincent, who are powerfully drawn to each other yet understand that their connection is extremely dangerous for both of them. The series stars Kristin Kreuk (“Smallville,” “Chuck”) as Catherine, Jay Ryan (“Terra Nova”) as Vincent, Max Brown (“The Tudors,” “MI-5”) as Evan, Nina Lisandrello (“Nurse Jackie”) as Tess, Nicole Gale Anderson (“Make It or Break It”) as Heather, Austin Basis (“Life Unexpected”) as J.T., and Brian White (“The Shield,” “The Cabin in the Woods”) as Joe. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is from CBS Television Studios with executive producers Jennifer Levin (“Without A Trace,” “Felicity”), Sherri Cooper (“Brothers and Sisters”), Bill Haber (“Rizzoli & Isles,” “Thurgood”), Paul J. Witt (“A Better Life”) & Tony Thomas (“A Better Life”), Ron Koslow (“Moonlight”) and Gary Fleder (“Life Unexpected”).
MIDSEASON
“THE CARRIE DIARIES”
It’s 1984, and life isn’t easy for 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw. Since their mother passed away, Carrie’s younger sister Dorritt is more rebellious than ever, and their father Tom is overwhelmed with the responsibility of suddenly having to care for two teenage girls on his own. Carrie’s friends – sweet, geeky Mouse, sarcastic and self-assured Maggie and sensitive Walt – make life bearable, but a suburban life in Connecticut isn’t doing much to take her mind off her troubles. And even though the arrival of a sexy new transfer student named Sebastian brings some excitement to Carrie’s world, she is struggling to move on from her grief. So when Tom offers Carrie the chance to intern at a law firm in Manhattan, she leaps at the chance. Carrie’s eyes are opened wide at the glamour and grit of New York City – and when she meets Larissa, the style editor for Interview magazine, she’s inspired by the club culture and unique individuals that make up Larissa’s world. Carrie’s friends and family may have a big place in her heart, but she’s fallen in love for the first time with the most important man in her life – Manhattan. The series stars AnnaSophia Robb (“Soul Surfer”) as Carrie Bradshaw, Austin Butler (“Switched at Birth,” “Life Unexpected”) as Sebastian Kydd, Ellen Wong (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” “Combat Hospital”) as Mouse; Katie Findlay (“The Killing,” “SGU Stargate Universe”) as Maggie Landers, Stefania Owen (“Running Wilde,” “The Lovely Bones”) as Dorrit Bradshaw, Brendan Dooling (“An Elf’s Story: The Elf on the Shelf”) as Walt Reynolds, Chloe Bridges (“90210”) as Donna LaDonna, Freema Agyeman (“Doctor Who,” “Law & Order: UK”) as Larissa Loughton and Matt Letscher (“Brothers & Sisters,” “Entourage”) as Tom Bradshaw. Based on the novels “The Carrie Diaries” and “Summer and the City” by Candace Bushnell, THE CARRIE DIARIES is from Fake Empire in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Amy B. Harris (“Sex and the City,” “Gossip Girl”), Josh Schwartz (“Hart of Dixie,” “Gossip Girl”), Stephanie Savage (“Hart of Dixie,” “Gossip Girl”), Len Goldstein (“Hart of Dixie”) and Candace Bushnell. Miguel Arteta (“Englightened,” “Cedar Rapids”) directed the pilot, which was written by Harris.
“CULT”
Investigative journalist Jeff Sefton has learned to laugh off his brother Nate’s relentless string of obsessions, especially his latest rant that a hit TV show intends to harm him. However, when his brother mysteriously disappears, Jeff takes Nate’s paranoia seriously, and in the process uncovers the dark underworld of the TV show “Cult” and its rabid fans. The only person who seems willing to help Jeff with his investigation is Skye, a young research assistant for “Cult,” who has also started to grow suspicious of the increasingly dark happenings surrounding the show. The fictitious show, centered on the cat-and-mouse game between charismatic cult leader Billy Grimm and LAPD detective Kelly Collins, has become an obsession for its viewers – and now some of its devotees seem to be taking their fixation to deadly extremes in the real world. As Jeff and Skye dig deeper into the fan world, they discover that the gruesome plot twists on television are much more than fantasy for some very unfortunate people. The hardcore fans of “Cult” would kill to see what happens next… The series stars Matt Davis (“The Vampire Diaries”) as Jeff Sefton, Jessica Lucas (“Melrose Place,” “Cloverfield”) as Skye Yarrow, Alona Tal (“Supernatural,” “The Killing”) as Kelly Collins and Robert Knepper (“Prison Break,” “Shameless”) as Billy Grimm. CULT is from Fake Empire and Rockne S. O’Bannon Television in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, with executive producers Rockne S. O’Bannon (“Farscape,” “V”), Josh Schwartz (“Chuck,” “Gossip Girl”), Stephanie Savage (“Hart of Dixie,” “Gossip Girl”), Len Goldstein (“Hart of Dixie”) and Jason Ensler (“Franklin & Bash,” “Hart of Dixie”). The pilot was directed by Jason Ensler and written by Rockne S. O’Bannon.

Props to CW for having the balls to make Cult. Arrow is the weakest of the freshman class.
Have you seen it? Because as far as I know, the show hasn’t aired. Maybe we should keep the opinion of it’s quality to ourselves before you actually see it. If you are going as to what SOUNDS weakest(see what I did there?) then that ridiculous medical drama takes the cake.
I agree wwith everything you said, but there was seriously no need to be so aggresive. I mean calm down a bit.
But anyways, Cult certainly does sound like it will be the strongest out of the crop of new shows. So dissapointed that they are holding it for midseason. Looking forward to seeing a trailer (hopefully premiereing sometime today).

I did, actually You trolls have got to stop posting on this board… this is for industry folks, not superfans. Bugger off, bud. Your school bus is waiting.
If Ms. Finke wanted this site to be accessible to just industry insiders, she certainly could have made it that way, but she obviously doesn’t, since its open to the general public to both read and comment on.
Also, its definitely true that whatever some of you who consider yourself industry “types” think of the material thrown out for the consumption of we lowly “rubes,” the material lives or dies according to the sensibilities of the demographically correct set of “rubes,” anyway.
Everyone knows its a gamble, and the networks are putting out the shows that they obviously think have the best chance of success with their viewing audience, and that also includes some that they probably already know have a better chance than others. They aren’t spending millions of dollars in development just so some of you “insiders” can sit around and analyze them for your own entertainment like you were sitting watching some artsy foreign film somewhere. You are also entitled to your own opinions, but for some reason some of you think your opinion is more valid than others, especially the “rubes,” but that is only, of course, “your opinion.”
Lantern-lite has a point. Smallville was intended as a coming of age drama about Clark Kent aka Superman. It eventually turned into a teen soap an never fully grasped it’s full potential. If Christopher Nolan was a producer on The Arrow I could understand why people be highly optimistic.
Instead it’s by the people who worked on Smallville. We saw last year how co-creators of Smallville reboot of Charlie Angels failed. It was clear that their history of not being able to have a season stability of quality on Smallville. Showed how unequipped they were unable to produce the quality level required for working on one of the Big Four networks.
Pro-tip – this is an industry site. Most of us are in the industry and have seen screeners.
Arrow is POS. Dull and boring.
Why would anyone have an opinion? It’s not like a single soul sees these before they air, let alone everyone in the industry… oh wait.
Plenty of us have seen these shows already. Not everyone lives in flyover country and has to wait until they air…
So,just how long have you been a snob? It’s not really attractive insulting the people who feed your sorry ass.
How about you relax?
You are on an Industry website where people who (wait for it) work in the Industry visit and comment. Many of us have read pilot scripts and (gasp!) even seen pilots for the 12′-13′ season already.
The commenter could have easily seen the pilot for “Arrow” already.
Just to be clear – many people have seen these pilots as they have been tested amongst viewers and distributed to select industry professionals. While I believe the claim you are referring to is not based on either of these situations, it is still a possibility, so the aggressive comment was a bit uncalled for.
Uh……… Arrow is likely the strongest with Beauty and the Beast and Carrie Diaries probably the weakest of the 5.
From what we’ve been hearing, Arrow is their strongest new series. It’s certainly the one I’m most looking forward to.
With Arrow up against female skewing The Middle Suburgatory X-Factor and older skewing Survivor I think it could do really well!
All of these pairings seem to make sense (except maybe Fridays). But then again that’s what everyone thought about the Vampire Diaries/Secret Circle pairing. How’d that work out?
Random thought: How is everyone going to abbreviate Beauty and the Beast? BATB? B&TB? B&B?
Its different. Probably because Secret Circle sucks.
Very strong lineup…and strategic placement. Kudos to Pedowitz on this first rollout.
Starting the season in October is an interesting strategy. Will allow for fewer reruns.
Will be very interesting to see Supernatural on Wednesday night instead of Friday.
Surprised they are waiting until mid-season for The Carrie Diaries.
I wish them the best. Hope they can get some good performers.
I’ll check out Emily Owens, MD, The Carrie Diaries and Cult at least. Not sure about Beauty & The Beast or Arrow. Probably not. Is it not known which night they will air Cult?
Probably going to replace whichever isn’t doing well. Or perhaps on friday due to ANTM’s short season.
SUPERNATURAL, the last WB drama standing, has already been scheduled on Tuesdays (season 1), Thursdays (season 2 – season 5) and Fridays (season 6 – season 7). This fall it will be on Wednesdays (season 8).
I havent had a single series to watch on network TV Wednesdays all season and it looked like I was going to get another free pass due to stupid reality TV and whatnot on Wednesdays again, but now I have a full night of sci-fi/action programming! Yay! Thank goodness they’ve move it away from Fringe and Grimm, too; it was hell trying to watch and/or tape all those at the same time (had to give up on CSI:NY altogether!). And I’m in the female demographic, too, so those kinds of shows aren’t just for boys.
Shame that Nikita got stuck with that bore of a reality TV show as a lead-in, but it managed to survive this season without any sort of lead-in at all, so hopefully this will be positive for the best series on The CW (sorry, Supernatural’s past its prime, but I’ll still watch).
After Gossip Girl is done, I can avoid Mondays and Tuesdays completely. Thank goodness they paired new shows (Carrie Diaries and Emily Owens) with old shows I avoided like the plague (90210 and Hart of Dixie). Now I won’t have to risk seeing even a little bit of them.
Then there’s Thursday, where I’ll get my Vampire Diaries (hmm, might THIS be the best show on the CW? It’s hard to choose) fix along with the most exciting show of the new season, Beauty and The Beast. Hopefully it won’t suck as much as The Secret Circle (which did grow on me, by the end). I’m a little worried about the groan-inducing turning of Beast into a hot guy with superpowers (but then, what did you really expect from The CW?).
Overall, it’s looking to be a great season for The CW!
Felicity + Grey’s Anatomy = EMILY OWENS, M.D.
Castle + Moonlight = BEAUTY & THE BEAST
Suburgatory + Gossip Girl = THE CARRIE DIARIES
Simply pointing out the similarities, these could be still good/great shows.
That schedule is actually looking impressive esp with Wed + Thur.
The female skewing dramas Tuesdays may struggle and Mondays won’t get better for now but ‘Carries’ could work there. Though am suprised it was held for midseason. ANTM makes sense in Friday. Given it’s the only reality show on the slot it might do well. But for now given its erosion this season, it’s not the perfect lead for Nikita. But Nikita will hold its own!
Am most looking forward to see the ratings for Wednesdays!

And let’s not forget Cult midseason… yay, Alona Tal and Robert Knepper (even if they’re just in the show-within-a-show, they’re still on the show)! It’ll be interesting to watch Matt Davis play a different character after what happened to him on TVD.
Kind of sad we don’t know which night it’ll air… If I had to guess, I’d say Cult – Wednesday 9pm during Supernatural’s hiatus. Or, although it seems a little risky for 8pm, maybe Wednesday 8pm or Friday 8pm during a Next Model break.
Poor Nikita is stuck with the awful ANTM. That horrid show needs to vanish. Happy to see the CW has ejected its terrible reality shows and replaced them with scripted programs.
BTW, how cool is it that three CW shows have women of color in lead roles? Jessica Lucas on Cult. Kristen Kreuk on Beauty and the Beast. And, Maggie Q. on Nikita.
Actually, this means that there are will be 5 series on primetime broadcast TV with women of color as leads if you include Kerry Washington of ABC’s Scandal, Mindy Kaling of Fox’s the Mindy Project, and Lucy Liu of Elementary.
Yes, I’m sure all the lead actresses are just screaming “Look at me, woohoo I’m a woman of color, I have a lead role!” Really? Seriously? It’s annoying you even brought up race. All that matters is if they can act, and who’s the best for the part.
I think the Wednesday night line-up is great counter programming. Smallville and Supernatural was a strong combo. I am sure the “Green Arrow” purists will complain about Arrow throughout the summer. Hopefully some of them will give Arrow a chance in October. I remember people going cra cra when Justin Hartley’s Green Arrow started on Smallville. If The CW wanted a Green Arrow spinoff from Smallville, then Mr. Hartley would be staring in that show. I am glad Justin Hartley has a new show; I have been a fan of his since Passions.
Clearly this a go big or go home year for The CW. I hope it works out for the network.
I like this schedule. He’s done more with one schedule than Dawn did in her entire career at The CW.
Obviously Mondays are a wash, but Wednesday/Thursday should perform very well. Not sure Hart of Dixie is strong enough to lead off the night, but its pairing makes sense. ANTM will be DOA on Fridays – he’s just letting the show run its course.
The biggest surprise for me is holding Carrie til midseason. But that should give them plenty of time to market it.
What exactly is so good about this schedule?
He picks up an unwanted prequel to “Sex and the City” but not “The Selection,” renews “Supernatural” but cancels “The Secret Circle,” gives a pathetically short order to “Gossip Girl” and doesn’t line up the action series “Arrow” and “Nikita” together.
I totally agree… How does Secret Circle not survive, but Gossip girl does. It amazes me and how does The Selection not get picked up. I really hope they make the right decision and move forward with it and I wish they would switch Arrow with ANTM, Arrow is the smarter choice to lead us in to Nakita! I love the CW for taking risks on supernatural shows I love, but hate when then get canceled wtihout at least a little bit of a wrapped up ending. So glad to see Hart of Dixie, Vampire Diaries, Nakita and 90210 survived tho!
I have to say RIP to that Emily Owens MD, it’s going to be a time slot slaughter as a newbie against Happy Endings, Matthew Perry’s new sitcom, NCIS:LA, and The New Girl.
And that bland, new title certainly doesn’t help
Pairing Nikita with Top Model? Seriously?
Well whatever, I DVR that show anyway, but it still sounds like an odd match for the male-skewing action series.
CWs stupid to start soo late cause z1. Other networks will start earlier & people will get hooked on thier shows, leaving CW with liittle viewers 2.Fans will get tired of the loong summer hiatus z& give up on CW shows cause they’re tired of reruns, fillers just like during Sept-May season. They’re going to kill SPN on Wed. Up against Csi, Idol, Modern Family, Crimminal Minds ect. And Top Model on Fri.Top Models fall cycle ratings were good, but the spring has been brutal to all CW shows I also don’t think HoD (as much as I love it). Is gonna be a good lead in.
I’m looking forward to GG, CD, VD, ANTM, HoD, EO MD, Nikita, B&B.
I wish GOSSIP Crap has been cancelled already, but other than that it makes sense. FINALLY!
I’ll wait till midseason for Cult and, surprisingly, The Selection – which does sound like it might appear after all.
WHERE IS THE LA COMPLEX!!! That show is exactly what 90210 SHOULD be. Racy, dramatic and sexy. 90210 is not using Anna Lynn McCord to her full potential at all. She killed it in Nip Tuck as the bad girl, now shes the comedic foil? huh? The LA Complex is right up there with Gossip Girl in storylines and characters. I hope CW’s poor promotion of the show doesnt cause for its cancellation. Its worth another chance on the network.
“The LA Complex” is a Canadian series that the CW airs.
Not surprised “Top Model” was moved to Friday, however, I thought it would be paired with a rerun or another reality show, given that much of the CW’s prime demographic is nowhere near a TV set on Friday nights.
I think the late start is actually a good thing! Ever since CW launched, it has always tried to start off in early September and it has never worked. Many viewers jump ship the first few weeks of the new TV season, so viewers looking for something new to watch in October will find a whole slew of new shows on CW.
I know Justin Hartley must be mad that he was given the ARROW lead as he played the character for several seasons on SMALLVILLE. Does anyone have any behind-the-scenes news how this happened? Instead he co-stars in the Grey’s Anatomy ripoff EMILY OWENS MD
I meant Justin was NOT given the lead role in ARROW
Because this show is any way affiliated with “Smallville” and how is “First Cut” a rip-off of “Grey’s Anatomy”? Because it is a hospital drama with a female lead. The characters and premise are completely different
Have any of you clowns watched THE LA COMPLEX?? By far the best new show on CW. Amazing writing and delightful characters. Its a story that touches upon the real vulnerability of Hollywood and the journey of struggling artists at various levels.
Certainly the right direction for the network in terms of target audience. Last I checked 12 year old girls still don’t have any buying power…
Aside from sounding disturbingly similar to a rant of Patrick Bateman…i would like to agree with Chester. LA Complex is a dope show. Its what Melrose Place should have been.
They also need to develop comedies and liking the idea of them starting the season in October but with baseball post-season and such, that could hurt them but they also need to stay away from reality shows as most, if not all, of them have tanked badly.
SUPERNATURAL!
so excited about the new season!
I just got to mark it down somewhere that it will be airing on wednesdays instead of fridays!
and CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SEASON FINAL TONIGHT!
