British helmer Duncan Jones is tapped to direct a biopic based on Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books that launched one of the longest-running and most profitable movie franchises. Fleming gained first-hand knowledge of his subject matter working for British Naval Intelligence during World War II. Masterminding real operations inspired him to create Agent 007.
News about the project emerged in Cannes and on Jones’ fan-blog site and Twitter feed. His previous projects were Source Code and Moon. Casting is underway. Matthew Brown’s screenplay is based on the biography Ian Fleming, The Man Behind James Bond by Andrew Lycett. Jones’ movie, which is said to have the support of the Fleming estate, is expected to go into production later this year. K5 Film (Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur), PalmStar Media Capital’s Kevin Frakes and Liberty Films’ Stuart Fenegan will produce the film in association with Jim Young of Animus Films and Robert Laycock of the Fleming estate. K5 International will handle worldwide rights. Status of an Ian Fleming project set up at Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way is unclear.

Really sucks that this guy can’t get the funding for sci-fi flick Mute. He has a fanbase after Moon.
He should thank his lucky stars for nepotism. Isn’t that enough of a gift?
*Ding* We have a winner. ^^^^
Fassbender, please.
Yes indeed!
For anyone who has read the book this is going to be based on, is the book actually a serious biography or is it just another rehashing of the myths Fleming parceled out to lend himself an aura of mystery?
The last time I saw a movie about Ian Fleming, it was a TV movie on TNT starring Patrick Connery, Kristen Scott Thomas, and David Warner that was not a bad movie, but was pretty much fiction.
The book is well researched and attempts to analyze letters, files, and various events of Ian’s life but is really cynical and doesn’t cast Ian in a good light. It chooses to show Ian’s darker side and his penchant for s&m. I think it was an attempt to differentiate itself from the much better ’70′s biography, “The Life of Ian Fleming,” but contains much of the same stuff. The book also tries to weave a narrative structure from birth to death but comes off more like a list of facts so there’s really no myth-building there. Thankfully the script doesn’t focus on the dry truth too much and doesn’t try to cover his whole life.
Thank God. What a great script!
It is a great script, hopefully Jones will not feel the need to rewrite and “make it his own” like he did with SOURCE CODE. He’s a brilliantly visual director, a writer, not so much.
Seriously. Keep your hands off the script, dude. You have a career because you’re David Bowie’s son. No other reason.
Its all about the script and the casting..if he gets that done correctly it could be a compelling flick!
Ian Fleming’s rampant, class-based snobbery, racism and anti-Semitism will, of course, be included too, right? You know, for historical balance.
A warts-and-all approach is what’s needed. Just don’t expect Sony to release it.
Benedict Cumberbatch please
This is actually the right answer.
