EXCLUSIVE: All is well when it ends well. I’ve learned that after lengthy negotiations, The Office stars Ed Helms, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer have reached an agreement in principal to return to the veteran NBC series next season and are inches away from signing on the dotted line. I hear the fourth original Office cast member whose deal is up, B.J. Novak, has not started discussions, but he has a dual role on the series as an actor and writer/executive producer.

Keeping Helms, Krasinski and Fischer has been crucial for The Office, which lost its star Steve Carell last season and is facing the pending departures of Rainn Wilson, who is preparing to segue to his Office spinoff midway through next season, and Mindy Kaling, who got her pilot picked up to series at Fox. Getting Helms and Krasinski to return was not easy because of their busy feature schedules, and The Office is expected to accommodate that. Helms for once has the Hangover threequel to do. With the trio in place, the renewal of the veteran series, which remains NBC’s highest-rated comedy, is considered a formality. Remaining open is the question who will run The Office next season. I hear NBC is not close to naming a replacement for Paul Lieberstein, who will be leaving to focus on the spinoff, which he co-created with Wilson.

Good move, Ed. Keep the day job. Vanilla gets boring after a while. Cash those checks now! Tick tick tick…
Thanks a lot.
Yes, by all means, NBC, keep running this show into the ground..
BJ Novak’s character has never had any kind of truly significant part in this series, yet he’s always been billed as a feature star on the show. I’ve never understood that — is it simply because he’s also a producer? All the other characters get more lines and screen time than he does most weeks.
He’s also, as luck would have it, the worst person in the cast to deal with. It would be a beautiful hubris were NBC to decide that, yeah, y’know, we’re okay without you here.
Yes, it’s because BJ Novak wants the spotlight.
His role on the show has never been relevant except during the arc when he took over Dunder Mifflin.
If BJ was a smart man, he would have removed himself from the opening credits a long time ago.
Any word if the next season will be the last? I know NBC had considered pulling an ER and just adding new characters as needed.
initially this was a really funny show, over the last few seasons it’s morphed into something unrecognizable that barely has a pulse.
So is this why they passed on Friday Night Dinner? So Greg Daniels could go back to helming The Office?
That’s actually not a bad theory. Given Daniels’ track record, I don’t know why a network would pass on one of his shows.
End it already…
At this point, you have to realize, it’s all about favors being cashed in and keeping the production going to keep people employed. It’s not like anyone in the universe actually wants to see this show go on another season.
And yet IT’S NBC’S HIGHEST RATED COMEDY. That HAS to stand for something.
I do too, jackass.
They should make Craig Robinson the star of the reboot.. His character Darryl was one of the show’s best and funniest highlights.
But Darryl’s best moments on the show were playing off of Michael Scott. Now if Steve Carell would come back – I would agree this would be a good move.
Greenblatt should drive down to his local Balls ‘R Us, buy himself a pair, and then cancel this once-great crapfest of a series.
I used to love the show and the actors all seem likable, but man that’s a lot of money to spend on something no one is going to watch. I’d be much more impressed if they took a risk with something new and interesting. The rich get a little richer, eh who cares.
Though for the record, yes, smart move actors.
Are you really that stupid? It is their HIGHEST RATED COMEDY. That means a lot of people (Like me) Do watch it, Do like it and WILL watch it next season.
Krasinski you are a coward. You should have refused to do this current season now you are returning for more insipid nonsense. Do you really need the money this badly?
Everyone, please quit watching The Office so NBC will let the show go with at least a shred of dignity. You can catch the episodes on DVD and Blu-ray later.
