The BBC’s BAFTA-winning Sherlock is gaining popularity in the U.S. The PBS series’ second-season premiere drew 3.2 million viewers last night. While not a match for the 5.4 million posted by the recent second-season finale of Downton Abbey, Sherlock‘s number still more than doubled PBS’ average primetime rating. The solid number comes as CBS is close to picking up to series Elementary, its own contemporary take on Sherlock Holmes.

Before everyone starts carping about the CBS version: CBS is making a version that will appeal to CBS viewers. This is how they’ve become the most successful network. They are not making a remake of the BBC version. That would not work for them, and they know it.
CBS would not tolerate 3M viewers for any of its series. Elementary will have to do three times that number, or it’s toast.
“CBS is making a version that will appeal to CBS viewers”. I agree! This means it will be half as intelligent as “Sherlock”. When will CBS do something original?? They could do me a favor and cancel “Two Broke Girls”. One of the most annoying, dumbest, least funny shows to ever hit the air ways!
CBS is making a version that will appeal to CBS viewers? So generic, predictable, unchallenging and lacking in originality? Yep, it will do well. God network television is depressing…
Well, apparently the CBS version is testing well. I’m not going to judge it until I see it (I know, I know strange concept, huh?)
As for the PBS Showing – I’m glad it did well, but I was annoyed about the cuts made (for time, not content). The character beats are always what go, and it’s one of the things that make this series such a joy.
Glad I bought the Region 2 DVDs.
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again – how many of these viewers are SUPPORTING their local PBS station with even a small one time pledge of $10-$20-$25?
These stations are so focused on the big pledges of $35 or more, and those over-valued gifts that people don’t realize the stations would be glad to receive smaller support – especially in these times!
Elementary? Hahaha. They clearly have a deep understanding of Holmes. Or is that the typical grade school level for whom they’re going to dumb it down?
Have any of you actually ever even read Holmes? They’re fun but pretty silly. I think they’ve accumulated some weight through time and distance and Americans’ sycophantic worship of an English accent.
At any rate the PBS show is fun but not much more than that IMO. But I sure do love an asexual Sherlock… who doesn’t?
I can’t imagine CBS doing even near as good a job as PBS.
I just discovered this show last week on Netflix, and caught last night’s episode. Outstanding!
The thought of CBS creating a version that’s plays to the lowest common denominator while this wonderfully executed BBC series is still on – frankly, makes me cringe.
I thought Mr. Cumberbatch did a fine job in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”. Looking forward to his role in the upcoming “Star Trek” film.
Well, not surprise at all. 99% diehard fans of this series have watched it in Jan via BBC iplayer by VPN service or illegally downloaded it or purchased DVD from the UK. Besides, currently there are so many network/ cable hit shows in the same slot on Sunday and The Avengers in cinemas, and Sherlock is indeed not a period drama that most American believe to be the only genre the GB may do better than the US.
This is the best show on TV on either side of the pond. Cumberbatch and Freeman are awesome.
This show is so good. If you haven’t watched it yet, do yourself a favor. It is such a good mix of smart and funny. The performances are outstanding. In my opinion, Cumberbatch and Freeman are the best pairing of Holmes and Watson. And let’s not overlook amazing supporting performances by the actor’s playing Moriarty and Irene Adler. Can’t wait for next weeks show!
