EXCLUSIVE: After Deadline revealed that Universal Pictures was stepping in to finance Kick-Ass 2 with Jeff Wadlow directing his script, the big question was whether the original Kick-Ass cast of Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, among others, would be back for an encore. There has been a lot of rumors lately that Johnson, who stars in the upcoming Oliver Stone-directed Savages, would leave and that other actors were being lined up for a recasting. This has been exacerbated by the fact that the original cast didn’t have sequel options, which meant that returning cast members from the Matthew Vaughn-directed 2010 original would require new negotiated deals. The original cost $28 million and grossed $103 million worldwide.

Here’s what I am hearing. Johnson is nearly done with his deal to reprise as the title character. Moretz in a similar situation as is Mintz-Plasse. Also in talks is Nicolas Cage to return in a cameo role (his reps say he has yet to receive an offer). There are several other star roles for new characters, and it’s sure looking like it will work out well for a fall shoot.

Great News–Hope it’s as good as the original.
I know, I’m stoked!
Can’t wait to see some more vaguely pedophilic, ultra violent storytelling with lame yet gratuitously offensive dialogue.
Sadly, I hear Chloe’s too old now that she turned 14.
I agree with everything Sam wrote. Would also add “depressing” to the list.
I wholeheartedly agree with Mike and Sam. Totally unnecessary sequel. The first “Kick-Ass” was deliriously overrated, not to mention fraught with prurient trash and gratuitous violence. So Hollywood, of course, says, “I’ll have another…” Lame, upon lame!
Well apparently there are enough fans for a squeal…so your point is moot sir. Good day.
Kick-Ass is one of my top 10 movies all time. I have seen it probably 10 times and I enjoy it every time. Its a movie BOBBY..enjoy the excessive violence, enjoy the unrealistic plot. Its your imagination on steroids. I am a huge fan and cant wait for the second one next year! I suggest you join the convent and skip this movie!
I read somewhere that Moretz’s brother Trevor already announced on Twitter that he’s landed an Executive Producing credit on KA2. Can’t help but think it was part of her deal, that she’ll only return if her brother gets this vanity credit. Which is rather silly… also it’s quite out of turn to announce his involvement when hers isn’t even official yet. Either way, it means she’s back which is good for the film, though I’m not sure how they’ll pull this off, seeing as how the second novel takes place months after the first, and in the first film Moretz was 11… and now she’s definitely not.
They’ll probably pull it off by changing things. That often works.
and more often fails.
Maybe they’ll do it by, you know, setting it farther in the future than just a few months?
This has got “Debuting on VOD and in Theaters on the same day” written all over it.
For Heaven’s sake, WHY?
Obviously, but then KA fanboys will be all up in arms. Going to be interesting to see.
why would Universal want a superhero movie that not many people liked that only made $48MM at the BO domestically . . .that wasnt there’s to begin with? Hollywood needs to stop making sequels that no one is demanding. There are better films that deserve sequels before this one
It’s done well on DVD/Bluray and cable though. If they can keep costs down it should be a decent earner for them. the first one was a lot of fun and Millar already wrote the comic book sequel, it’s not as strange a choice as you make it out to be.
Have to say that I never saw it in theatres because of the negative reviews. After renting it on release day I was pissed off that so many people could say such bad things about it. Many of my friends were in the same boat. This didn’t make more money because of elitist douchebags giving it horrible reviews. I have a feeling that KickAss2 would stomp everything else for a week and at least double the gross of the original.
I know a ton of people who want a sequel to this movie. It was a great movie and if you didn’t get it, then go back to watching steel magnolias, short circuit and fried green tomatoes.
You kidding me FE? A) The movie made $98.166M in the box office (not $48M domsestically). Not sure where you got that bad data. B) This movie had a cult following after people who missed it at the theatres saw it on video. Why are you posting here if you thought it was “trash”?
A well-earned producing credit for Mr. Moretz. Sarcasm.
Get Chloe in at all costs. There’s no movie without her.
Pretty dumb the producers didn’t put in sequel options to a comic book film at that shooting price.
Would be much more exciting if Vaughn was returning as director..
I think Wadlow is an awesome choice. He showed great skill when working with a small budget, and it’s about time he got a franchise film. Rumor is that Vaughn handpicked him. I trust in MV and therefore I trust in Wadlow. Totally psyched this is all coming together.
I absolutely agree with you. KA was a piece of garbage. I shudder at the fact that I wasted 1 hour on it watching it on Netflix. One hour because I fast forwarded throught most of it.
I know! Just think, Universal is jumping to make a sequel to a LIONSGATE FILM! Thst means that even LionsGate passed on KA2! Good thing Disney owns Marvel or Uni would be in post on Punisher 3 starring Vin Diesel by now.
totally unnecessary…when i read the script for the original I was sure it would become a classic. gritty, violent, real – a true dissection on what it would be like if a real teenager decided to become a superhero. instead it wound up being a carbon copy of the very films it was meant to subvert. pass.
Im surprised by how ridiculous some of the haters one here are acting. Hey just because some of you don’t like “kick ass” that that doesn’t mean a sequel should not be made. what it does mean however is when the sequel comes out you can avoid it and everybody who did like the first film can look forward to it.
Good points…lots of hate for a film that actually was quite funny.
And, when KA sold about 1.5 million copies in its first week of release on DVD….that sent a big message to the industry (obviously one that some of our, ahem, “Insiders” here seemed to miss)
KA 2 has very good possibilities with re-signing Moretz, Johnson, and Mintz-Plasse.
The only thing that hurt KA was the R rating….and no secret that kids were paying for another film and sneaking into KA to see it…and get around the R rating
Have you even read the comics the movie was based on… if shut the hell up, your opinions are worth naught. It is a comic that spans two series and totally deserves a sequel to complete the story. If you didn’t like the content of the original, no one is forcing you to watch the sequel, so there is nothing here for you to see and you can move along.
3 series, and hit-girl has 2
I do agree the “haters” are overreacting. KA’s problem wasn’t that people hated the movie. The problem was nobody saw it. But it tested great in preview screenings, had a high CinemaScore and sold very well on DVD/BluRay. So, perhaps there is a market for a sequel as more people have seen and enjoyed the first film. But just in case, I’d keep costs down because the sequel should have come out already to strike on the buzz of the first film’s home market sales and I’m not sure this director can make something as deliriously zippy as the first film.
This is great news. Hoping it will be as good as the original and they get Gina Carano or someone equally tough for Mother Russia. I will probably see it on DVD like I saw the original.
Looking forward to the inevitable Kick-Ass 3.
Wow, I can’t believe the negativity. I thought this movie was hilarious. Some of you trash it, yet you’re the same people who would applaud all the gross-out comedies with little appeal other than for their shock-value. What’s wrong with a bit of gratuitous violence if it draws attention to its absurdity?
And you’re basing all this on total gross. Let me see if I have this right, if KA had grossed phenomenally well, then your opinion of the movie would be changed? I’d tell you to get a life, but what you really need is imagination, which clearly is absent based on your vapid comments.
Take a movie like “Equilibrium”. Went straight to DVD, but was an enjoyable surprise. But I guess a movie has to make a ton to be considered “good.”
And I agree they have to get the same girl back for the sequel. What a talent.
