BREAKING: Just as the French film Intouchables is about to be released in the U.S. after a blockbuster global run, UTA has signed the film’s star, Omar Sy. The picture has had a long run as the top grossing film in France, Germany and Spain and has been the biggest grossing non-English language film since The Passion of the Christ, grossing $339 million worldwide. The film gets its U.S. bow through The Weinstein Company on Friday.
Sy won the 2012 Cesar Award for Best Actor in The Intouchables, his third collaboration with writer/directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano. Sy is part of a writing and comedy performance team with Fred Testot, so he has the versatility to do drama and comedy as he broadens his scope to Hollywood. Sy, who continues to be repped by French agent Laurent Gregoire, is shooting the Michel Gondry-directed Mood Indigo opposite Audrey Tatou.

Next time anyone in the industry talks about how American Black actors don’t/can’t sell tickets overseas needs to read this article. A no name Black man starring in “the top grossing film in France, Germany and Spain and has been the biggest grossing non-English language film since The Passion of the Christ, grossing $339 million worldwide”.

Hollywood is full of sh-t. Avatar for example would have definitely made as much if the lead actor was some unknown black actor.
The problem is Hollywood doesn’t give minority actors a chance to headline blockbusters. Movies like Prince of Persia or The Last Airbender could have been perfect opportunities but the conservative mentality of the old white men running the studios came into play. In this environment a true talent like Idris Elba basically gets supporting roles while a talentless actor like Taylor Kitsch gets the chance to headline two big budget movies in the span of 2 months.
Since Intouchables is such a big hit, naturally Hollywood will most likely do a proper “Americanized” remake. Let’s recast with Liam Hemsworth. Or Chris Evans! Yay.
Whatever. Hollywood makes these movies all the time. Don’t you know the primary purpose of Black characters is to midwife some profound change in the white protagonist? It’s the Magic Negro trope.
