The Cannes Film Festival screening of Gonzalo Tobal’s Villegas was cancelled last night due to the outrageously stormy weather we’re having. Winds damaged part of the roof at the Salle du Soixantième, where the film was to screen. The festival confirms the out-of-competition official selection will have another official screening Wednesday in the Salle Bunuel — which runs little risk of leaking since the weather is supposed to clear up by then. Meanwhile, the fest reacted fast, and the stand-alone screening room was re-opened this morning. The winds have died down, but it’s still raining.

It is not only very wet it is also cold. Added to which is the French continuing to recruit their service personnel still too often on their ability solely to say “Non!” Anyone who is or has been here is well aware of how six or seven waiters and waitresses in even a small place can mill around, walk backwards and forwards, and still not manage to do things like, I dunno, bring each person a menu, the right dishes at the right time, ordered drinks despite being asked several times, remove all the used glasses instead of just one or two and then the bill within, oh let’s say, three days of asking for it. Well you voted Socialist, you millstones around the world’s neck, so this will be me laughing and waving ‘adieu’ as you spiral down ze, ow you say, plug’ole of life. And you can stick that in your Palme D’Or and smoke it. Thank you for reading, I feel so much better now.
