EXCLUSIVE: In what is shaping up as the first major deal made on the ground at the Cannes Film Festival, The Weinstein Company is in hot and heavy negotiations for U.S. rights to Code Name Geronimo, the John Stockwell-directed drama about the manhunt for 9/11 terror attack mastermind Osama bin Laden. The deal is in the $2 million range, and is being negotiated on the basis of a trailer for a film that is in post-production.
That footage was unveiled today by Voltage Pictures’ Nicolas Chartier and WME Global’s Graham Taylor (who just landed in Cannes), and Weinstein moved quickly to hammer out a deal with attorney Craig Emanuel.
What is most intriguing about this is that TWC can put the film into theaters in early fall, a move that would put it before the Kathryn Bigelow-directed Zero Dark Thirty. That film, which has an ensemble cast including Joel Edgerton and Jessica Chastain, won’t be released until December 19 after Sony Pictures decided not to put it in theaters during the presidential elections. Already it is clear that President Obama’s green light of the SEAL Team 6 mission will be a major issue in the upcoming presidential campaign, and Republicans have already railed against the notion that writer Mark Boal got inside information from the administration for his script.

The other intriguing thing is that a significant player in the sales effort for Code Name Geronimo is Chartier, who shared the Best Picture Academy Award with Bigelow, Boal and Greg Shapiro on The Hurt Locker. Now they’ve got rival films.
Scripted by Kendall Lampkin, Code Name Geronimo stars William Fichtner, Xzibit, Freddy Rodriguez, Anson Mount and Cam Gigandet and it is very much in the tense ensemble style of Act Of Valor. The logline: A break in the manhunt for Osama bin Laden serves as the riveting backdrop for a gripping story about the combined efforts of an extraordinary group of Navy SEALS. This is the story of a clandestine op, a perfect storm of people, and the rare synergy of circumstances that would amount to the most daring military op of our generation.
Voltage’s Chartier will now sell foreign territories on the film.

Yes. That cast is definitely hot. Screams theatrical. Especially after watching Dark Tide. Lol.
Why must Weinstein make more American Indians angry using Geronimo as synonymous with Bin Laden. Give me a break. Why not eliminate Geronimo’s name from the title and have some respect for a change.
Amen to that, Angry Indian!!! WTF?!?!?!?!? Enough with the racism against the First People’s!!
Geronimo was not a terrorist like Bin Laden and should not be characterized as such. Bin Laden was the worst terrorist ever and on Obama watch they got him, but please lose the name of Geronimo.
Check up on the facts. The code name ‘Geronimo’ was used to signal Bin Laden’s capture or death. This quote is from Wikipedia:
“The official mission code name was Operation Neptune Spear,[4][5] with Jackpot as the code name for bin Laden as an individual and Geronimo as the code word for bin Laden’s capture or death.[6]“
The reason is sir, that the unit of Seal Team Six’s that executed the mission is referred to as “Geronimo” IN HONOR of a great fighter. The operation was assigned to TEAM Geronimo. It was not even called “Operation Geronimo.” On behalf of all Americans, I would like to once again apologize for HONORING Native Americans by naming something that we love after one of their most gifted leaders. Maybe one day Hollywood will clearly represent the facts and your concerns can be alleviated.
You can post and repost – you cannot fix stupid.
More cheerleading for the Obama campaign, eh?
Just as SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was Spielberg shamelessly stumping for Franklin D. Roosevelt.
That would mean that not only was he alive, but campaigning for president. Dumb.
And if the mission had failed, you Republicans would all be calling on Obama’s impeachment. Translation: If the mission succeeds, don’t credit the President If the mission fails, hang the President. You trolls are completely transparent.
We did give credit to the president for giving the go ahead. The problem is everyone is saying it was a bold, brave move. However, that call was the easiest decision any president ever had to make.
“And if the mission had failed, you Republicans would all be calling on Obama’s impeachment”
Republicans didn’t ask for president Carter’s impeachment when his mission to rescue the American hostages in Iran.
To date, there has been no documented evidence released to the public that bin Laden was killed on 05-01-11; we simply have to take Obama’s word for it, and I’m not sure his credibility warrants that.
No if the mission had failed OBama would have placed the blame on the Admiral over Special Ops that actually gave the go order.
Folks get it right… several know sources have confirmed that Tim Osman aka osama bin laden was a cia asset and btw there is no due process. Democrats and Republicans are from the same paradigm. Wake up.
They live why you sleep sheeple.
Mark c–
If the call was the “the easiest decision any president ever had to make” then why was it that John McCain called Obama’s pledge to strike inside Pakistan “naive?”
Mitt Romney also criticized then-senator Obama for saying he would strike inside Pakistan.
I’ll leave out Palin’s thoughts (such as they were) on the matter.
So the “easiest decision any president ever made” was one that two REPUBLICAN presidential contenders said they wouldn’t have made.
Let’s not try to rewrite history please.
You would have thought BHO was the first one down the rope….
Credit goes to the military….and the intel weans……period.
On the money! And this from the folks who are apparently just fine with ‘privatize the gains…socialize the losses.”
My only problem with the CHOSEN ONE, was the speed of light he use to get IN FRONT of those TV camera’s to spike the ball. If things were done smart, the public would be finding out about Bin Laden death about now. After we mined all the INFO taken from that compound and acted on it would we ADMIT that he is now horizontal instead of vertical.
Wow, some of you guys are a bit ridiculous. It’s a movie. Try not to read into it more than that.
MarkC, no it was not the easiest decision. The President was the one that gave the go ahead to the CIA to make finding Bin Laden a top priority after the former President pretty much said he didn’t think about Bin Laden after he moved on to Iraq. You may have given credit to the President for the call, but very few conservatives and people in the conservative media did give him credit. Trust me, I have plenty of conservative friends that will do anything but thank Obama for that call.
John C, just because you don’t see documented evidence of something doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Please take your tin foil hat off now.
Marine Vet, first: thanks for your service. Second, Obama is the Commander in Chief. He made the call against the wishes of the VP and several military officials. He would’ve been the one to blame had it gone wrong.
G,
He made the call against the wishes of the VP ??!!?!?!?
Really, i thought that was the reason he chose brainless Biden, so he could ask him what he would do and know with certainty that the correct decision was to do exactly the opposite. Against Star wars, against GW I, for Gulf war II, against the surge, etc., etc. So you really want to say it was a daring decision because Biden was against it. Think about it, what would your call have been? If you say you don’t know you are a liar or a fool. Anyone with half a brain would have given it the thumbs up. Biden does not meet that criteria.
Interesting… so this will hit the silver screen in the US around election time. What an amazing coincidence!
When you have one single accomplishment, you have to shove it in everyone’s face repeatedly.
Oh, you mean the same way “Path to 9-11″ was conveniently timed too?
This is pure Hollywood propaganda plain and simple. Hollywood’s love affair with Democrats in Washington is an ever deepening cesspool of slime and greed. Not even this pathetic move by Weinstein will salvage the utter disaster that Obama has turned out to be.
really this is just hollywood greed. harvey thinks he can make a buck. even if this supported a pro right wing issue during an election year… and he thought he could still make money – he’d do it.
And Republican capitalists are well known for their ethics?
So 2 wrongs make a right?
Give it a rest- Bush tanked this country. And be honest no matter who would have taken over it would have been the same shit. Probably worse if it was the GOP again. Gotta love those 1% ‘s . Personally I doubt many will go see this anyway
Well the recession started before W took office, so if that’s how we rate it… Clinton tanked the country. Actually the Dot Com bubble bursting hurt the country and then 9/11 hit us in the financial sector. Bush struggled to keep the economy from really going under, which by the way Obama has done.
Osama was found using 8 years of intel gathering tactics that Bush gave the orders for that everyone hated, Osama was killed using that intel and at the orders of an Admiral… not Obama.
I’m sure this will have “the great one” flying the helicopter and then storming the compound while saving all the Navy Seals because they are too stupid to do anything without odumby’s direction! He will jump out of the copter at 50 ft. drop through the skylight on the reef, land on his feet while all the time blasting away with a 50 cal. machine gun.
How about Bush landing on a the deck of an aircraft carrier in pilot’s jacket and proclaiming “Mission Accomplished.” How much did that farce cost the American Tax payer?
The sad part is that “Fred Williams” has to make up his Obama parody scenario while Bush’s shameless aircraft carrier photo op was all too real.
The Mission Accomplished sign was put up by the crew. AND THE TROOPS loved what he did. The only people who hated that are left-wing radicals who eat granola and whack it to Moveon.org.
The whole “Misson Accomplished thing was choreographed, and you know it. And, most importantly, in demonstrated the stupid, swaggering, Texas hubris of that moron President. Sure, the troops loved it. And the American people loved it when President Obama declared that Bin Laden was dead, on national T.V. and thousands of American troops based in Afghanistan applauded and thousands more applauded when the President announced the drawn down of troops in Afghanistan by 2014, including the the families of these young soldiers.
Thank you, it’s nice to read when someone knows the actual facts. The sailors on the ship put up the sign, I know, my brother was there!!!!!
At least Bush was an actual military pilot. He’s entitled to wear a flight suit.
Bush spent most of his time in the Texas Guard drinking beer and hanging around the air base on weekends. Even John McCain, who was a real navy pilot and who was shot down over North Vietnam, suggested that Baby Bush was “over the top.”
How many supersonic jets have you landed?
You are mixing up Dubya with his old man – President George H.W. Bush) who was shot down in WWII. Dubya was a weekend warrior who never saw combat or was shipped overseas for that matter, and who was home based for the entire duration of his service in the Texas Air National Guard, and who had minimal flying time to boot and some unexplained absences from duty (likely the result of “Poppy” Bush’s influence.)
And exactly what was the extent of YOUR military service?
As is customary in the United States Navy, the sailors, not the President, strung out the celebratory banner. It follows the accomplishment of the ship’s mission, and heralds the arrival of any officer senior to the commander of the ship in question.
Your vapid observation is, of course, based upon ignorance, compounded by stupidity, and buffered by abject, self satisfying arrogance.
President Obama has done something that President Bush failed at, he has kept us safe from Al Qaida attacks on our soil.
Why not a quadruple feature linkage? Start with “The Perfect Storm”, then move on to “The China Syndrome”, then “How I Killed Usama bin Laden”, then “Obama, the Return of the New Covenant (or, This is my Son, In Whom I Am Well Pleased)”.
A prologue could be narrated by Michael Moore and Roseanne Barr.
Sure as hell beats “Shrub’s” “Slam Dunk” and “Mission Accomplished.”
It is because of Bush’s policies and his prosecution of the war on terror that Obama was able to get UBL. It was as much an accomplishment of the Bush admin as Obama’s. FACT.
Bush diverted American forces from Afghanistan by initiating a costly war in Iraq, based upon unsupportable evidence (Weapons of Mass Destruction). As a result, the war in Afghanistan is now approaching its eleventh year. Bush never brought the war against Al Qaeda into the Tribal areas of Pakistan. Obama’s authorization to use unprecedented drone attacks on al Qaeda and Taliban enclaves and sanctuaries in Pakistan is what resulted in the almost complete destruction of Al Qaeda’s tactical and strategic leadership.
….so you are saying that if we had triple the number of troops in afghanistan in 2001 (instead of deposing Saddam Hussein) that Afghanistan would now be a democracy where there is no racism and women make as much as men??
and those of you so proud of drone strikes in other countries… were you as supportive when we were bombing laos and cambodia??
Or did you consider that an illegal war initiated by presidents and a congress that was all democrat controlled?
The Mission Accomplished sign, much maligned and ridiculed, made perfect sense. We had won a war! A resounding victory with very few casualties on our side. The fact that LATER on the occupation ran into serious problems (no where NEAR the problems of the Democrat started Viet Nam War) does not take away from the decisive victory we had in Iraq. Jeez, can’t the troops even celebrate winnin a war?!
Actually, most people (I am referring to world population) see it not as a victory but rather as having opened a can of worms.
The mission accomplished sign refereed to the missions that the men on that ship were undertaking, not the war itself. There are thousands of missions in a war.
We went to Iraq because Saddam was inspired by 9/11 and had the resources to do much worse than Al Qaeda.
We also wanted to diminish the importance of Osama and make him feel comfortable where he was so we stated we didn’t care where he was. Its called strategy.
Rosanne Barr IS Michael Moore!
Why must we turn this sad part of American history into a movie? Why because Hollywood sees $$$ and thats all. Why does Hollywood hate America so much?
I have always wondered why does Hollywood get to profit off of the misery of others. There are probably thousands of movies and shows made from others suffering – for instance when Pol Pot kills a million of his countrymen and Hollywood makes “The Killing Fields”. 911 occurs and 3,000 Americans die and Hollywood starts cranking out their money making movies while patting themselves on the back. It is even worse with war movies because even though liberals hate the military they will gladly make millions off of playing soldier. I guess they are as bad as ambulance chasers.
Bin Laden killed, Republicans still outraged.
The only thing that outrages this Republican about the Bin Laden killing is our president warned us not to “spike the football,” and continues to “spike the football.” Hypocrisy, thy name is Obama!
The Obama administration had nothing to do with this movie. Zero. Nada. They are not spiking the ball.
If they told TWC to delay it after the election (like Sony is with Zero Dark Thirty), you would be on here screaming about regulation and interference with business.
I wonder if either movie will include the sub-plot of the admiral who actually commanded the raid from the Situation Room (with a miffed obama sitting next to him in golf clothes – just pulled from the course). How the admiral was trussed up like a thanksgiving turkey, ready to be thrown under the bus if the operation went bad.
If the mission had failed, President Obama would have been have been pilloried. His well respected Republican Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, who also served under Bush Junior, was quoted as saying that the order to launch the mission was one of the gutsiest decisions made by a modern President.
Just because one person that served under Bush said it was “one of the gutsiest decisions…” doesn’t make it so. In my estimation, it was the easiest decision any president ever had to make. If the public would have found out that O knew where OBL was and didn’t do anything about it, he would have been forced out of the white house before his term was up. The big question is why didn’t they take him alive? When we got Hussein we took him alive.
Ohh boy.. I must say, I’m actually getting excited for these Bin Laden pics. Let the box office battle begin… Go America
Where did you trolls come from? Let me save you some time: 95 percent of the people who read this blog are voting Obama. So go away. Hey, why don’t you go do something that helps the country. Huh? Come on.
And despite all of that, he’s gonna lose anyway.
What like go thru BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolishion/SEAL) training in 1980. Serve as an active duty SEAL for most of my adult life, including NSWDG (what you morons call SEAL Team 6), including several tours to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Where should I go, maybe to my voting booth to cast my vote for “ANYONE BUT OBAMA” for taking credit for what me and my fellow frogmen have done.
The proposed movie exalts the Navy Seals. Since the mission was accomplished last year, the Navy Seals have become romantic heroes to millions of boys and young men. I don’t know what the hell you are whining about.
Drudge Report
There are none so BLIND as those who WILL NOT see! Take the blinders off you Democrats. Wake up before it’s too LATE and the entire
Nation goes over the cliff of destruction.
Someone needs a vacation!
Two wars and the collapse of the economy..thanks for the 8 years of Republican leadership.
In honor of the Native People whose land was stolen, must we tie the biggest Terrorist in history to them? Really? Leave Geronimo out of it.
Second, yeah Obama got Bin Laden. Deal with it. The Texas swagger failed and now the Right would rather sell the lie of Obama as foreigner than the truth of Obama as protector. Not a problem. The truth cannot be denied no matter how much it hurts.
Two words: Mission Accomplished
What “Mission Accomplished”, the destruction of Al-Qaeda? Well look towards Yemen there genius you will find thousands of them. Maybe you mean the death of a marginalized old man by the name of Osama bin Laden; well he hasn’t been in control of Al-Qaeda for years. Maybe you mean the transfer of US stealth technology to China with the loss of our HH-60S, and then yes it was “Mission Accomplished”
That mission was accomplished, the one that the men on that carrier were undertaking. It was not referring to the entire war… liberals have no brains.
Republicans are green with envy. Bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive and achieving record profits.
GM thriving after Obama’s bailout forced the closure of a large percentage of card dealerships – and their service areas – out of business. Great for the unions – bad for America!
This new motion picture will star Will Smith as President Obama with Halle Berry as Michelle Obama. Will Ferrell would be the natural to play Bin Laden who was taken out by President Obama’s personal hand written plan and executed through his command on live TV. What a masterpiece. Obama will naturally be awarded an honorary Oscar for his part and consultation on the script. Isn’t Hollywood grand.
I support Obama but find these films on Bin Laden’s death very inopportune.
Nonsense. The are hundreds of movies about the missions and battles of World War II soldiers, many made in and around the time of the War. What is all this whining about. Its okay to feel good about our military and our accomplishments. Chill the fuck out!!!
The war on terrorism is not completely over yet. These films might ignite sparks which are now dormant and could enhance hostility toward the US and Europe. Not a very sensible decision. Plus, I do not think that these films are being made to make people feel good about the military and their accomplishments. The principal motive is purely financial.
so much for not spiking the ball.
Why shouldn’t he? He is the Commander In Chief. He accomplished the mission that was the basis for starting the Afghan war. The 2004 election was based on Bush lie, “He kept us safe”, when the worse attack on American soil happened on his watch. Then he gave up on the search.
Barack Obama renewed the search and FOUND HIM!
Go ahead Mr. President, spike the football, you earned it.
Scary that the GOP can’t even give a black guy credit for the one thing he did 100 percent right.
Soundtrack includes President Obama singing:
I shot Osama
But I did not torture his deputy
He’s not mixing anything up — you just can’t read. He said McCain was shot-down in Vietnam, and he’s correct.
I’m gonna guess they’ll leave out the part about Bush’s enhanced interrogation techniques that gave us the needed information to whack Bin Laden. This will be a propaganda film to try to bolster Obama’s re-election chances.
By ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ you mean Abu Ghraib interrogation style? I thought that what led to Bin Laden’s hide-out discovery was one of his wives’ revelations. Intelligence, not torture.
Obama killed Osama. You know Romney wouldn’t have had the balls to greenlight that mission. Speaking of balls, looks like Sony doesn’t have any cowtailing to Republicans and pushing Bigelow’s film back.
Even Carter would have given that go ahead. But to keep the facts straight, it was an Admiral, not Obama, that gave the order.
The President had a back door. If the mission was to fail it would have been someone else’s fault. I think it was the Sec of Defense as the “head of the mission”. As an active duty member, this is offensive; because he was thinking of blaming someone else instead of leading.
Sooooo, you’re offended by something that DIDN’T happen??
If they show us dead Osama, then I will watch…otherwise it is hollywood hooha, and just as big a load of BS as “the official story”….(since OBL died in 2001, according to Benazir Bhutto…oh, she’s dead too….strange?)
