Friends alum Wil Calhoun has been tapped as executive producer/showrunner of NBC’s comedy series Whitney, which is heading into its second season. The stint is part of his overall deal with Universal TV, which produces Whitney. Calhoun, who will work with series creator/star Whitney Cummings, replaces Betsy Thomas, who has moved to NBC’s new comedy series Guys With Kids as a co-executive producer. There has been a change at the helm of both NBC freshman comedies that were renewed for a second season. Up All Night has Tucker Cawley as new executive producer/showrunner.

That oughta save it.
Well not going to lie, this should help the show dramatically.
i thought this was gonna be the first show cancelled last season. “Work It” was a WAY BETTER show (not kidding)
Betsy Thomas leaves Whitney. Jon Pollack leaves Up All Night. Dan Harmon dumped from Community. The Office getting a new showrunner. Jack Burditt replaced at Last Man Standing. What is it about the sitcom world that makes running a show so difficult?
This show was bad, but it’s not beyond hope. Chris D’Elia was likeable, and Whitney has shown joke writing skills (if not storytelling skills.)
my advice: keep them and dump most of the supporting characters. they need add new faces and fresh energy to provide enough of a jolt to avoid the seemingly inevitable cancellation.
I agree some of the supporting characters, the red head in particular need to be replaced.
They cancel GCB and keep this crap-buster?!?! No wonder NBC is in the crapper
Wrong network.
People hate on this show too much. There were some hilarious episodes in its first season. As it continues to grow I can only see it getting better.
As a young woman, I absolutely adore this show. It may have had a rough start, but the last few episodes were pretty damn good and with Wil’s influence, it’s only going to continue to get better. Congrats to the team!
These last two comments are people who work on the show. This is the most laughed at show on the blogosphere. America hates this swill. Though I actually think she’s pretty funny, the writing is just atrocious.
If America and the “blogosphere” hated it so much, I doubt NBC would have renewed it. I found it amusing. Not the best new show of the season, but worth a chance to find it’s way. Better than another reality show.
Anyone with a little bit of intelligence thinks this show is terrible. And no one hates it — it’s too poorly written to inspire any actual hate.
I do like Whitney, too. Enjoy her stand up. But she needs a writing staff that knows how to actually write.
I thought this was cancelled. That’s disappointing.
Will someone “Cancel” this show & renew “Harry’s Law”, please.
Also a Whitney fan! Agree that the first couple episodes were rough but there were some truly awesome and funny episodes (Two Broke Up Guys for one). Chris D’Elia was fabulous and is a good match for Cummings.
Yeah this show is great, got awesome towards end of the season. The people slamming it are out of touch and just trying to be snarky and clever, while merely following what they’ve heard.
It’s very bad. It needs to head over to CBS with the other bland flat comedies.
It is still amazing that NBC renewed this horrible show, as it just shows a great deal of desperation on their part to become relevant once again and begging for a ratings hit. This show will probably get CXLed by mid-season if the ratings continue on the downward spiral as it has been.
By far and away, the least talented writing staff in arguably the last 25 years of television. The writing staff of that show should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Zero talent.
I’ve had the unfortunate experience of being on a Wil run show. While a seriously fantastic writer who writes some of the best drafts of scripts, he can’t run a show to save his life. But it’s not a skill set that everyone can have. Nothing to be ashamed about, but really NBC ask around before you toss someone that hat.
I actually like this show. I’ve always been a fan of Whitney, and am a new fan of Chris D’Elia. It had a rough start but I think it found a stride towards the end. I’m really glad it got a second season. I would much rather this be on TV than another stupid reality or competition show.
I actually learned to love this show. True, the first half was ABSOLUTELY horrible but the second half was hilarious. Drunk Chris D’elia’s character was nothing short of entertaining and the story lines came together nicely. Actually, the season finale was really good. I’ve decided to give this show another shot and I’m SO happy to hear that NBC gave them a season 2. I hear they have a whole new writing staff so this will definitely improve the quality. Can’t wait!
I missed the first-half of Whitney only finding the show in Janurary 2012. The show has been great from my POV. (Although the character of Mark can be killed off IMHO and keep Neil’s bi-confusion). I’m not an industry insider – just a regular guy. The season finale was pretty awesome and good music choice of “Young Blood.”
