It would be a huge upset if the preternaturally gifted 16-year-old wins Season 11 of American Idol on Wednesday. Online odds-makers unanimously consider the Dave Matthews-influenced Phillip Phillips to be the favorite — which would make him the fifth consecutive white guy with a guitar to take the prize. Ireland’s Intrade gives Phillips a 78% chance of winning. At Curacao-based Pinnacle, a $1 bet on Phillips would pay $1.262, while one on Sanchez would pay $4.22 if she wins. Antigua’s Intertops says $1 should pay $1.40 on Phillips and $2.75 on Sanchez. And at Bodava, based in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake, Canada, a $13 bet on Phillips would net you a $4 profit if he wins while $2 on Sanchez would pay $5. What to do? As far as I’m concerned, nothing. Despite the show’s hype about the democratic nature of its “nationwide vote,” we know little about who casts ballots and how accurately their votes are counted. Frank Luntz isn’t out there conducting focus groups. Still, if you’re foolish enough to bet on the outcome, why not be bold? Perhaps NBC’s The Voice this year lured away some of the viewers pre-disposed to support a good looking guy. Maybe Sanchez will win the lion’s share of people who supported gospel-influenced singer Joshua Ledet, voted off last week. If you haven’t guessed it yet, I’ll admit that Idol is a guilty pleasure — and that I admire Sanchez’s musical intelligence, vocal control, versatility, and nerve. I’d like to see her shake things up. The show’s producers, and record label, probably should as well just to make the cheesy proceedings a little less predictable. As the New York Lottery says, hey, you never know.

I thought Phillip Phillips was wonderful! He sings his way which is what an artist is supposed to do! The last night I was so ready for it to be over! I have never in my life heard so much screaming and ugly freaking looks on singers’ faces! Wow! It is nice to see such a humble guy that has such a passion and love for music win! It has long been presumed that Philip Phillips would win because he has never been in the bottom 3 and although I’m happy that he made it into the finals (although I much would have preferred colton), I have to say my sentimental favorite and powerhouse singer and therefore winner of American Idol should be Jessica Sanchez. Even singers like Adam Lambert and Kris Allen and Jennifer Hudson have agreed that Jessica should win. Does the best singer win? Not always, but it should, isn’t that what a singing competition is supposed to be about?
It does not matter that he has NEVER been in the bottom 3 it’s all for show first off..Adam Lambert was NEVER in the bottom 3 either guess what he lost! It’s who the producers want to win in the end to be quite frank with you. Adam was the popular winner by vote but because he didn’t have the squeaky clean image that American Idol wanted to portray Kris Allen was chosen. Adam has over 1 million followers and Kris doesn’t even come close that should tell you something. We never see the numbers so producers can do and say whatever they want we will never know. And for the people saying neither can sing. That is all a matter of opinion. I don’t think Steven Tyler can sing but some people would beg to differ with me. You listen to Jessica’s studio versions of the songs she has sung on Idol and your opinion might change. I listened to her studio version of My All from Mariah and it blew me away. Just go to youtube they are all there. And for someone to say Idol has created no stars? WOW Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert who was nominated for a Grammy and just went Platinum with his first album, Jennifer Hudson…Grammy and Oscar…Jordin Sparks just finished a movie with Whitney Houston? I liked Phillip a lot early on but then he started making every song the same growly DMB-style jam. Jessical is like a singing robot, hitting all the notes without any emotion. If they restricted every number to a single vote you’d see a different result.

When it came down to stage presence and all around class there was only one. I think Jessica may have given it away with the last song. The thing that I cannot get passed with Phil was how nervous and the constant leg rubbing when he finally performed without his admitted security blanket guitar.
If they had not saved Jessica,within the rules,Idol would not have had a true champion ….. they would not have had to go through Jessica.

I’m so sick of the comment that Jessica is boring or robotic — she has shown more of her character and likeability these past few weeks but why does she have to constantly prove herself with a voice as powerful as hers — and I have NEVER heard her scream. She is a phenomenal singer and I can only hope that America gets it right, either way Philip will do just fine — both are guaranteed a record deal now.

Jessica’s problem isnt about her voice/talent but rather the limited demographic of audience she appeals to. Also, not taking anything away from Philip, he’s no doubt got talent but I think what kept him from the bottom 3 were the votes of the female fans who voted for him for his looks rather than his voice/talent.
If Jessica wins, I think it would be the FIRST time someone ‘VOTED OFF’ by viewers (NOT including WILD CARD rounds) went on to win the show. Plus, the producers gave Jessica OR Joshua the so-called Pimp-Spot (Last One to Sing) the last 4 weeks… Seems like this is the most rigged Idol EVER. My vote is for Phillip. Go PHILLIP !!!!

You are wrong. As someone, me, in the inner circles of the show and music we all laugh alone over dinner. It’s a circus contest not a talent contest. Jimmy knows it. But he will make money and will promote the balls out of it to do his job. They are bad singers. Take it from me. Someone who was in the studio with the likes of real talent like Janis Joplin, Stevie, and Mick. You don’t realize how off base you are. Talent is different then being given a choice of no talent A and no talent B and picking one. Doesn’t mean talent. Again, Jessica is bad. As I sat in a room with two others and Nora Jones, Jessica would be out of place. She is a mimic not an original voice. Dan Ackroyd did a great Nixon. He wasn’t Nixon. And Phillip ain’t Dave Matthews or John Popper. He’s a mimic. That’s what you get. Talent, real talent, is one in a million. Start studying my friend. You don’t get it.

I’m so sorry to disagree but, emotional breadth – the telling of a story in song is most certainly there in the youngest of singers with great or even good talent. Sure, the 6 or 10 year old can display vocal gymnastics but soon after, there needs to be an understanding of what it is you’re singing about. You don’t suddenly realize you’ve connected with your music’s words at age 20! You had to know that from the earlier days. Look at Judy Garland in her teens with ‘Zing Went The Strings’ – look at Michael Jackson with ‘Ben’ – look at Selena or Whitney or Janis or Mathis. They felt the words. They were story-tellers first. Don’t tell me a singer will find that later – it is first or it ain’t there – the rest are not singers, they are mimics.
you understand talent and music. You can make talent. Great talent is in a person. It’s a passion. It’s not mimicking. These are the best mimics, I guess. That’s why I saiid, none of them could walk in a room and sit across from real talent. These kids are good for high school where mimicry is often confused with the real thing. Kelly Clarkson sang the heck put of Respect. She sounded like Aretha. Put her in a room with Aretha and suddenly you realize Kelly should sing at her school dance, not for Americs. The show is silly. Aretha, Kelly Clarkson and Jessica all have talents. If you’ve seen Aretha when she was 16 no doubt you would retract what you said. Aretha becomes a legend because the songs she sings were awesome and written for her if not written by herself. If you would give Jessica a chance like what Aretha had I’m sure she will be a legend too. Just because a singer sings another singer’s song doesn’t makes her or him less talented. Hadn’t it occur to you that given the chance to record all original and amazing songs, all those mimics you called would fare the same or even better than Aretha. Whitney didn’t made me cry when she sang I Will Always love You, but Jessica did. It takes talent for one singer to evoke tears from her audience. i think what people mean is that in telling a story, experience helps. So storytelling can be learned, not like you would a skill, but because the more you live, the more you understand the meaning behind the songs…
I fully expect when sitting in the audience tonight that it will be Phillip Phillips. Why? The ever present voting of 13 year old girls. If we could only do something about the cartoon name – ah well nice guy he’s gonna go far as will they both.
I think Phil Phillips made a huge mistake doing Matchbox Twenty’s, “Disease” last week, a number I enjoyed enough to cause me to research the original song. What an epiphany! Phil and Rob Thomas sound “exactly” alike, and that’s an understatement! Here I’d given Phil undeserved kudos all these weeks for being his own man, when at best, he’s just a really good Rob Thomas impersonation. To top that off, his final Bob Segar number was the only time this season we’ve seen the real Phil Phillips stand up, and we can thank Jimmy for that. Although it was “okay”, Phil’s struggle to hit the notes was apparent to even a tin ear. Thank you Jimmy! Sorry Phil. A Rob Thomas impressionist doesn’t deserve the title. Too bad his voice didn’t perfectly match Robert Plant or Roger Waters. Jessica’s a clear winner in my book, no matter how things shake out!

I for one am rooting for Phiilip. I find that when I watch him perform, he makes me feel something. I can picture myself downloading his song and pay to see him perform. Jessica is a wonderful giril and I agree she sings very well How ever I just find her to be a good singer and not a performer!
And in the end it really won’t matter, I find in most cases the non winners of idol do better than the winners! We can all say Lee Dwyzes who ?, Ruben Studdard who ? Chris Allan who? Taylor Hicks Who?

Sorry, but since Jessica was almost eliminated, the Philippines have been non-stop in thiur efforts to make sure that Jessica is the American Idol, they have found a way to vote by using Facebook, other means of online voting and even making calls via satelite hook ups from various malls and thousands use and have Magic Jack with several different phone numbers… they estimate over 10 million Filipinos are now voting the maximum times for her… so not sure it is all because of her talent or even if it fair, she went from being the lowest number of vote to being the top vote getters the past 3 weeks…
