UPDATE, 10:50 AM: Dish says its customers will lose channels including AMC, IFC, WEtv, and Sundance at the end of June – but that’s “solely” due to “their high renewal cost when compared to their low viewership. Dish will make alternative high-value channels available to our customers as replacements.” Dish notes that the suite of network “overall have had significant declines in viewership among DISH subscribers.” What’s more, the networks’ hit shows including Mad Men are “available to our customers through multiple other outlets such as Amazon.com, iTunes and Netflix.” What about AMC Networks‘ charge that Dish is retaliating for the cable networks company’s breach of contract suit involving the VOOM HD channels? Dish says that’s “a separate matter.” The satellite company “decided to exercise its right to terminate the VOOM agreement. The questions involved in the discovery dispute do not change those facts.”
PREVIOUS, 7:20 AM: AMC Networks says that the satellite company is threatening to do just that — but not for the usual reason: price. The owner of channels including AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WEtv says that it may be dropped because Dish doesn’t like the way things are going in a $2.5B breach of contract suit that AMC filed in 2008 after Dish dropped the VOOM suite of HD networks. (The suit began when AMC was part of Cablevision; it was spun off last year.) The trial judge said in a pre-trial ruling that Dish had destroyed evidence and showed a “pattern of egregious conduct and questionable – and, at times, blatantly improper – litigation tactics.” Dish appealed, but the ruling was upheld by the Court of Appeals. Dish then took the matter to the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court. It said last week that it wouldn’t overturn previous decisions. That clears the way for the original breach of contract case to go to trial. “Within days of the denial of Dish’s final avenue of pre-trial appeal, Dish informed AMC Networks of its intention to drop its award-winning networks,” the programmer says in a release this morning. Dish’s current contract with AMC expires on June 30. Still waiting for Dish’s side of the story.

Sounds like the folks at DISH are a pleasant bunch of grown ups.
Sounds like AMC is getting too big for their britches. Two critically though not exceptionally financially successful scripted shows, and they think that has earned them higher renewal fees?
Yes but Mad Men and Breaking Bad have increased in viewership every year as critical acclaim and word of mouth has spread. And let’s not forget that The Walking Dead is the highest rated show on cable.
Well I’m considering dropping Dish Network. Who’s too big for their britches?
Dish keeps prices low and they are smart in how they go about it.
If AMC allows DISH to drop the channel, people will just find their shows other ways. It’s very easy.
I happen to agree. It won’t be the end of the world if AMC gets dropped. I love the programming on AMC but I also like Dish’s low prices. Times are hard for everyone these days. There are lots of other programs to watch. Dish has to do whatever it has to to keep the programming prices low. If prices are to be raised to Dish, they will in turn have to look to us viewers for higher prices. All price hikes eventually gat passed down to us!! The consumer. Do what you have to Dish!
This could make for an interesting standoff, though it sounds a lot like blackmail or extortion.
Dish is basically threatening AMC by sending the message: “Drop the lawsuit or we’ll drop you”.
AMC stands to lose a lot, especially with the impending upfronts. The Dish threat could reduce AMC’s ad values, as they scramble for advertisers to fill spots in their Fall schedule.
On the other hand, if Dish drops AMC, many subscribers will be pissed off and may defect to an alternative cable/satellite provider, hurting Dish’s wallet.
Ultimately, however, it will be the subscribers who lose the most. They will have to either lose all the AMC et al. programming or they will have to switch providers.
Uh, there are other ways to watch those shows.
Uh, why should I have to continue to pay the same price for DISH plus the itunes charges to watch Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead and Hell on Wheels? That $2.99 per episode cost would add up quickly. If DISH follows through with this, they’ll lose a 12 year subscriber.
If Dish Networks drops AMC I’m going to Direct. My neighbor has already done it. We went up a package just to get AMC to watch The Walking Dead. I’ve been with Dish for a while.
Please drop AMC and give me a reason to drop you Dish.
I dare you.
Let’s wait to hear Dish’s side of this story. Charlie Egan has run an excellent innovative and consumer oriented company for many years. For now I’m with Dish.
Really? Only had Dish for less than a year. The entire time they have dropped channels, causing my husband to miss ball games, and now they are dropping my favorite channels?
In every story I have seen about this situation, including the above story, the Dish side of the story has been–AMC wants to charge us more than they did in the current contract which is about to expire, and we will not pay for this because we would then have to pass this added cost on to our customers which would go against the central principle of our business model. We get good deals with our content providers and pass those savings on to our customers thus positioning ourselves as the low cost leader in our industry. Same as the 1 year ago+ kerfuffle with Fox over FX NatGeo & some sports channels. The problem is I don’t feel like they are saving me money or giving me better value by dropping a group of channels that have unusually good AND POPULAR shows, not lowering my price, and instead spontaneously switching to HD Net presents Nickelback. I had to go flush my eyes and ears out with bleach after that little stunt. Dish come on play like a grownup, its not like you are not going to raise my bill in the next year or so any way. Hash this out with AMC, and don’t screw over your customers by dropping these channels in the meantime. Now lets all take a deep breath, put our big boy undies on, take turns & share the ball, and shake hands and be friends.
Dish is telling it’s customers to “go buy AMC somewhere else” when they say “available to our customers through multiple other outlets such as Amazon.com, iTunes and Netflix.”
They forgot to mention AT&T U-VERSE and a lot of other great cable and satellite providers.
Why not cut the cord/dish and go to Netflix for everything? Cable and dish networks compete based on convenience of getting everything quickly, in one place. They sure don’t compete on cost, where Netflix has them beat cold.
If cable/dish networks start to give up their convenience advantage, then consumers will start shopping on price, and dump them entirely.
Sundance disappeared from my DISH more than a year ago. That is one of the reasons I disappeared from them. And I am still scratching my head at what Blockbuster does for their business. Wasn’t that a company with stores providing a service nobody uses anymore?
I feel like AMC viewers won’t have this. Dish better do something fast.
A number of years ago AMC, IFC, etc started inserting ads into the movies destroying any reason I have to watch those stations. So, if Dish drop them so be it.
As for the price increase that AMC is asking, I think its about time that Dish holds firm, they should of never cave to Fox. To me price increases are for non-commercial channels.
AMC stands for “a million commercials” and IFC stands for “interrupting films constantly.” Seriously, they have both become completely unwatchable.
Now I have to pay separately to watch the latest episode of Mad Men? I don’t want to watch it on my computer. You’ve got to be kidding. Dish is bogus and will lose a lot of subscribers.
I second these feelings. SL
I’ve been a Dish customer for a long time, and over the years I’ve been supportive when they’ve temporarily dropped channels during contract negotiations. I have reluctantly accepted seeing my monthly bill almost double for the same number of channels I’ve always had. But as a fan of Mad Men, and a HUGE fan of The Walking Dead, a permanent loss of AMC will be a deal breaker.
How much ARE customers supposed to pay for channels most don’t even watch? I have DISH which means I have around 900 channels. Losing three or four doesn’t mean squat to me.
If they are going to drop channels that nobody watches then how about starting with all the shopping channels, I don’t think any of their shows could be described as “critically aclaimed winner of multiple Emmys and Golden Globes”. Then again you never know I have heard nomination buzz about programing like Debbie’s Super Sequined Cat Sweater Hour, the miniseries The Week Long Faux Gemstone Brass Plated Jewelry Marathon, and that classic More Cheep Chinese Plastic Crap That You Don’t Need Available In Bone, Ebony, & Simulated Designer Stainless.
How much are we talking when it comes to these renewal rights?
What does DISH pay for AMC vs. ESPN vs. Discovery Science? Every network must be a different rate, yes?
10 million, 100 million, 500 million?
Help me learn.
If Dish drops amc and I cant watch “the Walking Dead” in the fall, i will be switching to directv for sure.
Great, now there are no satellite TV services worth purchasing.
You stupid asses! AMC networks are the most progressive and innovative networks out there, and you have no right to drop them! You people at Dish Network can stick it!
The only original series television dramas are to be found on cable/dish and AMC has three of the best. Dish drops AMC and I go elsewhere.
If this is a money cost saving thing by dish network I WOULD get rid of the FOLLOWING CHANNELS such as PRST, KTV, ANGELL AND RFDTV AND THE SOAP CHANNEL and others similar.
I mostly watch the AMC, AND IFC CHANNELS alot and quess i’ll half to see DIRECT TV FOR PRICING.
DISH better get things right or they will loose alot more subscribers.
I love Dish, I only have a choice of satellite where i live. Please don’t drop AMC it has the best programing. Don’t do this to us.
Dish cannot be faulted for trying to keep subscription costs in check by keeping low-watched cost-escalating networks in check. I find shows (Covert Affairs, White Collar, Suits) on rival networks like USA much more compelling anyway.
AMC should decrease what they charge Dish Net. Amc has more commercials than any other channel that gets revenue from commercials. Example: Space Cowboys is a 1 hour & 30 minute movie, but AMC shows it as a 3 hour movie.
This is just a repeat of the negotiations with FOX/FX last year and luckily that turned out in the viewers favor but where does it end? Now it’s AMC and who knows maybe next year it will be USA. I too love many of the shows on USA and would prefer to watch those show over Mad Men but I feel like Dish network is making so much money off it’s customers I think they can afford to keep the programming without raising the cost but they will inevitably pass the cost off to their customers simply because they can.
My dish bill goes up. My favorite channels disappear. Time to cancel the tv pig. Everything shows up online for a lot cheaper eventually. ‘bye dish!
Bye dish if you do this. The walking dead and i have something serious going on and its to big for a computer and im not paying extra for net flix or any of that shit ill go to direct tv or cable if this happens.
When it goes anybody know how i can watch the episodes of Breaking Bad.
I dealt with outages and threats over Fox, then FX. If they cut AMC I will walk away and break my long standing patronage to those bad, mad men of Dish. Dish will be dead to me.
I am outraged! i cant believe i wont be able to watch the walking dead in the fall! there will be alot of people going elsewhere for their cable, including me unless they can fix this.
Dish is getting expensive, try not being a new customer and ask for upgrades or hardware changes good luck.. $$$ going up. I agree AMC and IFC have some interupting problems and ” banner advertising” but i think in the end who ecer wins we as consumers will lose..
