It’s Messy is being hailed as one of the top comedy pilots this season, sailing through production, testings and screenings as the clear frontrunner at Fox and landing on the network’s fall schedule as a likely companion to flagship comedy New Girl. How come a hot show developed at NBC, created by and starring a home-grown NBC talent, The Office‘s Mindy Kaling, ended up on Fox?
Kaling developed the project, about a Young Bridget-Jones type doctor trying to navigate both her personal and professional lives, as a starring vehicle for herself at Universal Television where she has had an overall deal stemming from her role as a co-star/writer/executive producer on the NBC/Universal TV veteran comedy series The Office. Kaling has spent virtually her entire TV career to date at NBC, coming out of the network’s diversity writing program that landed her a writing gig on The Office.
While it is an office comedy, It’s Messy has a strong female lead. By last November, before the majority of the pilot scripts commissioned by NBC, including Kaling’s, were in, the network had already given early pilot orders to three pilots with female leads, the Sarah Silverman project, Save Me and Isabel. Save Me‘s order was cast-contingent and it looked touch-and-go for awhile but, after a long search, on January 19 Anne Heche signed on to star. Four days later, NBC made the bulk of its pilot orders, including a fourth female-centered comedy, the Roseanne Barr-starring Downwardly Mobile. It may have been Roseanne vs. Mindy for the fourth and last female-lead comedy slot on NBC’s pilot slate as around the time of the Downwardly Mobile pickup, the network passed on Kaling’s script, which had made it to the final round of consideration at the network. I hear the script was a favorite of Uni TV EVP Bela Bajaria who immediately thought of pitching it to Fox as a potential companion to hot freshman New Girl. I hear it wasn’t easy getting the project released from NBC as networks tend to hold onto their rejected scripts until the end of the season for competitive reasons. But with the blessing of NBC chief Bob Greenblatt, who also oversees the studio, It’s Messy was ultimately released and on Friday, Jan. 27, Uni TV sent the script to Fox executives who read it over the weekend. On Monday, they greenlighted the pilot. I hear Fox’s Kevin Reilly had been looking to do a show with Kaling whom he considered a potential next Tina Fey.
Taking a page out of The Office playbook, the pilot cast mostly unknown to the general public actors in the supporting roles. (Chris Messina is the most known name in the cast after Kaling). Kaling, who is leaving The Office at the end of this season to segue to her Fox series, got some help from her Office friends on the pilot. Ed Helms guest starred in it, while BJ Novak served as an executive producer. Meanwhile, NBC got a comedy with a female lead on the air too — of its four pilots, one, Save Me, was picked up to series. The future will tell how It’s Messy and Save Me will do for their respective networks. As a producer, NBC would benefit greatly if Kaling’s series succeeds on Fox just as the company has reaped big profits from another Fox series produced by Universal TV, drama House, which was set up at the network by Universal right before its merger with NBC. Still, it could be awkward for hit-starved NBC to see one of its own projects do well on a competing network. Fox recently found itself in a similar situation when Don’t Trust The B—-, a script it passed on last season, was quickly scooped by ABC and went to series, which, while not a big breakout, has had a promising midseason run this spring and is expected to get renewed.
This marks the first Universal TV-produced pilot to land a series order at another network in six years, since the 2006 ABC comedy Sons & Daughters. Getting a series on an outside network was a goal of the new regime of Uni TV as the studio is transforming itself into a supplier to all networks.

It would be awkward if it was a hit, especially if it’s the Next Big, Legitimately Successful Comedy, but how can we be sure? “The New Girl” is only moderately successful, and Fox’s scheduling is so schizophrenic that it might never be given a chance to catch on.
I like Kaling, but she’s supposedly one of the most egregious self-promoters working in television today. All the talk surrounding, like what we see above, only feeds into it. I haven’t seen the pilot or read the script, since I am not in the business, and perhaps others have. If so, is it really that good? If so, why would NBC pass on it?
nbc passed on a lot of good pilots in the past years…. it’s just keeping the track record solid
NBC is the same network that just renewed Whitney, while cancelling Awake. I don’t trust their judgment at all.
I get the industry is in love with Kaling for whatever reason, but I’m not sure the American public gives a damn about her. She’s more annoying than anything else and kind of hard to look at.
FOX hasn’t had a real comedy hit since That 70′s show. Probably because their schedule is always a jumbled mess, but whatever.
This is mostly racist and a rant of a supremacist whether you know it or not. Hard to look at? Maybe she’s just unusual but she’s not hideous. It’s your racist attitude that’s hard to look at.
Fuckhole.
Tea
Pointing out that Kaling isn’t telegenic is hardly racist.
My guess? You’ll blame the ratings dropoff on racism, too.
Moron.
I’m an Indian chick and it’s definitely more offensive when someone pulls the race card to belittle someone giving an opinion not related to race at all – just because she’s not white doesn’t mean someone commenting on her appearance is racist and it’s actually kind of more racist that your mind went there first. Let’s be honest, Mindy is normal world pretty but far from tv gorgeous no matter what color she is and it’s going to be interesting to see how audiences respond. I doubt the above commenter would say New Girl’s Hannah Simone is hard to look at.
Given that Fox now has “The X Factor” in the fall and “American Idol” in the spring, it’s schedule shouldn’t be so jumbled. Budgetary issues aside, it shouldn’t be that hard to put more scripted programming on in place of reality shows besides those two competitions. And when both of them aren’t on, that’s an excuse to either (a) run repeats of its new(er) scripted shows or (b) run a shortened season of a reality show.
What does “kind of hard to look at” mean?
it means he thinks she’s ugly. he’s not racist just because of that you PC freaks. get up in arms over real racism. I’m a minority and she definitely ain’t hot. So what if I call any other race besides myself not attractive I’m a racist?
I’m assuming it means she’s not cute. Then again neither is Renee Zelwegger and it worked for her. I didn’t get the racist vibe from that comment at all.
Non-telegenic.
Kaling is hard to look at, really dude? I think you need to check your eyes, this girl is beautiful. I don’t look at this show, so i can’t comment that. I just know fine when i see it, and damn that woman is fine.
Orlando = BJ Novak.
Also, I’m just glad I FINALLY know how someone her age broke into the business…. through the NBC diversity fellowship. Unfortunately for me I’m white (Italian) and male. There are no diversity programs for me. lol
The NBC writing program didn’t exist when Mindy broke into the business, it’s only seven years old and she’s been on the office for 8 years… I don’t know where deadline got its info…. I think she was in the Warner Brothers Writing workshop – which is not a diversity program.
No, Lilo. At the time, WB Writers Workshop WAS a diversity program (it has since changed).
To be white is to be the recipient of benefits beyond the reach of darker-skinned people (generally speaking).
Yeah. The Simpsons is a total bust for Fox.
I dunno, I think she’s hot and funny. Is she “TV hot”? No. Like someone else replied, she looks like a real world person. But I’ve dated dancers and models and I like Mindy. She’s also clearly super-smart to get from NBC page to writer to producer so fast. So that’s a plus in my book.
And, let’s face it, Tina Fey isn’t exactly a beauty queen, and that fact is part of her likability.
And Kaling’s character on The Office, which I can’t imagine she’s going to stray too far from on her own show, was very similar to the Michael Scott character (self-involved, didn’t take anything but his own life seriously, hyper-focused on whatever attracted his attention that day, etc.)…there’s no reason that character couldn’t fly on her own show. Heck, she would’ve been the best replacement in his role for The Office – the show would’ve retained it’s goofiness level, which went down when Carrell left.
Thank you, assistant at 3 Arts.
Good for Bela!
At many companies, that type of success would get her fired! And that’s the problem with this business; being brave and having an opinion leads to thinking outside the system, thus an uncommon success, and therefor potential embarrassment for the corporation. But hopefully not in this case.
This would all be more impressive if “New Girl” were as big a flagship as Fox claims, but the ratings fell heavily over the course of the season. It’s a success and should run a few years, but it’s hardly a huge hit that guarantees success for its time slot companion.
Umm new girl is a massive dvr show and the highest rated scripted program on fox, how s that not a hit?
DVRs don’t count for much with advertisers, as you know. And as I said, it’s a success by current Fox standards. But reporters (and Fox press releases) talk like it’s as popular as Modern Family or even 2 Broke Girls. It started out that way, but it lost a huge chunk of its original audience.
The show was pulling good numbers, but if you watch the show, it’s kind of a train wreck. They have arguably the best, funniest and most talented actors in town… some real gems. But the story-telling is abysmal. There is no rudder to this show. It feels like aimless wandering punctuated by strong comedic actors delivering funny one-liners every two pages. THEY are funny. The show, largely, is not; hence the drop in numbers. A great cast can only carry you so far. Needs a strong show-runner and better writers.
Haha you’re crazy. New Girl is brilliant. Get off your high horse.
Agreed. New Girl is a mess. THey have no idea what to do with the black character. Totally underutilized.
A lot of marginal shows are more impressive once you factor in DVR ratings.
T’Rank is t’right that the ratings fell over the course of the season, although to me, it’s not clear whether that was because of anything in particular or because they fell like those of all shows fell. Still, given it’s well reviewed and only a year old, it shouldn’t be brushed off. Were I controlling Fox and wanted the show to live up to the hype, I would consider moving it, perhaps to Wednesday or even Thursdays after “Factor” and “Idol.” That is, unless there’s another show that could support it on Tuesdays.
Fox is supposedly thinking about going for four comedies on Tuesdays. That makes sense, but I wonder if it’s better off splitting up its comedies and placing two on Wednesdays at 9:00 and two on Thursdays at 9:00. Whatever it chooses, it needs to stop moving shows around so much.
Great story. I was very interested in how the Kaling comedy got to Fox – especially after reading a profile of someone (probably the executive named above) who apparently shed tears after letting the project go to Fox. Good reporting Nellie.
Executives don’t shed tears. They also don’t give notes or “develop”. They just nod.
It wasn’t Bella that shed tears. It was the exec who held Kaling’s hand through the entire pilot process, who gave Kaling the idea for the show and who had ZERO say in the show going to another network. Kaling was in house talent and they let her go. I hope the show is #1 forever, Roseanne’s show is a effin’ mess.
Time will tell – all the best to FOX and Kevin Reilly. Mindy as the next Tina Fey? We’ll see. Television is a writers medium, and writing and producing/show-running are key to success. However, acting ability and ‘Q’ rating matter as well. Mindy has done a terrific job on the Office as a character actor. Being a lead on a show demands much more – I wish her the best. However, in my mind, the reason I watch the Office is (in large part) due to Jenna Fischer – if I was a net exec or developing a TV series, I would seriously consider developing something for Jenna. No disrespect to Anne Heche, but I wonder how someone (with a strong TV series background) like Jenna Fischer, Vanessa Williams or Sarah Chalke/Judy Reyes would have done as lead on ‘Save Me’. In my mind, a perfect example of great casting for a pilot is ABC’s Nashville. Connie Britton – gold. That’s how to generate buzz – good concept for a series, and then headline the cast with someone like Connie who is about as can’t-miss right now as any actress on television. I’ve been watching SVU L&O for a decade, and I really don’t even like the show all that much. I watch because of Mariska. TV Star-power. It matters.
Heche doesn’t have a strong series background? Or is it that you feel the others have more to put in front of the camera?
Mindy’s first pilot ” Mindy & Brenda” was at the WB in 2005
Well, this show still constitutes a major risk, I get why NBC went with Roseanne. Making the jump from second banana to lead simply doesn’t happen that often, and while Mindy has a fan base, it’s unclear just how big it is. But yeah if this is a hit NBC will look like a bunch of clowns (yet again).
Honestly this was one of NBC’s two bad decisions this year. The first was passing on Greg Daniel’s Friday Night Dinner especially as it stars Allison Janney and Tony Shalhoub (Knowing Daniels even if the pilot was a mess, it would evolve into an excellent show like The Office or Parks & Rec).
The other obviously is passing on this show considering Mindy Kaling was sort of reared in the writing and tv production process on one of their shows.
Again, how can we be certain that “Friday Night Dinner” is definitely dead? I don’t work in the industry, so perhaps someone here who does can tell me why it was allowed to start staffing just a week or so ago.
And if the pilot was that bad, why wasn’t it held until midseason to give Daniels time to work on the problems?
As for Kaling, I think it’s premature to talk about how bad a decision NBC made considering the show doesn’t have a place on the schedule just yet.
The Indian accent Mindy did at :17 in this clip was so funny: http://www.strike.tv/show/global-warming/http://www.strike.tv/show/global-warming/
I hope she does that in this show!
My crystal ball says the show will be gone by midseason.
Does NBC have a cap on the amount of pilots with male leads they can pick up?
Thank you for asking. I was wondering that too.
Of course not, there’s no balance in this universe. Are you kidding me? That would be like asking why they didn’t pick up any comedies with alternative ethnic casting. We only want to see vanilla t.v.! Who would watch a show with Kevin Hart or Vanessa Williams as the lead? I dunno… say MILLIONS of viewers who also spend their money at the theaters. Effing imbeciles.
Yes, they also have a cap on the number of pilots with alternatively ethnic casting because “the memo” said we only want vanilla t.v. Got it? Good. God forbid they should cast Kevin Hart or Vanessa Williams as the lead in a comedy. Who would watch? I dunno… maybe MILLIONS of viewers who broke box office records with Think Like a Man. Effing imbeciles.
Tina Fey isn’t even the next Tina Fey. 30 Rock has been really bad this season. Good luck Mindy. Not sure if you’re a lead actress, but we’ll know soon enough.
This looks promising…. but Fox is almost as bad as NBC at launching shows.
I haven’t seen the pilot, but I liked the script a lot. Genuinely funny in a lot of places. My hunch is most NBC execs are hoping it fails because while they have skin in the game, man are they going to look stupid if it explodes on Fox. Mindy was their girl and they will eat more than their share of shit sandwiches if it hits.
The gay character was written so one-dimensional and stereotypical it was offensive.
Mindy Kaling uses the Secret. That’s only possible reason for any of her successes.
1) The best thing for this business is competitive sales. Look what HOUSE did for USA – a hit on Fox made by NBC/Universal turned their cable network into their biggest revenue generator and launched a line-up of original series. MODERN FAMILY’s done as much for ABC as it has for 20th. Selfishness will lead to losses for everyone.
2) Strictly internal vertical sales results in talent which doesn’t want to commit to one place to sell (giving Sony and WB even more of a boost) while defeating the studio development process – there needs to be an independent production entity that can stand-up to detrimental network notes instead of being forced to agree with everything just because studio and network are run by the same person. It’s really great to see Bob Greenblatt taking off his network hat and putting on his studio one. It’s a win-win – if the show fails, he’s a smart network head; if it succeeds, he takes credit on the studio side.
3) I’m all for female-centric comedy, but try getting a guy to watch a show about an OBGYN called “It’s Messy.” Notice how all of a sudden the logline is being a “doctor” as if she’s a general practitioner.
Try to get a guy to watch broadcast tv period!
Men (esp under 30) are watching Netflix/Hulu/internet porn.
Think of the biggest shows launched in the last 10 years (that are not football), most (not all) had largely female audiences.
Mindy’s script was one of the best pilots I’ve read in years. Doesn’t make any sense why NBC passed on it. Then again, this is the network that thought “Smash” was the future of television.
You must have read a different script than me … I thought it was pretty dull, both plot- and joke-wise. There was nothing fresh or interesting there, just a retread of every rom-com cliche in the book.
Kaling gets a lot of leverage from being compared to Tina Fey, but is the comparison accurate in any way? Let’s see what happens with this show, but calling it ‘the next hit series’ is A) premature and B) reeks of one of the multiple publicists Kaling hires.
The Tina Fey comparisons come directly from Kaling, Howard Klein (her manager), and her publicists. They’ve been trying to push that meme for years.
It’s hasn’t worked. Nor will it.
stop you haters! She’s a huge talent and the script was the best comedy script this season…
You’re gonna have to try harder than that, Mindy.
Here is that person again. They use this same tact on all the message boards where Mindy’s mentioned. Anyone who likes Mindy or her work they claim is her publicist or manager or even Mindy herself. It’s such a funny way to discredit anyone who likes her. Keep it up, obsessed person who Mindy didn’t take a photo with at the airport!
Yes, they will be responsible……especially if someone swoops in and picks up Downwardly Mobile after they shelf it.
So Kevin Reilly thinks Mindy Kaling has the potential to be the next Tina Fey. Really? 3 million viewers is all he’s shooting for?
The title of this series describes the process of how it got on the air.
If it becomes a wildly successful hit, NBC may feel what ABC and CBS did when they turned down “Cosby Show” in 1984, which went on to be the top-rated prime-time series of that decade and the anchor for NBC’s powerful Thursday-night schedule.
I’m really happy for her success! She was actually one of my favorites on The Office along with Jim & Pam. The idea of her playing a doctor makes me laugh just thinking about it… but I’m not sure if it’s because I’m picturing Kelly Kapoor playing a doctor. We shall see!!
I know for a fact this was NOT because of bela. This was an agent (rice) and manager (klein) doing their job after a network president decided to pass. The studio didn’t even like this project during development. Seriosly the studio wasnt established as seperate from the network until AFTER this project was in development. No way to prove that in a comment on this site without giving away too much. But this wasnt bela, the studio or forsight by anyone. It was a good opportunistic move by a network after another network passes on a script the higher ups didn’t respond to. Will be good for fox but can’t in good concience let the studio get credit for reps and fox.
