EXCLUSIVE: It’s been three months since ABC aired the last episode of Pan Am and almost two weeks since the network officially canceled the freshman series. But the 1960s drama is not dead, at least not yet. As I hinted in my story from two weeks ago, Pan Am producer Sony Pictures TV has been exploring a play on cable or other platforms. I have now learned that the studio has had conversations with Amazon about potentially picking up the show. (Amazon already carries Pan Am‘s first season.) Like its fellow streaming brethren Hulu and Netflix, Amazon, along with Microsoft’s Xbox, has been looking to enter the original programming space.
DirecTV entered the original series arena by picking up canceled broadcast series — NBC’s Friday Night Lights and FX’s Damages. Netflix is doing it too with a new season of Arrested Development. Picking up Pan Am would certainly put Amazon on the map, though it seems at odds with the company’s recently announced plans to focus on comedy and children’s programming produced by its newly launched Amazon Studios. Because it ran on ABC only for a brief time and because Amazon already airs Pan Am‘s produced episodes, the streaming service can embrace the series and brand it as its own. It would also complement Amazon’s upcoming comedy slate with a high-end drama the service likely can’t produce on its own just yet.

Sony TV has an incentive to keep Pan Am going. The series, which started off great on ABC before quickly losing traction, is a big international seller for the studio. It is particularly popular in Europe, recently winning the best series category at this year’s Rose d’Or awards, considered Europe’s top television honor. Pan Am is one of several cancelled series that have been shopped around. ABC’s Cougar Town has become a success story, making a leap to TBS, Netflix looked at Fox’s Terra Nova and ABC’s The River but ultimately passed, while CBS’ Unforgettable has been pitched to TNT and Lifetime.

I hope amazon does take on Pan Am! If not them, then hopfully someone else will. I was SO disappointed that it was cancelled.
I loved this show! Great cast (Christine Ricci, Goran Visinjc) & intriguing storylines – spy action & romantic dramas all in one. As a Croatian/American, I think they need to check their historical facts/references…some anachronistic errors. But glad to hear it may have a second season.
Absolutely loved the show. I love the 60′s era.
Yes, I loved Pan Am!..Please bring back!
I do Pray & Hope That Amazon.com will be able to Pick up Pan Am For a Second Season.
Yes please pick up pan am I would watch loyally!
Somebody has to do something to this companies, “thay need to stop canceled shows for no #@#%$$%# reasons” If this showns are not making profits or whatever reason, make a nice and a real end!!!.So please, stop!!! doing this!!
I loved this program! I, too, hope Amazon takes this on and it continues for years to come.
Me and my friends in Finland LOVE THIS PROGRAM! Please please continue the program Sony Pictures! There’s no Sunday without Pan Am anymore! The last episode will come this week here
((
I can’t believe they canceled Pan Am. My husband and I are Pan Am addicts and we need our fix! I hope someone picks it up so we can enjoy it again.
ABC destroyed Pan Am they wrecked it with their idiotic notes they had a good show but they kept trying to “improve it” and they caused it to self-destruct.
Will ultimately be deemed too expensive to continue. Cast members have presumably all moved on. Why do these items get floated in the first place?
I don’t think they have moved on. Karine Vanesse’s pilot wasn’t picked up. I don’t think Mike Vogel’s pilot made it either.
I liked Pan Am, but I’m not going to lie, it was a relief that it was cancelled if for no other reason than Michael Mosley can go back to Castle as the 3XK killer. I assume the Pan Am work schedule was the reason they couldn’t let him crossover despite both shows being ABC.
If Amazon is getting streaming rights in Europe, where the show reportedly has an audience, this might be worth it. But as far as the American market goes, PAN AM probably isn’t worth the money. It had its shot on ABC, and viewers didn’t stick around. I don’t hear anyone screaming for its return, a la ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT or JERICHO.
“Netflix looked at Fox’s Terra Nova and ABC’s The River but ultimately passed”
Most recently it was reported they were negotiating the revival of Jericho with CBS, any news on that?
I LOVED PAN AM!!! So fun! Great cast and settings and costumes! Kelli garner was my fave by far!
This was the show I was most disappointed to see cancelled this season. If it could find life somewhere else that would be fantastic.
I liked Pan Am well enough to watch it all the way through. It looked great and had some strong cast members, but was dragged down by obtuse, ham-handed writing. Necessary on broadcast, maybe, but it suffered in comparison with Mad Men and other cable shows – and the comparison was inescapable.
So transferring the show off broadcast could solve that problem if the writers no longer feel they need to dumb the story down in the same way.
If Amazon has international streaming rights (or Sony holds onto those rights and is correspondingly generous in its deal with Amazon), this could make business sense.
Seriously why isn’t Harry’s law getting any love? It is the most commented post on your site.
Because it’s a better show than most of what’s been saved.
Ideally, I would prefer this go to cable, but any outlet to see these lovely ladies is fine by me.
And while most of the buzz around this show is international, I would assume Amazon had a good number of Americans puchasing episodes on their website for this to even be taken into consideration.
Amazon: get ‘Pan Am’! You’re audience will build. It’s a great show, great cast and good writers.
Cmon, take a chance!
Great news, I really hope Amazon picks the show up because it has the potential to be something much greater than it was on ABC. Plus, anything that means I can continue to see the lovely and talented Karine Vanasse in the role of Colette is obviously a good thing.
That damn well would put Amazon Studios on the map. Especially if they stay the hell OUT of it and let the creators do what they intended to do.
Can Amazon save GCB instead?
Pan am was a very good show. They were not given a fair amount of time to catch an audience. I hope they realize they need to give them another chance.
Save Pan Am!!!!!!
Pan Am always seemed like it should have been a cable show and aired straight through. I hope it works out. I’d enjoy seeing that cast of characters again.
Would love to see Pan Am return.
I got lost inside the world of Pan Am. This from someone who’s never watched a soap opera which is kind of what P A came across as to me. It was def a ‘guilty pleasrure’.
i think I may go to Amazon if they pick it up as one of their own…
Pan Am stank. And tanked. Let it die!
DITTO! Barely sat through the pilot-brutal, preening, and not worthy of not only Mad Men comparisons, but The Playboy Club, too! Let it die already!
Too bad you did NOT understand ther show, maybe you are just yoo young,eh?It was one of the very best shows i’ve seen, shame on you!!!
As I state beforehand, this was a good show BUT the storylines were all mixed up and confusing and the show had an identity crisis as to what it truly wanted to be in the long haul. Just get rid of Ricci and a few others and retweak the show to make it more nostalgic and about the airliner and not these goofy stories they had airing beforehand. Keep the show running smoother without interruptions and maybe we have something here and can still be saved, albeit if it’s on cable, satellite or Amazon but the writing needs to be better and more consistent and a better lead. The series/season finale was left as a way to continue the progress of the show but again, better scripts are needed if it is to survive once again, wherever it might air.
Bring back the show; the era was depicted perfectly. Nice change of scenery.
I think that the show Pan Am is a good one.
Yes Bring back Pan Am it’s a Great show. My wife and I were sad to see the show cut.
I liked the show, and I loved seeing Margot Robbie weekly, what a talented beauty! I think “Pan Am” would do well on cable or online because they will have the ability to make it sexier, and more interesting. I think this would be a smart move for Amazon!
