Al Pacino played hotshot salesman Ricky Roma in the killer 1992 film adaptation of David Mamet’s dark drama Glengarry Glen Ross, a role that earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Now the New York Times reports Pacino is returning to the play for a Broadway revival eyed for next year, but this time to play the sad-sack Shelly Levene, the salesman portrayed in the movie by Jack Lemmon. The casting would reunite Pacino with his The Merchant Of Venice stage director Daniel Sullivan, who is directing the new version of Mamet’s play. The searing drama about a flailing real-estate sales office — and featuring Mamet’s meaty dialogue — always has attracted top names: the original 1984 play won a Tony for Joe Mantegna as Roma, and Alan Alda and Liev Schreiber were nominated for a 2005 revival that Schreiber won for playing Roma.

Who will be Blake? Alec Baldwin is a tough act to follow.
I believe Mamet created the Blake character especially for Alec Baldwin. It was not in the original play. (Perhaps the stage version has been revised since then.)
Blake is not in the play. Mamet created that character for the film adaptation. And Baldwin kicked butt, totally agree. One of his best performances.
Pacino would be great as Shelley Levene. Levene is the heart and soul of that piece. Be interesting if they can get Baldwin to play Ricky Roma.
Sorry, that character’s not in the play.
Blake’s not in the play. He was a character created for the movie.
Blake isn’t in the Play. The part is only talked about in the show. It was added for the movie… So in other words no can follow Alec Baldwin.
That character is not in the play…
Thanks to all for pointing out Blake is not in the play. I did not know this.
Even without Baldwin, the Blake character is too interesting to omit in my opinion. Hope the new show somehow includes Blake.
I am going downtown to Mitch and Murray…to grab a ticket for this! Great play and I think Pacino would be great as Shelly.
I’m in Florida but will jump on the first plane to see this. Could you direct me to Mitch and Murray, maybe a phone number? I would so appreciate it. Many thanks in advance.
Shelly “The Machine” Levine.
He’s never replace old Jacky boy, but I’m sure it will be a noble effort. Would love to see Pacino’s take on this role. Can’t wait to see who will play Ricky Roma.
@FTCS – loved Baldwin, but that’s probably one of the most easiest roles to replace – there’s not much to Blake’s character. He’s basically a successful rich @sshole who’s watch cost more than you make in a year. It’s the other characters who have depth.
Agree, but in this case size does not matter…the role is a good one which I thought added great color to the film.
Steak Knives!!!!
FUCK THE MACHINE????!!!!!!
Saw Joe Montegna in this four times on Broadway and then with Peter Faulk in LA (no comparison)… Joe as Richie Roma is one for the ages — maybe the best stage performance I have ever seen — ever… He wasn’t bad in Speed the Plow, either… Madonna did better than her reviews suggested. Break a leg, Al.
For the record, Mantegna played Ricky Roma in L.A., too. (Peter Falk replaced Prosky in the role of “The Machine,” though.)
Agreed 100% with Chet; I saw Mantegna & Falk at the Henry Fonda Theatre in the 80′s, it was an amazing acting event. Levine is a great role for Pacino providing he doesn’t shout.
Why not Alec Baldwin for Ricky Roma? Merging the movie with the play is not a bad idea either and an unneeded excuse to see it again. One of the best Broadway experiences I have ever had. The Act 2 fade-out was forever memorable for me and the definition of theatrical. All those great Chicago character actors too.
