Deadline’s readers have been split from the beginning about the casting of Summit Entertainment’s Alex Cross, based on the James Patterson detective novels. It certainly is a jolt to see Tyler Perry and even Lost‘s Matthew Fox in dramatic-action tough-guy modes in this trailer, so it will be interesting to see whether audiences get past it when the whole film is released October 19.

Don’t cross Alex Cross or you will “Taste the Rainbow”! He brings Lautner-esque levels of credibility as an action hero, but he does come with a built in audience so…win?
Fail. This isn’t like putting Michael Keaton in Batman. Keaton has talent. All anyone sees when they look at him is a guy with an enormous head who normally wears lipstick and high heels.
Perry can’t act. He’s ridiculous in this trailer. When he tries to growl he sounds like he’s made at his pet poodle or something.
When he scowls he looks like his g-string is riding up his butt.
Audiences simply won’t buy it. Nobody can look at him without thinking that at some point there will be a fat-suit gag, or him swinging a purse at the bad guy. Perry as a tough guy is simply too much of a stretch.
There’s this thing called The Other 193 UN Member States. Some of them have cinemas. You might have heard of them and the concept of International Box Office. Movies now routinely make a truckload of money overseas.
(Almost) nobody in Europe will know who the hell the guy playing Cross is. All they’ll see if they read the books is someone who finally matches the age and physicality and if they don’t… they’ll see the dude from Lost looking crazy different.
As you said, other countries have cinemas too. We also have the internet and DVDs for the films that don’t make to the big screen. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person in Germany that’s heard of Tyler Perry and is familiar with his Madea character. Watching the trailer, I kept expecting to see him slap some sense into Matthew Fox’s character.
I know, right! He’s really trying to butch it up, but just not working. So disappointed they went with him for Cross. I liked those books.
Matthew isn’t playing Cross. Eric LaSalle is playing Cross. Check things first b4 you make your statement
This would make a great TV series starring Eric LaSalle
Holy crap! I love LeSalle.
What a great idea.
Moonves get on this right now.
NEEDZ MOAR CLICHES!
I love the AC series so I’m in either way. As for Tyler, he looks a bit glassy-eyed, almost like he’s on anti-depressives but it’s only a trailer. Guess I’ll just have to trust Rob Cohen for getting what he needed out of him. Fox looks menacing though.
“trust Rob Cohen”…. Ahhhh hahahahahahaha… Funniest statement I’ve read all week.
Seriously, Hollywood? Tyler Perry as Alex Cross? The chances of this one working were slim. And yet, the trailer is surprisingly solid. Perry does have charisma and comes across, well, Cross. Fox seems to be channeling himself. Looking forward to this pic.
Thanks Leo.
Your check and Madea DVD’s are on the way.
Took the words out of my mouth anon.
looks like a bad tv movie.
I love the character and I have read the books, inspired by the way how Morgan Freeman played him, so Alex Cross deserved a better destiny: Idris Elba, for example. Just my opinion.
TYLER PERRY as… Alex Cross-DRESSER.
How do you go from Idris Elba, who only does gritty dramas and whose movies have grossed hundreds of millions to the guy who plays Madea?
Whoever cast him should be blacklisted and all prints of this abomination burned.
This looks like crap and even a the fine cutting of the trailer cannot hide the lackluster perf from Perry. The one sentence lines delivered with no force, the flabby body and that ridiculous afro toupe.
This will be Perry’s third movei this year. Enough already.
The real tragedy here is that none of the up and comine black actors are thought of as good enough to do the role. Hollywood will take a chance on an unknown white actor (Taylor Kitch) but seems to insiste on a much higher level of achievement from Black actors, or they must bild their careers over time (e.g., Smith Washington). Anthony Mackie, La Alonzo. Michael Ealy, Michael Jai White, LL Cool J, Common, any of these men would have been preferable to Perry.
Looks good but it only has 6 executive producers and 6 producers. That’s not nearly enough nowadays you need at least 14 or 15.
damn, that reminds me so much of “Silence of the Lambs”
if “Silence of the Lambs” was a total piece of crap
shoulda gone with Idris.
Well, that seems to be a lot different Alex Cross than I remember Morgan Freeman playing…
Perry seems an odd choice for the role, but who am I to judge him branching out a bit. Looks a bit cliche, but might be interesting.
I don’t care if he’s too old and doesn’t have Terry’s “pull.” How much of his built-in audience is going to see something he doesn’t write, produce, or direct? Bring back Morgan Freeman.
I’ve never seen any of Tyler Perry’s films but this is a cool trailer.
wow – looks like a CBS Movie of the Week.
I was surprised at the lousy acting until I saw the card “From Rob Cohen”…there you have it.
The was nothing cool or commanding about Perry in the role.
I smell a hint of a turkey in the air…
Where’s Madea ? Isn’t this the movie where she’s on house arrest or in jail or being shot into space ? Idris Alba would have been awesome in this but he dropped out because he said Cross was too similar to Luther.
I don’t buy it. Fox looks great though.
Fox needed to let his bad boy out. Good for him. Tyler Perry, good for him. The story? Same old same old w/ fun effects. I got bored w/ the trailer because of the story, but not the acting. Just my thoughts…
Matthew Fox could you maybe be a little more over the top…oh wait…
Looks decent, but I’d say they lost at least a million in ticket sales by casting those 2.
I’ll wait until it airs on BET.
Probably be on there by this December.
After the guy shoots the rocket there’s some of the worst CGI I’ve ever seen. I mean, why do they even bother anymore?
If Tyler Perry has taught us one thing is that he can sell tickets…while completely failing to appeal to a wider demographic. I can respect the man’s reasons for not coming out of the closet but the idea that he now thinks he has the makings of a leading man are humorous. Rock Hudson he’s not. Perry’s best bet is to stay within the limited budget alleged comedies with his second rate Vicki Lawrence as ‘Mama’ Madea character
I’m glad to see Tyler Perry trying new things, but come on… This looks horrendous. JJ, I would love to see Vicki Lawrence come back and play Mama opposite Madea. Fantastic idea.
that BAD cgi explosion was funny. I agree this movie would have been awesome with idris elba.
