In greater and greater numbers, zombies continue to swarm not only movies and TV series–the Game of Thrones season finale the latest example–but have even been referenced in a number of actual recent gruesome crimes. Now, author and filmmaker Clive Barker is unleashing them on the Roman Empire. Amazon Studios has set the Hellraiser helmer to rewrite and direct Zombies vs. Gladiators. The studio, part of Amazon.com, is planning a film in which a shaman about to die in the Coliseum casts a spell that rouses history’s first wave of zombies. It’s up to a gladiator to stop the spread of the zombie horde and save Rome. Are you not entertained?
Zombies Vs. Gladiators becomes one of 16 film projects in development at Amazon since the division launched in November 2010 with a strategy that uses audience feedback and submissions to develop movie ideas. That led to the submission of 9000 film scripts and 1000 series pilot scripts. Hatching ideas with a pandering formula like that is risky, and so are movies that mash together genres. The last one to try was Cowboys & Aliens, and the real losers in that battle were DreamWorks (and backer Reliance), Universal and Relativity Media, all of which put money into a stiff. Still, an infusion of flesh eating zombies in ancient Rome certainly gives newfound vibrancy to Marc Antony’s famous line from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.”

Great joke. The auto 45 day rejection sucks. Unlike the Nicole fellowship you don,t have to pay to submit. But the 9 k submissions and the premise wars suck. The number of writing opportunities are scarce and now that they are courting big names it will become just like old Hollywood. Amazon oh Amazon, how could you.
Love Clive Barker and this feels like an great project for him. Can’t wait to see it!
Clive Barker was great 20 years ago.
This is crap.
Amateur hour crap. Great job, internets! Great job! Movies are so easy to make, aren’t they… !
“good taste” indeed… it’s called ZOMBIES VS. GLADIATORS, which I believe was the original title for Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” at the Globe, no?
Thanks for spoiling the finale of GOT!
Hard to “ruin” the finale of something that hasn’t even been WRITTEN yet, genius.
they mean the season finale, EINSTEIN.
This sounds horrible! Are you serious??? What is wrong with executives??
Just like the 1% who run the studios beat the shit out of the re-do, re-imagine, rerun, re-write, old movies into new and pretty much ‘killed it’ they will over produce Zombie Flics and kill it too. All they know is to take something that worked once, and do it over and over and over again.. Once again showing that the creative and corporate disconnect in Hollywood is getting wider and wider, just like corporate management and workers is getting wider and wider in every other industry. A perfect example is a cable company putting a cable executive in to run a movie studio..
The finale… of Game of Thrones. Maybe read the entire one sentence post before mocking the person who posted it, Sherlock.
The immortal Clive Barker… really?? Zombies v Gladiators? This sounds like a syfy movie. Hope that paycheck is fat enough
Amazon doesn’t mention the writer’s name anywhere in their press release… Wow.
Wait aaah minute here. Didn’t Woody Allen just do a movie about zombies in Rome??
Dear Amazon,
Seriously? Your entire approach is flawed, you guys have the money and the power to make decent movies and you are instead choosing to do something that is so obviously fucking derivative to the extreme, that you have immediately defined the Amazon “movie” brand as amateurish beyond belief. And, no, I’m not a writer. Really, guys, either strap up and find something with a scintilla of creativity, or get the fuck out of the business.
While the movie is not as original as Cowboys Vs Aliens, a good movie no matter how much hate Transformer loving fanboys want to admit, Zombies have been part of legend and myth since man could tell stories. Now incorporating them into a traditonal story concept will take a good writer but that goes without saying. Any story concept can be badly done with a crap script.
Yes, but you need an incredible script to overcome a shit idea. Why not start with a good idea?
Another movie title that sounds like a crackhead wrote it (which worked so well for CvA…)
Kudos to the original screenwriters, Greg Ostrin & Michael Weiss!
