Nostalgic baby boomers will like this new movie and TV licensing deal with Metro-Golydwn-Mayer Studios. It will enable Amazon Prime customers to stream the late 1980s TV series thirtysomething — as well as Baby Boom, the 1987 film starring Diane Keaton. The Prime Instant Video package also will include MGM’s hit films Silence of the Lambs, Dances with Wolves, Rain Man, The Good The Bad And The Ugly, and The Terminator. TV series include Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, Dead Like Me, and The Pink Panther Show. The companies didn’t disclose much else about the terms, including how much Amazon will pay and how long the agreement runs. “MGM offers one of the most distinguished catalogs in all of Hollywood, and this deal will bring Prime Instant Video customers hundreds of new titles to enjoy on their Kindle Fire or any device compatible with Amazon Instant Video,” says Brad Beale, director of digital video content acquisition for Amazon. Prime Instant Video now includes more than 18,000 movies and TV episodes.

Why do I still have Netflix? Their streaming selection is stale and contains nothing newer than two years old. They aren’t keeping up with the competition. If Apple starts offering cable channels as apps (HBOGo) without the cable subscription requirement I’ll be changing up both my cable and Netflix. In the meantime Amazon is becoming a more and more compelling short term alternative.
If you look at what Netflix has done, they have basically said, “hey, we do not need movies to succeed” and as a result they are becoming a streamer focused on serialized television programming. That might be what you are seeing as I have heard the argument over and over again that the streamer has essentially ‘nothing’ by people who tend to watch more CBS-fare and utilize RedBox/VoD options.
I can name a dozne movies off-hand on Netflix from the last year, easy. Amazon has none as new without paying extra. And most of the movies/shows in the announcement are already on Netflix. Facts are funny things.

Don’t plan on getting rid of cable anytime soon then.
While I like Amazon’s Streaming service, the fact that it can’t connect through a television makes it useless to me in the long run.
You can get it on a Roku player.
Buggy as heck on the Roku though. You watch one trailer, and you have to exit the app and start it again in order for it to play more. Annoying.
Actually, you can stream Amazon’s service through Roku, the Xbox 360, PS3, and several web enabled TVs.
I’ve been pretty pleased with the Amazon Instant experience through my GoogleTV.
I like my Roku, lots of good content providers like Netflix and smaller ones like SpiritClips, which shows good family films and shorts.
