EXCLUSIVE: Hoyts Distribution, which handles The Twilight Saga franchise in Australia, is on the market. Private equity firm Pacific Equity Partners, which bought the Hoyts group for $A440M in 2007, is anxious to sell before the final installment Breaking Dawn Part 2 opens in November. PEP in 2010 flagged its intention to unload the entire group that was once owned by Kerry Packer and includes the second-largest cinema chain in Australia and New Zealand and a screen advertising business, but nothing came of it. Headed by Robert Slaviero, Hoyts Distribution has amassed a sizable library since it launched in 2001 and one rival distributor estimates the division’s worth at about $40M. PEP and Hoyts execs made presentations to potential buyers at the Cannes market. The sale has ramifications for U.S. suppliers as Hoyts has contracted to release a bunch of titles through 2013 including Killing Them Softly, Alex Cross, Robosapien: Rebooted 3D, The Impossible, The Sweeney, The Host, Broken City, Thunder Run 3D and Necromancer.

if lionsgate took it they’d have all english speaking areas covered
It was successfully expanded from a boutique by Peter Ivany in the 80′s-90′s, but the word is that since then, and particularly in the last few years, the exhibition arm of the business is in trouble.
Its main assets/infrastructure was been under-capitalized in dreading the cost of digital.
Likewise, its operations management team at cinemas is known to be troubled.
That said, a new breath of life may invigorate it.
The distribution part of the company has no relationship with the exhibition/operations at the cinema, don’t mislead with ill informed opinions
Slav is one of the best in the biz, they’ve got a good operation and a good team, let’s hope someone buys with an eye towards expansion
Without Twilight there would barely be a business. Maybe a library play at best.
As an Australian filmy writer, I can honestly say that without Twilight I wouldn’t even be aware of their existence. They don’t seem to ever release anything with any broad appeal. Killing Them Softly is an interesting name in the mix though.
