As of today, Marvel’s The Avengers is #3 domestically, #4 internationally, and #3 globally in terms of worldwide box office. And the Disney film still is yet to open in Japan, which takes place on August 17th. Right now its gross is $1.438B. But today the mega-hit superhero assembly crosses $600M at the domestic box office, which surpasses the original 2D domestic run of the Fox/Paramount co-venture Titanic ($600,788,188) and was the 2nd highest grossing domestic film in history. Of course none of these figures are adjusted for inflation and higher ticket prices and 3D premiums. What’s even more incredible is that the pic is still solidly in the Top 10 domestically after opening the first week in May. Congrats, Joss Whedon and cast.

Still to open in Japan… I don’t get it. Is there a reason why such an important market often gets films very late?
I read there was something specific in Japan. It was best window where it didn’t clash with a whole series of things such as Dark Knight Rises and the Olympics.
Japan is good for at least 100 million…
Actually–Marvel films have not played even close to that number in Japan. My guess is more in the 9-13 m range.
Congrats indeed. Now here’s hoping Iron Man 3 is just as good.
Cameron was smart to re-release Titanic!
But it’s so odd to think back before The Avengers came out how some people figured it wouldn’t even make what Iron Man and Iron Man 2 did.
Not that I think anybody would have forecast this level of popularity.
John Carter…The Avengers…Brave…The Lone Ranger*….the two successful films are from acquisitions…the losers are Disney’s alone.
* The Lone Ranger is a WAG (wild ass guess) prediction.
John Carter was sabotaged by atrociously bad marketing (and a miscast lead). I wouldn’t write off The Lone Ranger at this point – could be another goofy, wild, POTC type hit, especially overseas, with Depp’s huge global fanbase.
Hey Scifi-fan,
Right at this moment in time, would you bet 250 Million plus prints and advertising on Depp (probably big back end deals with Depp and Verbinski) and Bruckheimer) on The Lone Ranger. Yes, it might have a similar feel to POTC, but is that enough to make you feel comfortable…at this moment in time?
And, maybe, Carter would have done better with a decent marketing campaign…if so, not much.
Point is the Disney Studio has lots of baggage. In two years under Alan Horn’s direction, this should change dramatically for the better.
Two words… DARK SHADOWS.
The Lone Ranger should be shot in Utah Monument Valley or thereabouts. It’s a damn western and doesn’t need crazy special effects and a budget of 200 million plus. What are they going to do..build a spaceship?…It should be done as a serious, gritty, action packed movie with strong characters as all the great westerns had..and that was their success.Arme Hammer is totally miscast as the Ranger..need a square-jawed deep voiced actor with serious gravitas. If he hadn’t blown Batman 4 Cooney would have been a good choice. Just look at the 1956 Lone Ranger movie for insight and just alter the movie and character and give him more edge for today’s audience.Hollywood blew it with Clinton Spillbury and that version..get a strong director with a love of westerns and let him do the job.
All the haters that said this movie looked like a complete mess are eating major crow by way of their sudden silence on the message boards. The only sad thing to come from the Avengers is that this summer as already peaked!
I still believe it is a mess of a movie. The success it’s getting makes me laugh so badly. Congrats to Joss Whedon and his team, though.
It’s a great mess alright, the AVENGERS was fantastic and epic. Why was you laughing so badly, what was you doing looking in the mirror, LMAO.
Very happy for Joss Whedon, he’s been creating amazing films and TV series his entire career. It’s been a long time coming and he deserves it.
The Avengers was boring. Very boring. Not one real human emotion in the whole film.
Very boring with no real human emotion huh? You mean like your meaningless post, haha. Obviously me and you we’re watching a whole different film.
This is an extraordinary achievement. What’s even crazier is that the next Avengers movie will probably top this one at the box office, given how much audiences really enjoyed it. They are hungry for more. It could be the first $200 million opening weekend we ever see!
Wow…
Oops, sorry, meant $250 million opening weekend!
Agreed, although Avatar 2 could make a go at $250m, if it comes out first which I doubt.
I don’t believe AVATAR 2 would be able to accomplish that, for one it will open in December, films that open this late in the year never have huge box office opening numbers like this, they tend to have stronger legs at the box office and run longer.
Yes, Hollywood is amazed that crowds have flocked to a fast-paced, witty, colorful adventure movie starring fun, beloved hero-characters that many Americans remember from their childhoods! Featuring talented actors! Who could have imagined that would happen?
Lots of Americans are starving for entertainment that isn’t gory, depressing, hostile, or porn.
Agreed, very good points.
Re: Lone Ranger,
Another caricature clown performance by Depp, yay! Let’s see, in the last decade we have…
POTC 1
POTC 2
POTC 3
POTC 4
Alice in Wonderland
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Dark Shadows
Sweeney Todd
His best movie of the last 10 years was Finding Neverland. Don’t get me wrong, no one can do ‘strange’ better than Depp but I want more of ‘normal’ Depp. The makeup laden clown act is tiring.
The public doesn’t want the “normal” Depp, just look at the movies he’s been in, which ones were hits, which ones were misses. It might be tiring to you but money talks. 5 of his hits were Disney, Depp+Disney=$$$$ and that’s the only thing that matters.
I can’t wait for The Lone Ranger.
I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, but I think the real reason for it’s meteoric success is that it was the first film combined several super heroes from different franchises. If you want that from a movie, you have no other options to choose from.
In the next 5 years we’ll most likely have a decent variety, if not a glut, of team-up films to choose from, and the flaws in this movie will be a lot more evident.
Of course you wanted that from this movie, hell it’s about superheros teaming up together man, duh. And every film has some kind of flaws, even great ones like this, so what’s you’re point?
No Orlando, the really great films have no flaws, you just haven’t seen them.
The AVENGERS might not be absolutely flawless(damn close though), but it’s still a great film.
It just goes to show you what happens when you make a film that appeals to all demographics. I would be lying if i said i predicted this level of success for the AVENGERS, which it more than deserves. I thought it could reach between 375-425 million domestically and around 800-900 million globally, boy was i off. 600 million and counting and well over 1.4 billion with Japan left to open, it will probally end around 1.6 billion worldwide. Rather you love the AVENGERS like i do or don’t like it, i think it’s one thing we can all agree on, not one film will touch these kind of numbers this year.
Lotta Debbie Downers in this thread. Great movie, happy audience, desired result and then some. End of story.
For those of us who grew up seeing the bare-bones “cartoons” of the Marvel superheroes after school in the early 1970s, it’s amazing to think that a movie about the Avengers is going to sell about 165 million tickets worldwide (that’s $1.5 billion at a average ticket price of $9.09, to be conservative). And with more to come in Avengers 2 and 3, not to mention the next 5 stand-alone Marvel films…
Those number of tickets you predicted to sell could reach upwards of 175-180 million because the AVENGERS has yet to open in one of the top 3 box office markets in the world, Japan. I’m thinking when the smoke clears AVENGERS might reach up to or near 1.6 billion worldwide.
I’ve loved watching Joss’s growth as an entertainer and storyteller. This is well deserved recognition for years of good work.
