Barbara Walters secured the first exclusive American TV interview with Syria president Bashar al-Assad back in December as that nation’s internal strife began to bubble over. Now she has issued an apology after a string of emails surfaced that showed the ABC News icon later attempted to use her influence to gain favor’s for one of Assad’s closest aides, the 22-year-old daughter of Syria’s UN ambassador. According to the UK’s Telegraph, Sheherazad Jaafari, who the New York Times reports Walters said helped secure the Assad interview, stayed in close contact with Walters afterward, and she allegedly asked The View co-host for a job at ABC News. Walters told her that was a conflict, but later she offered to help by sending her resume to Piers Morgan’s show at CNN and reaching out to Columbia School of Journalism professor Richard Wald, the father of Morgan’s CNN executive producer Jonathan Wald. After asking if there was “anything you can do to help” Jaafari gain entrance to the university, the elder Wald replied that he would get the admissions office to “give her special attention”, according to the Telegraph.
Jaafari didn’t get the Piers Morgan gig and Wald ultimately didn’t intervene on her behalf at the university. Still, after the emails between Walters and Jaafari were made public by a Syrian opposition group, Walters issued a statement today admitting an error in judgment: “In the aftermath [of the Assad interview], Ms Jaafari returned to the US and contacted me looking for a job. I told her that was a serious conflict of interest and that we would not hire her. I did offer to mention her to contacts at another media organisation and in academia, though she didn’t get a job or into school. In retrospect, I realise that this created a conflict and I regret that.”

Shocker, but that is how the world works.
Exactly!
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ + ratings + favors… nothing’s changed.
Where’s the impropriety if she already got the interview? Kinda nice that she still showed gratitude after she already got what she wanted.
Anon: it was very likely quid pro quo in exchange for being granted the interview to begin with. Not that anyone considers Walters to be a truly elite journalist anyway. Let’s be honest– she gained fame primarily from softball celebrity interviews.
I highly recommend you read up on your facts. Barbara Walters has a rich history in journalism. All this cream buff stuff started later in here life. I am not a big fan of Barbara but I give credit where its do.
Thanks,
Greg
Who cares?! That’s how it works. You scratch my back, I scratch yours.
Real journalists are not supposed to do this sort of thing. Unfortunately, ABC News has been known to blur the lines to get interviews. And yes, even after the fact it is a conflict of interest. Journalists know they don’t even want to give the appearance of doing tit-for-tat interviews. (Even the Syrian opposition recognizes that.)
Barbara could have been suspended, and frankly, probably should have, and she knows it. It would certainly put the fear of God in any other lesser reporters who think they can get away with know journalistic ethics violations.
Ah! The 1% certainly do live charmed lives.
Walters should be fired. Period.
I give Barbara the benefit of the doubt if you look at her career, she’s been very strict on this kind of stuff. I think she was just trying to help someone she befriended. Hiring her at ABC would have been a huge conflict of interest. Making calls – its a conflict but not the same. I think its a brief lapse in judgement.
Barbara Walters has been “very strict”? You gotta be kidding. This whole incident shows that she isn’t strict when it comes to “this kind of stuff.” It’s a complete conflict, and she should have known this after working in the business for all these years. Man, the excuses people make are just amazing. No wonder journalism in this country has gone downhill.
Barbara Walters is one of the best examples that hard work pays off. At 80 (something) she works harder than most people half her age. She’s too smart to create a conflict. Politics got in the way.
Barbara needs to retire. Even her VIEW co-hosts can not stand her which is evident every time she joins them. They come across so happy when she’s not there – its hysterical.
