BREAKING… Universal just announced that it is moving The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner off its August 3rd release date to August 10 to get out of the way of both Sony’s Total Recall and Warner Bros/Legendary’s The Dark Knight Rises. In addition, the studio says it also wants to take advantage of an
extra week of London Summer Olympics promotion. But the studio insists this move has “nothing” to do with some recent reshoots starring Renner who’s introducing a new character in what used to be Matt Damon’s signature action franchise. Deadline learned that, with less than two months until its release according to crew sheets, the pic reshoots went from June 8th to 14th in Vancouver. Director Tony Gilroy, who wrote the screenplays for the first three Bourne films and this one, wasn’t on location. But second unit director and stunt coordinator Dan Bradley was helming the reshoots which Universal keeps insisting were merely “two days of pickups. There was one shot that we needed to get. It was a beat. It was nothing.” Bradley was also a second unit director and stunt coordinator on 2007’s Bourne Ultimatum.
Word is screenings have gone very well for the reworked fourth film in the hugely successful espionage franchise that has earned almost $1B at the
global box office. But this is the first pic not starring Damon as Jason Bourne so there is understandable anxiety within Universal about the pic’s prospects. Renner plays CIA agent Aaron Cross in the film, which also stars Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz. Today’s announcement reflects what my insiders say is primarily a response to exhibitor complaints about The Bourne Legacy and Total Recall releasing on the same August 3rd date. ”Exhibition has been lamenting for a while that it doesn’t make any sense,” an exec tells me. Moving to August 10th also gives The Bourne Legacy an extra week to get out from the under the tsunami effect of The Dark Knight Rises which should perform like The Avengers already did in May. Uni’s Battleship almost sunk as a result. ”Look what happened with Avengers,” an exec reminds me. “One extra week makes a world of sense.”
In addition, NBCUniversal with all its Comcast subsidiaries and synergies is televising the London Olympics. So the movie studio thought it more strategic “to take advantage of a second week of inventory” for The Bourne Legacy.
Here is Universal’s official explanation:
“Just as The Avengers demonstrated marketplace sustainability that well outpaced traditional patterns earlier this summer, the industry expects a similar trajectory for The Dark Knight Rises. Moving one week further from its release will give The Bourne Legacy an even greater opportunity to maximize its opening box office potential. Moving to August 10 will also allow us to extend valuable promotion for the film across all NBCUniversal platforms during the Olympics, which will dominate television and digital audiences beginning July 27. We are excited about this new chapter in our Bourne franchise and confident that August 10 is the right date for our film and for our industry as a whole.”

Blink! Smart move though. No reason why Total Recall and Bourne should have been scheduled for the same day. I for one am looking forward to both films.
They should delay it until March 2013 to add 3-D.
Sorry we own March 2013 our G.I. Joe is going to rule the box office.
We need Channing Tatum to come down and shoot some pick up shots. It won’t take to long. Only like 3 months of pick up shots.
It makes sense. Total Recall and the Bourne Legacy would be going after the same audience more or less in addition to having to dealw with the Dark Knight. At least by moving back a week, Bourne Legacy will have a much better chance.
WOW, one week delay! There is genius piece of marketing. Do you think one week will save the franchise?
Have you seen the trailers for this? After the first three films I love how creative and clever they are in introducing someone other than Matt Damon into the series. A character in the film utters the words, “There was never just one.” Brilliant!
If you’re going to push it back, PUSH IT BACK. That’s not enough time to dodge TDKR.
Many won’t watch TDKR until the 10th and others will be watching it again for the 2nd and 3rd time.
What he said.
Very smart move. Better to move than get run over by Dark Knight.
Unless DARK KNIGHT tanks big time (is it even possible?). Remember when the last one first opened, people were mocking it as 300 explosions plus Batman and the Joker. Then sympathy for Heath kicked in. This movie just has itself and Anne Hathaway. I would have left BOURNE in place and risked it. Jeremy Renner is a fine actor, but he looks like everybody’s dad’s drinking buddy, hardly an action star.
Say what now? Once the first trailer for TDK hit in December 2007, interest for TDK was sky-high and Ledger was being touted as an Oscar candidate DURING filming. TDK managed to completely steal the spotlight from Iron Man during what was supposed to be its day at Comic Con in 2007 – without even being present at the convention officially. TDK had insane amounts of buzz well before Ledger died. It certainly helped, but you’d have to be an idiot to underplay the power of the Batman franchise.
This is a series that has taken the opening weekend record FOUR TIMES. Add to that the cult of Nolan and the good possibility that it’s actually a good movie and you have a behemoth steamrolling everything in its path for a month or more, just like The Avengers (but without 3D, so chances are ending up lower).
True. And that’s a big deal with franchise, because as we all know, Matt Damon only got the Bourne role because of the multiple action franchises HE’D already headlined.
Panning a film for not being trope-driven and copycat enough is an unfortunate habit on these boards.
Umm The Dark KNight Rises is already being called a masterpiece and has sold out almost everywhere…..So it will be the experience of a lifetime
“Remember when the last one first opened, people were mocking it as 300 explosions plus Batman and the Joker.”
This is wrong, and you should feel ashamed about your ignorance.
Here, google this quote:
“Oh look, it’s America, the nation of 11-year-old fat kids who lack the intellectual capacity to process anything beyond comic books. Have you heard about the greatest work of cinematic art in history, 300 Explosions With Batman and Joker? It’s the most “mature” of this year’s crop of 500 fucking movies about comic books, according to Critics who haven’t seen a film made for grownups since about 1978, when the last ones were produced.”
Actually, despite your comment, you are still a dunce.
“Here, google this quote”
I did, and it was written well after the film was released. You suggested that the film was mocked, and then then Ledger sympathy kicked in, whereas this piece was written as a snipe against the praise and acclaim that the film received. See how your logic doesn’t make a lick of sense?
Good call, this one deserves to be a hit and at least be seen. I have no idea what they are thinking on the scheduling of Total Recall though!
If it stinks on August 3rd, it’ll still stink on August 10th
It’s not really about stinking, though, is it? Hellboy 2 was a very fun, genuinely good movie. It got pulverized by The Dark Knight once it opened.
What they’re doing makes sense, especially if it’s a good movie – why not maximize its chances? Let Total Recall, which lacks buzz and could very well flop even without the shadow of the bat on it, get hit first, then present the first GOOD action movie alternative to TDKR in a month.
I wonder if this will weaken the opening of Expendables 2, since there will now be two consecutive action film opening weekends prior to its release on the 17th.
Why the move? I was more excited about Bourne Legacy than Total Recall.
What red said above about sacrificing the weaker film….
good idea,it made no sense that these two movies would open on the same day
Renner was a terrible choice. No one wants to see him.
Speak for yourself. I’m glad for Renner’s latest success. I remember him in “Angel” and his guest role in “CSI”; and then he came with his excellent performance in “Dahmer”. He’s talented, wise, charismatic and even sexy -At least for me
-.
Renner is certainly going to win this year’s “Actor who is being most relentlessly shoved down moviegoer’s throats” award.
Move over, Ryan Reynolds.
Hey, I do! >:(
It was stupid for it to be on the same weekend as total recall and I’m glad that someone moved — there’s no reason that two action movies after the same audience should go head to head. I wish that more studios had done something about the cluster-**** of June 29th with 4 movies opening — at one time two channing tatum movies opening on the same day. It makes zero sense when there is nothing for the next two weekends except spiderman and ice age where at least one of those movies could have moved to. I mean I really hope that people find PEOPLE LIKE US.
Without Damon – the film will be lucky to break even.
MarkLouis: you clearly know nothing about movies, storytelling, pop culture, life in general, and internet comment sections. Troll elsewhere, you’re worthless. Cheers, Paul
It seems like studios try to make all of their money in the first two weeks. Any longer and too many people get a clue the movie sucks. Get in… Get out… Get it on DVD!
If a movie is good, have the confidence to leave it in theaters for positive word of mouth to help your marketing draw an audience.
That’s because they DO make most of their money in the first two weeks, due to the sliding scale format used for revenue split with the exhibitors.
They get close to 90% of the opening weekend take and 80% of the second weekend. So if a movie makes 300 million in its first two weeks, the studio gets 250 million or thereabout. Of course they won’t refuse a movie that keeps making money a month into its run, but the way the cinema-going experience has changed, with more and more people rushing out OW, with midnights basically accounting for an extra day for the huge releases, and the way the revenue is split, studios are in the opening weekend era. It’s what matters most.
sandwiched in between TOTAL RECALL & EXPENDABLES 2 – really?
I am going to see The Dark Knight Rises, Total Recall, and Bourne no matter when they are released. I used to wonder why one movie, no matter how big and successful, could really affect another. Then my father-in-law recently said “we’re not going to see (movie escapes me right now) tonight because of that Avengers crowds.”. I am now sure there are tons like him, that avoiding a crowd trumps seeing a movie he and my mother-in-law would want to see otherwise.
>you clearly know nothing about movies, storytelling, pop culture, life in general, and internet comment sections
I was following you up until your very last point. In fact, it seems I know how to reply to specific posts somewhat better than you do. But beyond that “internet comment sections” over-reach, you’ve pretty much got me pegged.
“it seems I know how to reply to specific posts somewhat better than you do.”
Err … you didn’t even hit the reply button. Seriously, dude, what do you call someone who can’t even troll properly?
[sighs] My reply comment was an homage to the mess he made of his. Seriously, dude, this isn’t jazz but, like, give it a thought.
The franchise isn’t in trouble, but I didn’t think the films were A-list titles either. They were more a trio of car crash marathons with near endless, tiresome action. I won’t be seeing the next Bourne no matter when it’s released.
Its not the movies. Maybe it is. Distribution and theater owners want their cut. 13 combos. 8 popcorn. No air conditioning. in a depression they can pack them in only by cutting prices.
Shall I root for the sequel or for the remake? Is the sequel a reboot before the show gets the boot? Why not make a remake of a sequel?
As long as it’s not new, original content, we’re fine.
Not delayed to add more Channing?
I don’t remember anyone mocking TDK as 300 explosions plus batman and joker. In fact I remember everyone talking about how freaky and unforgettable Heath Ledger looked……BEFORE he died. The movie had an insane amount of buzz well before the tragedy thanks to both Heath and the strength of Begins. Foolish to bet against Rises. Smart move to push Bourne.
