Coming off its least-watched month in primetime in 20 years in May, CNN has taken another big ratings blow: The cable news network has registered to its lowest-rated quarter in primetime since 1991. For this year’s second quarter, CNN hit a low among total viewers and the key adults 25-54 demographic, with all primetime programs posting steep declines. The network averaged 446,000 total viewers and 129,000 in the 25-54 demo in primetime. Compared to last year’s second quarter, that’s down 35% and 41%, respectively. Rival Fox New Channel, meanwhile, with 1.79 million primetime total viewers on average, was down 1% from its 2011 second-quarter numbers. FNC lost 14% in the 25-54, bringing in 355,000 viewers. MSNBC was down 13% in total primetime viewers, with 689,000 on average, and down 17% in the 25-54 with 217,000. The quarter ran March 26-June 22.
Individually, CNN shows hemorrhaged viewers heavily compared with last year. Wolf Blitzer’s The Situation Room, which airs from 4-6 PM ET, was down 42% in 25-54 and 26% in total viewers. His show is expanding to three hours beginning Friday, taking over CNN’s recently cancelled John King U.S.A. At 7 PM, Erin Burnett OutFront, which debuted in October replacing a then-moving John King U.S.A., was down 45% in 25-54 from last year’s second quarter and down 33% in total viewers. Piers Morgan Tonight, which replaced Larry King Live in January 2011, was down 33% in the 25-54 and 29% in total viewers. Pulling double duty, Anderson Cooper took a double hit: Anderson Cooper 360 at 8 PM was down 23% in the 25-54 and 19% in total viewers, and its 10 PM airing was down 48% in the demo and 44% in viewers. The top-rated cable news shows for the second quarter were all FNC shows, with The O’Reilly Factor and Hannity sitting at No. 1 and No. 2.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

CNN needs some new talent and some new producers. Watching Blitzer shuffle around is getting pretty old! For producers to spend so much air time on a non story is ludicrous! And this doesn’t even get into the bad directing! CNN needs a make over!
CNN had a very interesting line up in 1990s with Larry King and Wolf Blitzer leading anchors. If Fox is such a hit for a long time CNN might look to its style and tone as an example of how to boost ratings.
I like Ted Turner’s manager style but its gone. Capitol Gang, Crossfire were two shows I miss to this day. They were and are top quality and could be revised.
I totally agree. Capital Gang and Crossfire were two shows I never missed, especially in an election year.
Crossfire was garbage. The reality is that the public doesn’t want straight news. Look at the decline of newspapers.
The public wants entertainment instead of news. If the Kardashians had a news show it would trump them all.
I beg CNN not to continue down the path of Fox “News.” Keep it classy and keep it honest instead.
And enough with all these spin/argument shows. Some find them entertaining obviously, but they are just reason why the public is so uninformed.
CNN isn’t straight news. Piers talks to Kardashians frequently with little in ratings to show for it and a large chunk of Anderson is infotainment. A problem with Anderson is he will tell you things are going bad in Syria for 45 minutes. Things are bad really bad! This is bad! He rarely explains the situation, players, ect. and doesn’t seem to understand it. Rarely has someone spoke so much with so little as Anderson Cooper. I can’t take 45 minutes of things are going BAD! You already said that 80 times Cooper.
CNN is just as left as MSNBC despite denials. They will knock Obama and quickly shift gears to how Romney is much worse on a story that was promoted about Obama being a flipflopper or coming up short on an issue.
Entertainment, possibly but more likely, as I do, I want to hear the story without editorializing or spin. But if I have to hear spin, at least give me BOTH sides spin and let me decide which to go with. CNN used to be a news channel, then it became an “opinion” channel and I don’t want their “opinion” about the world, I want the world news.
I don’t know who you are referring to as misinformed. Take the “real news challange” See how long you can go without CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CBS and either listen to Fox or Rush. Your eyes will be opened.
You’re wrong and misinformed, obviously a regular watcher of cnn. People don’t buy newpapers because of the internet and their not watching cnn because they do want to be informed.
Fox news is classy and honest. Try watching it and you’ll understand the terms “fair and balanced.”
CNN classy? Never was. Just more claptrap through a liberal filter.
Fox kicks ass from day one. The viewers know and they vote.
CNN began losing credibility during the Clinton administration and has continued its slide. As to newspapers, they decline for the same reason, a loss of credibility. As an example, our local paper, the Lexington Herald-Leader gives almost no coverage to “fast and furious” and the resulting contempt proceedings.
The decline of newspapers isnt because ppl don’t want straight news its because of e readers and television. They will attack either side nowadays if its news worthy. They have always leaned slightly to the left however. fox has always leaned more to the right.
I agree..I miss crossfire, and I mean the classic crossfire with Bradley and Buchanon. They need to find another RIGHT and LEFT duo like that again and let them go at it with a guest in the midde.
I can sum it up with Wolf Blitzer: GW Bush approval rating falls below 45 percent and he says it 38 times in 4 hours. When Obamas approval rating fell below 45 percent–he mentioned it 4 times passed to other stories where when it was Bush–it was a solid bash of Bush for the cycle. IF FOX IS 5 CLICKS TO THE RIGHT THEN BY THE SAME STANDARDS CNN IS 10-15 CLICKS TO THE LEFT. People see it and have flushed it. Once again liberalism fails when in the market place.
CNN’s problem is they have lost credibility as a truthful news source…they have been caught too many times spinning to the far left and now people have turned away. Go back to live feeds of events like the night Bagdad was bombed and 911…skip the editorial comment. People just want the truth without some talking head telling them what to think about anything happening.
Terrible programming, who every selected Piers Morgan should be fired. Repeat programming is old.
It’s the same all over the liberal media. They continue hiring the British because of their accents. The media moguls think the accent sounds more intelligent, more believable, more sophisticated. With me, it’s the moronic content they spew. They sound like educated idiots. Now there’s an oxymoron that fits!
I don’t miss either of those shows now..
Piers is a good interviewer but the Foxbabes and Social media has more pull
Totally agree I don’t miss either of them…
There is merit to what you suggest. However, I just don’t see CNN moving right of center. 41% of Americans consider themselves “conservative” or “very conservative” while 21% consider themselves “liberal” or “very liberal”. The other 36% are confused.
CNN, MSNBC and the three network news organizations are all chasing a shrinking pie. Murdock not only created an organization that catered to an audience his competition didn’t care about or listen to, he chose the segment that was and continues to grow.
There is room for competition on the right. CNN’s real value may be their infrastructure and household penetration, not their talent. Should a buyer pick them up cheaply enough and hire all new talent, they might have a long term future after all.
When MSM stopped reporting the facts and started reporting their opinions as fact is when they lost viewers. It’s a sad state of affairs when we as a nation are so blatantly being lied to and deceived by the bias MSM. Take their treatment of Ron Paul, they all but ignored him and when they weren’t ignoring him they were ridiculing him. They misrepresented his numbers and left him off all the charts of the candidates. When he was in second place they skipped to third and never mentioned him. Not all Americans are zombies we take great offence to deceit. The fact that they were so against Ron Paul’s message is apparent and relevant and has a direct relation to what they are now experiencing. MSA has an obvious corporate agenda. They refuse to report anything negative about Obama. This is unprecedented in American history. They don’t report on the slow dissolution of our constitutional rights under this administration it’s criminal. Americans have to turn to European news to find out what is going on in our own backyard. Thank God for the internet or we would all be uninformed zombies
I totally agree with you 100%, nothing more need be said!
This isn’t a style issue as much as the left would dearly love it to be.
Apparently the market for leftist propaganda isn’t all that large. And it’s already shared by all the other media not called Fox.
Make no mistake. Except for the evening news, Fox is an awful network. If there was anything else even remotely sensible, I’d go there.
Nailed it.
I agree. I think the market is wide open for another network.
Capital Gang and Crossfire. I liked those shows also. Both had conservative viewpoints as well as CNN liberal. Pat Buchanan is now, to put it politely, a mental disaster and Robert Novak is gone. They cannot go back to the old.
Don’t forget Inside Politics and CNN & Co, and good anchors like Donna Kelly.
I agree, I had forgotten about those shows, I loved crossfire primarily because you truly heard both sides of an issue. Frankly, todays CNN leans too left for me.
I totally agree, those were terrific shows. Nowadays you have Soledad O’Brien campaigning for Obama instead of being an impartial, objective journalist. MSM has led this country down a rabbit hole, and looks like viewers are not fooled anymore.
Sick of Soledad O’Brien – sick of Piers Morgan – sick of Anderson, Wolf and the whole “best team on television”. A tiny few conservative voices sprinkled into a huge pot of left-leaning drivelers simply apes what every other outlet but FNC is already doing.
If crossfire and the like were so good, why were they cancelled? Lake of viewership because of content maybe. you libs live in a fantasy world where everyone agrees with you and you get to tell everyone else what’s best for them… Your ideas are lame and lacking substance at best and the same old thing over and over again… it gets old and is not stimulating. You’d think you would be smart enough to look at your tripe and learn but again your blindness leads to your failure.
I listened to Larry King on the radio in Canada in the late 80′s. Callers would ask him what he thought about this new radio personality who was completely different from anyone they had heard. Larry would cut short the call. The new guy was Rush Limbaugh. People were amazed that he was saying things that were outrageous but that they knew were true. People were used to political discourse being a Sunday morning show with six liberals and a token conservative. Whenever the conservative tried to speak, he would get interrupted and drowned out. That was how the media covered politics. Now they had a guy who could speak his mind and didn’t get cut off because it was his show. Rush was a voice in the wilderness for a huge part of the population. They weren’t used to the truth. When Murdoch saw what a success Rush was , he started Fox News. The slogan “Fair and Balanced”. The viewers loved it and still do.
Those who have been listeners of Rush for 20+ years, like I have, feel that we know Rush almost like a brother. We appreciate his humor. We respect his judgement on issues such as he never endorses a primary candidate, for instance, because he wants to get full-bore behind the nominee to defeat the libs. We also respect his knowledge which he shares, for instance, of the workings of the major networks and such…with their pre-interviewing process and how that played a part in the responsed from Donald when they steered the Donald interview to “create” a birthers news story in an attempt to drown out Romney that same day that Romney gained enough delegates to win his nomination. Or how the networks work with the administration in the clear example of when Stephanopoulus came out of nowhere with the repeated questioning of Romney on the issues of states and contraception during the January debate. Rush gives us information that allows us to question and be more informed. Love the guy.
CNN has always sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CNN is only on at airports and hospital waiting rooms anymore.
since they can’t be impartial they deserve everything they get.
Good shows, I miss them.
But CNN’s problem is clearly one of supply and demand. There is too much left-leaning tv and a severe shortage of right-leaning tv. Foxnews is easily beaten. Just put out a set of shows that lean right (not as solidly right as fox) and any channel could clean up, more than doubling their ratings and eating up fox viewers. Fox isn’t that good, it just kills because they have no competition. This should be obvious to the execs.
You all just don’t get it, it’s not the “makeover” that CNN needs, its the content that most Americans find repulsive, not the presentation.
If CNN would consider journalism as opposed to the tabloid approach it does now , maybe more people would watch . As it is , last one out , turn out the lights .
CNN needs a different message… Not reporting on MAJOR news like Fast and Furious for 18 months is ridiculous. Fox was on it from day one. So for 18 months Fox stole their customers the wanted all of the news.
That’s the key point. When news breaks CNN should cover it, if not enough information is known when it breaks they should have investigative reporters try to get the story. Constantly reporting on what Lindsay Lohan is wearing or the latest insult spewed by a talking head who pretends to not be biased excites only those few extremists who like insulting the opposing ideology. CNN used to be a trusted name in news, now its just seen as MSDNC lite.
You are absolutely right,Chuck! CNN is satisfying itself, not the American people. Bad mistake in ignoring your audience. I feel it comes from them thinking they know more then the people.
More cowbell!
more cowbell, yes
you are on the money chuck
msdnc too funny
never see fast/furious on non fox media, kind of a sad commentary on the role of the press
can u imagine if the dems had the fairness doctrine, so hypocritical with the left leaning monopoly in the media, that makes fox and conservative radio the one percenters as regards truth in media and truth avoiders the 99%’ers
Try telling the truth. MSNBC can lie better and faster, so tell us the truth – we can take it.
Absolutely correct.
CNN doesn’t need a message at all. It needs to be what it started out to be. A news channel. Why do we need pundits to analyze the news for us? Why do we need a bunch of talking heads sitting around a fancy desk with shifting lights and backgrounds? Just give us the news. The REAL, uncensored news. I’m sick of all the fluff.
Best idea I’ve heard yet!!
cnn needs to bring Lynn Russell , just the news
agree. used to watch headline news because it was just that…. news. and Lynn was the best at presenting it. no overt spin, no fluff.
It is more than just not reporting stories. The problem is their left leaning tilt. They don’t tilt as much as MSNBC but they definitely lean left. That’s their problem, because MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS all lean left. They are all fighting over the same market. This is why Fox beats them by more than a million viewers. If CNN was actually interested in ratings then they would revamp to center-right.
I’d love to watch a competitor to Fox. Maybe CNN could even try to hire away some of the underrated Fox talent. Imagine prime time shows featuring Megan Kelley and Stephen Hayes.
I especially enjoy watching Kelley hand O’Reilly his head when she is on his show. I’m also not a big Hannity fan. I much rather watch Stephen Hayes.
Unfortunately I don’t think CNN is *really* interested in improving ratings.
The problem with CNN is that we know more about them than they know about their viewers. We know that all vote left, slander using the cue cards of the left, and report biased news. Nobody likes to be lied to at anytime, much less all the time.
You are right about CNN and its non reporting of big news stories. I always watched CNN but at work the the people would know and talk about things that I never heard about. So I asked how they heard about fast and furious, everyone laughed, and said FOX news. Now I am a FOX junkie.
They and others like them will keep losing viewers as long as they spin their stories. Americans want the truth and the whole story.
All the comments that relate to giving just the news and not giving your left leaning thoughts on the subject would be a great way for CNN to go.
I turn to CNN when I would like a different point of view than Fox and get so angry just listening to the snide remarks of your people, I can’t watch more than a minute or two. Yes, we need to hear the news and all of it, not just what will help the Dems the most.
Yep……their self-imposed situation has NOT crap to do with ‘style’, personalities, or production value……..but E V E R Y T H I N G to do with content, bias, confusing ‘reporting’ with commentary, and their raging unchecked liberalism and anti-Americanism!!
Well said !!!
funny how obvious: go where the customers are.
I get all my U.S. news from European newspapers. They cover most everything here. The English, French, German, Italian and also Russian newspapers are excellent. U.S. television news is boring to the max. To not cover F & F which is a far, far bigger debacle than Watergate, where no-one died, is an absolutely awful omission. Couple that with the mis-reporting that goes on and the inclusion of the news readers own views, in which no-one is interested and we have a completely redundant press reportage.
With social media now who needs them?
idiot
Are you joking? Fast and Furious has been widely reported on by every major cable channel and newspaper. We are all well aware of it.
You don’t think it is CNN’s lefty tilt? You know the bias toward the left and many times ignoring the opposite viewpoint.
Hey, CNN —– Wake up and smell the coffee. The American public is just not interested in what you are selling. We want, direct, truthful, UNBIASED reporting. MSNBC and, yes, FOX too, should take note that what is desired is straightforward reporting. Lose the clever antics (Hannity “football”) and smirkiness (Maddow) and please, just give the American public the straight story. We can determine the truthfulness of unbiased stories. Thank you.
You argue against yourself, Dale. Fox and to a lesser extent MSNBC are doing well because they do not give unbiased reporting. The American public is interested in what those two outlets are selling. CNN is more in the middle and are paying a price.
Not so. CNN used to play to the middle and has moved way farther to the left. That’s when I quit watching them altogether.
The only televisions tuned to CNN are located in airports, hospitals and waiting rooms across the country. You’ve seen them. So just how many actual viewers watch CNN? They should think about that statistic for a bit
I live in SW New Mexico and all the TV’s in our waiting rooms, even Department of Motor Vehicle, are on FOX.
andy, what planet are you from? msnbc has one if not the only truly biased reporting out there. if you want real ,fair and balanced news then you most certainly should watch fox news.
In a perfect world that would happen, this is all about controlling what people think.
What is the matter over there at CNN? They seem to be in a Dan Rather-type denial.
Maybe they can hire some real popular commentators like Aaron Brown and Kieth Olberman. Heck, check on Connie Chung. Good reliable HONEST reporters. Wink, wink !
Heh!
Aaron Brown was the best thing on CNN but they didn’t give him a chance and went for annoying self important Anderson Cooper and thus the dive began..
You would be surprised at the behind your back contempt held by Americans for European styled condescending socialist elite rhetoric and and how patently clear it comes through as an unmistakable “Holier than thou” arrogance. It is CNN’s main drool and they (CNN) are the last to know.
Maybe if they would start objectively reporting the news rather than spouting what the left leaning leaders are telling them to say, someone might listen.
I would rather sit and watch paint dry than be forced to watch CNN or MSNBC.
They are dreadful. There isn’t a decent show between them.
FOX isn’t all that great but, essentially, they are the only show in town that dares to bring in an alternative viewpoint.
For instance, that godawful racist, Jehmu Greene….she is so arrogant and smug and such a racist but, you know, at least FOX allows the opposing view.
CNN et al have nothing but disdain for the viewing public and they’re paying for it.
New Talent and New Producers??? The reason that the dinosaur mainstream media along with publications/website like NYT need injections in the form of Government Bailouts to stay afloat is because they “LIE”. They tell the sheeple whatever their government masters say.
You want news? You ain’t gonna find it there. Now go back to watching Real Housewives.
There’s a reason why independent media like Alex Jones & Russia Today are gaining ground everyday.
Russia today does a good job of reporting the news. If only they would not slant the story so far out of whack, it would be a major contender…..
As long as CNN and the rest of the LIBERAL news casts continue to cling to the liberal left they will never appeal to the majority.
Fox News may lean conservative but at least they have a liberal view point too.
maybe they should hire Judge Nepalotano…
Now that’s funny……..The Judge ain’t going anywhere
The Judge is my favorite; intelligent with common sense.
Maybe if they reported news and i mean real news, we would watch. instead they tell me what to think, how i should feel and who i should vote for. Instead i predict they will make some changes maybe a new set some new talent and they will continue to tell me what to think , how i should feel and who to vote for. next year at this time we will read the same article . I must go go breaking news into the situation room with wolf. Sara Palin was just spooted walking down the street with her daughter ! expert analisis from the panal coming up next
typical MBA think: his show is losing ratings so hey, let’s expand it to THREE hours ! Piers Morgan too limey for the larry king crowd.
Having been on the radio with my own show, I can honestly say that I could increase ratings 100 per cent by just being honest with the American people. Everyone is tired of left or right slanting of the facts.
This is good advise! What we need is a station that doesn’t lean right or left but just tells the news HONESTLY!!!!!!! Now wouldn’t that be different????? This could also help people not be so angry with both sides because they would be hearing the truth. I like Piers but he should be moved to daytime or early pm hours. Also you never know who he’s having on until you turn it on. The guest list should be advertised. It worked for Oprah and Ellen.
Content, content, content…. ‘nough said.
CNN will have to change ow
CNN will have to change ownership, before it’s ratings improve. What else can you expect when CNN’s parent, Liberal Time Warner, pushes a Liberal, biased agenda at all it’s holdings (Time, CNN, etc). There is not one right-leaning host on that network. Yet polls show that the majority of the population leans to the Right.
I bet the Boss voted himself a BIG raise.
Lies never work, wonder why?
I can’t believe people are saying CNN needs a makeover or new talent and producers. It doesn’t matter how the show is presented to the people. The network MUST TELL THE TRUTH TO THE VIEWERS WHEN THEY REPORT THE NEWS TO THE VIEWERS. This is why alternative media is the place to be today. It is the only place for a U.S. citizen to get the truth. So keep on telling lies like our president is a qualified to hold the office of the president when he was not born in this country as required by the Constitution. Keep ignoring the news worthy stories like U.S. citizens being detained without rights or warrants as defined in the NDAA. Tell the truth or leave peacefully.
So, why do you (or anyone) watch in the first place? Watch a channel that brings actual news.
I am a Tea Party conservative and Fox News regular, but I have to admit CNN’s news coverage, when straightforward, is very often better and more comprehesive than Fox’s. Also, I loved Crossfire. CNN should give us unbiased coverage in the strictly news shows and balanced, vigorous civilized debate in designated opinion shows. Keep them separate, each playing to the strengths we have seen in CNN Past.
I try to watch CNN once in a while but they just don’t have balance. Yes I lean right but when I watch its 6 to 1 barely right person. Erin Burnett is left wing but at least she lets our side state our case, so I watch her 2-3 times a week.
You (CNN) insulted me one to many times. You are one of a few channels that I won’t even “light” on your channel for fear you will receive my viewership! It appears there are a few others that feel the same way. I’d like to watch Erin Burnett if she wasn’t on your channel.
CNN’s demise began on the night in 1990 when former LA Times publisher Tom Johnson walked into the newsroom as the newly named network president. Ted Turner had transferred his interest in the network’s operation to Jane Fonda and Johnson. Coincidentally, CNN had a brief last hurrah during its coverage of Desert Storm. When that ended Johnson and Fonda set about dismantling the veteran anchor staff. Young new faces who didn’t know the difference between Cairo, Egypt and Cairo, Georgia, and who pronounced the name of the little Mexican dog as chee-hoo-uh, hoo-uh became the funny face of CNN. Then after the curtain descended on Johnson a terribly unqualified succession of presidents followed. And in the midst of all the turmoil and indecision Time Warner rested control from Turner. The network has been drifting like a ship without an oar ever since. It has crshed on the shoals mismanagement and is unlikely to ever reclaim a position of dominance.
Remember Piers Morgan said he would crush the competition. Well, here we are with him being crushed. He is arrogant and silly. To think he is going to come in and crush the competition shows he is just some high minded narcissist who thinks he has the goods when the only goods he has is in a can of beans.
Its not the messenger its the message. This has nothing to do who is the anchor, it’s the slant they have on it.
maybe they should hire rachel maddow and chris matthews, msnbc seems to be doing well with their far left format
how can you say they are doing well in their far left content, msnbc has the lowest ratings of all the networks currently on the air.
I don’t get my news from television. If I want to know what’s happening, I go online. But looking at these numbers, I have to laugh at all the Faux news people crowing. 1.79 million viewers in primetime?! None of these channels are doing numbers worth bragging about.
This comment will not be popular. There are too, too many women reporters on the payroll. The morning new shows are absolutely horrible. The most dynamic person is the weather man.
Time to start recruiting some dynamic men reporters. Experience always counts, hard core Mike Wallace types, classy Peter Jennings types. Well, you should get the idea.
Not watching CNN until they fix the problems.
Alas, the Mike wall aces and Jennings are a thing of the past. They have been replaced with a new generation of arrogant young anchors, picked on looks only,or god knows what other qualifications, or incredibly dull ones like Blitzer. Some of these anchors, their knowledge of the world and geoploitics is shaky at best, and any day of the week you can catch a typo at the bottom of the screen if you look long enough (none of the hundreds of cnn workers catch them before they get on the air, so you wonder about their education). Anyway, that was my rant..
CNN lost it during Katrina and the illustrious Wolf Blitzer said “they’re so BLACK” and no one saw fit o bring that up. CNN is just as leftist as it’s founder. This country is not left, it’s more right than center right and as long as networks like CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, BET, MTV, ESPN and the CARTOON NETWORK continue to broadcast things that go against the grain, they will continue to loose viewers, it’s like they’ve lost any sense of honesty and morality in themselves and are always looking for someone to be the victim of something. I do believe that all Liberals are racist, sexist homophobic biggots under the skin and you don’t have to dig too far under the skin to find it. Why? because they’re the only ones that keep bringing up things that are not there.
Fully agree. CNN was the most watched network. Now it is failing. Someone needs to ask themselves, Why? Cnn needs a real come-to-realization about their role. It is not slant/Bias and outright lies. It is about truth!
Paging Aaron Brown….
Agreed that Aaron Brown would be a great addition. I watched him regularly on the ABC overnight news in the 90′s when I was working a weird work schedule. Very good choice.
Who are you, AB’s agent?
If you are going to start rehiring previous fires, swinging right with Lou Dobbs makes more sense…
Lou Dobbs would never leave Fox news….he likes it there, other people from cnn have gone there too—John Roberts is another one, as well as John Stossel from ABC
Amen to Lou Dobbs! That was the ONLY CNN show I trusted. CNN is a propagandist joke. Did they think Americans were stupid?
They fired one of their best in Lou Dobbs. Bravo, Fox.
Who are you, AB’s agent?
If you are going to start rehiring previous fires, swinging right with Lou Dobbs makes more sense…
I agree with you concerning Aaron Brown. I always felt he was articulate and a great interviewer, as well as presenting international news on an objective level.
Time for CNN to get Aaron Brown back in the saddle.
Exactly! I quit watching after they let Aaron Brown go. Tried to watch Anderson Cooper but he didn’t carry real news.
Get Rid of Piers Morgan and replace him with Regis, that would be a step in the right direction. I like Anderson. I don’t know why people watch hannity or o’ reilly.
You don’t know why people watch O’Reilly and Hannity??? Can’t figure out why people are tuning out CNN??? It’s because of biased reporting and NOT reporting the truth. FOX gives the news … the REAL news … and gives people from BOTH sides the opportunity to sound off. CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS and ABC all lean left and the US citizens are tired of it, so they vote with their remote controls. I would be willing to bet that if you actually watched FOX for a week you would never go back to the main stream media. Those who complain the loudest have NEVER watched. Go figure.
Fox news will have a few people from the right and a few from the left, you get two different views. Most other news networks come from just the left.
This post is right on, I agree, most Americans are sick and tired seeing the propaganda that the other networks spew out. It’s depressing and unAmerican.
FOX is part of the mainstream media too. You are delusional. They don’t have folks from the left. They have people from the middle and far right.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t watch this crap CNN either. It’s so far to the left, I can hardly turn my head.
Fox has lots of lefties. ie. Lamont Hill and other lefties they bring in on topics. You must really be far left.
“JP” said the following:
“FOX is part of the mainstream media too. You are delusional. They don’t have folks from the left. They have people from the middle and far right”.
JP, congratulations! You’ve just demonstrated to this entire blog that you are either a liar, or a fool. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which.
“They don’t have folks from the left”? What about Alan Coombes, Bob Beckel, and a whole slew of lefty Fox News contributors and former DNC campaign personnel ready to jump in on any news issue. And there are many members of the “left” that have an ongoing invitation to visit Fox and state their position (unlike your MSM buddies), but will not.
As for “far right”, what on Fox meets that criteria? Hannity? He’s a journalist commentator on the right, but unlike the constant avalanche of lies that you hear from someone on the far left, he does a reasonable job of keeping it real. You haven’t seen any “far right” on Fox – if someone even BEGINS to state a conservative view on Fox, YOU think it’s “far right”.
I don’t care what you say about what you think is “crap”, but your comments show that you’re a progressive. There are NO “sides” to issues as far as you’re concerned: it’s YOUR POV, and nothing else.
Stay in your little world, “JP”. The country has had enough of this crap, and people like you.
AMEN!!! s. walton! i used to watch programs like msnbc and when i switched to fox it wasn’t long for me to realize who was giving me truthful news. FOX!!
Hey you – people watch O’Reilly because he is one of the few people who tell the truth in the least biased way….and he is entertaining as well. I agree that Piers Morgan should go, and Regis might just give Hannity a run for the money.
They don’t know why you watch CNN. Guess you’re just a loner.
Because they discuss relevant news – plain and simple
^^ What he said ^^
isn’t that the truth!……I watch fox cnn msn and fox is “fair/balanced”……msn has the very worst negatory people!
the relevant news here is that no one likes what they are reporting and they are disgusted with what they aren’t reporting.
@Anonymous, are you referring to Fox News?
Next time you post, try sticking to the truth. :-/
What are you talking about? You don’t seem to be sticking to the point. It’s a story about CNN hemorrhaging viewers. I realize some people look at Fox the way the anti-Semites look at Jews, meaning Fox ALWAYS has to be somehow at the bottom of anything bad, but you should probably keep your bigotry out of it.
Why do people watch Hannity and O’Reilly? Same reason people used to watch Olbermann. They enjoy what they have to say and discuss. It must pain you to realize there are so many conservative people out there.
I am a female, hispanic, independant – I watch O’reilly – Erin Out Front and Situation room (occassionally The Five)-never Hannity. Try to watch MSNBC but invariably end up frustrated at their misrepresentation of the truth- not even opinion, plain misrepresentation.
They watch Hannity and O’Reilly because they want to hear the truth on occasion instead of a steady stream of lies and liberal garbage that they get from CNN, MSNBC, et al.
People watch O’Reilly and Hannity maybe because they like hearing the truth once in a while? Not some liberal bias crap like the Ed Show? Al Sharpton?? Are you friggin’ serious?
Amen!!!
For the simple reason that we recognize when we are being lied to by the networks, and we do not like it.
Because they are not shills for the Obama Administration for starters. The list of all the good reasons is too long to post here.
most people watch oreilly and hannity why dont u?
Keith Olbermann is looking for something to do, and I don’t think he’s pissed off anyone at CNN…..yet.
CNN needs to bring back a Balanced Approach and talk panels.
I’m a Fox watcher and I can’t figure out why people watch Hannity either. I like O’Reilly about 50%.
I watch O’reilly because the factor is INTERESTING! Those who like to criticize based on MSNBC snippets taken out of context, should try watching it, then draw some conclusions.
Brad, think real hard and you will get it.
I watch mostly Fox, for all the reasons stated in these comments. However, as left as MSNBC is, Rachel Maddow is worth watching. She makes sensible arguments for the other side, most of the time.
Also agree, Pierce Morgan needs to go. No offense, he’s a likable guy, but doesn’t have a clue!!!
Get rid of the boring monotonous Wolf friggin Blitzer..do some edgy programming for gawds sake. and cam the holograms!
With a 24-hour news cycle now the norm, all the cable news outlets have evolved into what I feel is op-ed TV and no longer simply news presentations. So I’ve found myself reading (online & print) more than I watch cable TV news.
As for CNN, the times I do turn to this channel, it seems like it’s either American blowhards (Blitzer, Cafferty, etc) or a lot of foreign anchors (what is this, the BBC?) or especially worse, a foreign blowhard, Piers Morgan.
These are the CNN options? No thank you!
Right on. Online news for everything but local and then print. Tired of the TV news that is filtered when I can can multiple sources from Drudge and Google News.
You should save yourself time by only doing a report when CNN’s ratings increase.
Good one!
Sorkin is talking to you! CNN
MSNBC has the left, Fox News has the right. There is no more middle for CNN to get.
Yeah, the middle is a bore. And Piers Morgan does not help. How anyone can tolerate that asshat is beyond me.
Hilarious! Fox is left of center! Shep Smith is a raving hate-America Liberal.
Someone is exactly right about Shephard Smith being a crying, raving liberal. And this guy is supposed to represent “conservative” TV? No thanks.
Lighten up about Shephard Smith. He’s part of what makes Fox News so much better than CNN or MSNBC. Fox has on-air personalities who are left of center. And Shep Smith does a good job.
MSNBC and CNN having conservatives? No, not really.
We report, you decide!
MSNBC is the lunatic left, Fox is right of center (there’s plenty liberal on-air personalities at Fox) but CNN likes to pretend they are the center, when clearly they are left.
Nobody likes being lied to!
JustA, I think you nailed it down pretty well.
As for the old school broadcast news….
Think Titanic, and you’re in the last half of the movie.
PARTICULARLY NBC.
What’s sad is how much this is the truth. I’d like to think that there’s still a place for middle-of-the-road, old fashioned “news”. I guess the problem is that it’s just too boring compared to the battles on the other networks.
Despite occasional lapses, CNN is still a *generally* trustworthy source, and it still is the “go to” channel when some sort of major incident happens. It’s also the “non-controversial” news channel — unless you live in a echo-chamber dominated location, you typically won’t find MSNBC or Fox News Channel in a public environment (eg, a lobby somewhere that caters to a neutral crowd).
I think CNN really might just need a heavy make over, some more exciting anchors, trusted investigators, and a little bit of the healthy level-headedness that the old Headline News had.
Sure CNN is a *generally* trusted source as long as you recognize that it has the agenda to help the Democratic Party. Personally speaking, I don’t like being called a “tea bagger” by an anchor (Anderson) dislike Soldad O’Brian’s snarky attitude when it’s clear she doesn’t know what she’s talking about, and I absolutely hate Joy Baher’s with her low IQ, trashing conservatives. Fox gives me all of the news, unlike CNN who didn’t mention “Fast and Furious” until Holder was being threatened with contempt!
Why do you settle for half of the news, when you could learn both sides? As someone else said, they chose to make an enemy out of conservatives.
I agree.
Slightly over 30% of Fox viewers are on the Left. Fox does present both sides, although overall they are center-right.
People want, to borrow Fox’s motto, news that is “fair and balanced.”
Piers Morgan replaced Larry King. My opinion is that King’s ratings were falling not because viewers got tired of HIM, but because they got tired of the format. Doing softball interviews with Hollywood stars and other celebrities isn’t what people want anymore. They want real news and interviews with real movers and shakers. Bringing in a younger Larry King, with a British accent, doesn’t provide what viewers are looking for at that time of day.
CNN seems to cover the news that benefits the Dems or hurts the Reps. Fast and Furious is a good case in point. It’s huge news, and harmful to Dems, and so CNN hasn’t covered it as they would if a Rep president were in power.
CNN also needs center-right show hosts and to balance out their programming to appear more objective and show less favoritism to the Leftist/Marxist perspective on events.
agree.
clear your forehead and try to brighten up a littlwe
Correction:
Fox has the center, the right, and a surprising amount of the left.
They do a pretty good job of tracking their viewer demographics, and tune their programming appropriately.
No matter what anyone says about Fox, their viewership continues to grow.
I do think, however, it would be feasible for a center-focused news network to jump in as CNN and MSNBC slide into oblivion. No one thought Fox News would last, and CNN laughed the hardest at the newbie network.
I watched it almost from the beginning (I have this strange obsession with knowing the facts, the WHOLE story, and hate being lied to), and it’s no surprise that Fox is the 800 lb gorilla in the news room.
The ratings aren’t going to get any better until they get rid of all the dead weight on the network that doesn’t draw viewers (Soledad O’Brien, John King, Wolf Blitzer, Piers Morgan, Erin Burnett, etc).
For one thing, there were just one too many of Soledad’s “Pick-you-minority in America” for me!
The only way I see all this crap is to report the truth no matter what party you represent and run the government for the people ad was meant to be and get a real man to run for President as I would recommend Col. Allen West and regardless what you on the right or left this man will serve for the right of all Americans.
CNN is finished as a news channel. Needs a whole new format. Viewers are more interested in fiction and sitcoms.
While we are at it, how about getting rid of that same old tired bunch of talking heads? Oh, and maybe some real investigative journalists at the anchor instead of a bunch of teleprompter readers.
Suggestion to CNN: Watch Sorkin’s “The Newsroom”. What it wasn’t was boring, what is boring about CNN is listening to the same batch of news stories over and over in a half hour’s time, or watching the same people’s segments day in and out that are colored, always, by their own persona. You know the more of us than ever have the attention span of a gnat (which you might think is a good reason to run the same stories several times each hour but it’s not), so get innovative and above all get REAL. Listen to Jeff Daniels’ frustrated rant about the state of affairs…it might help you.
It is quite gratifying to see that CNN’s ‘Style over Substance’ mentality has fallen on its ass with a resounding THUD!
Where are Sybil the Soothsayer and Vox Populi when you need them…LOL.
CNN has made it very clear with its conscious, purposeful decision-making that it has no interest in viewers like me. It’s hostile territory for conservatives. They’ve made their bed.
I have been watching CNN from DAY ONE.
Question: Where has my beloved CNN gone?
Answer: It has gone down significantly and all in a negative way.
I miss:
Miles Obrien and his Space/Science segments.
Aaron Brown – so good.
Bernard Shaw and Judy Woodruff – Best in the business
Bobbi Battista
Leon Harris
Carol Lin
TJ Holmes
Larry King
Bill Hemmer – Mornings
Crossfire
Too much of:
Wolf Blitzer – Needs 1 hour show and more field reporting
John King – Get back to field reporting and covering the White House
Weekend Issues:
Give the weekend anchors a break with rotations of other anchors. Expand the staffing for the weekend schedule.
Fredricka Whitfield – A chance to do more Daytime anchoring and letting her have more weekends off. She has earned that and deserving of alternate weekends.
Don Lemon – More time out of the anchor chair doing special reports.
Randi Kaye – Doing well in TJ Holmes place in the AM weekend coverage. Also needs alternating weekends off.
What I would want:
Richard Quest – More on him nationally and expand his role.
The CNN International channel is doing great with all the things ongoing all over the world presently.
HLN is OK. A different approach, for sure. Miss Joy Behar’s show.
Fred Hickman and a Sports Hour like it used to be. Add this to the schedule.
A weather-themed one hour show with Chad Myers and the CNN weather team.
Anderson Cooper is fine. He does great field reporting as well as anchoring too. He has enough on his plate.
Yes, some shuffling around and tweaking and CNN could get back to their glory days. CNN is the best in Breaking News coverage, especially global Breaking News.
Come back CNN, come back.
You can still catch Bill Hemmer in the mornings. Just tune to Fox News. I like his style as well. I didn’t know he came from CNN. It seems many of the Fox News personalities originally worked at CNN or ABC (Bill O’Reilly, John Stossel for two examples).
If you don’t care for their opinion programming, just stop watching after 5pm. That’s when Shepherd Smith clearly states that “the news ends and the opinion begins”. I do think if you’d stick around for O’Reilly you’d find out he always has opinions from both sides of the isle.
Yeah I liked Leon Harris! He and his co-host were great together.
Also Miles O’Brien was great too. He actually researched things.
Soloded O’Brien, the O’Brien CNN kept, just makes me turn away.
It’s amazing that time warner choose’s to promote their liberal views over making money
CNN is doing so bad because FOX is doing so good. Check out FOX sometime; you’ll understand why.
Rather fox has the right, and everybody else gets a piece of the left…
Way to go CNN! You’ll get to the bottom of the pack sooner or later. Keep up the good work!
Is CNN still on?
HA!
The country is split almost evenly between the left and the right. Fox alone represents the right and enjoys half the spectrum all to itself. Meanwhile ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, PBS, and it goes on split the other half. No conservative i know will watch any of the latter, while every leftist I know swears up and down about the objectivity of those networks. Stuff like, “they’re not left, Bush really did suck”. Well he was elected twice, and the people that voted for him aren’t going to listen to a station that screams all day about how he sucks. Viewing habits were formed and people tend to be brand loyal.
If you lefties want to take a bite out of fox, lean to the right.
Or at least come back to the center. I think a new news network that had truly balanced reporting and didn’t avoid reporting things that liberals don’t want to hear would give Fox News a run for their money. I think Fox would enjoy some real competition frankly. That’s never going to happen though.
Has anybody researched why Fox is always ahead with all those people so hated by the left. O’Reilly, Hannity, Cavuto, etc. Cafferty should have gone years ago, Soledad O’Brien along with him. A complete overhaul may help but no guarantee.
CNN needs to get with the times. In 2008, the nation was moving left and CNN played to that message. Today, the opposite is true and CNN has not adapted. The problem is keeping talking heads that are too liberal for today’s audiences. I know, I know, they all say they will remain neutral, etc., but here and there viewers can see the liberal agendas coming out in fols like Erin Burnett and Wolf Bitzer, although I like Wolf who at least makes an effort to be neutral. John King and the rest of the crew are 2008 holdovers and stale for today’s market.
Stuck in the 90′s
Oh, CNN, by the way, while your at it, take the stupid ads off your videos…no one is watching
CNN and MSNBC are pathetic losers and will eventually fade away. However cable news is dropping overall because cable subscriptions are dropping. Why? Because cable programming is horrid and cable costs too much.
Boy ain’t that the truth. When the sex and violence is balanced with some programming depicting other situations you can find in life it will be worth the cost. I’d say that goes for the media in general. Let’s take the cultural quality up a few notches so we can put our money where quality entertainment and news can be found.
CNN is boring. They need to get some new blood in the newsroom. FOX and MSNBC have some great field reporters that would love a promotion. CNN has to live in a 24 hour news cycle and their reports have to be interesting enough to hold the viewer’s interest. Watching Don Lemon and Wolf Blitzer is akin to watching paint dry. It is painful.
Maybe CNN needs a little comedy in the news. How about Colbert and on a little earlier. Life is depressing and we need a little humor to help us through the week. Obviously, the remote works if you don’t like what or who is reporting.
It’s simple, hard news. FOX and MSNBC have a bunch of big mouth blowhards and so-called experts, which are experts in seemingly nothing except getting themselves on TV.
The press in this country is a joke nowadays. The only news channels I watch now are from overseas. Cover domestic and international news around the clock. Get rid of the talking heads, focus on corruption, the real issues that get no attention domestically, etc.
CNN tried to play to the so-called middle in-between FOX and MSNBC, but what they failed to realize in this was that on many issues, there aren’t two sides to every story and made a joke of themselves trying to force equal time for every side to a story. End the anchors injecting their moronic personal opinions, too.
There aren’t two sides to every story? You think that was CNN’s mistake– thinking there were two sides?
I am almost afraid to ask, but could you give some examples of which stories there are not two sides to, that CNN was trying to imply had two sides?
