Coming off its least-watched month in primetime in 20 years in May, CNN has taken another big ratings blow: The cable news network has registered to its lowest-rated quarter in primetime since 1991. For this year’s second quarter, CNN hit a low among total viewers and the key adults 25-54 demographic, with all primetime programs posting steep declines. The network averaged 446,000 total viewers and 129,000 in the 25-54 demo in primetime. Compared to last year’s second quarter, that’s down 35% and 41%, respectively. Rival Fox New Channel, meanwhile, with 1.79 million primetime total viewers on average, was down 1% from its 2011 second-quarter numbers. FNC lost 14% in the 25-54, bringing in 355,000 viewers. MSNBC was down 13% in total primetime viewers, with 689,000 on average, and down 17% in the 25-54 with 217,000. The quarter ran March 26-June 22.
Individually, CNN shows hemorrhaged viewers heavily compared with last year. Wolf Blitzer’s The Situation Room, which airs from 4-6 PM ET, was down 42% in 25-54 and 26% in total viewers. His show is expanding to three hours beginning Friday, taking over CNN’s recently cancelled John King U.S.A. At 7 PM, Erin Burnett OutFront, which debuted in October replacing a then-moving John King U.S.A., was down 45% in 25-54 from last year’s second quarter and down 33% in total viewers. Piers Morgan Tonight, which replaced Larry King Live in January 2011, was down 33% in the 25-54 and 29% in total viewers. Pulling double duty, Anderson Cooper took a double hit: Anderson Cooper 360 at 8 PM was down 23% in the 25-54 and 19% in total viewers, and its 10 PM airing was down 48% in the demo and 44% in viewers. The top-rated cable news shows for the second quarter were all FNC shows, with The O’Reilly Factor and Hannity sitting at No. 1 and No. 2.

Cnn hasn’t represented the middle in a long time, if ever. They’re only slightly more right than msnbc.
I agree MSNBC is hard left, Fox slants right but their news side is not hard right. Fox clearly states their shows starting with O’Reilly and later are opinion shows and not news. CNN, however, clearly has a liberal bias but is in a state of denial that it is biased. Just listen to Wolf et al and note their positive spin on anything Obama. Also I would like to know their ratings without the captive audience at airports. Traveling 5 times a month thru airports gives me migraines when I am stuck near a TV blaring CNN ad nauseum.
This is a surprise? FNC out performs CNN in prime time viewers 1,790,000 to 446,000. There aren’t enough lefties to increase their viewership LOL! Of course, there is not liberal bias in any of our “news” organizations.
MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, and CNN have the left. The only station that is different is Fox and they are destroying the competition. There is plenty of room remaining on the right. If CNN wants to increase ratings then maybe they should try out foxing someone.
a leopard is hardly capable of changing it’s spots
Still waiting for Soledad’s Po’ White Trash in America special.
Two theories. 1) CNN is liberal and liberals don’t watch news, or 2) CNN is out of touch. Fox is kicking butt. What is their formula? Real news and commentary.
It is pretty simple really… ALL news outlet’s in America cater to left leaning view’s. Some more left than others… MSNBC being the most extreme. But ALL others, except 1, MSM and cable channels are fighting for the same viewer. Their management teams and almost all of their journalist and commentator’s lean, think, vote and support left leaning Democrats and harass centerest and Blue Dog Democrats. And God forbid if one of them ever agrees with a Republican about anything at all… They make him/her pay.
They just need to do some market research like Murdock from Fox did when he came to America. I read an interview with him about why he positioned Fox as a center right company. He said he hire a market research company to study American Broadcasting companies for what their angle was and the American people for their political leanings. The report came back as the Press is left of center but… The majority of the people leaned slightly right of center. Some more right than others.
Murdock said it was obvious what the right thing to do was. Do what NOBODY else is doing and be Unique. That was about 15 years ago and Fox has been the #1 Cable News outlet for 12 years in a row and Bill O’Reilly was voted the most trusted man in news. They found a market that was much bigger than even Murdock thought it was. Regardless how all of the other channels lie about their coverage, they can’t compete with them.
Sometimes being a genius is only recognizing the obvious.
For CNN I suggest what they will teach in Marketing 101… If you can’t fight them and win, join them! It always works and you can’t get any worse than you are now.
What a nice guy I am to pass this obvious information on to CNN for no charge…
Spot on! Heck, I’d love to watch a competitor to Fox. Maybe CNN could even try to hire away some of the underrated Fox talent. Imagine prime time shows featuring Megan Kelley and Stephen Hayes.
I love watching Kelley hand O’Reilly his head we she is on his show. I’m also not a big Hannity fan. I much rather watch Stephen Hayes.
When you lose your credibility, what do you have left?
Maybe trying a little non-partisan and objective reporting might help, who knows.
Add Fareed Zakaria to the list that needs to get the boot.
What CNN needs to do is to change it’s name to CNN and reflect that name change on the air. CNN? Yeah, Conservative News Network.
The problem for CNN is that it began as the sole cable news network. Now there’s CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, HBO, PBS, etc. That is at least five networks fighting to be #1. And to top it off Ted Turner sold out for 20 pieces of silver.
So, instead of competing against five liberal networks, go “conservative” and take on FOX. There are as many conservatives who don’t like Oreilly and Hannity as like them. Why keep plowing fallow ground as CNN in now doing?
I don’t watch CNN, but have to when in the Airports. When I do
watch, I see the same old liberal political hacks being interviewed by Blitzer or others. When I hear the story lead in
by Blitzer is’t always framed in a positive light for the liberal
view. Let’s face it, CNN like NBC is essentially the “Liberal
Broadcast” network and they feel that playing this role will get them favored treatment when it comes to interviews and access.
The fact that people are not watching their shows tells you that
their message isn’t received that well with the public. With the
next Republican President in Washington I expect that Fox News will be the new “Presidential Network” making it just that much harder for CNN and NBC to be a force in the broadcast marketplace.
I think that FNC has a winning formula, like it or not.
Conservative radio and television works. Liberal based media usually either totally fails or lags far behind. I can’t tell you why, but the facts don’t lie.
I agree that MSNBC is far left. However, it is a mistake to think that CNN is fixed squarely in the middle between MSNBC and FNC. It would be accurate to say that CNN is center-left. A look at their line-up (ie. Cooper>”Teabaggers”)and it is fairly easy to see.
It is unfortunate that CNN has squandered their place as USA’s flagship media/news org. by not staying balanced and staking out the middle ground.
People are voting with their clicker. They are tired of being lied to by CNN, MSNBC and the Alphabet Networks. They are also tired of the list of caustic characters hired by these same networks.
I guess I’m an oddball. I watch cable news for news, not the personalities reporting it. When CNN gets back to presenting news (was always the best)I may return to the channel. Get rid of Pierce Morgan. When he’s interviewing someone with opposing political views to his he’s downright rude and all the viewer sees is his anger and bias. I put him in the same category as Ed S, Martin B, Larry O, Rachael M and the MSNBC gang of radicals. OReilly and Shawn aren’t much better on the right. The shows are just downright boring anymore. Best show ever was The Advocates on PBS. Bring back those shows who dug deeper into issues, devoting an entire hour or more to an issue
Fox News should pick up John King.
Want CNN to get better? Want CNN to get back viewers from Fox and MSNBC? Then help make CNN what it once was. The go to place for actual facts and news.
No more liberal bias. No more poser talk shows. No more talk shows with 3 liberals and 1 conservative that are called balanced.
Look at your opponents and see their weak spots CNN! FOX/MSNBC rarely cover any news story that doesn’t involve NY or DC, and when they do, its just to talk over some tape they bought from a local stringer or affiliate. Frankly, I would rather hear Coloradoans talk about the wild fires in the Rockies than some suit in front of a green screen in NYC. You have many more affiliates than Fox. Go native. Come to the occupied territories. Grasp that a guy in Colorado Springs is going to have a better and more interesting perspective on the wild fires there than some talking head on either of your opponents’s shows.
More local-based coverage of news from the whole country. More documentaries that cover a story from unique angles and from the starting point of a simple desire to tell the story accurately. Less liberal bias. Much less.
If I were to run CNN, I would set every single employee down (and that means from the interns and PA’s to the anchors and big name reporters). In this meeting, I would simply tell them that if they want to keep working for a company that can keep enough money in the payroll account to pay them regularly, things have to change.
The first thing to change is the corporate culture. CNN is not going to be the “Commie News Network” anymore. It will be the “Complete News Network”. This means that if you are capable of asking pointed and snarky questions of a conservative, then we expect the same level of talent when questioning a liberal. We will cover stories that make republicans look bad, and we will also cover ones that make them look good. We will do the same for democrats. We will state that we don’t care who wins, we will happily knee cap any fool that wins office and abuses their power.
If that culture change is unacceptable to them, then I would happy give them two weeks to find alternate employment and wish them well. There are too many journos being made now, and I will have little trouble in replacing any of them.
CNN seems to have choosen political sides like NBC and CBS —- We need credible people like Bernard Shaw and Judy Woodruff to report the news, people we can trust….. There are to many advocates in todays news rooms —- PBS Nightly News is clearly the most independent.
How about a non-liberal somewhere on CNN prime time? Nah, too radical. Junk keep sinking.
I guess that carrying Obama’s water isn’t working for you guys at CNN or MSNBC!
For decades media outlets have been “Spiking” stories which did not fit their agenda. FOX comes along and reports so many of the “Spiked” stories that the left immediately thinks FOX is lying.
No, FOX is not lying and to be fair FOX gets the occasional story wrong about as much as the other network sources. However, you have a much better chance of knowing more of what is going on it the world by watching FOX than the other alphabet networks.
I spent the last 26 years working in the print media industry and know all too well how many stories are “Spiked” by the left.
EXACTLY CORRECT! FOX is by no means perfect but they are at least trying to report the news not propaganda!
Watched “Newsroom” on HBO another Time-Warner network like CNN.
That show like CNN reports news like they “wished” to were with
a clever “Newsroom” cast like they wished they had! So
pretentious and revisional of stories they screwed up badly in
years past!
Bill Hemmer got smart, and now I hear Ann Curry might join CNN….Once they became the Clinton News Network ( CNN)….they lost me.
Only a lefty wouldn’t think CNN tilts left. With that said, I like Wolf, Barbara Starr and even Cooper (although that ‘keeping them honest’ nonsense has to go. ON the chopping block immediately are Don Lemon (go be an advocate and quite pretending to be a journalist). Soledad O’brien (the most irritating, disingenuous person on television) and Carol Costello (her personality seems to be stuck on ‘snide & cynical). Compare them to Megan kelly (an absolute rock star) as well as Martha McCallum and Shannon Bream. Can’t stand Shep and can barely tolerate O’Reilly or Hannity, but Greta and the Five are solid.
I thought I was the only one bothered by Carol Costello!
No wonder they are at a 21 yr low………….used to be (years ago) a good news source. NOW ALL THEY DO is have bullshit sessions on TV.
