EXCLUSIVE: Dr. Reid is staying put. I’ve learned that original Criminal Minds cast member Matthew Gray Gubler has signed a new two-year deal to remain on the CBS crime procedural. I hear his salary has been bumped to just north of $100,000 per episode. Along with co-star Paget Brewster, who opted to leave the ABC Studios/CBS Studios-produced series in May, Gubler was the only core cast member whose contract was up at the end of this past season. Coincidentally, Gubler directed Brewster’s original exit episode last spring before the actress returned to the series for one more season. It was one of three Criminal Minds episodes Gubler has helmed. On the series, which returns for an eighth season this fall, Gubler plays Behavioral Analysis Unit member Dr. Spencer Reid, a prodigy with an IQ of 187 and an eidetic memory who graduated high school at age 12 and holds multiple Ph.D. and B.A. degrees. Besides Brewster, all Criminal Minds stars, led by Thomas Gibson and Joe Mantegna, are new returning, joined by Jeanne Tripplehorn, who was recently cast as a new regular.

So if my math is right, 95% of the Criminal Minds cast will have to renegotiate their contracts next year, right? Thomas, Shemar and AJ signed a 2-year contract before season 7 started. Kirsten also had her deal re-upped before season 6 ended so that they could include her gig at the spinoff that didn’t survive. Jeanne signed on for 1 year only and since Joe entered CM on season 3, his original 5-year contract is likely to be up by the end of season 8. Am I correct?
Let’s hope they all decide to sign back on then…
Everyone else is correct, CMFAN, but not sure about Joe. Technically, Deadline reported last year that Joe’s contract was up *this* year, along with MGG’s. But we never heard anything other than Joe tweeting he was staying with the show. So, unknown.

Still enjoy the show but, particularly with this last season, it’s starting to show it’s age. It’s getting a bit stale. Characters have pretty much stopped progressing at all. The killers are getting too over the top and unbelievable. Prentiss’ exit was a huge letdown. That’s all they could come up with? She suddenly quits for no reason? I wish they hadn’t brought in a new team member and instead hired some new blood for the writing staff.
Yesssss! Just what I wanted to hear. There IS no CM without Reid! Hope this season he gets a bit bigger role than last year when he all but disappeared toward the end. Looking forward to him directing another episode too! w00t!

I wouldn’t watch CM without Matthew Gray Gubler. I love his portrayal of Reid! I just hope the writer’s give him some good material in Season’s 8 and 9 and hopefully, beyond!

Great to hear that MGG will be back next year. Reid’s the reason I watch CM. Here’s hoping that they give him more to do next year, Reid had so little last year he was moreorless a secondary character.

So agree. Veteran writers who know what to do with characters like this and can come up with believable villains. If they’re gonna keep Reid, USE him!!
No surprise here – the show still has a good life – and brining in a new agent will only freshen up the show.
I’m sure we can expect MGG to direct another episode this year. I read this option isn’t written into his contract,so it’s a plus.
So glad to hear this. He really makes the show work because he’s the only truly unique character. The show would be boring without him. In season 8 i’d like to see more of Hotchner’s new relationship, as well as more development of Morgan and Reid’s personal lives. We don’t see too much of them outside the FBI…and I just realised that I take this show far too seriously. *sigh*

Criminal minds is one of my favourite programmes (yes, I am from the UK!) but I cannot stand the character of the know-it-all Reid at all. He constantly interrupts with information that all the other characters should be aware of already. It makes the show sound like a public broadcasting education programme for dummies. He does make mistakes however, in ‘Devil’s Night’he pronounces Samhain as “SAMHANE”. The correct pronunciation is “SOW-iN”.
