It’s far too late for David Beckham to become a big star in the United States. And now the news is out that he can’t even bend it for the British Olympic team. Granted, he’s been credited with helping London win the bid to host the Summer Olympics this year. But on Wednesday, team manager Stuart Pearce reportedly alerted Beckham that he didn’t make the cut as one of the three older players on the UK Olympic soccer squad. (Pearce had the right to choose a trio of men over the age of 23). Beckham, who occasionally plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy pro team, might have been a big audience draw. Now the former captain of England’s national team out will sit on the sidelines. London 2012 chair Sebastien Coe said, “I will be talking to him about a Games time role.”

I seriously doubt anyone on Earth, including the man himself, thinks Beckham is among the best three over-23 English players today.
They’re just bitter he left that god forsaken country for the sunny beaches of Los Angeles.
But he did make a lovely tea cosy for his mum.
Bad Choice…. although Beckham is older ..he still has skills… the coach for England is a Schmuck and should look at Euro 2012 .. and be reminded that english players and the national team SUCK !!!! REALLY SUCK !! The only reason people watch the Premiere Ship League is because it’s filled with Non English Stars !!! Beckham has brought the MLS much notoriety and has helped the league… in 5 years time .. the MLS will be bigger than the NBA knocking at the Very Troubled NFL and the only game that will always be tops in the USA will be good old Baseball. BTW — I’ve never been a Beckham fan… he still should had been on the England roster….. Go Galaxy !!!!
Larry, I don’t even know what to say. If you think MLS is five years from taking over the NBA, then I really feel bad for you. MLS gets worse TV ratings than billiards on ESPN.
Actually Matt, I work at ESPN, are you are incorrect. MLS is actually our fastest growing viewership year on year and has been for the past 3 years. Of course the figures are no where near basketball, baseball or football and never will be. But as a ‘second tier’ sport, soccer is right at the top.
What is the ‘premier ship league’ ?? LA Galaxy wouldnt even get into Englands 3rd Tier League.
And FYI , the coach of Great Britain and England are two different people.
I’m sorry but I think its borderline idiotic to make the comment that in five years MLS will be anywhere near as successful as the NFL. Granted its a shame the amount of dirty players and team scandals seems to be on the rise but soccer will never come close to footballs popularity in the USA. Baseball will always be in Football’s shadow as well.
I didn’t know why Davd Beckham did not make the olympic soccer team then I read this article about this and everything made sense… so thank you Deadline.com for making it easy for me to understand and know something
