EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate is postponing the Dirty Dancing reboot. The studio has put the remake on ice for another year for casting reasons, Deadline has learned. The remake of the 1987 Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey film was scheduled to be released in July 2013, but now the movie is off the studio’s release dance card at least until 2014. Kenny Ortega, who was a choreographer on the original, is attached to direct the film. No cast had been announced. However Deadline has learned that Glee’s Lea Michele, Trespass’ Liana Liberato and Canadian singer Nikki Yanofsky were screen tested as were Brothers & Sisters’ Luke Grime, Nashville Star’s Justin Gaston and Dancing With the Stars’ Derek Hough.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

I’m assuming the fact that nobody was interested in this reboot was a contributing factor as well.
“On ice for casting reasons”…LOL.
This will stay in development limbo until Lionsgate runs out of all other ideas…I hope.
I have the feeling that Alan Moore is right: Our culture is turning to steam.
Geeezzzzz ok loved the first one but we have SO MANY GREAT SCREENWRITERS out there working hard for a break. I mean, really! Really? These reboots are busting everyone’s chops, well except those who get the cash AGAIN for the reboot WHICH IS FINE, but man, we are sitting on SUCH FINE PRODUCT! Ok, so I am back to hustling seven days a week. For us, nothing’s changed. Grrrrr….
Seriously?
FAME, FOOTLOOSE, FRIGHT NIGHT?
I know FAME flopped here but brought in $77m globally and of course THE KARATE KID re-do made bank, but with THIS movie? A movie that seems to still connect with most women between 10-60?
How’s that going to work?
Just don’t see it happening.
Wow, wouldn’t it be great to have “A movie that seems to still connect with most women between 10-60?”
BOX OFFICE GOLD
Re-read the post, DP.
The point is that the original is still regarded as a gem and few other re-dos have worked.
Now why on earth would you set the cutoff at 60?!!! lol
They realised the first one still works probably better than a remake could?
YES!!!!! Great news. Please ABANDON this remake. It is absolutely unnecessary. Whatever happened to letting a movie become a classic? You know, allowing it to “age” beyond 25 years? When the film first came out I was in college and didn’t want to see it. I saw it on video for the first time about 2 years ago because it’s one of my wife’s favorite flicks. And I have to say, I dig it. Great story. Great characters. A tribute to Patrick Swayze’s legacy. “Nobody puts baby in a corner!”
Derek Hough should do this.
Maybe people will start to realize that audiences are for the most part, not responding to remakes.
They are so damn stupid they could have re-released the original this summer for the 25th Anniversary and made an easy $100 Million from it without spending any money besides advertising it. Women and girls would have lined up to see it. No remake is necessary for this.
If they’re smart they’ll get it in a thousand theaters for August they still have time if they hurry but they’re too dumb to do this. The original was perfection and since it takes place in the Summer of 1963 it’s timeless and the period detail was wonderful.
Maybe this will give them time to entice Brett Ratner. Please…if we could only be so…lucky…
Nikki Yanofsky would be the perfect Baby!!! She is sooooo talented and really would be the best person suited to this role!!!! I could soooooo see and Derek Hough being the perfect new Baby and Johnny!!!
I went to Youtube to see what Nikki was like. It’s the equivalent of a Disney pop singer kid trying to do jazz with the forced styling of an adult. Horribly cutesy at best. She resembles Victoria Justice and is barely 18 to Jennifer Grey’s 27 in the original. The idea of her dirty dancing with anybody is disturbing. I’m hoping those mentioned as having screen tested are all out, and judging from the tone of the situation, they are. The guys are all way too boyish. At least 10 years too young. I’m sensing a theme since they tried to go that way with the girls. They’re trying to make the High School Musical equivalent of Dirty Dancing, and it’s just sad. If the guy doesn’t come off like a man instead of a boy, it’s pointless.
Reboot? Will it take place in the 70′s? This will tank and be forgotten faster then the “Footloose” reboot.
Maybe they should abandon remaking classics and try coming up with original scripts that will become classics? Either this generation of filmmakers and writers lacks any originality or the studio execs are short-sighted cowards and idiots.
If Derek Hough is cast in the lead, it will be a “must see” for me. Otherwise, I will just have to see how the previews look. Althugh nothing will ever replace the original, I think times have changed enough that a remake would be an essentially different movie, and moviegoers should be able to appreciate both.
WTF a reboot of this classic?! I cannot accept it, I agree that hollywood should coming up with new and better ideas instead of remaking great movies only to turn them into crap. I don’t know half of the names mentioned and the rest aren’t fit for the roles. Waste of time.
So the “Dirty Dancing” reboot has been (temporarily?) shelved because of “casting reasons”? Please run that one by me again, Lionsgate! If ever a project were “casting ready”, it’s this one–but ONLY with Derek Hough in the lead. Hough has been a movie-star-waiting-to-happen ever since he first displayed his superb dancing/choreographic talents on “Dancing with the Stars”. With the support of Jennifer Grey and Mr. Swayze’s widow, as well as a fan base in the millions, Mr. Hough could easily recreate the moviegoer-enchantment and boxoffice magic of the original “Dirthy Dancing” 25 years ago. I’m happy to see that 3 other commentators share my opinion on this matter. Had Derek Hough been cast as Ren in the recent reboot of “Footloose”, he would have galvanized that miscast mess into the audience-pleasing commercial smash it should have been. So, to the geniuses running the store at Lionsgate, stop wimping out and hiding behind the laughable “casting reasons” excuse for the delay of the “Dirty Dancing” reboot. With a reasonable budget and the extraordinarily talented Derek Hough in the lead, there’s little doubt “Dirty Dancing” will triumph just as it did 25 years ago.
WOW!!! Thank goodness for the stop for now! First of all this movie should not be remade at all!!! It’s going to be turned into some hip hop now a days film, which dirty dancing was not!! People tend to forget that it was based on a true story so to change it up is just dumb! However, because we all know it’s going to get made, lets get really and realize that some who is going to play Patrick, needs to be able to pull off being a tuff guy and a good dancer (in every move not just hip hop). I haven’t since anyone who can pull that off not even that kid from DWTS! Really him play the tuff guy, NO WAY!!! The closes I can get to someone playing Patrick would be Channing Tatum, and that because he can be tuff and dance! But I”m just saying!
I love this movie, and would hate to see the classic be turned into some lame remake I don’t get why people remake movies killing the point of it being a wonderful classic that people love. I LOVE THE ORIGINAL
