This weekend could begin a tough stretch for AMC Networks — and for Dish Network customers who enjoy shows such as Breaking Bad. AMC, IFC, and WE will no longer be available to Dish’s 14.1M customers beginning tomorrow night at 11:59 PM ET when the companies’ carriage contract expires. They aren’t talking, so odds are virtually nil that there’ll be a last-minute settlement. And Dish this morning continued its attack on the independent programmer, saying that it will replace AMC’s channels with what it calls “stronger movie and entertainment content.” Dish will offer HDNet Movies on Channel 130, Style on Channel 128, and HDNet (which is evolving into an entertainment and music channel called AXS.TV) on Channel 131.

AMC says Dish is using its customers as pawns to pressure the cable networks company to drop a $2.5B breach of contract suit involving the VOOM suite of HD channels. But Dish says it’s sticking up for subscribers by resisting a big price hike for the company behind shows including Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and The Killing. “AMC Networks requires us to carry low-rated channels like IFC and WE to access a few popular AMC shows,” says Dish SVP Programming Dave Shull. “The math is simple: it’s not a good value for our customers.” Dish adds that AMC “has further devalued its programming by making its handful of popular shows available to consumers via iTunes, Netflix and Amazon.com.” The company notes that AMC also faces turbulence from AT&T U-verse, which said this week that it also might yank the networks this weekend. AT&T says that AMC wants it to “pay nearly double what we believe other competitors pay — including a smaller-sized competitor.” AMC responded that it deserves compensation that “reflects the popularity of our programming.” There’s some hope of a settlement here; the companies are still talking. AMC shares have lost about 18% of their value since early May when Dish said it planned to drop the company’s channels.

Breaking bad comes back in a couple weeks. If Amc can hold out that long dish will get blown up.
I am all for providers holding the line on programming costs but they do it for profitability not for customers.
Why do you think AMC is requesting a huge rate increase, if not to seek higher profits?
I don’t understand why most people seem to be taking AMC’s side on this. If they had proposed a rate commensurate with their value, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Instead, they’re demanding a huge increase based on a couple popular programs on ONE of their networks. I appreciate the fact they’re trying to hold the line on programming costs rather than just caving and passing on whatever AMC wants to their customers. Plus, I can catch what I want on AMC from other sources.
The walking dead isn’t just a popular show….it is life.
The reason we are taking the side of AMC is we have already paid a premium price to Dish in order to receive AMC on that tier. They have replaced it with programs we can find on 2-3 other channels within Dish’s lineup DIsh sin’t doing it for their customers, they are doing it to keep more profits for themselves, no matter how it upsets their customers. Also, Dish continues to advertise on TV that they have ALL the channels of the others, but at a lower cost. This is false advertising.
So now AMC wants to hold Verizon customers hostage as well. What a wonderful group they are. Put on quality programming and then screw everyone over. Of course Verizon is too blame as well but boo hiss AMC…what is your game? This is American greed at it’s best. You put on a banner during your programming and make it sound like it’s the cable company making this move but, it’s really just your way of screwing over the cable company and then the cost will be passed on to the subscribers. What a load of crap…happy holidays to you, AMC….guess you really don’t care about anyone except your own pockets. Maybe you should invest all your new found revenue in an oil company; they seem to enjoy screwing over the customer, too. pathetic!
The percentages say otherwise.
Breaking Bad just doesn’t have that many viewers for it to make a big dent in Dish. Personally, I’ll just torrent it. And so will many others.
AMC is being quite stupid and naive, which has been my experience dealing with them as a writer.
Once again, glad I have DirecTV.
Oh, the one who just dropped 20+ Viacom Channels?
UH, NO UNLIKE DISH THEY MADE ARRANGMENTS SO THAT THERE CUSTOMERS WOULDNT HAVE TO SUFFER. ONE WEEK AND ALL THE CHANNELS WERE BACK. FACE IT DISH SUCKS, THERE IS NO TV1, WE, AMC, I AM SO UPSET I GOT THIS CRAPPY SERVICE. I SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH DIRECT
Sucks that i cant watch my favorite shows. Come on dish pony up.
The walking dead has a lot of fans
I would like to have amc back on dish . I really enjoy the programming. Thinking about stitching to another provider.
I hate Dish Network. They overcharge and make it extremely tough and costly to cancel service. I hate all cable companies actually. They make it so costly to get the shows you actually want to watch that it has driven the most conscientious to piracy. Now people’s AARP age parents steal content! Genie is out of the bottle now you greedy dummies. If networks were smart they would start releasing shows for download with commercials in them. Embrace the spread and survive. Dish is too costly with sub-standard options and service.
exactly. if i can’t get AMC then i lose the last reason to keep dish network. so long dish – you can go the way of bank of america (boy it felt good to close down that account last week!)
We’ve heard it all before, people will leave Bank of America, people will leave Dish, I’m dropping Netflix, it’s all been said before, guess what people are coming back to Netflix, subs are not going to leave Dish because of a few programs, and Bank of America, well …. They’re back to normal, still lending and still in business.
If you read the article above you would see its AMC that is holding Dish hostage by requiring them to pay for two low rated channels just to get AMC.
Who watches IFC or WE anyway?
As for the popular shows AMC shot themselves in the foot when they sold the rights to not only Netflix but to ITunes.
This is a great place to vent your anger and let some steam off but it really isn’t going to matter. Let’s see where Dish is next quarter in the amount of Subscribers. This is a big yawn for me.
“Who watches IFC and WE anyway?”
I watch IFC all the time….it is how a channel should be. It is like a regular channel, has commercials and everything but it is completely uncut and uncensored. Has good shows and movies too, one of my favorite channels along with AMC but now I Have neither of them, I will either use this opportunity to get some good deals out of Dish or I will be switching to cable.
Rainbow media, or whatever the corp name is, is negotiating from a point of weakness. MAD MEN and Breaking Bad are basically gone. AMC is way down in chips to play. Significant investment in WE and IFC probably seems like a brilliant idea now, and it isn’t too late.
IFC’s programming was commercial free until late last year. It has always had a select few unconventional PBS type spots between programming though. IFC would never have gone completely commercial had the revenue been up. Commercials were probably necessary, and this does not bother me much. Their aversion to cutting content is a pleasant thought that AMC should adopt again.
I think Dish sees IFC as going the way of American Movie Classics. It was once a legitimate “movie” channel. Now it is a mess with fewer independent choices at a time when independent movies are really starting to pick up.
Keeping this channel going is a no-brainer. Atrocious programming choices will not work though. Seriously, you could make a slight case for airing Malcolm in the Middle on AMC, but it certainly was not independent! I do not mind kiddie programming. In fact, there should probably be much more on IFC, but it should be at the very least less studio involved content. Rarer studio films would be preferable to sitcoms from just a decade ago. There are plenty of decent inexpensive kid’s flicks out there.
Why should Dish customers pay more for a product that was radically different when the last deal was made? Because it is a better product. AMC may be much better at present time, but IFC and WE are severely lacking. Its time to build a media empire, not just a grand channel with a couple of weaklings.
Dish is not entirely innocent in this matter either.
I watch IFC and We All the time.. WHen I sogned up for DISH a few months ago, I double checked to make sure that my favorite channels were on the package I took. Then 3 months later, they are gone.!! ANd I cant do anthing about it due to the two year contract. Its BS!! If they have the right to change with out notice, then We should to. I didn’t brake my contract.. THEY DID.
And I have been watching Breaking Bad since day one. THis is the last season, and two weeks before it comes on, DISH DROPS IT!. I cant wait til I can GET EID IF DISH! I HATE THEM!
Well actually, this is not Dish’s fault. They are trying to keep our prices down. Would you rather see a price increase to see the shows you love or have them negotiate it down? They WILL come to an agreement because those channels are not going to want to lose the potential to be in front of over 14 million viewers. Don’t hate Dish…hate AMC for being a bunch of greedy execs that cannot just take 10′s of millions in profits…they want HUNDREDS of millions!!!
I feel the same way. I asked the dang rep and she was like yes ma’am all of those channels are available, I go surffing through my channels NONE of them I am so pissed off I am tempted to just say screw it and cancel the service. OH, but there are 100 freaking music channels and 20 spanish. I am so upset!!!!
Why reply then ?? I always wondered why they are rated worse than Directv and I found out why after I purchased it. I am pissed off and I will be dropping Dish once my contract is up. Probably before then because I cant see The Walking Dead, or The Braxtons.
I believe you are very wrong. Dish is NOT accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and the BBB has received 13915 complaints in the past 3 years against Dish! People WILL leave them (like I will) as soon as they can. Did you know in 2009 Dish had to pay almost $6 million to settle allegations that it practiced misleading consumer marketing and lacked full disclosure when dealing with costs and fees?
Oh yeah, people will leave Dish!
I really like AMC and IFC and sorry that DISH is dropping them based on a fee dispute. I rather see DISH drop ESPN or at least give subscribers the option for ESPN as a pay channel. I don’t watch any ESPN channel and object to paying what I understand is $10 plus a month to have it on my channel lineup. That’s over $600 wasted over 5 years.
Having to pay for sports I never watch, having no interest, is a major reason why I’m dropping all of it – cable, satellite, it’s all the same overpriced crap. I’ll get everything from Netflix or if all else fails, torrents. The industry creating turmoil like this just drives more people to torrents. Idiots!
I totally agree with you, it is both . We will drop dish also and get online and pay for it there, the only reason we have dish to begin with is for the walking dead, and hell on wheels, not much of a tv buff. Good luck to everyone. We are all so sick and tired of the minupulation on both sides.Maybe we should all just go back to the basics and get out atenena out of storage and buy the conversion boxes and just be happy with regular channels again.
Everyone loses all around except for Netflix and even piracy. “Breaking Bad” is on the verge of its strongest season and people will go to great lengths to get it. As far as WE and IFC, “Kendra on Top” and “Comedy Bang Bang” are negligible in this fight and ratings for “Bunk” are nearly nonexistent. Maybe AMC had hope their other channels would have stronger originals by now.
Tomorrow’s headline:
Subscribers tell Dish Network that WE will be gone tomorrow.
You’re stuck in a contract, so, no, you won’t.
What does it say that “Bullet in the Face” is IFC’s most interesting show since “Portlandia” and they’re burning it off over two nights? The AMC networks make decisions like no other.
Not all Dish subscribers are stuck in a contract, and the ones that are have options to get out of their contracts if they choose. Other MVPDs sometimes even run promos to pay for the ETF for switching to them.
The number of people who are on Dish, who actually watch AMC, who will actually leave Dish, who can actually leave because they are not under contract, is not much to make a big difference to Dish but a massive loss for AMC.
AMC has everything to lose.
Hope is not the same thing as basic math.
Not exactly sure what you are going on about with hope not being the same as basic math, but your post that I responded to has no basis in reality.
No one is “stuck in a contract” with Dish, any Dish subscriber, at any time of their choosing can end their contract with Dish and switch to another MVPD. They will have to pay an early termination fee, but they aren’t “locked in” until their contract expires, and sometimes other MVPDs will even pay the ETF.
Again, here in reality, no one is forced to stay a Dish subscriber.
Personally, I have Directv so I don’t really care what happens on Dish. I was just pointing out that your comment to Collinsmith didn’t make any sense especially since you have no idea if he even is under contract, which wouldn’t even matter if he was.
Okay I am that AMC may be leveraging the situation try to force more profitability, but let’s get one thing straight :
DISH SUCKS!!!
I was a customer for over 8 years and always hesitant to change because I didn’t really think it’d be that much better or that much different with the other cable and satellite networks. How wrong I was!
Switching to directv was a jaw dropping experience -jaw dropping in the sense of quality and variety and everything better that comes out of being a directv customer compared to a Dish customer, but also at the same time extremely frustrating to realize how poorly the Dish product was and how much I was paying for such a poor product!! I am sorry if you have a Dish contract and are unable to get out of this without spending a lot of money, but I have absolutely no pity for Dish – They’re like the BP Oil of satellite providers!
If you have a Dish contract now I can not suggest strongly enough that before you renew with the next time you look at directv or, realistically, any other alternatives available!! My experience with directv was a very positive one.
I only wish we could switch. Unfortunately, on our property we can’t get the DIRECTV satellites due to trees, so we’re with DISH. I can say that DISH has been far better and lower priced than awful Comcast.
When we first decided to drop overpriced Comcast at our house, our first choice was Dish — and only because it had a name that was easier to remember and spell. We knew nothing about satellite TV.
Luckily, there was a tree on that side of the house that prevented their satellite from being installed (sorry, Eric!), so we got DirecTV instead and what a difference it makes.
I’m very happy with the number of channels I get per the monthly cost — and if I recall correctly, DirecTV just renewed their agreement with AMC Networks so we won’t have that to worry about for a while.
I suggest any Dish subscribers who prefer to watch TV on their TVs (rather than Netflix+DVDs or bitTorrent) and can switch to DirecTV to go to DirecTV’s website and see what channels are available per package (the info’s a bit outdated now, but usually in the direction of having MORE channels in a particular package than they’re saying there, not less).
the directv that dropped 27 channels?
I have been a dish customer for many years-and as of this month,I am switching to direct. When I called dish network over a month ago, they told me that they would not be dropping amc,ifc and we.Even said they would put them back down on the stations that they yanked them from-another strategic move’.So I called two more times-these times I was informed that all they could do is tell the ones higher up in office about my complaint. So then I start e mailing dish network, getting a reply about how much their customers mean to them.So if we mean that much, let US pick the channels we want-I told them that if we lose amc-hence, the walking dead, that it would be a deal breaker-so I called direct and not only will we keep these channels, but they even lowered my bill-for the first year I know, but even after that it will be slightly lower than it has been.
You must not have experienced yet DirecTV’s D-rating from the Better Business Bureau in customer service yet then lol!!!
DISH was number one of all television providers in customer service in ASCII this year. too bad, so sad.
If you had any idea how channel packaging worked, you wouldn’t comment the way you do. Have you ever noticed the shopping/advertisement channels you get? Who wants those? Nobody. Well, AMC is forcing companies to pay more and add more of those channels because they don’t just purchase amc separately from other channels, they have to purchase whatever else amc wants to throw in with it. and quite frankly, i find the shows on AMC about as enthralling as QVC anyway so GOOD RIDDANCE!
Wow, you are gullible. Deal with them. They are horrific. They were the worst service provider, my service was always out, even with the protection plan it cost me every single time they had to come out and fix it. Customer service was nasty.
I have Comcast and yes, they are expensive, but I’ll tell you what, I have had 4 interactions with their customer service and every single one of them ended with me getting what I needed or wanted. Try that with Dish.
It’s funny how AMC dragged itself up out of the gutter to become a premiere network for original programming.
AMC was, once upon a time, the premiere network for commercial-free, unedited and uncensored films from their library of classic films. After all, AMC used to mean American Movie Classics. Then, sadly, like Bravo before it and IFC after it, they decided to invite sponsors to advertise on their network. They started breaking up their movies with a commercial break at about the halfway point. Gradually, the commercials continued to creep into the works until AMC was just another ABC/CBS/NBC/WB/CB/ETC.
The network had been all but forgotten, until someone had the bright idea to offer original scripted programming. Somehow, either through sheer luck or incredible foresight, AMC culled a remarkable group of writers, directors, actors and showrunners to produce one sophisticated, intelligent and popular show after another.
10 years ago, no one would have wanted to wipe their butt with AMC; now AMC has returned from oblivion as master of the commercial networks?
I don’t even get the package that carried AMC on Dish so this really makes no difference to me. I’ve just been getting Walking Dead on ITunes. I’n tempted to drop sat all together and just ITunes the few shows in watched
I wish a company would offer a pay per channel rate.
Everyone in the industry loses when they send a message to consumers that TV is getting to be a big, fat headache that isn’t worth the trouble. Meanwhile, Neilsens are dropping through the floor.
Personally, I’m cutting the cord and switching to Netflixing everything via Roku. It’s Comcast, not DishTV, that I will be dropping, but why assume that this kind of turmoil can’t hit cable?
I don’t want to have to worry and plan about where I get this or that TV show from. Entertainment should be fun and seamless, not a chore. Netflix is dirt cheap and has everything, even HBO, as long as you aren’t allergic to DVDs. So I’ll DVD what I must, and stream what I can.
Couple thoughts here, when this all started breaking out earlier this month I saw the writing on the wall. I for one believe AMC’s claim that this has more to do with the VOOM lawsuit that carriage fee increases. Dish Network / Echostar seem to have a very long memory, they lost a lawsuit with TiVo some time back over how DVR functionality was implemented, and instead of doing the smart thing, and offering their subscribers an integrated TiVo / receiver set top box (like DirectTV and Many cable providers have done) they’ve continued to offer a sub-par DVR service. The hopper system does have a hope of beginning to catch up, but for me it is far too little far too late.
Dish chose to yank programming from it’s normal spot on the lineup with not so much as an hours notice to their subscribers, which as a subscriber I found to be extremely rude.
I’m lucky though, I’m not under contract with Dish, so I’ll just vote with my wallet. From what I’ve found, in the 10 years since I was last a cable subscriber, things have gotten MUCH better on that side of fence, so I’ll just hop on over. And you can bet when I call to cancel my service on tuesday that I’ll let them know that their decision to drop AMC played into my decision, but when they decided to be rude to their customers, that really was the last straw… now with cable, I get my TiVo back, get the programming I want, and to be completely honest, I’ll be paying roughly the same to the Cable Company for TV and Internet that I was previously paying Dish for just TV.
Dish customers went through the same thing with FX. Dish is holding it’s customers as hostage. I’m not under contract and I’ll be dropping Dish and going with Direct or some other option. Cable is not an option for me but internet delivery is. Funny how Direct and the cable companies are not dropping AMC. If their rates were so outrages then they would be dropping AMC too.
I upgraded my package deal just so I could access AMC for The Walking Dead. All this time I have paid this extra amount of money for one channel. Because I love that show just this much. But with AMC being taken off Dish I will be canceling service altogether Monday. Bottom line: Corporations and the like can screw one another over all they want but I am a consumer and I want to get what I pay for. Goodbye Dish. You should have gotten rid of all those crappy info channels and religious networks if you were so worried about your consumer having to pay for channels they do not want. But this is not what you are truly concerned about, it’s blatantly obvious.
Madmen and Breaking Bad are some of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen. Thank you AMC for financing these incredible series. I hope your company continues to create groundbreaking shows that enrich my life.
Stop saying Netflix is an alternative. Episodes don’t show up on instant until after the dvd comes out. Which is months after the season ends. Torrent it is.
We alternated w/some friends to watch “Hell on Wheels” every other time, and we all like the other creative AMC shows. DISH is messing with our socializing now, so we’ll have to drop them and go to Netflix, or other sources. After you’ve had quality, you really can’t go back, or watch those lame reality shows. Next one predicted: Trios; yippee yuck! Anyway, I’m getting tired of having to go through all those, and infomercials to try to find something worth watching; so long DISH!
I only just discovered The Walking Dead accidentally during a marathon they were running a few months ago. I found it to be so entertaining that I added it to my already overloaded list of DVR series. I was looking forward to watching next season. Maybe I’ll get the chance. Maybe I won’t. It’ll be disappointing if I cannot. But, the fact is, AMC has to fund these shows. Those of you who claim they don’t have a right to charge what they want seem to have forgotten that these shows ain’t cheap! If they don’t make enough, they’ll simply pull the plug. Advertisers pay because they have an audience. Being dropped by DISH, and possibly by AT&T next, will impact advertisement sales (commercials). Less money generally means less budgeted for each show, meaning one or more will meet the axe… and ultimately everybody loses. So, for everyone who is considering the whole “I’ll just use an alternative” — just realize that the alternative may not matter if the show is cancelled due to lack of funds. AMC has a dog in this fight, like it or not. DISH does too. They are “supposedly” fighting to keep our rates in check. Yes, that means they want to keep profiting (insanely or not) — I mean, isn’t that just totally American of them? Why should they not be allowed to profit? However, if this is indeed 99.9% about a stupid lawsuit, then shame on them. Unfortunately, it’s one word against the other. Believe who you want, but either side has a valid position, given that it’s the truth. Now, as for DISH being crap… I totally disagree, but only as in my experience, and not in yours. Truth is… they are all crap to one degree or another. They all have good and bad issues, pros and cons. I had DirecTV once. It sucked (for me). I had cable. It was way too expensive. I’m not eligible for FIOS or U-verse (or I’d probably have it). So, I now have DISH and Clear 4G for internet. Both are satisfactory and sufficient. The price is reasonable in both cases. I lost several FOX channels for a minute some time ago. Got ‘em back. Now I’ve lost AMC. I’ll just have to deal. Many of my favorite shows that have been cancelled in the past had me pulling out my hair. But, life went on. I suspect that losing The Walking Dead could elicit a similar reaction. But, I know that life will go on. I for one am tired of being yanked along with these companies. But, there really could be more important things to complain about. Or, put another way… realize how lucky you are that this is the biggest issue in your life at this moment… and not the sound of bombs exploding outside your bedroom window… or that you even have a bedroom window… or a bedroom at all… or…… (you get the idea)
Obviously Damian knows what makes the world go round. I’ll just ditto what he said!
I’m in your boat. Got dish and clear 4g and the value for both is right for me.Had directv and comcast. sure they renewed their AMC contracts but they’ll just jack up their prices as they constantly do.Every one of these companies has strengths and weaknesses, Al we can do is pick the one that works for us. I’ll figure a way to watch Walking Dead if the dispute ain’t fixed by then. Great post Damian.
I use to work for DISH and they are bunch of penny pinchers. I believe it does stem from the pending lawsuit and I believe AMC when it says they haven’t even spoken about rate increases. I can speak from experience that DISH does not care about their customers. They say they do but I worked with them for over 8 yrs and they do not…Trust me.
It had the same issue occur a month ago. I called and asked a customer service Rep if they were dropping the channels and they lied and told me I had nothing to worry about which is extremely irritating because we as customers do not pay them to lie to us and I’m looking into switching to direct TV as well.
I have nothing but kudos for Dish Network; they’ve been an excellent provider with fantastic service (are you reading this, Comcast?). And even though I love “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” on AMC I can certainly do without the old episodes of “The Rifleman” and (now) “CSI: Miami”, and we won’t even mention the constant “Three Stooges” marathon. For that alone, I’m siding with the Dish.
Will be dropping Dish. ATT u verse just went into negotiations with AMC and will KEEP AMC cuz they want to keep their customers. You will be losing many customers Dish!!! Too bad for you!!1
Dear AMC and Dish,
Please stop your juvenile pissing match.
Dish, please provide me with the content I signed-up for every month.
AMC, be reasonable. Your hit shows will go away one-day…they all do. Respect your audience. That is the long-game.
Best post on this site.
I dont think we should have to pay the 250 package price if the channels isn’t going to be on dish lineup
I am so sick and tired of this type of thing happening. I have to pay for 200 channels I NEVER watch so I can get the 35 channels I do. DISH isn’t doing me any favors. If they want to keep customers happy let them pay per channel for the ones they want.
I’ve had Dish for 7 years. While I’ve always had the “Everything” Package” that package has been shrinking over time and does NOT include everything anymore. The price has continued to go up, however. I keep losing channels and am told when I call “Oh that’s part of Group X now and you have to pay extra” or something similar. AMC, IFC and Sundance are all important channels to me. I tolerated the loss of IFC and Sundance but AMC was the last straw. DirecTV is coming to my house next week to take down the Dish satellite and put up their own. My parents already made the switch a couple of years ago and have been encouraging me to do so all along.
Why DON’T they let us buy our channels ala carte? That’s what many people are doing via Amazon, iTunes, and the lot and they don’t miss Satellite/Cable at all.
