DreamWorks Studios has acquired feature film rights to EA’s video game franchise, Need for Speed. Brothers George and John Gatins developed the original story with George writing the feature’s screenplay, DreamWorks announced. EA will produce along with John Gatins and Mark Sourian. Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) is attached to direct. The project has a target production start date for early next year for a 2014
release. Need for Speed is one of EA’s best-selling video game franchises. Since the release of the first title, the series has sold more than 140 million units worldwide, generating an estimated $4 billion in retail revenue, making it one of the biggest franchises in video gaming, according to the announcement.

Well at least we know George Gatins didnt steal this idea.
Call me crazy but I think Chris Santos could be right for this.
That’s just plain dumb. So they purchased the concept of cat racing? Need for speed has no story lines no characters and no continuity though the series. Just various racing some some street some track and some being chased by cops. All they are getting is am empty license.
Pre-Established IP that’s been in the market for over 10 years, New Console games coming out every year or two, millions of reachable consumers who have downloaded the mobile game, and millions upon millions of EA consumers who will receive emails, facebook updates, and tweets. Plus the opportunity for CPG marketing with inserts in ALL of EA’s console titles including Madden, NBA, Tiger Woods, and now UFC on top of all the other titles they’re working on in secret right now for launch in 2 years which will have 100s of millions of dollars in promotions and ads reaching millions of consumers. I don’t see why it’s taken this long for something like this to be swept up for a film adaptation. It’s plain dumb not to considering the built in promotion vehicles.
Nice work making the movie industry sound so clinical and sterile
On the contrary, I think the concept of cat racing could possibly recharge this entire industry.
When does Dreamworks officially turn out the lights and call it a day?
I remember the days when they were gonna be something…
great work by UTA as reps for EA. oh, actually, it was WME that finally got an EA project going. so, nice work to those guys. wonder how long that UTA retainer lasts.
Need for speed the run made into a film would be nice.
