When Jessica Paré made her debut during the fourth season of Mad Men, few might’ve guessed she would emerge as one of the key characters on AMC’s multiple-Emmy-winning series. Least of all Paré. Still, at the end of that season she was engaged to Jon Hamm’s lead character, Don Draper, and in the current season five she has had many memorable scenes that have sparked
plenty of talk that her performance may add to creator Matt Weiner’s Emmy haul.
AWARDSLINE: Did you have an idea when you joined the show that this would become a break-out character?
PARÉ: Oh God no! Absolutely not. I mean, as a fan of the show I’m sure you know that there are a lot of secretary characters that don’t really ever come to the forefront or have a storyline of their own necessarily. When I first auditioned, I used scenes from previous seasons. So I had no concept of what she was like at all. Never mind what her arc would be. So it was, well, excuse my profanity, it was fucking shocking!
AWARDSLINE: Did you ever imagine you would be a part of this show?
PARÉ: Of course not. No, it was more like, I’ll never do anything that good. And even now when I drive around LA, there are still a few billboards up, and I see the billboards and I still can’t believe that I’m on that show. I can’t believe my luck. Literally, every time I speak to Matt, I’m like, ‘Well I’m going to New York for the Met Ball next week, did I mention that I wanted to thank you for changing my life?’.
AWARDSLINE: It is an iconic cast now, everybody knows them. They know those characters, and here you are walking into it, working with them and they’ve worked together for four years and all of a sudden there you are. Is it a difficult situation?
PARÉ: It’s definitely intimidating. I was lucky enough to be eased into last season. I did some background work, and I had a few lines. But mostly I didn’t have that much to do, so I got to know everybody pretty gradually. It’s a wonderful set to be on because they’re all such talented actors and they work together so well, and they all genuinely like each other and enjoy each other’s company.
AWARDSLINE: Jon Hamm and you have extraordinary chemistry. You just totally believe this relationship. I know he’s a super nice guy, but what’s he like to work with?
PARÉ: He’s horrible, the worst part of my job… [laughter] He’s obviously incredibly talented, and if you know him then you know that he’s super intelligent, very, very funny, and he likes to have an enjoyable time. So, it’s a joy, absolutely.
AWARDSLINE: The way it started for you this season is, obviously, iconic – your rendition of the song “Zou Bisou Bisou.” It went onto iTunes and people started buying it.
PARÉ: Yeah, I went to my local record store the other day and was sort of wandering around the store picking up a few things and as I was checking out [the guy working there] said, ‘Oh, by the way, your record is selling really well.’
AWARDSLINE: You are from Montreal, and your character is from Montreal, and your father is a professor and your father in this is a professor, so the obvious question … Do you relate at all to Megan here?
PARÉ: Like looking in a mirror. A really flattering mirror. I think the Montreal thing was written for me. You know Matt liked that, he loved Montreal and he stayed there before. And Megan’s maiden name is Calvet, which comes from an inn that Matt stayed at in old Montreal. So I think it came from me. But the professor thing I think was a coincidence. … I think the major trait that Megan and I have in common, and maybe it’s not unrelated to being from Montreal, is that she has a real joie de vivre. It’s a very positive outlook and I think her basic state is one of relative happiness. I think that that’s sort of what she and I share.
AWARDSLINE: Look how far you’ve come in 10 years.
PARÉ: I love acting. I love what I do. I am absolutely filled every day with gratitude that I get to do it. And especially on a project like this, but it’s not just about getting one big break because you kind of have to get one of those after the next. [laughter] And it’s tough. Before I got the show I was really struggling. I was living on a friend’s dime. She was letting me stay in one of her extra bedrooms, rent-free I mean, look, I am lucky enough that I have never had to get a day job to pay the rent which is more than most actors can say, but I was definitely contemplating a move back to Canada when I got the show.
AWARDSLINE: Really? Fate intervened.
PARÉ: Yeah. Again I have to text Matt to say Thanks!

Easily the worst part of the show. Praying she’s gone soon, only a matter of time before Doc gets a new girl.
You obviously forgot about Glen.
you’re mad – the scene between her and sally in the dinner discussing boys – her reaction to sally getting the coffee – its just beautiful. Its a gorgeously acted scene. she is spontaneously and enjoyably in the moment.
you don’t know acting from bupkus.
dislike. I think she’s terrific. but, happy we all get to have our own opinion.
Well, J., considering you think the lead character’s name is ‘Doc’, it is no wonder you don’t think Pare is good on the show: you are clearly a moron. Pare is a terrific talent.
Megan is a much better person to Don than Betty was. Don doesn’t cheat on Megan because she treats him with respect and kindness. Betty is devoid of any kindness. She doesn’t have any respect and never did.
Got some mommy issues there, haven’t you?
“Megan is a much better person to Don than Betty was.”. . . . Which has nothing to do with the article about the actress. Megan doesn’t exist.
Game of Thrones deserves to win this season over Mad Men. Mad Men season 5 has been terrible. That scene where Joan sold herself just to get an account was cartoonish and poor writing. It violated the shows rules by having her act out of character.
5% of the firm and financial security for life for her and her child? Joan as a character is not incapable of making that decision. Also she has, to be fair, a jaundiced view of men. Her doctor fiancé basically raped her before marriage, and roger used her pretty badly over the years.
I would think that Joan, at this point, would value security over everything, and she no longer believes that a man gives that – sleeping with one (once) to get it however…
completely agree. Joan knows the score having been around the block enough. so, finally, she’s getting something REAL for what she gave to Roger for years.
we’ve all done worse for less — including Joan!
Not to mention they set up her decision by having him leave her for Vietnam. It’s not like she just went for it out of the blue.
Mad Men doesn’t deserve to win this season. You’re right about that part. But Game of Thrones was not great either this season. It had one great episode. I think Homeland will win.
Supporting actress nod for Ms. Pare? You think?
She’s actually submitted as a lead. I hope she gets in!
She’s submitted in the lead category. Because apparently she’s the star of the show now after just one season.
She is now a lead character among other lead characters.
She’s doing great in Mad Men. Rooting for Don and Megan forever. The beautiful Montreal I’ll always remember its Summer Olympic 1976 being one of the best and most memorable Olympic of all times !
She’s great on the show.
From showing bare breasts in Hot Tub Time Machine to Emmy nods in less than two years. Crazy-ness.
Been a fan of her since Hot Tub Time Machine…If you’ve seen the movie you know why.
I was prepared not to like Megan but I think just as she was eased in with the cast, she eased in with viewers. I think she’s a good vehicle for moving forward as far as the 60′s. It’s more of a stretch for Betty’s housewife character to advance down the field. Betty is a pretty cold customer and is unlikely to become a women’s lib character or anti-war demonstrator for instance, develop a new story arc or do much besides being a thorn in Don’s side. Betty hasn’t been seen much this season and frankly I don’t care if she ever comes back.
Wow! A non-blonde actress in Hollywood. Really I am shocked to see Hollywoodteurs recognize a women without blonde hair. Like those non blondes before Jessica Pare, we will be able track her trajectory in Hollywood with the evolution of hair color lightening during her career.
Julianne Moore, Angelina Jolie, Isabella Adjani, Sandra Bullock, Marion Cotillard, Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon, Kristen Stewart, Natalie Portman, Mary Louise Parker, Courtney Cox, Juliana Marguelies, Eva Longoria, Tina Fey, Mariska Hargitay, Callie Thorne, Anne Hathaway, Zooey Deschanel, Megan Fox, Kate Beckinsale, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Mila Kunis, Kera Knightley, Anna Kendrick, Ellen Page, Terri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Amy Adams, Christina Hendricks, CAtherine Zeta Jones, Selena Gomez, Debra Messing …
Shall I go on?
She should thank January Jones for getting pregnant. She’s getting the material Jones would have got if she didn’t get pregnant. But next season Betty is gonna be back in full force. It makes me happy because I don’t have mommy issues and absolutely love Betty. People tend to forget she is who she is because of how Don treated her. If he treated her like Megan, she wouldn’t have become the bitch everyone loves to hate.
January Jones couldn’t play the range that Pare has. January Jones is convincing as cold and removed. That’s about it.
What range does Jessica Pare have on Mad Men? All she does is pout and woodenly recite her lines. She has no chemistry with the other actors on the show either.
I love that three actors from Jack and Bobby came on Mad Men. John Slattery, Matt Long, and Jessica Pare. Good actress, just do not love her on the show.
Agree, Pare is good young actress,…but miscast on “Mad Men”. Zero on-stage “chemistry” between her and Jon Hamm… IMO.
Her Mary Sue character ruined Mad Men this season. No way does she deserve to be in the same category as Elisabeth Moss and Claire Danes.
A childish passive-aggressive unstable woman who acts like a petulant child when she doesn’t get her way is a Mary-Sue? Hilarious. If you don’t like the character, then fine, but at least know what a Mary-Sue is.
How can you honestly say that with a straight face with the emotional problems she showed throughout season 5?
Congrats, Ms. Pare!
You are one of the best things about Mad Men and last seasons final episode where Don takes you and the kids to California was absolutely delightful! I remember the wonderful girls and fashions from the sixties and it brought back terrific memories! You fit right in.
Thanks again to Mad Men!
Great actress and great character on Mad Men, but up for best lead actress with Moss (who was GREAT this season)? No.
She has great chemistry with Jon Hamm? Really? Cause I thought he had more chemistry sitting in that bar with Christina Hendricks for ten minutes than he had all season with Pare. And no need to text Matt Weiner Jess, just sign his multiple copies of Hot Tub Time Machine and be available for personal hands-on viewings. How else do you go from guest star to lead actress in one year? Wink Wink.
Mad Men was written and, therefore, understood by intelligent people.
