EXCLUSIVE: The Greendale Community College gang will be coming back intact in the fall. I have learned that Sony Pictures TV, which produces Community, has picked up the options on all actors from the cult NBC comedy series for next season. That includes co-star Chevy Chase, who seemed noncommittal about his future on the show in the spring. “I probably won’t be around that much longer,” he said in an interview with the Huffington Post in April, around the time we broke the story about his feud with Community creator-executive producer Dan Harmon. Following Community‘s renewal by NBC for a fourth season last month, Harmon was replaced with new showrunners, David Guarascio and Moses Port. When a Community Comic-Con panel was announced yesterday, confirmed to appear were Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Gillian Jacobs and Danny Pudi. The list doesn’t not include Chase as well as fellow original regular cast member Donald Glover. It turns out Chase is out of town for the convention but will be back to work when Community starts production on Season 4 as will be all other regulars, McHale, Jacobs, Brown, Brie, Glover, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong. The series is riding high after scoring its first major award at the recent Critics Choice Television Awards, where it won best comedy series. More good news for the show came out of San Diego, where Community was moved up to the convention center this year.

Too bad. Was hoping Chevy was out. He’s always been the weakest link in an otherwise brilliant show.
This comment is streets behind.
“….confirmed to appear were Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Gillian Jacobs and Danny Pudi, which represents the entire original regular cast sans Chase.”
And none for you, Donald Glover and Ken Jeong.
Or Jim.
May we assume Donal Glover will also return?
As I huge fan of this show- I have no desire to watch anymore episodes- the show was harmon. Just as the Sarah Silverman show turned horrible after Harmon left- this show is going to be a shell of its former self.
In your opinion. You haven’t even watched an episode without Harmon yet for pete sake . Will it be the same ? No , but could it still be overly enjoyable ? Sure.
It’s still a fairly solid bet that the show won’t be nearly the same without Harmon around, though.
I think even best-case scenario, it’ll be like the 7th season of Gilmore Girls — a well-intentioned attempt to stay true to the tone and the rhythm of the thing, but without the person/people who ran and controlled everything, it generally felt hollow. And that was (A) a less-ambitious and weird show than Community, and (B) a show where the creator at least got to hand-pick her successor. Ugh.
I think everyone at NBC and Sony want it to be more like the recent Tron movie: the same overall tone, with a harmless Daft Punk soundtrack, and maybe some ambiguous Boxleitner. Now we’ll never get to find out what Harmon planned for the group when they graduated, for Jeff’s celebratory dinner, for a hundred other little things.
(Also, the new showrunners were responsible for the pilot for the American version of “The IT Crowd”? Somebody hold me. I feel so cold right now.)
Haha!!! You just compared Community to Gilmore Girls! I think people are forgetting that Harmon isn’t the only person on the show. There are still great writers there and that is ultimately what makes a show.
Harmon only worked on one or two episodes before he left the Sarah Silverman show.
Nobody cares that much they’re all coming back (though it’s nice to see) if Dan Harmon is gone. Anyone who honestly likes the show will tell you that Chase was far more expendable than Harmon was in what makes this show great.
Chase had nothing to do with Harmon’s firing . Harmon was a creative GENIUS for the show , but he was a horrible show runner on the business side of the show . Constantly over budget , didn’t get along with execs . You can search the many articles on the matter all over the net . If Community was pulling Modern Family #’s Harmon would still be running the show and have more money to do it with . But the shows ratings are horrible and will most likely fall another 15-20% next season due to its new Friday time slot . Sony just wanted to make these additional episodes cheap and on budget to get to what ever syndication #’s they feel they need .
Over budget because he did amazing stuff! He paid for the entire stop-motion episode from his pocket, same for other artistic elements.
I went several times to Harmontown and I can tell how much Community is his show.
Paying for it is the mark of a desperate show runner. Harmon couldn’t be creative under a budget. That’s the main reason he got fired. he put in all that extra work and money because he was in over his head, and couldn’t deliver, it’s that simple. He still got paid for his incompetence. Relax, and go watch a Dr. Who until you stop crying.
From all accounts Harmon was not “constantly over budget” (and when he did go over, he paid for it himself, like Alessandro said).
I can’t believe they don’t realize people will be booing and complaining during the Harmonless panel.
Those people are, putting it frankly, ungrateful morons then, since it’s probably just as much down to that talented cast as Harmon that the show’s been as successful as it has.
Yup — about the only reason I’m sticking around for the first episode next season is the talented cast, who deserve at least some success out of this whole debacle, not necessarily out of gratitude for the studio and network (A) ordering up a truncated season, and then (B) summarily toasting the creator/showrunner without even the courage to tell him over a phone call (much less to his actual face).
Right now, they’re the only thing making me come back for the fall, at the moment.
I expected them be called traitors here, for not standing up for Harmon.
Stand up for Harmon and…what, lose their jobs? Piss off fans who haven’t given up on the show?
Amen. They have contracts. They can’t do anything. They all love Dan and are NOT happy with his firing. So don’t go saying that they don’t care because they “didn’t stand up for him.” You actually have no idea.
This is my Favorite comedy…why would i stop watching after 3 seasons…i will certainly give the new writers a chance.
While there are new writers, most of the old ones are staying on. Its the show runners that are new.
This is coming from a huge fan of the show. I think the show will be a shell of it’s former self without Dan at the helm, but calling the cast “Traitors”? You are kidding, right?
They are all under contract. Fighting to get out of said contract or talking ill of the network would have potentially derailed their careers, regardless of how they felt about the situation. If you wanted to hire an employee and they walked off their last job and talked shit about their boss…
There is just one thing I despise about the show: Chevy Chase. He is useless. Totally not needed. Too bad he is back.
Donald Glover’s still on tour and Ken Jeong is locked in a dolls house.
Same writers, different show-runners.
Trouble is, those same new showrunners are also now the new head writers for the series, and can overrule/rewrite anything the returning staff-writers come up with.
They have final say-so over everything that gets made now, notwithstanding the likely-increased hands-on oversight that’s probably going to come from NBC and Sony after this point.
There’s no way in hell they’re bringing this show back without some potential retooling, which is the main reason why Harmon had to go — he would’ve choked Greenblatt to death, rather than submit to what they probably have in mind for his creation.
Yvette Nicole Brown is awesome. Glad to hear she is coming back!
Not for nothing, but as much as Harmon getting fired sucked ass, I’m really getting sick of everyone acting like he was the Second Coming of the Messiah who could do no wrong and who was the only good thing about “Community”.
Yes, a lot of the show’s uniqueness and creativity can be traced back to him. Yes, his firing is a loss for the show that will be difficult to overcome. Yes, for good or bad the show will probably not be the same without him.
But he didn’t do it entirely by himself. In all the wringing of hands and wailing and gnashing of teeth, people seem to be forgetting that he also had a talented cast, crew, directors, writing staff etc working with him as well to help visualize and create his ideas. The show didn’t spring fully formed from his beard, and it’s getting a bit irritating to watch everyone act as if he did.
I mean, for heaven’s sake, we haven’t even seen Harmonless “Community” yet. At least wait for the train to actually wreck before we bemoan the train wreck.
Im just glad the show is coming back. Period.
Ill wait to pass judgement on the Harmonless episodes until I actually see them. No matter what, it will be ten times better than the Carellless Office.
this is interesting because i do remember a few of the writers mentioning something along the lines of they don’t want something like “saved by the bell” where everyone stays in school forever. they were very aware that in a community college environment, people are always coming and going. my guess is that because the ratings aren’t doing well, nbc thought it would be a bad idea to get rid of any of the original cast members and without harmon, i don’t know if the writers and producers were willing to risk their jobs to disagree.
I luv the show with chase and ill still give it a chance without Harmon, but im concern it might lose fans when it goes to Friday nights.
I feel a bit sorry for the actors. Community is obviously a dead show walking at this point (13 episode order, Fridays or schedule spackle, Donovan/Goldman/Russos all having departed, Harmon fired, few writers remaining, lack of fanbase enthusiasm for post-Harmon Community) and they’re the public face of it all. Only a bit sorry, because they are well remunerated after-all.
I can see Community being hugely influential going forward, and the hugely talented creatives and cast going onto bigger things.
I can also envisage the show having a long shelf-life, which will reward Sony and NBC despite their destructive handling of the show.
The Question is will John Oliver be back!? He was a real treat.
Although I’ll miss Dan Harmon, we can’t judge it yet. These new show-runners may be really good. I’ll definitely be tuning in next season because even if the plot isn’t as good, the chemistry between the characters is still strong enough to keep me watching.
“Doesn’t not”? Seriously?
I’ll definitely give it a chance, but I’m nervous about a Harmon-free Greendale.
Two questions:
– Is Richard Erdman (Leonard) going to be back?
– If so, are they ever going to give him more than the usual one line every two weeks?
Of course, what they really ought to do is give Old Cornelius the boot and hand his regular slot to Erdman.
“You think about that now …”
Yes the new show runners aren’t Dan Harmon, but you guys also don’t know anything about them so how can you judge them? The show will definitely be different but it might still be good. You guys honestly can’t judge until you’ve seen it. Then you can decide if you don’t like it.
Wow calm down. In life there are people who help start great things and get it going. Harmon is one of those people. Now hes free to help create another fantastic series. I myself will continue to watch the show because its fantastic. Hopefully we will see more creative episodes like paintball wars. And Abeds animated fantasies. Possibly the long awaited annie/bree hookup. Possibly with jeff in a (triad). The cast is amazing with the exception of Chase. I hope his character has some sort of personality switch that brings something to the table.
Anyways simply put…. show good + cast good + writers good = me happy
