Longtime Family Feud host Richard Dawson died Saturday of complications from esophageal cancer. Dawson, 79, died in Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles. His son Gary said on Facebook that Dawson “was surrounded by his family” when he died. Dawson, born in England and named Colin Lionel Emm, had a small role in The Dick Van Dyke Show but became famous in Hogan’s Heroes in which he played the pickpocketing POW Corporal Peter Newkirk. Dawson later was a regular on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and The New Dick Van Dyke Show. He also served as a panelist on the game show I’ve Got a Secret and subsequently on Match Game ’73 along with Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly. Dawson hit the game show jackpot when he became the host of Family Feud and gained a reputation for kissing the female guests “for luck and for love.” The network version aired from 1976 to 1985, and he won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1978 for best game show host. He returned to host the 1995 final season of the syndicated version. Dawson also played the host of a life-or-death game show in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film The Running Man. He married one of his Family Feud contestants, Gretchen Johnson, who competed on the show in 1981. Together they had a daughter named Shannon Nicole Dawson. Dawson also had two sons, Mark Dawson and Gary Dawson, from an earlier marriage to actress Diana Dors.

Dawson was an icon on two shows that’s rare I can only think of Ted Danson, Buddy Ebsen and Don Knotts accomplishng that. Why Jack Lord didn’t do anything aftre Hawaii Five – O.
I don’t want to distract from remembering Richard Dawson, who I enjoyed very much on TV, but your list is way too short. If Danson, Ebsen and Knotts fit your criteria for being an icon on two shows, then you should also consider Larry Hagman, Bea Arthur, Robert Young, Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Tony Danza, Courtney Cox, Raymond Burr, Edie Falco, Betty White, Bob Denver, Heather Locklear, James Garner, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Michael J. Fox, Danny De Vito, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Michael Landon, Jack Klugman, David Hasselhoff, Bob Newhart, Andy Griffith, Katey Sagal, Teri Hatcher, Bill Cosby, William Shatner, Lee Majors, Bryan Cranston, Alyson Hannigan, Neil Patrick Harris, Ed O’Neill, and Michael C. Hall.
Don’t forget Bob Saget. He was even an icon on two shows at the same time!
God rest ya Richard
“Killian! I’ll be back!”
“Only in a rerun.”
Looks like Betty White will be the last survivor of the core Match Game gang. He was such a pleasure to watch. Always funny and charming! RIP!
How about Marcia Wallace?
Or Fannie Flagg, for that matter.
RIP Richard. You will be missed.
R.I.P. Mr. Dawson. I will always remember the laughs you brought with Hogan’s Heroes and the fun you gave with Family Feud.
Dawson has left the building. R.I.P.
Loved him on that Mama’s Family episode.
Richard thanks for all the fun.
Richard gave good love, but I think Wilt the Stilt still holds the all-time record.
But seriously, he was great on Hogan’s Heroes and on the Feud. Nice to know that he will be reunited with Diana Dors in the hereafter.
I believe Dawson also inspired the kissing game show host brilliantly played by John Astin in European Vacation. Who wants to be pigs?
He was truly the greatest game show host of all time. A master of the genre, he brought class, style, humor, and most of all, humanity. Richard Dawson is truly a television legend in every sense of the word.
He helped put match game on the map and now Gene and Richard can have a blast along with Brett and Charles. loved that Mama’s Family episode with him doing the Feud.
And the survey said…. rest in peace Richard.
He made his mark for sure; terrific on “Hogan’s Heroes” too … great show. An inspiration … long live the Dawe!
Someone should watch all the Match Games and see how many times Dawson was picked for the final round answer and how many times he matched. In my own memory, it was like he had ESP and matched the most. He will be missed.
“Survey says!” R.I.P. Mr. Dawson.
Richard Dawson — he made getting sick and staying home from school in the 1970s worth having to get a shot.
On the “Super Match” bonus game on “Match Game”, contestants usually picked Richard Dawson for the “head to head match” because 99% of the time, he would write the same answer the contestant would come up with.
If it weren’t for Richard Dawson, “Family Feud” might never have become the long-running smash it became.
FYI: I believe Richard Dawson came back to “Feud” after his successor, Ray Combs, committed suicide.
I believe he returned for one year in 1995, to fill in for Ray Combs while he was recovering from a serious car accident. His wife then left him and he killed himself. Thats how I remember it, but I could be wrong. Anyway, Richard Dawson was an amazing talent, and he will be sadly missed.
I feel so sorry about that!
RIP, Richard! Your true kindness and ALWAYS funny personality are the things I will always remember! Thanks for making game shows fun! Never heard anybody say a bad word about you! God’s Blessings to you and your family…
i love u
