EXCLUSIVE: You know that the gazillion-selling steamy novel trilogy Fifty Shades Of Grey has reached outlandish proportions when The New York Post devotes today’s front cover to the idea that women are stocking up on ropes to be used for bondage purposes. All of this has apparently been spurred on by the kinky relationship between the couple in the book trilogy. Things are heating up on the movie front as well for Universal Pictures, which won a seven-figure auction to turn the three books into movies. I’ve heard rumors about the possibility of Angelilna Jolie having a conversation or two about directing it. This has been buzzing around for a couple of weeks. The studio says that no discussions have been had, but they note that if she was interested, that the studio would be also. They loved her directorial debut, In The Land Of Blood And Honey. As for Jolie, I’m told she’s completely focused on her next film, Maleficent, at Disney and isn’t entertaining other offers at this moment.

Things should begin taking shape on Fifty Shades Of Grey shortly. Author E.L. James and her agent, Valerie Hoskins, will be coming in from the UK to Hollywood shortly. They will then set a producer first, followed by setting a writer and filmmaker.

I have read the books in their original form. While not particularly impressed with them, I do understand intent and scope of what the writer was trying to convey about the key players. The innocence and loss thereof, should be handled by a more seasoned director and not someone of Ms. Jolie’s less than admirable persona.
Ms jolie is far too old to interpret such a character!
WTF?! Jolie is 36, how on God’s green earth would she be to ‘old’ to interpret (I guess this is your way saying ‘direct,’) this schlock, even IF she wanted to – and I would bet the house, car, and farm that she does NOT. You make no sense, you dumb cow. Go back to worshipping at the altar of that fug truly OLD cow, from that stupid shitt-com, Anuston.
What a ludicrous comment! Angelina Jolie is a seasoned actor and knows her way around a set (in front of or behind the camera). Especially one filled with the dynamics of sexy characters. She is co-habtating with Brad Pitt for God’s sake! Now I’ll admit some of the writing in these books is crappy but one thing’s for sure its entertaining in every category. I’m sure the right team of producers, screenwriters, actors and the director will make it right for the big screen. If you haven’t considered this then you sound far too young to be reading this blog. And if 36 is old then I should pick out my pine box right now. Good grief!
What does her age have to do with directing this film? Exactly how old is old?
angilina would be fantastic as mrs. Robinson
two words… Adrian Lyne
Excellent suggestion. Director of Indecent Proposal
Isn’t he attached (or rumored to be attached) to Back Roads? I thought the film just got financing last month.
Cliche. Didn’t he direct 9 1/2 weeks? Moreover he is so obvious and formulaic lacking artistry and style.
Mira Nair comes to mind, but this story probably isn’t her style.
I really hope this is just a rumor because Angelina is far too good to direct this sappy crap. Directing a compelling heartfelt story about the Bosnian war to…this?
This is a story that needs to be “toned down” just to get an R rating.
Hollywood wants to be the porn industry?
Wait, they already are.
It’s fantastic that studio would even consider a new director like AJ Don’ t think she would interested though
Good call. Adrian Lyne should do it. I bet Universal would rather hire McG.
Great. This is getting bigger and bigger. I feel like this is going to be even bigger than Twilight. It will never end…
i agree i cant wait to see the film i think robert patterison kristen stewart should play ana christian
i agree i think robert pattersion kristen stewart should play ana christian i cannot wait
I think Joe Mangariello from Tue Blood should play Christian and I agree it should be Kristen Stewart should play Ana
I could never see her doing these sex scenes. She is so one dimensional.
You cannot have anyone from twilight in this.NEVER
Seriously!!!!
Please NO…no one from Twilight!
I would be very happy with Jolie. I think she can merge the scandalous, lost of innocence and retrospect that the project will require to be a great film.
I like the books in a thematic-sense quite a lot, the loss of innocence of Ana along with her sexual coming of age and Christian’s learning to trust were powerful story arcs that really helped the less-than polished story overcome it’s shortcomings…
I would think in this case a strong writer-director would be a far better option than AJ. Someone would really need to be a strong storyteller to help better develop this project…
A mediocre actress and a mediocre book…..a perfect match.
Why would anyone care for your opinion when you don’t even spend the time to read the post before commenting? Angelina Jolie is rumored as possibly directing. She’s certainly talented, but I don’t think she’d be interested in this kind of material.
She is a mediocre actress. At least a decent screenwriter and director could salvage the book. The sex scenes weren’t mediocre though;) lol!
I hope she doesn’t jump on board. But it might be interesting if she does…
I personally thought the books were horribly written and I’m just gobsmacked over the frenzy surrounding them. Several people I know only got interested in them once there was all the “buzz” – they didn’t even know what they were about.
I do hope the films do well because we all want to see movies getting made and doing big box office.
Mark. Romanek. Give this guy a guaranteed hit so he can gain some clout and make amazing movies for the rest of his life.
ADRIAN LYNE or STEVE MCQUEEN!!!!!!!! With the edge to Lyne who obviously was MADE to direct this movie…DUH!
What about Lee Daniels.
I hope it’s just one movie, because the erotic aspects–while vital to the characters in all three books–will just fall flat onscreen. The journey of Christian and Ana sans sex scenes have plenty of meat to them, and a really great director and writer will be able to tease this out, instead of relying on the explicitness.
How anyone can read this Twilight fan fiction is beyond me.
worst book ever. doesnt mean the movie cant be good.
Honestly, I don’t think people realize that this really was Twilight fan fiction that was changed to make it more mass market friendly. It is horribly written and just plain dull. It’s target audience wants to see Edward and Bella as Christian and Ana. The whole thing is just all kinds of wrong.
Alexander Payne.
Mass-induced silliness. Flush it.
Watch this fester in development hell and then get picked up and made for cheap by Millenium starring Gerard Butler and 50 Cent.
*shudder*
To all suggesting Adrian Lyne, congrats for your colossally “inside the box” thinking. As for this book series, kicks just keep getting harder to find. I keep thinking of kids, seeing their parents casually sharing with Dr. Oz (devoted an episode) or their local hardware store clerk how groovy-o this S&M book is. Yeah, call me prudish.
I say Ang Lee to direct see Lust, caution.
Jesus, I don’t understand the big deal about this book. Anne Rice did this perfectly years ago with her ‘Sleeping Beauty’ series, and we didn’t have to endure “fisting.”
Looks like you didn’t read the book because there was no fisting going on. Yes they discussed it but decided that was not for them. Nice to know these comments are credible
Yes, I agree. This is just “Exit to Eden” for post-teens.
colin farrell as christian!!!!!
Please get Alexander Skarsgard on board as Christian and forgive me i don’t know her name, but the girl who plays Marny on HBO’s Girls…or Natalie Dormer
You need two characters playing Christian n Ana to make it more real , not well known actors, these books are a fantastic read can’t wait till the film release
Angelina would make a good Elena (Mrs. Robinson).
