Disney has started production on Maleficent, a revisionist take on the villainness from the 1958 animated film Sleeping Beauty. Robert Stromberg is directing.. Here’s a look at Angelina Jolie in the title role:
Burbank, CA (June 19, 2012) – The Walt Disney Studios announced today that production began Wednesday, June 13th, on “Maleficent,” starring Academy Award®–winning actress Angelina Jolie.
Directed by two-time Oscar®-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (“Avatar,” “Alice in Wonderland”), in his directorial debut, and produced by Joe Roth, “Maleficent” is written by Linda Woolverton (“The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and executive produced by Angelina Jolie, Don Hahn, Matt Smith and Palak Patel.
Co-starring in the film are Sharlto Copley (“District 9”), Elle Fanning (“Super 8”), Sam Riley (“On the Road”), Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), Miranda Richardson (“The Hours”), Juno Temple (“Atonement”) and Lesley Manville (“Secrets & Lies”).
This is the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain, Maleficent, from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.
Behind-the-scenes talent includes Academy Award®–winning cinematographer Dean Semler (“Dances with Wolves,” “In the Land of Blood and Honey”), production designer Gary Freeman (“Saving Private Ryan,” “The Bourne Supremacy”), two-time Oscar® nominated costume designer Anna B. Sheppard (“Schindler’s List,” “The Pianist”) and seven-time Academy Award–winning makeup artist Rick Baker (“Planet of the Apes,” “Men in Black”).
“Maleficent” is scheduled for a March 14, 2014 release in 3D.

love her cheeks
This looks great and is a great new orginal take on the Sleeping Beauty tale. Its a bit like “Wicked” conceptually, but it hasn’t been done with this story before. Perfect casting for Jolie.
I saw Snow White and the Huntsman last week and enjoyed that more than I hoped. I really wasn’t expecting too much to be honest. So I was pleasantly surprised – maybe this movie will be the same way. The first Pirates movie was like that too. Did anyone expect a movie based on a corny amusement ride to be as bood as it was?
Kinda H.R. Giger-esque.
I think that’s just the lighting in the shot. Otherwise the headpiece is taken directly from the cartoon.
Life imitates art, Art imitates life.
Flop movie
I will not see it
o look its mike, the same person that compared the box office returns of rock of ages to Moneyball and is obsessed with anything Brad and Angelina related on deadline, who cares if you wont see it, many will
I hope she looks sullen, somber and brooding throughout the whole film.
Fabulous! Perfect! Too bad about her no-support supporting cast though.
what the hell is wrong with you? no support? elle fanning? imelda staunton? Shartlo Copley? Miranda Richardson AND Juno temple? They all give Jolie a run for her money.
HAHAHAHAHA
Seeing that weak lineup printed out was eye-opening. Disney really just gave up on this movie. Inexplicable. Went all out in landing Jolie, and then just gave up. Maybe the change in regimes is trying to torpedo a project left over from the previous regime.
Right, because that’s what they need to do to make a profit off this film and meet projections. Torpedo it.
She looks totally awesome! Cannot wait to see the movie. Shame we need to wait for it till 2014.
Tom Sanders was the Production Designer of Saving Private Ryan, not Gary Freeman.
Far from a flop, this is a great script! Huge hit!!!
There should be no complaints that this film did not have sufficient time for post which should be almost 18 months after principal photography is completed.
And, as always, Angelina is drop dead stunning.
With the consistent track record of non-profitability in films for several years now; how much longer before the faucet of funds dries up as investors start getting smart and choose not to piss away $.
I love Angelina and I can’t to see Maleficent!
{what color/brand lipstick is she wearing?} yes, I wanna know!
Lipstick was made from Mountain Dew Code Red, crushed rasberries, olive oil, and battery acid. *Do not make at home*

I hope the script and story is as good as the costumes and casting. Jolie has the look and bearing to play Maleficant.
Wow I’m finally excited for an Angelina Jolie movie.
I love the supporting cast. It seems clear that this movie is going for quality performance (shocker) and not trying to get people in because they are ‘cool’ or ‘popular’.
This photo is shamelessly stealing from Wicked, though, but whatever.
She looks like my worst 8 year old nightmares
So excited..great people behind this. the script writing, makeup, set designer.. great cast..
Angie is an executive producer.. all good.
never understand why people that claim they won’t see it are posting negative comments. But I bet they all see it.
OH and she looks stunning.
“To captivate our varied and worldwide audience of all ages, the nature and treatment of the fairy tale, the legend, the myth have to be elementary, simple. Good and evil, the antagonists of all great drama in some guise, must be believably personalized. The moral ideals common to all humanity must be upheld. The victories must not be too easy. Strife to test valor is still and will always be the basic ingredient of the animated tale, as of all screen entertainments.” —Walt Disney
“The span of years has not much altered my fundamental views of mass amusement. Experience has merely perfected the style and method and the techniques of presentation. My entertainment credo has not changed a whit. Strong combat and soft satire are in our story cores. Virtue triumphs over wickedness in our fables. Tyrannical bullies are routed or conquered by our good little people, human or animal. Basic morality is always deeply implicit in our screen legends. But they are never sappy or namby-pamby. And they never prate or preach. All are pitched toward the happy and satisfactory ending. There is no cynicism in me and there is none allowed in our work.” —Walt Disney
great look. She’s perfect for the part. Something I want to see. But I think Collen Atwood or Michele Clapton from GOT would have been better in the costume area. They are better at fantasy. Anna B. Sheppard is better at period work
Exactly. This should have gone to Colleen. Assuming she was otherwise occupied.
I’m not sure how I feel about this image. Angelina looks the part (especially with those accentuated cheekbones), but I really need to see more of the costume before I judge – right now, her “horns” look like plushie dinosaur tails…
Because I like Jolie so I will suggest this. For this character, since it’s Disney and other fairy tales have come out with different stories recently…..
I think Jolie should incorporate the inner life of the character ” Medea ” from Shakespeare into this villain, to add more depth to her and a twist on the film / character….so it won’t be too shallow like a typical witch character who hate kids…..
Jolie should read Shakespeare ” Medea ” and understand her inner life and use that for this film and see what happens, but maybe not go as far as the play….this should help boost the film and give the audience good acting to watch in a Disney movie….try this and see what happens….
Also I think after this Jolie needs to do Lara Croft again and get back into some good drama and action movies…..she’s too beautiful to play and evil witch, but for fun for her kids, so do it once , but it’s enough…..
Jolie is the ONLY gorgeous actress right now in Hollywood who is interesting and can sell tickets. It’s sad that the entire industry only has one gorgeous movie star….Jolie should not let evil stop her from making more movies, she should continue to make lots and ignore all the jealousy towards her….confident women are never jealous because they’re secure within themselves….
I love Jolie, I think she is gorgeous, look the way a movie star is supposed to look and she’s a whole person on her own with or without a man, and that’s why she’s special…Brad Pitt is very lucky to have her….she’s a keeper. Go on and make more movies and look gorgeous and f-ck the jealous demons:) good luck with this film Jolie!
“Jolie is the ONLY gorgeous actress right now in Hollywood who is interesting and can sell tickets.”
Ummm.. Scarlett Johansson much?
You’ve got to be kidding. It made NO SENSE!!!
jolie looks great. please be better then snow white and the huntsman.
Dearest 777-
perhaps you raging crush on Angelina has you a bit confused. Medea was written by Euipides, a very old Greek. You can search the entire Works of Shakespeare and never find a work by that name. Of course, like all good writers Mr. Shakespeare did borrow liberally from Euripides, Sopholes and Aeschylus. Borrow from the best they did.
I’m not too thrilled about Angelina, and Disney’s track record is slightly uneven. I cannot speak a badword about the makeup. She is always lovely and Malificent was certainly that. Let’s hope they had enought money left tobuy a decent script.
