That Lionsgate blockbuster The Hunger Games came into this weekend with a domestic theatrical gross of $399.5M. Sometime today the bestselling book-turned-movie is crossing the $400M mark at the U.S. and Canadian box office. Adding The Avengers and assuming The Dark Knight Rises is a sure thing, this will be the first year where 3 movies end up with over $400 million in North American grosses. Its global cume is near $650M.

That’s indeed an impressive feat for “The Hunger Games”, unlike the “Harry Potter” & “Twilight” movies, this film showed tremendous legs. You’re right, i think with “TDKR” on the horrizon, it’s an almost sure thing that we will see 3 films top 400 million domestically this year. Along with “The Avengers” probally hitting between 620-630 million, i see “TDKR” hitting between 380-450 million.
Are you strictly talking about the domestic gross? Because while The Hunger Games did better domestically, Harry Potter grossed over $1.3 billion dollars worldwide and Twilight Breaking Dawn grossed over $700 million dollars global. In terms of global cum, the Hunger Games needs to do another $50 mil to catch up to Twilight and I don’t see that happening. There is also no way it will come anywhere close to Harry Potter.
But you are completely missing the point. The Hunger Games is not a fantasy driven, escapist film. There are no wizards or vampires or CGI or 3D. It’s rather a dystopian film driven primarily by story and character, much more like Gattaca than the standard YA fare. It’s really very different than HP, which was also a much bigger literary franchise. THe HGs is not generally going to do as well in foreign markets (with exceptions like the UK) because it’s not the type of film that typically does well in foreign markets, which are much friendly towards special effects and escapism. A good analogy is a film like Dark Knight, which was also more dialogue and character driven and which did better domestically than overseas. I’d say that for a $78 million dollar, nonescapist, non-CGI based film without overwhelming global literary reach (for example, the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo books were much bigger sellers), HGs did fantastically. Plus it will have a huge DVD release and the the next films in the franchsie will play to much broader audiences. By way of comparison, the first Twilight film had a total gross worldwide of less than $400 million. It was able to build an audience with subsequent films.
don’t forget ‘The Hobbit’ in December
A great accomplishment for a non 3-D movie. I don’t assume TDKR getting $400 mil is a sure thing by any means. Batman Begins grossed $205 mil and while no one wants to admit it TDK’s box office gross was helped tremendously by Heath Ledger’s death. I think TDKR will earn between $300-$325 million.
TDKR is only going to make $300-325 million domestic? I wish there were some way I could make a bet with you over the internet right now. I’d love to take some of your money.
Remarkable.
Mediocre film. Passable acting. Thin plot. Uninspired (so much so the director opted not to return and who can blame him.)
And the marketing men worked their magic. The lemmings showed up in droves. Who needs filmmakers?
Haters gonna hate. Your greenness is showing, too, as in envy.
Hate? Come now. Thought it was mediocre. That’s all.
Green? I’d love to retire off such drivel. Perhaps I will one day.
That’s all, Paul H.
Far be it from anyone to disagree with an anonymous internet “expert”. To each his own.
Why in the world would you report that 3 movies passed $400 million domestic when The Dark Knight Rises hasn’t even come out yet?
Such a bizarre leap to make.
As they stated, they were merely making the assumption that it would pass the $400m mark.
This is great for Hollywood and bad for movie goers. Hunger Games was a paint by numbers adaptation with very little passion from director Gary Ross. How sad that a once original voice is making hack job motion pictures.
Expect more Twilight-esque teen novels turned into movies over the next couple of years. Blah!
So you didn’t actually see the movie? And talk about paint by numbers. Your comment fits the bill.
And yet, the box office is still in a slump. Go figure.
So glad an action heroine crossed the 400 million mark
What Pion said. And it didn’t have a lot of CGI and explosions.
While ‘The Hunger Games’ is another one of those ‘teen novel’ based movies, I find the concept rather intriguing, and for what I saw, it wasn’t half bad. I like how this film satirized reality television, and shows how dangerous overreaching liberal government control can be. More importantly, this film offers A more substantial female protagonist than Bella Swan.
The government int he movie wasnt liberal. it was right wing fascism. It’s what the world would look like if republicans like you got thier way.
A box of noodles is a more substantial female protagonist than Bella Swan.
First of all, STOP comparing this to Twilight. Only ignorant people will do so. These books actually have substance, something you would know if you actually took the time to read instead of making comments on something you know nothing about. I hate when people are stupid, and by the way, I’m far from a teen.
well deserved.
