IATSE Local 80 has filed grievances against ABC Studios for the recent firing of several crew members on Grey’s Anatomy. The Local’s business manager Tom Davis filed the papers for the union. (UPDATE: Because of the nature of the complaints, Grey’s creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland production company were not filed against.) The long-term crew members were allegedly fired after speaking with Disney Human Resources about the “hostile work environment” they felt was created last season by director of photography Herbert Davis. A source tells Deadline that the grip crew, gaffer and both the A-camera and B-camera assistant cameramen were replaced. The parties are expected to meet on the matter sometime in the near future as a first step in the process. Charges of wrongful dismissal and firing in retaliation for a protected activity are being filed with both California and Federal labor departments against ABC Studios.

IATSE crew members accused of creating a “hostile working environment”? Shocker.
it only takes about 15 seconds to actually read the article numnutz
No, created by DP Herbert Davis. I know you just wanted to have a jab at IATSE and thought this was a good opportunity. Next time maybe.
I guess the director told them to actually “WORK”…this caused a “Hostil Work Enviroment”. LMAO!
Unions cause soo many problems…
Sorry…”Hostile”
Back space gets stuck..
Yeah those damn Unions. Getting people healthcare, livable hours and paychecks, and pensions…
If only we could go back to the days when the Studios controlled everything, and the average worker was powerless. Those days were awesome.
Romney for Prez!
Unions only cause problems when rules are violated. If you’ve ever worked a non-union show you’d know.
Get an education before you open your mouth.
Are you a union member in the I.A.? If not, you don’t know what you are talking about. You sound like the typical union brasher without knowin s–t about unions. The one thing you should know, is that unions have made it easier for ALL workers.
I.A. Member, your statement is correct… It’s just about 40 years past it’s expiration date.
Unions played a pivotal role in workers rights in the early & mid 1900′s. But this is 2012, buddy. We live in California and I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but we’re in a massive financial crisis. Where does this crisis stem from? Union Benefits & Pensions, that’s where. Easier on all workers? What about non-union taxpayers? We’re paying for your retirement; how has that made it easier on me & my family?
Am I anti union? Not at all. I appreciate those who join them. But as a guy who works both Union & Non-Union show there is one difference that cannot be ignored: on union shows the arrogance of producers & crew members is disgusting. Everybody, top to bottom, gets too big for their britches.
Just because you’re in the union and have an inflated sense of self-worth, does not necessarily make you any better at your job than those who aren’t union. You merely fell into a fortunate position because of time/place or you knew somebody.
Are you really that clueless? The crisis is not because of unions but because of the idiot legislators who fund the pensions along with the morons George W. Bush and Bill Clinton who oversaw the destruction of the U.S. economy.
That said, you don’t know squat about how Hollywood works. Most people are independent contractors. That means that their employers don’t provide health care or retirement. The unions do so.
Wow Bob, you’re a regular comedian aren’t you? Trying knowing the situation before you open your ignorant mouth next time.
without the Union many of us would have died from unsafe working conditions. Unions exist for a reason. Do you actually work in this business, Bob?
Wow, bob, aren’t you an ignorant moron. And ibviously not in a union –after all, what union would have you? You display absolutely zero understanding of the world, and neither does the first commenter, seeing as how the grievance was filed on behalf of some IA members against another IA member, the DP.
Most scabs dislike unions.
I spent the first 8 years of my career working non union. In those 8 years I was always broke and in need of a dentist/doctor. My life now is much more like a normal persons. Iatse is like a security fence that protects you from the monsters. In this case, the monster is local 600. For the life of me I cant figure out why all of you movie fans hate all of the employees that make the products you love.
It’s not so funny, when you consider the number of good, union jobs that are being lost anyway.
Director’s of photography in TV production, seem to be doing way too much for the same money. On most sets now, the DP is setting up the shots, placing the vehicles, the extras… meantime the directors are just schmoozing with the first team.
A good DP used to be appreciated for being just that. But now its all multi-tasking, and no matter how many Emmy’s or Oscar’s uyou have, producers think all they need is anyone to get it in focus, and they’re take care of it in post.
And to think, that Oscar winning DP’s like Winton Hoch ASC, looked to TV as semi-retirement, once upon a time!
Nothing worse than a hack DP who thinks he’s running the show…
I LOVE Grey’s Anatomy! Best show on television! That finale with the plane crash was AMAZING!! Can’t wait for Season 9!!
How grand of you to insinuate that union members don’t like to work… Really… 12 hours as a normal work day. 16-18 hours as ‘a little overtime’. Spending those long hours in a hostile environment created by the DP or Producer or Star is misery on wheels. Stop any crew member and he/she will share with you their horror stories. I’m glad someone finally called it. (Don’t know the details). Too many crew members end up with breakdowns because of some a-hole who’s unhappy with his life and takes it out on them.
It’s true that Unions have done many things for the working man. Not this Union. Not IATSE. They have reaped the benefits of years of hard negotiations and bloodshed by legitimately trod upon laborers. Their usefulness has outgrown the modern work environment. We all reap the benefits of the hard work done by early labor organizations wins against Corporate greed. We don’t need a Union for that any longer. IATSE is no more than organized crime, blackmailing individuals into the union and once there, keeping them in the union. They use the ill gotten gains to sink their hands into the pockets of anyone, member to studio boss to distributor to viewer in order to line their own. They don’t make your shows any better, in fact, they are responsible for making them much worse. We have them to thank for Reality Television and now that they are going after that, we will have them to thank for what comes next. It won’t be pretty.
I think your a bit over the top. still I encourage everybody to vote NO on the latest contract negotiation . We can get a better deal. These guys are extremely lazy and always cave in one way or another.
I think the word is “you’re”, but keep thinking anyway.
Darn those unions for preventing labor from being exploited.
The guy behind the guy should separate his speculative opinions from fact. Yes I am a card member of IATSE Local 720 and no one forced me to join. I couldn’t wait to join.
I worked for Herb Davis on GA, great guy….the whole show was a hostile environment, not Herb. F em all!
Hey jackjaw, I’m on the crew! And we bust our asses 15 hours a day! And that’s usually because most of the directors don’t know wtf they are doing! So sit down and shut your trap!
Hey Brandon Blue
I’m closer to this situation than anyone here except for Keith (howya doing, bro). You don’t know what you’re talking about…I was there every day. When were you there..dayplaying once every six months? Davis needs a good bitch-slapping
The DP isn’t the problem on Grey’s. Problem is that they got rid of my character. Please bring me back, Shonda. I’ll be good, I promise. My film career is in the toilet. I swear, if I have to make one more movie with Ashton Kutcher . . .
Union pensions and benefits (in the case of film and tv production) are paid directly by the studios and shows that hire union employees. Not a single cent comes from the taxpayer’s pocket. If you think the Unions are useless, try working 24 hours straight for the same wage as a normal 10 hour day (like I have in the past on non union shows) and then tell me the unions are worthless.
Herb is not a hack d.p.. He is very good at what he does. When he leaves set, everything is put on hold because the directors don’t know what to do without him. Fortunately, he is always there.
