EXCLUSIVE: Jason Katims, the Emmy-winning writer-executive producer behind Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, has extended his relationship with the studio behind both series, Universal Television, in a new overall deal. Under the two-year pact, Katims will continue as executive producer on NBC’s Parenthood, in addition to developing new projects through his banner which he plans to build up into a full-fledged production company. As a key initial step, Katims has hired his first executive. Michelle Lee, VP at Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci K/O Paper Products, will join Katims’ company as head of development. “Jason Katims’ gift of writing deep, rich, complicated characters and relationships is a rare quality,” Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria said. “We are excited to develop new shows with him this year and to continue to go on a journey with his characters on the new season of Parenthood.”
Katims said his great experience collaborating with other writers over the years, most recently with FNL‘s David Hudgins this past season, was key in his decision to take the next step and launch a production company. In the company’s first cycle, Katims plans to develop something for himself to write as well as supervise a couple of projects from other writers. “Michelle and will focus on quality as opposed to quantity and will start with a small slate of projects that we are passionate about, and hopefully we will expand from there,” Katims said, noting that by the time he finished his first meeting with Lee he knew she was the person for the job. “She has a great handle of the kind of shows that I would get excited about doing, and she has great relationships.” In building his production company, Katims wants to apply the model he’s used on FNL and Parenthood. “I’m very proud of these shows, and not only am I am proud of them creatively but of the environment we’ve set up as a place where people love to come to work, and that’s the type of creative atmosphere I’d like to try to create at the company.”
CAA-repped Katims, who won an Emmy for writing the series finale of FNL, most recently created and executive produced NBC’s one-hour medical drama pilot County. His other credits include The Vow, Boston Public, and Roswell. Before her stint at K/O, Lee worked in television development at The Mark Gordon Co.

Great for Michelle! She’s fantastic.
Awesome hire. A great writer teamed up with a superb exec.
Inspired work to come.
Michelle is a really smart exec with incredible taste… Great hire!
Can’t wait to see what’s next from Katims. I did a project with Michelle back at Mark Gordon and she had fantastic notes and was a pleasure to deal with. She’s a great find by Katims.
Phil Iscove is going crazy right now. Congrats, Phil.
Congrats Michelle! Well deserved!
Michelle is a true find. Great pairing for her and Katims.
Bravo Michelle !!!
Congrats Michelle. Great to see true talent get recognized!
Katims is the man. Supremely talented and a nice guy to boot. About time he got his own company. Can’t wait to see what they come up with.
Rockstar! Go, Michelle.
Honestly, who cares about this non announcement? Working on TV shows based on old movies. So inspiring! So talented is he. So his awesome exec can spend her time going through the Uni library! Yay! Way to exercise that creative muscle. People like Chris Nolan better watch their back. Here comes Katims!
Wow. If that’s your feeling about Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, you clearly haven’t seen either show. Both shows are at the pinnacle of what TV can do in connecting to its audience on an emotional level.
There are two types of people in the world: those who have seen Friday Night Lights and love it, and those that haven’t seen it. FNL is arguably the defining network drama of the last 10 years.
Chris Nolan is visionary, but cannot yet write women.
Love when good things happen to good people! This is a team to root for.
Boy, they sound soooooo nice! That means they have no shot of getting anything done other than working for other people who are so creatively bold by turning old movies into TV shows. Great work guys!
Hey Joe R. Am sure Michelle was so fantastic that it got your project made. Sure. Could there be any more lameass kissing going on here. Please.
You’re right, my show didn’t get made. But I’ve had several shows not get made. Many of which were nightmare situations with high strung executives and people giving notes just so that they could look like they participated. Life’s too short. I’d rather develop with supportive people who work hard to make the project better. But if you think Michelle hasn’t been involved in getting projects made you clearly haven’t even read this article. And Katims has had shows on the air now for… I don’t know how long. So I’m not entirely sure what you’re talking about.
For the heck of it, after reading your comment, I re-read the article to see what projects Michelle has gotten going since I didn’t recall any, and the article doesn’t mention any. It just says she worked at a couple of companies that are in the TV biz. Did Kurtzman-Orci even have a pilot shot this past season?
you’re slamming k/o? 2 seasons ago: Exit Strategy. Lock & Key. both had people wondering why fox didn’t pick them up. enough that Lock & Key screened at comic con to a packed house and nearly every cable network circled it. and a “couple of companies” ??? seriously? You don’t know who Mark Gordon Company is? What r u doing on here?
Michelle is one in a million. Great choice!
Joe R., your show didn’t get made because more than likely you’re nothing more than mediocrity. How many shows have you created that have aired? Zero? And if you’re naive enough to think that every show isn’t a nightmare situation in some way, shape or form (produced or not), keep enjoy making a living on b.s. development deals that are a dime a dozen. Don’t mean to be harsh, but it’s true pally.
Dodger: I’m not sure how my career is really relevant, but I’ve worked on plenty of shows over a 25 year career. Some were nightmares and some weren’t. It’s sad to hear that your experiences thus far have been so bad that you think every show has to be. You should consider altering your expectations into a more positive light. Perhaps it will result in finding yourself in better work environments.
Mark M. Yeah, you’re right. Those shows are “the pinnacle”, the absolute cream of the crop. They’re definitely flagship/legacy shows. Entitled to your opinion, but I’m sure there are may 3 people outside of you, Katims and Michelle’s family and friends that agree.
Chacha: If you’re sure of that, I wouldn’t want you advising me on anything. It didn’t take much of an internet search to find Parenthood averages over 5 million viewers an episode. It’s going into its 4th year and has been called by virtually every publication to be among the best shows on tv. Friday Night LIghts won an Emmy, has been nominated for numerous and lasted 5 seasons and is often referred to by critics as one of the best shows of all time. Find me a studio and network that wouldn’t want that kind of fandom and praise. I don’t understand, are you a troll for Chris Nolan or something? If so, I should say I love him. I really do, but I don’t really see the connection between him and Katims since one does movies and one does mostly tv. But given that you want to compare, it’s somewhat hysterical that your criticism of Katims is that he created tv shows from the Uni library. That is pretty funny, given that Nolan is in fact most well known for rebooting Batman.
Wow. Gotta love the wrath of unemployed writers. You guys really need to get out more.
Come on Mark, you can do better than your last thread. Inception. Over $800m brother. And if you’re using Emmy’s as a gauge of true critical barometer then anyone who’s anyone in the business knows you’re an idiot. Emmy’s and every other award in today’s world are nothing more the industry sucking each other off to make them feel good about themselves because deep inside most of them know they are frauds.
So the true critical barometer is box office? I suppose that would work if both people being compared dealt in box office.
Wasn’t linking them stupid. You began with the Emmy thread. The Inception comment was to remind you that Nolan is not only about Batman. The sad thing is, truly is, that you have no real retort or defense. I know, really know when you look in the mirror you see a mediocre writer at best, who has been a journeyman on shows that no one will ever really care about, including you. But thank goodness for guys like Katims who will hire dudes like you, right? Let’s revisit in 2 years and see how many shows this company has on the air. Bet you wouldn’t be willing to put your money where your mouth is, but I most definitely would.
I haven’t even been a journeyman, Chacha. Everything I’ve said is a lie I’ve told from a ranch house in Kansas. I’m actually a dairy farmer. And you did link the two. Your original post was that Chris Nolan better watch his back.
Lots of love here for these peeps. Congrats. But this Michelle girl hasn’t accomplished anything other than what sounds like a typical D-girl working for establisehed producers. It’s a totally different world when you’re on your own. Good luck honey, you sure are going to need it. And everyone says you’re so nice. That’s great, but that and a bag of beans will get you nowhere.
Don’t know Michelle but know Katims and I think if someone as seasoned and on top of his game as he is sees something in her, then we all ought to shut the hell up. And hate to burst your bubble, but I’m pretty sure “being nice” only helped her as Katims is famously one of the nicest guys in Hollywood.
Scoring one of the most coveted jobs in town, especially as a young up and comer, is hardly nowhere, pal. Let people have a shot at making it before you tear ‘em down.
Katims is king. He should focus on writing his own stuff… I don’t wanna watch imitation.
Mark, come on, if you haven’t been a journeyman, what are you? what do you really consider yourself? Back it up. Credits? IMDB link? Show us the money! You’re whole “lie” thing came out of nowhere. No one said you were lying, just that you’re a journeyman and a writer who needs guys like Katims to exist for you to make a living, because if they didn’t exist you’d probably be teaching HS English or working at your local Gazette thinking you really made a difference in the world.
Now you’re demeaning people who teach high school english and report the news? I’m happy to link to my imdb profile. You go first. Or perhaps a link to your blog?
Bring back a movie on Roswell and how. They rebelled.
