She already has an Oscar, a Golden Globe a Grammy. Now Jennifer Hudson is going for an Emmy. The Dreamgirls co-star is set to appear in a multi-episode arc on NBC’s musical drama Smash next season, beginning with the second-season premiere. Hudson will play Veronica Moore, a Tony Award-winning Broadway star who impacts the lives of Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty). “This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson,” NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said. “Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.” The stint reunites Hudson with Smash executive producer Steven Spielberg whose company DreamWorks also produced Dreamgirls. “I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC,” he said. Smash will now feature two famous American Idol alumnas next season: McPhee, who was a finalist in Season 5, and Hudson, who was on the third season of the reality series.

New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

I hope that they can fix this show.
Well it’s a nice get for NBC and a casting coup for a show that wisely dumped some terrible characters.
I still find it quite interesting how people seem to rave over Hudson’s voice and yet her recording career success has never been found in terms of sales.
Whitney, Mariah, Christina, etc. She’s not destined to join their ranks.
I just hope they try to have her belt a song. That shrill sound to her voice isn’t pleasing.
Her Genre. Pure R’n'B doesn’t sale any more. She’s in the mold of Mary J Blige and people just dont buy pure R’n'B any more.
Also, I’m of the opinion that J-Hud has never been given material that matches the quality of her voice.
You both are correct. R&B is another genre that’s dying…. today it’s all about dance and electro dance. Her manager is very strategic. He’s got Jennifer selling clothing, endorsing WW, movies, TV and song. Today you have to be a multi-talented individual. No one (except Adele) can depend on records and touring for a living. I think JHud has had very good material and her two CD’s have reached #1 and #2, just not a lot of sales….but the same can be said about Usher.
“endorsing WW” like other D-listers
True… Also the reason Beyonce’s recent album didn’t do so hot? Besides the fact that most of the songs were just ugly…
GO SMASH GO – brilliant casting! And won’t miss that bunch who aren’t returning! Smash is GLEE for grownups!
This exemplifies the lack of quality minority roles in Apartheid Hollywood. JHud deserves her own series or movies, not play 3rd or 4th fiddle in this pointless dreck. She’s an Oscar winner, for Christ sake.
No insult intended, but she’s an Oscar winner in an ensemble piece.
The work she did was phenomenal but until she does more as a “stand alone” project, it’s not fair to claim she’s being held back.
Concentrate on the acting (and not the other things) and she might have a chance of getting more opportunities.
Keep in mind DREAM GIRLS was her first outing as an actress and she hasn’t had many “important” acting roles since.
She “deserves” her own show because she won an Oscar? Puh-leaze!
Tell that to Louise Fletcher, okay? Or maybe Cuba Gooding, Jr. What Ms. Hudson needs to do is actually admit that it was American Idol who put her on the map, show a little thankfulness and then maybe the throngs would warm up to her.
@Oscarwinner: she hasn’t received the opportunity for a “stand alone project”, that’s the point. How is she going to get “many important acting roles” if they’re not available or offered to her?
@savvydude:
Cuba Gooding had starring roles in features after his Oscar win (1 good, the rest mostly awful which substantiates my point to what’s being offered to actors of color) & has a series debuting in the fall. Louise Fletcher 40 years ago did as well. Your talent for false equivalency may make you popular @ parties, so why not leave that bullshit there.
But keep justifying the bigotry in the industry. It’s all you people seem to be good @.
Remember the olden days when an Oscar winner could count on a great starring role in a movie? How sad that a talent such as hers is relegated to role in soon-to-be failed 2nd season of lackluster soap opera.
I like Smash, I think she’ll be great, I’m looking forward to it.
For the love of… could we please focus on the show and don’t start stunt casting – that’s a death move and then for it to be Jennifer Hudson AGH!
She deserves better but its great casting.
EXCUSES! Two albums with flop sales. Hudson should be doing Carrie Underwood sales and arena tours by now.
She can’t do Carrie Underwood sales because she doesn’t have Underwood’s talent or looks
I’m excited to see whatever Jennifer Hudson does.
She was a cruise ship singer who overcame the odds to be a star in music, television and film. This was done as an overweight person.
After the tragedy of losing her family, she triumphed further by starting her own family and losing weight.
She represents everything that we should glorify as a woman, a Hollywood star and as a human being. She is one star who I am convinced will earn (and deserves) the coveted “EGOT” status.
After plucking that Emmy, she will only be a Tony away from being full EGOT.
What ever FOX has done NBC will try, FOX has “American Idol” NBC gives us “The Voice”, FOX has “Glee” NBC gives us “Smash”, FOX News has “The Five” MSNBC gives us “The Cycle”. What’s NBC going to give us next, an action-drama called “25″?
Is Smehsh still on?
She’s a movie star, this is bad advice…I never would have recommended her do this this lame show.
She’s not a movie star…she acts in movies. Big difference. If anyone thinks the Hudson’s Oscar win was based on talent and not the source material of Dreamgirls then you’re fooling yourself. Put Amber Riley in that role and you would’ve seen the same result. It put Jennifer Holiday on the map and won her a Tony so Hudson just walked a similar path (but not as good as Holiday).
The reason she’s doing this show is because her albums don’t sell, her singles don’t chart, she can’t sell a tour and she’s never gotten rave reviews or come close to Oscar buzz since Dreamgirls. She gives very wooden performances IMHO.
Why hasn’t Jen Hudson getting the Jennifer Aniston Katherine Heigl rom com roles?
