EXCLUSIVE: The Break-Up scribe Jeremy Garelick has come aboard New Line’s reboot of the Police Academy franchise that launched in the 1980s and spanned seven films through the mid-’90s. The comedy, once again produced by Paul Maslansky, picks up the tale of a group of bumbling police recruits. David Diamond and David Weissman wrote the most recent draft.
Garelick, who did extensive rewrites on The Hangover, is separately rewriting Sick Day for Universal and Imagine. He’s attached to direct that film. Police Academy will be directed by Scott Zabielski, who’s making his feature debut after helming TV episodes that include Tosh.O. Garelick’s repped by UTA and Principato-Young, while Zabielski is repped by UTA and Underground.

another unnecessary remake
not kidding, i can’t wait to see this movie, i really hope it gets made.
How much real value does the POLICE ACADEMY “brand” have? We’re not talking about GHOSTBUSTERS or the TERMINATOR franchise, we’re talking about POLICE ACADEMY. If most of the youngsters have barely heard of it and the oldsters resent you for digging up another childhood favorite, what is the upside of rebooting it?
Same was said about 21 Jump Street and look how that ended up. If they take a similar route and get the right names this can work… it’s all about the angle they take with the material.
After they gut the original story to make it a PG-13 acceptible script it will be a hollow version.
you guys are nuts. 21 Jump Street was supposed to be a shitty film cause of the same reasons and look how much money that made, and how funny that was. This is a top notch comedy writer, and a up and coming comedy director. Regular assholes becoming asshole cops is funny at a core level. Don’t be such haters. This could be awesome if they do it right!
Jeremey is the best comedy writer in town. I WILL see this film.
The more I hear about this, the more I think it might actually be good. I would see this movie.
Lovely…another remake of a failed franchise. When is Hollywood ever going to learn?!
Can Porky’s be far behind? Or did I miss that announcement already?
I remember when these came out. And now, thanks to cable, they are spawning a re-birth. This actually could be a good re-boot.
